After a few years, I returned hoping the restaurant's name change would signal an improved Pho recipe, but unfortunately, there was no change. I maintain my previous assessment: this is not authentic Pho. The broth tastes very basic or "out-of-the-box." I was quite disappointed. I suggest genuine Pho lovers avoid this location to prevent disappointment.

I would give the pho a 3.5/5. It's not the best pho I've had and I don't think I'd come back but it was good. Just didn't seem worth a second visit to me. I wish the broth was a bit more flavorful and the chicken wasn't shredded it was in large chunks so it was sort of difficult to eat

Note: Queen of Pho was renamed to Siamzap Pho on Yelp within the past couple weeks. This review describes our visit under the Queen of Pho business name. In this area, which is a pho desert, for the pho and service alone, Queen of Pho was decent. In Chapel Hill, we liked the pho at Queen of Pho better than the pho at Pho Happiness on West Franklin St: https://www.yelp.com/biz/pho-happiness-chapel-hill. The Goi Cuon (fresh spring rolls) and Bun Bo Hue (Hue-style noodle soup) left something to be desired. We appreciated our server Vicky's honesty. Honest almost to a fault (more on that below). Overall, service was top-notch from everyone including Vicky, her kids, and the kind folks in the kitchen. This is very much a humble, mom-and-pop business. The dishes came out fast, especially the pho. Here's what we got: A1. Saigon Fresh Rolls - Goi Cuon (2 for $5.99) - protein (we chose pork) wrapped in rice paper with lettuce and steamed vermicelli, served with peanut sauce P7. Pho Beef Combination - Pho Dac Biet x2 (medium bowl, $12.99 each) - beef broth, cooked 100% from beef bone (not instant), rice noodles, green and yellow onion, basil, bean sprouts, lime (seasonal); meats described below P12. Hue Style Spicy Beef Soup - Bun Bo Hue (medium bowl, $12.99) - pho noodles, beef shank, mixed beef, pork, and shrimp broth The amount of meat in the Goi Cuon was sad. Miniscule. Really thin slices of pork, not even close to any of the other Goi Cuon I've had. I do think it's nice they give you different protein options: shrimp, pork, chicken, tofu. Most Vietnamese restaurants I've been to don't offer that. And the rolls were indeed made fresh. However, the meat was close to non-existent and therefore, the rolls were more like eating vermicelli and shredded lettuce rice wraps. Whenever I order pho, I like to get the Pho Dac Biet, which is pho with everything. Here that means rare eye round steak, beef shank, fatty brisket, tripe (beef stomach), and beef tendon meatball. The broth was delicious. It tasted genuine. The meat quality was good. I think the portions could have been better, but they were fair for the price. In general, I thought the prices were reasonable. The veggie quality was good too. The only veggie that was missing was culantro, but around these parts, I'm not surprised. On the menu, I like how they say the lime is "seasonal" because pretty much every other pho restaurant I've been to that has served lemon instead of lime doesn't say why. As far as bowl sizing goes, it's relative and subjective, but I think Queen of Pho's three bowl sizes should be small, medium, and large instead of medium, large, and extra large. In other words, our "medium" bowls felt more like "small" bowls, to give you an idea of what to expect. The Bun Bo Hue was disappointing. It was too spicy. I love spicy food and it was too spicy, even for me. I did order it after reading the warning on the menu: "KINDLY BE AWARE IT'S VERY HOT SPICY!!!" Our server Vicky warned me too. So, I was okay taking the loss and ordering a second Pho Dac Biet to eat in its place. Spice aside, Queen of Pho's Bun Bo Hue was unlike any I've seen. Vicky was real with us and said the reason they serve pho noodles in their Bun Bo Hue instead of the traditional, rounder, thicker rice noodles is because of the lack of demand for Bun Bo Hue at their restaurant. In this area, that's understandable. After hearing about how spicy the Bun Bo Hue was and how they use pho noodles in it, I considered ordering one of the vermicelli (bun) dishes. Vicky told us they were out of the pickled carrots and daikon radish along with some other ingredient(s) that normally go with bun. Again, we appreciated Vicky's honesty, but I was starting to run out of options to order! We saw Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi) on the picture menu, but during our visit, Vicky said they weren't serving banh mi either. Along with the aforementioned dishes, Queen of Pho serves stir-fried egg noodles (mi), Vietnamese crispy egg noodles (mi xao gion), and rice (com) and fried rice (com chien) dishes. They also offer Vietnamese smoothies (sinh to) with boba and Vietnamese iced coffee (ca phe sua da). If you're familiar with Vietnamese food, I'd come here with tempered expectations. I think you can only expect so much in this area. Queen of Pho opened in March 2017 in the Timberlyne Village (Food Lion) shopping center near I-40 exit 266. It replaced the old Queen of Sheba Ethiopian restaurant: https://www.yelp.com/biz/queen-of-sheba-chapel-hill.

    A8. Calamari & A3. Vegetarian Spring Roll

Love me some Pho! Decided to check the place out after searching for a Pho place near my friend's house. The place is small but clean and the two women working were very polite. Yet this is 3 stars for me. The appetizers we ordered were the calamari & fried spring rolls. They were both very tasty and cooked to order! Great! The pho, it was so-so. My friend & I had better broth at other spots, so this was OKAY. They didn't have jalapeños or lime/lemon, I guess they ran out. So we put a lot of sriracha & hoisin sauce for flavor. The brisket in the pho was very chewy/tough. Not melt in your mouth good. My friend also ordered extra noodles & extra meat, but he only got 3 maybe 4 pieces of brisket in his brisket pho. He definitely didn't get extra noodles, really looked like a normal amount. I'm also not a fan of an egg in my pho. So that threw me off. As far as the service goes, for it to be a small place, the service was very slow. Multiple people had to ask for service, there were two women working but seemed only one was trying to help every table by herself. I think if we come back, we will stick to the Thai menu & try their Thai dishes.

    Veggie pho and extra noodles
    Lauren A.

Stopped in after craving pho and enjoyed the food. I ordered extra noodles for my pho because sometimes there is much more leftover soup without noodles. The portions are typical and I got two meals out of my one pho bowl, and the extra noodles really made it an entire second full meal. I was pleasantly surprised that the tofu was steamed since it is usually fried and it was perfectly tender. Overall pretty good.

    Homemade coconut cake

I love their pho, despite its flaws. The food comes out fast, the bean sprouts aren't super fresh and the meat isn't insanely tender. But I love this restaurant and it's pho. Their cake, on the other hand, is amazing all around. I believe it changes day to day, but it seems super fresh. No one explained to me what it was after I ordered, but it was a thick slice of the most delicate sponge cake with fresh (real) whipped cream, topped with condensed milk and coconut. All around incredible. I only managed to snag a picture after eating the vast majority of it.

Nice and clean minimalist atmosphere. Very friendly and efficient staff. The lunch specials come a small house salad of lettuce, carrots and a few crispy noodles with a peanut sauce. The food came out quickly. It looked great but the smell and flavor had an unusual component. Probably just authentic. But was easily fixed for my palate with the hoisin and sriracha sauce on the table.

Food was decent and service was great. I liked the fusion of Thai and Viet dishes. Ordered Pad Thai to be spicy, but was not spicy at all. They thankfully had a tray of extra spices for us when we asked. I also got a Tom Yum rice noodle soup and the soup flavor was delicious. The rice noodles were a bit over cooked and they kept breaking whenever I tried to grab a portion to eat. I really liked the fish cake balls that it came with but the ground pork had a weird taste. Overall was a decent experience but probably not my best Thai/Viet spot.

Even then, the seats inside and not in the train were also nice too :) We came on a Friday evening and were surprised that it was not busy... for like 10 minutes lol. Parking can be a little tricky in this area, since there's Weaver Street Market within the plaza, along with a few other small mom 'n pop shops! We all ordered a dish and a soup. My partner and I got pad thai, pad see ew, and tom yum soup! The restaurant had a lot of really good options, but we usually like to order our go-to Thai options on our first time visit. I can't comment on the pad see ew, but I like how the server was kind and confirmed with us the amount of heat we wanted to eat. Lol, you know it's gonna be Asian spicy when they double check with you! Tom yum soup was not bad--tangy and a little pack of heat (sorry, I can't handle too much spice) and the pad thai was chewy and had a good amount of sauce and protein with each bite! I actually liked that it had an acidity compared to some other thai places I've tried where it's just too sweet. Portion size was just right! I'd definitely come back here again to try the other options :) We had so much fun chatting that I didn't get a chance to snap a photo of the interior, but trust me, it's really nice! I'd even recommend this as a casual date night place.

If you're seeking more straightforward or "authentic" Asian cuisine, this is not the place. I read Elements served sushi at one point, but not anymore. The vibe of this place is contemporary American, on the finer dining side. If you're looking for a nice meal out in Chapel Hill, then Elements fits the bill. We liked this place better than Jujube, which also serves "elevated" Asian fusion, across the street. Owner and chef, Michael Chuong, previously worked at ãn in Cary. ãn opened in 2006 and closed in 2017. kō*än opened in ãn's place in 2019. My wife and I weren't in the Triangle when ãn was around, but we have been to kō*än and are fans. At first, I thought ãn and kō*än might be related, but I don't think they are. I'm not sure. Chuong left ãn years before it closed. Chuong opened Elements in 2012 in Chapel Hill's East 54 mixed-use development on 54. It's the same development that has Brenz Pizza Co. (another place we're a fan of), First Watch, and Hawthorne & Wood (outstanding restaurant). Parking can get a bit tight here, but we've ultimately never had a problem finding a spot. We visited on a Friday night and the restaurant was moderately busy. On this particular night, the clientele was mostly late middle age and older. Perhaps not too surprising for this part of town, and the menu appeared to appropriately reflect the tastes of the immediate area's demographic. I appreciated the simple menu, with six small plate options priced at $7-16 per plate and seven main plate options priced at $26-40 per plate. There were six items on the dessert menu ($10 each) and a decent selection of alcoholic beverages (full bar). I believe some menu items change frequently/daily. Here's what we got: Specialty Cocktails * Elementini ($13) - Absolut, PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur, lemon juice, club soda Small Plates * Hydro Bibb Wedge ($14) - Hydro Bibb, hard-boiled farm egg, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, buttermilk blue cheese dressing, sweet-n-salty lardons, crispy onions, and carrot ribbons * Kale Caesar ($13) - Tuscan kale, wasabi Caesar dressing, anchovy, panko soft-boiled egg, Parmigiano-Reggiano Main Plates * Fresh Catch - North Carolina Trout (market price - $36) - Viet style with stir-fried vegetables, crispy shallots, nuoc cham, peanuts, and rice * Bo Luc Lac ($40) - wok filet mignon, hydro Bibb, buttermilk blue cheese dressing, cherry tomatoes, pickled onions, house truffle fries Dessert * Elements Pie ($10) - dark Belgian chocolate mousse, Oreo crust, Chantilly cream, berry coulis Overall, the food and drink were delicious and presented beautifully. We liked everything. The Elementini was tasty, well balanced, and not too sweet. It was a good cocktail. My wife and I disagreed on the salads. My wife preferred the Kale Caesar while I preferred the Hydro Bibb Wedge. I do agree with my wife that the Kale Caesar was more creative. It had a hint of wasabi, which provided a nice little kick. The egg was cooked perfectly with a runny yolk. The Bibb was crisp and satisfying. I liked the small touches such as the crispy, rich lardons (bacon) and the way the egg was sliced. Both salads were hearty (not something I really say about salads) and filling, especially the Kale Caesar. The "Fresh Catch" NC Trout was indeed fresh with generous, meaty portions of fish. Again, I like the details like the thinly sliced purple carrots. Nuoc cham is the same thing as nuoc mam, a yummy Vietnamese fish sauce. The Bo Luc Lac filet mignon was another item that was cooked perfectly. The steak was super tender. However, it was also too salty. The house truffle fries were awesome. They were more like steak fries or potato wedges - thick. I will say though, as someone who has ordered a lot of shaking beef (Bo Luc Lac), $40 is pricey. Then again, it is quality filet mignon. The Elements Pie was terrific. It had lots of different textures. The dessert was creamy but not heavy, smooth, and had a delectable crust. I recommend everything listed above if they're still available when you visit. The food here is high quality. The restaurant space is deceivingly large because of multiple rooms, at least one of which was closed during our visit. There's a wraparound bar and a pleasant, mostly-covered, outdoor patio. Service was excellent. Joseph, an undergrad at UNC, was our server. He was great; very friendly and he worked hard. He was running around so much that he was visibly sweating. When my wife had to leave the table, a manager (I believe one of Michael's daughters) folded my wife's napkin.
