My experience was probably a 4.5 but I rounded up as their overall score is too low. This is one of the better Thai resistant that I have tried in the triangle--period. At least in terms of flavor. I had seen this place before but with a 3.9 I was not that excited. I then heard from two very different people who said it was their favorite around here. I was stunned. So we have it a try. What a treat. We had the seafood pad thai (have never tried that!) and thought the flavor was wonderful. We also had the pad wan sen which was very solid. Both is us were two thumbs up. The price was about what you would expect--maybe a little on the high side for portion size. But welcome to shrinkflation. It was also seafood which is always a bit more it was fair. The food was prepared quickly and was hot on pickup. The parking lot is a little tight and it is easy to miss it if you don't look carefully but it was cute inside. We might have to eat there next time. Worth a trip if you live in the area for sure. It will likely be our new regular spot. read more

We are from NY, right above NYC. We ate at Thai 55 every year we come down for work. We are treated like family and the food is delicious! We ordered pad Thai, Masamen curry with duck--it was amazing. I ordered Thai iced tea and mango with sticky rice. The flavor, the spices used the service were beyond our expectations. Every time we come here we are reminded that there are kind, loving people all over the world and that food is love if you are open to receive it. Went here as a birthday dinner. The employees, Gail and Timmy, were fabulous. I had a duck dish, Charlie had crab fried rice, the birthday boy had Chicken KaCloud. (Or something). It was good, tasty, super fast, BUT this meal was $100 ( plus a $20 tip = $120). Besides three plates, we had two beers and a coke. The crab fried rice was supposed made with 'fresh crab' but that just can't be true. Even if, $25 for crab fried rice is nutso. I had the drunken noodles with pork. It was excellent and again mild spicy. Spicy enough for taste difference without overpowering the palate. My partner and I ordered carry-out from Thai 55, and we had a wonderful experience throughout. The online ordering forms, while lengthy, provide a ton of options for customization. The turn around on the food was quick too -- 20 minutes from ordering to pickup! When we arrived at Thai 55 to pick up our order, we were greeted by DJ, who I presume is the owner. He informed us that they were unfortunately out of the Thai BBQ Pork we had ordered (unsurprising, given that Thai BBQ Pork is delicious!), and asked us to pick out any other appetizer we wanted as a substitute. We picked the potstickers (to which DJ said, "I'll give you two!"), and he assured us that they'd be out quickly. We sat at the bar and waited, taking a moment to look over the cute and cozy interior -- definitely a nice spot for a date night or dinner with friends. Sure enough, the potstickers were ready in less than 5 minutes, and when giving us our order, DJ also gave us a bottle of white wine and two cold bottles of beer -- entirely unprompted! We were so touched and delighted by his kindness and generosity, and we found ourselves smiling about it the whole way home. As for the food -- hot dang. Pretty tasty stuff. We got the panang curry, potstickers, Thai dumplings, tom kha, and pad prik. It was all delicious, and the portions were generous. I cannot recommend this place enough. I don't even have pictures of our food because we devoured it!!! Our waiter was beyond kind and helpful, explaining all flavors of the dish to make sure we got it exactly how we liked it. We (and all guests also) got a complimentary salad and soup which was delicious, curry mushroom soup and a ginger dressing salad. I got the lunch crispy catfish with black pepper sauce and my husband got the ka prowd chicken and we both loved every bite. Highly recommend!!! And we will be back! read more

I do not have enough words on how incredible Thai 55 is! Recommended by an incredible friend, we came here together and you can tell how great the people are the moment you walked in. The absolute kindest and most intentional people work here, they really make the entire experience elevate to another level. HUGE shoutout to Tommy- he is so warm and welcoming, also very fun and funny! He greets everyone with a smile and warmth, truly incredible. The inside is also very cute, spacious, and very clean. The menu is filled with incredible dishes, I found it hard to narrow what I wanted down cause everything looks so good. I found myself thinking of wanting to come here every week so I could have a little bit of everything. I'm also a huge fan of eggplant, Tommy recommended I get the lunch special (which usually range between $10-$13 per plate, huge portions and comes with rice- incredible deal). Worry not about the spice levels- you can choose! You MUST get their Thai tea! I'm a fan of it coming in a mason jar with a handle, looks very pretty (aesthetic, you can mix the cream into the tea- sadly my photo is too blurry to do it Justice). Super delicious! For dessert- you have to get the mango sticky rice. A top tier dessert, not too sweet, tastes really creamy and refreshing. Always a beautiful balance of flavors. I don't know why it's only rated 3.9 stars....I had a 5 star experience tonight! My husband took me out there tonight for dinner around 8:30 and it was my first time there. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves minus the occassional takeout order. A warm, friendly man named TJ greeted us and sat us down. I also watched the way he greeted each customer who came in for takeout regardless of how they were dressed, etc...he treated them all like family. I had a Thai iced tea, and decided on 2 appetizers as dinner, crab angels (OMG AMAZING YOU HAVE TO TRY) and the basil wraps (also good). Hubby got the chicken pad Thai and it was one of the best pad Thai's of my life...and I have had so many!! TJ told us that the difference is that they make their own noodles fresh, daily. This is my favorite place to eat in Durham. My personal favorite item (so far) is the chicken noodle bowl. Great portions, if you leave hungry, it's your own fault. It's very clean. The owner is so friendly. They moved about a year ago which threw us off since their old sign is still up at the old location and we drove an hour and a half for lunch; luckily gps brought us to the new location. I tried this place for the first time and it didn't disappoint! The first thing that gave me a solid impression of them was that I called twice to try to place a takeout order and it went to voicemail both times, so I decided to try to place an online order. While I was placing an online order, they actually called me back? Have you ever had a restaurant call you back? The man on the phone was very personable. I got drunken noodles with tofu which is my go-to dish at Thai restaurants and priced comparably to other places at $17 including tax. When I came to pick up my order, I believe the same older gentleman who answered the phone rang me up (his name is BJ) and asked if I liked spicy and wanted extra spice. I thought it would be a little packet but he actually told me to wait so he can go get it and he put some of their spice powder/seasoning(?) in a little container for me which was so sweet of him! He also threw in a free Thai tea for no reason at all! The drunken noodles were delicious because the sauce was perfect for me, it was not too salty and not bland, which I have had before at some other places. I got my dish mild, and unlike so many other restaurants who interpret "mild" as "0 spice" which makes it confusing for anyone who wants a kick but not burn their mouth, this was ACTUALLY mild spice! You could tell there was very slight hint of a kick later on that is not really noticeable initially! The noodles, tofu, and veggies ratio was perfect. Thai tea is normally very sweet anywhere you go, and is normally too sweet for me, but this was a tolerable sweet level and I enjoyed it as well! I came here on a whim with my boyfriend and least to say we were surprised. The owner is so funny and attentive. It was quite busy with a couple of doordashers but he still managed to make us feel like we were taken care of. We got Pad Thai with chicken (spicy). It was phenomenal, honestly was the best pad Thai in my whole life. The flavors were very well balanced and the spice complemented the dish amazingly. I would recommend getting mild or medium if u cant handle spice well. Yellow curry is one of my favorites. I always have to order some curry when I get Thai food. Because of the pandemic, a lot of the smaller Thai restaurants close to me - are closed, so I was happy to give this place a try. I ordered the PAD THAI with SHRIMP - MEDIUM SPICY. The price was very reasonable ($9.95 + tax), the portion was huge (see photo) and the customer service was really good. However, it wasn't spicy at all and only cane with 4 shrimp. Like I said, this was my first time so I'm willing to give this place another try. I came here for dinner with a group of 7. We were seated immediately and the place had several customers, but was quiet overall. I ordered their green curry with tom yum soup. Their curry was really creamy and I was relieved to find that they had a lot more chicken than it appeared. As for their tom yum soup, it had a strong tomato taste. There was only one waiter but he was incredibly efficient. He manned the whole restaurant by himself and got our orders promptly. He also asked us in the beginning how we'd like to split the checks, which really saved the hassle of figuring out how much to pay per person after. Based on the reviews we realized the green curry is popular so we ordered that with shrimp Hot! We also got drunken noodles Hit and crab angels (similar to crab Rangoon's) Called the phone quick to answer and repeated the order back I noticed an error and they apologized and fixed. I was told 15 minutes. From reviews I saw you need to provide preferred heat level. When we arrived about 8 minutes later, I saw people park, go in, and come back with smiles. I went in place smelled clean, nobody was inside except one other person waiting for To Go. I was greeted immediately, then asked if the green curry was mine! I was rang up quickly and told by another woman waiting to try the Volcano next time. We got home everything was piping hot! The angels were crispy and flavorful. I felt a cold coming on so I ordered Tom Yum seafood soup and crispy squid through Uber eats. When it finally got to me I was highly disappointed. I didn't receive my crispy squid and they replaced it with a bottle of water. This was not told to the Uber eats driver. If it was I would have asked for something else. "Meh, I've experienced better," is basically my TLDR Ordered takeout dinner from here and it was not the best thai experience I have had. As a vegetarian there were not many options minus the staple pad thai which I did end up ordering and some fried tofu. My padthai came in Chinese to go vertical box, putting all the noodles at the bottom and sprinkled on top was tofu, beansprouts, and peanuts. Not exactly how you eat pad thai, so I obviously dumped it on my plate. To my dismay there were just way too many noodles and 0 vegetables on the plate minus the bean sprouts, not even a single piece. The noodles were on the dry side. The portion was really massive however, not really sure if thats a good or bad thing but just as an FYI. I won't comment much on the fried tofu I actually don't like the dish too much but ordered it because one of the only if not the only vegetarian app and I said might as well just try it and if I don't like then I'll toss it. So its not really their fault I didn't like it, I just don't like the dish (every restaurant is different so I gave it a small chance that maybe the dish was made in a different way or maybe had a really good dipping sauce or something that would swing me back). I'll be again traveling to Durham in the next year; I fully anticipate returning to Thai 55. Two nights ago I used Durham as a stopover between ATL & RIC. After checking into the motel, I went in search of food. From my last trip in early October, I recalled a Thai bistro on NC55. Got it! Very visible from the road; dedicated parking lot; well lit. I went in, grabbed a menu, and sat at the bar. I ordered: * Egg Rolls * Basil Fried Rice with Shrimp; hold the Shrimp Twenty minutes later I was on my way back to my motel. Ten minutes after that I was chowing down on the 3 small Egg Rolls. Very good. They were packaged with a cup of sweet dipping sauce. I would have preferred Fish Sauce, and will ask for that next time. On to the Basil Fried Rice. A little scant on the Basil, but still very good.
