First of all, they need a better name. Thai 55 makes them come across as forgettable. The staff and so friendly and accommodating. The food is excellent. I've had the vegetarian dishes. The green papaya salad is solid and came with sticky rice. The curries I've had there have been really good and filled with a good amount of veggies. To me a strong indicator of a legit Thai restaurant is one that serves fresh sticky rice, and not just for dessert with mango. Thai 55 passes that test. So if you find yourself at the dizzying nexus of HWY 55 and 54 and you don't know where to eat, slide in at Thai 55 and you won't regret it. read more

Came here for lunch today and was greeted by the owner BJ with a warm smile. I ordered the lunch special pad Thai with shrimp and chicken. To my surprise, I was also brought a tasty complimentary soup to get started. Not sure if it's name, but it tasted like a spicier version of Miso soup and was a nice compliment to the meal. The pad Thai was pretty good, and would definitely recommend it to Thai food lovers. SHELLFISH ALLERGY WARNING: Saturday night I went to Thai 55 with my family. I have a shellfish allergy and I informed my server of this. I ordered Tom Kha and Panang Curry. Needless to say, I had a violent allergic reaction (hives, vomiting, swollen face) etc. about 15 minutes after eating and throughout the night. I'm super bummed. Nothing I ordered had declared shellfish in the description. To be fair the waiter was the only one working and he was busy, but food allergies are serious and it is important to listen to your customer when they ask about such things. We're not doing it for attention. We're doing it because it has life and death potential, or at least a very bad evening being sick and itchy and swollen. read more

There is no bad dish here. Everything is so good and flavorful. It's great for a quick lunch. I would recommend parties of 4 or less. The place is small. If you can, try the coconut cake - it's addictive. My favorite is the boring sounding sweet and sour chicken but it's not your average dish. The catfish is amazing. read more

I had a hard time deciding between 4 and 5 stars, and ultimately decided on 4. I ordered the red curry from the Thai menu (they also have a sushi menu), and it was really good. Much better than all the other curries I've had in Durham. The kaffir lime and basil leaves were prominent, which gave it both an aromatic and taste kick. The food was also plated pretty well - the curry was literally on a plate, not in a bowl - the chicken and veggies were gathered in the middle, while the curry filled the rest of the plate. Actually, you could even say that it looked like a moat lol. But why 4 instead of 5? Okay, the first thing is the price. For a curry, it was expensive. I asked to add veggies to my chicken red curry, and it ended up costing me $18. That's so expensive for a bowl of curry! Second thing is that I was told the wrong price by the waiter. When I asked him afterwards why it was a higher price than what he'd quoted me for adding in veggies, he said that he "forgot". Okay, that's pretty bad - you can't just forget a price. I wondered whether to ask him to comp that since he quoted the wrong number, but since he was nice and friendly throughout our meal, I decided not to. Lastly, the curry came out lukewarm, and I had to ask for it to be heated. Overall, really good curry, but (especially given the price) not sure how frequently I'd come. read more

I had an 8 hour conference call today, and turned to door dash to hunt some delicious deliverable food to get me through the back half of the afternoon. Delicious is not what I received, but I did get overcharged, sent the incorrect order, and called stupid by whom I assume is the owner. I ordered pad Thai, which comes with shrimp, and added (upcharge) pork. I didn't substitute the shrimp for pork (no charge). I also paid (upcharge) for extra peanut sauce because normally that stuff is bomb. Well, I wouldn't know because it arrived dumped into the bottom of the plastic bag. Upon further examination I realized I didn't have any shrimp (and not much pork to bat) and I called the restaurant. The owner became very agitated, saying it was door dash' fault. I only wanted the shrimp and peanut sauce and all would be well. He said door dash messes up, it's not his fault. My reply was that ultimately he is the owner and if door dash wasn't doing him well, he shouldn't use their services and that it is his reputation. He then told me I was stupid, and I did let him know that I intended to leave a poor review. I spent $20 on lunch and received a huge mess, an incorrect order, pork so dry it was like leather, and zero concern or effort by the establishment to course correct. Shameful really. read more

So I have to preface this by saying I probably would be on the fence leaning toward 2 stars, but the waiter was so nice and working so hard! He was covering the entire restaurant and doing a good job all things considered. The food was fine, just really, really, bland. Between four meals and two appetizers, they ranged from disappointing to okay. The tempura wasn't cooked hot enough, so it was a bit squishy. The vegetables were undercooked, the chicken over cooked. I keep thinking it was because there was zero spice, but perhaps we should have asked for that. I'm used to getting to choose from a spicy scale, and maybe they just missed that part. And then again, maybe the kitchen was understaffed too. Either way, I'll still most likely try a different place instead of coming back. read more

During the Take Out only period with quarantine and all that, decided to get food from here on recommendation from good friends. Their only saving grace was using the right type of noodles for Drunken Noodles (this is why the 2 stars and not 1), rest everything was probably one of the worse experiences and Thai food I have had. The Panang curry was so sweet and creamy it should have just been called red colored coconut milk with sugar. They mixed up spice levels completely. Also they were terrible at customer service even during pick up. On top of all this the portions were half the size of some other Thai places in the area. Given their pricing I do not understand why their portions would be so small. Bottom line: Bad customer service, Bad taste, Bad portions - All in all a pretty bad Experience! I've passed this place hundreds of times, finally decided to try it. They have an online ordering option on their website that is really easy. I didn't even have to pull out my credit card and type it in. They let you pay at the restaurant. Just need to provide your phone number. When I went inside, it definitely looked like a nice place to have a meal. The decor was cute and cozy. From the outside, it looks like a hole in the wall. But the inside is more elegant and inviting. Walking in, you realize that you would actually like to have a meal there. But for now, they are doing take out only. I ordered Beef Pad See Ew and a Thai Tea. The Thai Tea was REALLY good. Perfect amount of creamy and sweet. The Pad See Ew had a good flavor, but it was very overcooked. Some of the noodles were hard and the beef was basically like jerky. However, the broccoli was perfectly steamed. So mixed results. I might consider trying them again, especially for the Thai tea. Clean, inviting, unpretentious atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable (and ready to eat) as you enter the establishment. To your right coming in, you see bar seating and tables throughout the balance of the restaurant. We were greeted immediately upon arrival and quickly shown to our table. There were several other patrons already dining ...occupying roughly 75% of total seating capacity. We all order wine and checked out the menu. While doing this, I ordered Thai Sausage for the group as an appetizer...which everyone enjoyed. Very nice sausage - spicy.... flavorful and it was served with romaine, scallions, cucumber and red onions. It also came with a sweet and spicy sauce. The Thai Sausage was a hit! For my main meal, I selected Roasted Duck with Red Curry.....I am glad I did. Fantastic meal. Nicely presented and generous portion. The duck was roasted and served boneless, so tender with a distinctly complex and full-bodied flavor. It was complimented by tomatoes, bell peppers, basil, pineapple and a red curry sauce. My companions' meals also looked very appealing and everyone seemed quite pleased with their sections - e.g., Thai BBQ Chicken with Shrimp Fried Rice and Spicy Seafood Soup with Squid, Shrimp, Mussels and Scallops. This guy, however, will again order the duck upon returning. Finally, in addition to great food, you also get fantastic service and a good value for your food dollar. I recommend Thai 55! read more

The rice had so much garlic it overpowered everything. The chicken was okay, but also had a heavy amount of garlic. The service was ok.

This is one of my favorite restaurants. They used to be about a half mile from me and have now moved a bit down the street. We were so sad when they were closed to move. The owner is so friendly, and the food is always delicious. A friend of mine who also loves Thai 55 lives in north Durham and she's always jealous when I tell her I'm going here for dinner. I'm a Chicagoan with family in the Triangle - everytime I'm in town, I get the red curry from Thai55. Usually, I start thinking about it when I book my flight, and start asking if we can place an order as soon as I land. We have only ever done takeout - the food is always ready quickly and is still hot when we get home. The red curry is my personal favorite and a bit sweeter, but the green is also a popular order. If I could order the recipe, I would. Portions are big enough for a good sized dinner and leftovers the next day - though, I'm pretty sure I could eat an unlimited amount if I let myself. Fresh and tasty Thai food! A consistent theme from all my visits so far. Here are some of my favorites that I have ordered: Pad Thai Shrimp, Green Curry, and Squid Salad. This place does fill up quickly for lunch so I usually head over early to beat the crowd. Thus far, I have only had positive experiences with their service; food comes out quickly and staff is friendly. The ambience is simple. It is very close to the gas station next door which adds to its casual feel. The lunch specials are a good deal with most being under $10. However, I have noticed that the dinner menu is much more expensive with special entrees ranging from $13.95-18.95. The lunch portion is smaller and I do not ever foresee needing a to-go box but I'm thinking the price increase for dinner means larger portions (maybe?). I probably won't have many opportunities to dine for dinner since it is not close to where I live but I will definitely continue to visit for lunch! read more

This place was surprisingly terrible. From the outside to the inside it looked promising. The food looked appetizing as well! I couldn't wait to dig in! The soup that came with meal (some sort of cream of coconut and mushroom concoction) was very good. The actual meal was huge letdown. I honestly don't believe the person in the back had ever cooked Thai food in their life! My base flavor in the rice as well as my husbands base flavor in the noodle was the same...some sort of tomato base...no veggies, no garlic, no zing...not a happy Thai camper right about now....if you know me you know Thai is my happy place...and I did NOT leave happy. Thai 55 offers a number of traditional dishes at reasonable prices. My wife and I have been there a handful of times and each time they have delivered excellent food in great portions at prices that undercut most local Thai locations. The owners and chef are always there to chat and provide input on the specials that rotate frequently. While it may not have the overly ornate or fancy interior, I prefer the food, service, and smiles here to many of the local establishments that appear to be mostly flash versus substance. It's also very nice that it is ~4 miles from my house and very easy to get in/out quickly or for take out as well. read more

I love love this place. Just came here earlier this week with and friend and I've gotten take out again this weekend. Can say both experiences have been stellar. Thai food seems to be a difficult area in the rdu area. But this really hits the spot! Nothing too much to say about the place as it reminds me of a typical Thai restaurant with booths and tables. Service was attentive. But the food. The food! I love the spice ratings and the spice seems pretty true unlike some places where you order a five in spice and it isn't even spicy. The green curry is definitely a favorite here. I got it with shrimp. There was an good amount of shrimp included and the curry was so silky and creamy with the bite of spice, it was heavenly. Paired with a bowl of rice, omg, amazing. I also always get drunken noodles too as a way to compare Thai restaurants and I have to say this place passes with flying colors. The flavor is really how it should taste and the spice level was on point. There was a good array of vegetables and the beef was tender. We both got some stalwart Thai dishes (Pad Thai and a curry) to try out how they did, and shared some appetizers. No complaints all around - flavors were spot on, protein and servings were very reasonable, and they were perfectly willing to swap out some noodles for rice, something some places have a lot of trouble with. Was looking forward to the food but it just didn't meet expectation. The food was not bad but I've definitely had more flavorful Thai food than at Thai 55. The pad thai was a little dry and the chicken was just too dry. I also had the Thai beef salad...it would have been better with more fish sauce and cilantro. I was debating between this and the papaya salad and I wished I would have ordered the papaya salad. The mango sticky rice was good and tastes the same as any other Thai restaurant. The portions are generous. The service was good and the restaurant was clean but I think if I try Thai 55 again I will likely order something else. read more

Came here for lunch since this place was new and my coworkers wanted to check it out. When we walked in, we noticed that the building looked like it was previously a fast food joint due to the distinctive drive thru window. The dining area is tightly packed with tables. I ordered the Pad Prik with a salad. The salad took a long time to arrive, which is strange since it's just salad. When I got the salad, I didn't see any reason why it took so long since it was just some romaine lettuce with maybe a slice of cucumber and a slice of tomato with some ginger dressing on top. The Pad Prik was OK but wasn't amazing. The stir fried veggies added some much needed color to the dish. The sauce had a good amount of kick to it so be prepared for that. read more

I wanted to put in a four star and it could very well achieve it. But it needs a bit of improvement. This place has one of the best basil stir fry eggplant in the area. The eggplants are soft and flavorful, and come with a spicy kick. The dish however, is eggplant with shrimp. No such flavor in the shrimp whatsoever, in fact the shrimp part taste a bit fishy. I see a lot of potential in making this a perfect dish if everything is in harmony. Same issue with the other dish we had, the sauce with veggie part was perfect, but no flavor in the meat part (chicken) at all. It seems like they sauté the vegetables with sauce at high heat with good timing and heating power, then throw in the meat in last two second. In Asian cooking it's often practiced that meat is marinated with sauce before cooking to obtain the best flavor and lock in moisture. I hope they can improve on that. Service is on a slow side, I really wanted to have some paper napkin and more water but no one check on us. read more
