Ventured out for lunch with coworker, not in the immediate area of work but still close enough. Opted for a main dish vs something in the lunch menu, since I wanted to try their Drunken Noodles. Massive portion, sauce was saucy and made per request as medium spicy. Thai iced tea a perfect balance. We were the only diners, and wonder if this place does more take out than dine in. We were the only other table when we got here on a Saturday afternoon. The food quality is pretty bad. The calamari looked like onion rings and tasted even worse. Very small portion and very greasy. I've only had one meal here, so far (Tofu Pad Thai), so it's probably too soon to write a review. Still, it was excellent. One of the best Pad Thai's I've had in this region. Service is efficient and friendly. Air-conditioning is very good. I'm hoping to go back for more! Study the menu before heading out if your smartphone is slow or you are technology-challenged (both apply to me) - there are no physical menus, just a QR code to get you to an online menu. But, if you know what's likely to be at a Thai restaurant, they probably have it for you! And my guess is it will be very good. read more

This is Thai food at its BEST! It's not much as far as appearances and most of the people were for pickup orders but I decided to take a break and relax a little by eating in. The server was very good & knowledgeable about the menu items to near perfection and had great recommendations. We ordered here for the first time today. The food was decent and prepared as promised. However, they forgot one main dish in our order. As we unpacked our order and all sat down ready for dinner I immediately called the restaurant. A guy answered and I explained the situation. He says "ok" and there's a long pause of silence. I say "hello?" and he proceeds to tell me the food is on the counter with no apology. I explained to him that we have to go back and pick it up and he says, "That's fine." Wow. This was just a bad experience all around. First, I wanted to sit down, but there was no hostess and no greeting with just a line for takeout. Finally, I got someone's attention and they said sit anywhere. The first booth I tried had a giant pot hole almost to the floor. No real menus and the QR code menu was not working very well. I just told the waitress to bring me some fried dumplings and a Pad Thai with a Singha beer. She told me "they really didn't have any beer right now " which was weird because the table tent listed wines and beers they normally sell. I expected the dumplings to be steamed and then pan fried on one side as is traditional, but these had been through the deep fryer and basically tasted like any fried dough. These were certainly not traditionally nor good Speaking in non-traditional and not good, the Pad Thai was overcooked and over sauced into overwhelming gelatinous mass. The noodles lacked any real separation or al dente bite. There were no basil leaves, very little if any egg, and the chicken was way over cooked. After asking for and receiving my check, all my dirty dishes remained in the table even though there was only one other table who was finished. If this is some of the best Thai food in the Triangle, I may have to give up one of my favorite cuisines. This is inedible. read more

This spot is opened for dining at the moment but it's mainly takeout. I say this because I stopped in for dinner and was planning to dine in until I saw empty tables and the young man working seemed a bit annoyed that I was going to dine-in. Oops! My bad -- I'll just do take out. I ordered the green curry and a Thai tea, a bit on the pricey side but the portion was enough for two separate meals. The food was made fresh and quite delicious. Another disappointment for Thai restaurants in Durham. I really having a hard time to find a good Thai food here. The food is not good at all. I ordered the Pad Z Ew, the chicken was way overcooked to the point you can't even eat them. All you can taste on the noodles is sweet which I never have it taste like that before. The wonton in the soup tastes like they poured bunch of soy sauce to marinate the meats and that's all you can taste. Prices are high just like other restaurants nowadays. read more

My favorite Thai restaurant in Durham (so far!) Came in a few days ago and really loved my experience here. The food was good, service was friendly, and we were in and out rather quickly. I ordered a Thai iced tea and thought it was excellent. They used real tea, heavy cream, and condensed milk which really made the difference. The tea flavor was pronounced, and the amount of cream they used really balanced it out. I ordered a pad see ew, which is my favorite Thai dish, and thought it was pretty good. Definitely not the best I've ever had, but I thought the flavor was great and overall not too sweet. I will say that the beef quality was a bit lacking, and was my least favorite part about my meal. We had six people with us and I have eaten lots of Thai food and this was the worst. The service was bland yes or no answers when you order a diet beverage or a Coke they fill it up with a can so you have to pay $2.50 per drink no refills. The restaurant was empty at lunchtime. We try to visit the Thai Spoon at least once a week. They are open for indoor seating and takeout. We like to get the Thai spicy chili. It is essentially a stir fry with fantastic curry seasoning. We also always get the yellow curry and add tofu as our protein. The final mainstay dish is massamann curry. Again we get this with tofu. The owners are super nice and alway are looking for ways to make the visit more accommodating. The restaurant is in an unassuming strip mall on Guess Rd. Yet they are clearly one of the top Thai restaurants in the Triangle. read more

Get the curries! We tried the red and yellow curries with chicken and beef, and both had a good, robust flavor. (One of us found a hair in the curry, but when we told a server, she was quick to replace it for us). The papaya salad, even mild, has quite a kick, so I'd suggest not getting it hot at all if you're sensitive to heat. The pad see ew is made with regular broccoli rather than the chinese broccoli you see at tother places - fine with me, since I'm usually not a fan of the slightly bitter flavor of the chinese broccoli, and the version they have is good. The noodles are all coated with sauce (unlike some other places where some noodles are stuck together so you get a white, gooey middle). If you need extra rice, that's $1, but know that the bowls are small. My friends got the Thai iced tea, and I got a sip. I agree with some of the other yelpers that the Thai iced tea was overly sweet, and I wonder if you could tell them not to make it with so much sugar. If you're in a rush, I'd suggest calling ahead. The wait for the food was a little long, about 20+ minutes wait, although there weren't many other occupied tables. Overall though, the food was solid, and we loved the curries, salad and pad see ew. A friend took me here and we arrived as a group of 6. The resturant was completely empty and the interior was uninspiring. At least the AC is functioning well and it wasn't smelling funny. Their menu was rather simple and there wasn't a lot of choices to choose around. I stuck with my favorite green curry with beef and it wasnt bad. The appetizers weren't bad either, with the exception of the tong yum soup, which had too much mushrooms and too sour. One of my friends told me that the seafood fried rice was too oily, while the other friend told me the crispy duck is spot on. Afterall, I guess it's a resturant that's worth exploring again. (on the side note, the only waiter in the resturant was friendly but he really forgot to put in one of our entrées, so please double check with your order. ) read more

This is our tried and true location for Thai. We always order pickup and the staff is friendly. Our go to order tends to be their noodle dishes. If you want spicy, they can make it happen! I've been several times and it seems completely empty. you have to call o holler in the back to get anyone to come out front and seat you or take your order. Then they disappear again. Thai Spoon is a hidden gem in North Durham. If you like Thai food even a smidge you need to go there. The portion sizes are generally good, and I enjoy their sides. Occasionally, they get a little crazy with a certain ingredient -think excessive amounts of broccoli for example- but the balance is almost always spot-on. Nice chunks of duck in crispy batter with the usual complement of broccoli, carrots, and round onion in a light (but not soupy) sauce. Just a touch of chili pepper heat. Rice is served in a separate bowl on the side. There was enough to eat on site, leaving half to take home for another meal. Prices are higher than what shows on Yelp, but increase is moderate for the 6 years between opening and 2023 Check website for hours of operation - restaurant closes between lunch and dinner. If door is locked when you arrive during posted business hours, rattle door and shout, or call the phone # and leave message that you are waiting outside. Delicious lunch specials at this quiet, clean Thai restaurant in a strip mall. The chicken panang was the finest I've ever eaten. The server was polite, friendly and efficient. As good as our three lunch specials were, the piece de resistance was the coconut cake!!!! The $5 slice fed three of us and had the most incredible light coconut frosting. As I'm visiting my sister in Durham, I know that this restaurant will be a "Must" stop for future visits. If you live nearby, I highly recommend you stop in the Thai Spoon for lunch or dinner.
