Vietnam salad Noodles bowl with beef
    Vanessa H.

Nice, homey establishment with great Vietnamese food! I ordered the Vietnamese noodle salad with beef, and it arrived with a good portion of meat, noodles, and veggies! The noodle salad was light and refreshing, and the sauce that it comes with is so tasty. Nothing too much to complain about. Would definitely come back again for another meal!

Quick and attentive service! The pho I got had a flavorful broth and tender meats. Everything came out very quickly too, perfect for a quick bite!

My friends and I went to pho happiness during peak hours on a Friday night. Expectedly, the wait time was long- we waited more than 30 minutes for our food. The ambiance was chill, definitely on the quieter side. The pho itself wasn't bad, I quite liked my house pho. If you're craving pho, this is a good place to go to satisfy your cravings- especially if you live in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. However, they seem a bit short staffed at the moment.

Banh mi, beef Summer Roll, shrimp

Ordered beef banh mi but not sure why it had a very fishy taste. Also ordered summer rolls, and these (thankfully) did not have the same fishy taste as the beef banh mi. Hopefully this was just a fluke of the day, but will certainly order something different if I return in the future. Prices were fair. Order was ready quickly. Staff were friendly.

We ordered delivery, and I'm confused that people are saying this is good pho. My husband and I both have COVID and I genuinely couldn't tell if I just couldn't taste anything or if the pho was genuinely flavorless, but my husband confirmed all the food had zero flavor. He ordered the wing combo that was supposed to come with fries, and there were no fries. Overall not impressed. I'd maybe try them again and order something different but I'm not in a big hurry to order again...

Outside. Storefront. Street parking around the restaurant costs money Monday-Saturday, 8am-6pm. Free on holidays and all other times.

Not bad, not great. Pho Happiness is just one of two pho restaurants in Chapel Hill that I'm aware of, the slightly older (by a couple of years) and more popular Queen of Pho being the other: https://www.yelp.com/biz/queen-of-pho-chapel-hill. Whereas Queen of Pho is located on the far north end of Chapel Hill, just off I-40 exit 266, Pho Happiness is located in the heart of Chapel Hill on West Franklin Street. Pho Happiness opened in 2019 (February 2019, I believe). It replaced the previous restaurant in this space, Guru India Restaurant: https://www.yelp.com/biz/guru-india-restaurant-chapel-hill-2. In September 2019, Chapel Hill Magazine wrote a nice article on Pho Happiness' founder Andy Hoang: https://chapelhillmagazine.com/andy-hoangs-pho-happiness-is-a-realization-of-a-lifelong-dream/. I think Pho Happiness is under new ownership since Andy. When my wife and I visited recently, our server James identified himself as the new owner. He confirmed with me he took over the business in March 2021. Andy is Vietnamese. James is Chinese. James told us his wife is Vietnamese and, IIRC, she hooked him up with Pho Happiness (or something like that). James was nice and hardworking. Curious to me was a picture of an old Asian man on the wall in the back of the restaurant, right up against the ceiling. I asked James if he knew who the guy was and he didn't know. He said the picture was placed there by the previous owner, presumably Andy. The restaurant was mostly empty during our Thursday night dinner visit starting around 7:45pm. Aside from us, there was one other couple that dined in. There were also a couple online takeout orders. I counted six (!) tablets hooked up at the counter, presumably for various food delivery services and online ordering platforms. It wasn't the first time I've seen a busy setup like that. The counter was surrounded by plexiglass due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I got the feeling that in just three short years, this restaurant has seen better days. The dining room and bar had signs of wear and "neglect." It just hadn't really been cleaned and tended to like a good dining room should. I hate to use the word "dirty," but it didn't feel completely clean. But hey, sometimes that's fine. It can add character to a place and maybe be overlooked when the food is great. Sadly, that wasn't the case here. Our booth was awkward and uncomfortable. It gave me lower back pain that lasted into the weekend. We ordered a Vietnamese Sandwich (Banh Mi) ($7) and two bowls of Special Combo Pho ($12.50 per bowl). When ordering banh mi at Pho Happiness, you choose from six types of protein: grilled pork, grilled chicken, grilled beef, tofu, BBQ pork, and pork belly. I was leaning towards BBQ pork, but I asked James what he liked and recommended and he said pork belly, so we went with pork belly. All Pho Happiness banh mi sandwiches are served on a toasted baguette with mayonnaise, cucumber, onion, "carrot pickles" (pickled carrots), jalapeno, and cilantro. The banh mi didn't look that good nor did it taste that good. I can't recommend it. The ingredient proportions were off. There were too many pickled carrots and the carrots were too wet, making the sandwich dripping wet and soggy in parts. Also, the quality of the pork belly wasn't good. I won't say it was flat-out bad because it was edible, but I didn't enjoy eating it. Unfortunate. The pho fared much better. We liked the pho, though honestly, I'm not sure I liked it enough to come back. Maybe. Pho Happiness' Special Combo Pho comes with thin sliced steak, brisket, flank, and meatballs. All of the restaurant's pho includes beansprouts, onion, and green onion and a side dish with fresh basil, cilantro, jalapeno, and lime. No culantro (sawtooth coriander), which is always a sign to me of a less "authentic" pho restaurant. Understandable, given the primary customer demographic here. All of the pho ingredients, from the noodles and meats to the fresh veggie sides, were fine. Nothing remarkable, but the bowls certainly weren't bad either. Simply put, these bowls of pho sufficiently scratched the itch. The broth was OK. Table condiments included the usual hoisin and Sriracha sauces, salt and pepper, and roasted red chili oil (which I'm always a fan of). Some of these were a must. During our visit, Pho Happiness had 10 kinds of pho on the menu. They also had three kinds of ramen ($13.50 each) - I have to admit I'm skeptical about those - Vietnamese vermicelli bowls, rice plates, and pan-fried noodles (about $12-15 each), and wings (about $9-10 per order). Service was good. Parking in the immediate vicinity, whether street or parking lot, costs money at certain times. We parked around the corner on North Graham Street for free because it was after hours. At the time of writing this review, street parking rates are enforced Monday-Saturday, 8am-6pm. Otherwise, it's free. If you have to pay, use the ParkMobile app. It makes things easier.

I want to preface this by saying that I never have been so upset at a restaurant. My wife and I have worked in the service industry and know how much guests can blow things out of proportion. We also know the dread of busy nights. Tonight was not one of those situations. We got sat down around 6:15 and promptly put in our order with Waitress 1. Over the next half hour, the restaurant filled up (Note that maybe 10 parties, around 30-40 guests). About 45 minutes in, Waitress 2 comes to our table and apologizes for the delay. She says it's a busy night and from my seat, I can see a lot of to go orders even though the seated has not moved (no one new was sat for about hour after everyone sat down). Like I said, I understand a busy time and get why. This is not the reason for my 1 star! 45 minute wait is long, but not something I can't understand or can't sympathize with. At this time (about 1 hr), Waitress 2 apologizes again and tells us that somehow our order wasn't sent to the kitchen. We also found out it was wrong. Not a problem still as she offers discount 20-30%, and says she'll put our order in front. She also says she'll give us another order of egg rolls that we haven't yet received. We wait another 30 minutes while I see the other clients sit down with us finally get their food and all after she told us she would put ours up front (we didn't ask her but she told us she would since it was their fault). Finally about an hour and half of total waiting with no food, my wife and mother in law decided to leave. I stayed behind and asked for it to go and a time estimate. They said sorry, we'll get started on it right away (hadn't started yet but can see the kitchen has prepared everyone's food and to go orders). I had to wait another 15-20 minutes for the food to be given to me after I voiced my displeasure. At the same time, they were telling other waiting to go guests that it would take 10 more minutes though I saw two ladies waiting for at least a half hour after ordering online. I understand busy times and I understand the stress, but it is unreasonable to have multiple people lie to your face and say that food is coming and being prepared. I would honestly give a 0 if I could. Please look at my history of check in and reviews. I eat at many places all the time and rarely (maybe once or twice before) have given a 1 star and actually wanted to give 0. My suggestion would be to stay away if you don't want to be lied to directly and wait 2 hours just to have food prepared. I have also attached a photo of the eggrolls that qere given to us that were not even fried correctly.

Girls just wanna have pho! Stumbled upon this fantastic gem, the most delicious grilled pork banh mi I ever had, the bread was deliciously soft in the middle and a crispy crunch on the outside mixed with all the wonderful flavors. The crab rangoons came out hot and piping were perfectly fried with crispy ends! Excellent customer service. Thank you!

LIKE WHAAAAAT! I should've realized it when I saw that part of the name of the restaurant was "Station"! Even then, the seats inside and not in the train were also nice too :) We came on a Friday evening and were surprised that it was not busy... for like 10 minutes lol. Parking can be a little tricky in this area, since there's Weaver Street Market within the plaza, along with a few other small mom 'n pop shops! We all ordered a dish and a soup. My partner and I got pad thai, pad see ew, and tom yum soup! The restaurant had a lot of really good options, but we usually like to order our go-to Thai options on our first time visit. I can't comment on the pad see ew, but I like how the server was kind and confirmed with us the amount of heat we wanted to eat. Lol, you know it's gonna be Asian spicy when they double check with you! Tom yum soup was not bad--tangy and a little pack of heat (sorry, I can't handle too much spice) and the pad thai was chewy and had a good amount of sauce and protein with each bite! I actually liked that it had an acidity compared to some other thai places I've tried where it's just too sweet. Portion size was just right! I'd definitely come back here again to try the other options :) We had so much fun chatting that I didn't get a chance to snap a photo of the interior, but trust me, it's really nice! I'd even recommend this as a casual date night place.

This is a casual, fun, Asian-Latin fusion restaurant and bar. Inside, the space is divided into two sides: bar and dining room. A big "LUCHA TIGRE" covers one of the bar walls and pop art decorates the main dining room wall. They also have a somewhat spacious, partially-covered patio. Overall, it's got a neat vibe. I booked our reservations on Lucha Tigre's website at https://luchatigre.com/ The reservation process was unconventional because instead of getting booked immediately, I had to wait for an email confirmation. On a Sunday, I got a "Pending Reservation Request" email at 2:16pm followed by a confirmation email at 2:52pm, so a 36-minute turnaround time. I got us a same-day reservation at 5pm, not a peak time as evidenced by the lack of customers upon our arrival. However, business had picked up by the time we left around 6:30. The menu had an interesting selection of food and drink. A few good examples of the Asian-Latin fusion served here include General Tso's Chicken Empanadas ($5 each), Pozole Ramen ($15.99), and Pad Thai Al Pastor ($16.99). They also serve straight-up Asian and Latin dishes like pho ($14.99) and tacos ($2 and $4 each). Drink-wise, they had a full bar with a decent selection that included tequila, mezcal, and sake cocktails. They even had a cocktail made with Japanese Suntory Whisky Toki. Here's what my wife and I had: Bebidas Especiales (cocktails) * El Conquistador ($14) - Tequila Herradura Silver, freshly-squeezed citrus, Cointreau Tapas * Tuna Tiradito ($16.99) - sashimi tuna with aji amarillo pepper, onions, cilantro, roasted corn nuts, and fresh citrus; Nikkei cuisine * Bulgogi Nachos ($15.99) - giant-size nachos with Korean BBQ beef, pico, kimchi, cheese, crema, jalapenos, black beans Entrees * Salmon Poke ($18.99) - raw salmon with sesame, onion, and tamari with seaweed salad, rice, and avocado * Pollo Saltado ($16.99) - stir-fried chicken, tomato, cilantro, onion; served over fries with rice and salad In general, we were happy or content with everything. Some dishes were better than others. Beautiful presentation all around. The El Conquistador was a margarita that was more tart and less sweet. It was refreshing. I liked the Tuna Tiradito more than my wife. Tiradito is like Peruvian sashimi. I thought this dish was fine. I could see why my wife didn't like it as much because the texture of the tuna wasn't as fresh and appetizing as the tuna sashimi we're accustomed to. This tuna was a bit more "pasty" in texture. Also, the roasted corn nuts, which we think were the same as hominy, didn't add much. The standout dish was the Bulgogi Nachos. I saw pictures of it on Yelp and knew we had to order it. The portion size was huge and the Korean beef bulgogi was sweet and savory. We devoured the nachos. They were incredibly delicious and addictive. A lot of textures and flavors, and they all blended and worked well together. The Salmon Poke was solid. I recommend it if you like poke. Admittedly, it was better than we both expected because we haven't encountered a lot of great poke in the Chapel Hill-Durham area. Decent portions and fresh salmon, seaweed salad, and other ingredients. I will say the rice tasted plain and not seasoned with rice vinegar. The poke came with two sauces on the side, tamari (a type of Japanese soy sauce) and what I think was a type of curry sauce. The salmon was already nicely marinated and tasty so the sauces weren't needed. The Pollo Saltado was OK. It wasn't among the best I've had, but it was "authentic." The problems with this dish were the chicken was too dry and tough and the fries were underseasoned (not salty enough). Unfortunately, the salad was the best part of this dish. Our server Taryn was great. She was attentive and efficient. Everything we ordered came out fairly quickly. One detail I really liked and appreciated was Taryn neatly packed our leftovers and labeled and dated the boxes. That's an extra level of service you don't get at most other sit-down restaurants. Lucha Tigre opened in December 2012. It replaced the Chapel Hill location of The Original Flying Burrito: https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-original-flying-burrito-chapel-hill You can find it in the Midtown Market shopping plaza, north of UNC's campus. Deep fried sushi definitely feels like a sin but the bagel roll was simple and tasty! A good crunch on the outside and the creamy inside was a nice textural experience. I wish there was more flavor in the actual salmon and roll. I asked for the spicy tuna to be replaced with soft shell crab in the to all the rolls I've loved before order but I don't think it was (the server did say they could). Our original plan was to get 1 Braised Beef Noodle Soup and 1 Beef Filet & Tripe that we'd both share, but we only got half of that plan fulfilled this time. The waiter said that they are out of the tripe appetizer, which we enjoyed in our first visit few months ago. So we were really disappointed that they were out of their best appetizer. Wheat is a small indoor restaurant in downtown Chapel Hill, on the same spot as where another bad Chinese restaurant used to be. Its cramped space and uninviting ambiance make Wheat an unpleasant spot to eat. It took around 15 min. for us to get our 1 order of Braised Beef Noodle Soup, which tasted the same as we remembered when we first tried it. It comes with about 4 chunks of braised beef, 1 egg. 1 baby bokchoy, and noodles in spicy & sour soup with chili oil. $14+ for a beef noodle dish like this is not bad but I can think of other restaurants in Triangle NC that serve a similar beef noodle soup with better ambiance and customer service. Overall Score: 2.4/5

My partner and I were extremely disappointed by our experience on Friday, 2/13. We had a 7:30…read morereservation and arrived about 10-15 minutes early to make sure we wouldn't miss it. When we checked in, we were told, "Sorry, there was a mix-up, but we're working on it." We weren't told what the issue was, and shortly after, a table was brought in from outside for us to use. We stayed optimistic and excited to try the food despite the confusion. Unfortunately, when we sat down, the table was dirty. As soon as we placed our hands on it, dark powder came off onto our hands and clothing. We tried not to let this ruin our mood, since we had heard great things about this restaurant. It took a while for our waitress to come take our order, which we understood because they were busy. However, there was confusion with my order. I asked for salmon sashimi, but she assumed I meant salmon roe. When she brought it out and I explained I had ordered regular salmon sashimi, she implied I had ordered incorrectly and asked if I just wanted the roe instead. When I said I'd prefer what I originally ordered, she repeatedly warned that the kitchen was backed up and it would take a long time, which made me feel discouraged from getting what I actually ordered. Meanwhile, my partner ordered the midnight ceviche and we shared pan-fried pork dumplings. The dumplings arrived room-temperature, and the ceviche came without cilantro and with only two chips for the entire dish. At that point, we were so disappointed that we asked for the check while still waiting for the sashimi. When it finally arrived, it wasn't bad, but it was so citrusy that the flavor of the salmon was hard to taste. Throughout the evening, our waitress (listed on the check as "Mridula") was noticeably less attentive to us than to nearby tables. I'm not usually someone who complains about restaurant experiences, but this visit felt like one disappointment after another. The only positives were the drinks and, to some extent, the dumplings. I would like to give this place another try in the future, but given how disappointing our experience was, I don't believe we will, particularly considering the high prices relative to the quality of the experience. I sincerely hope others had a better experience than we did on the night before Valentine's Day. (I have provided a picture of my partners finger after he ran it across the dirty table, which isn't the best of quality due to the lighting)
