My wife and I enjoyed our dinner at Elements in Chapel Hill. This restaurant serves what I'd describe as both modern Asian fusion (with a mostly Vietnamese influence) and New American cuisine. If you're seeking more straightforward or "authentic" Asian cuisine, this is not the place. I read Elements served sushi at one point, but not anymore. The vibe of this place is contemporary American, on the finer dining side. If you're looking for a nice meal out in Chapel Hill, then Elements fits the bill. We liked this place better than Jujube, which also serves "elevated" Asian fusion, across the street. Owner and chef, Michael Chuong, previously worked at ãn in Cary. ãn opened in 2006 and closed in 2017. kō*än opened in ãn's place in 2019. My wife and I weren't in the Triangle when ãn was around, but we have been to kō*än and are fans. At first, I thought ãn and kō*än might be related, but I don't think they are. I'm not sure. Chuong left ãn years before it closed. Chuong opened Elements in 2012 in Chapel Hill's East 54 mixed-use development on 54. It's the same development that has Brenz Pizza Co. (another place we're a fan of), First Watch, and Hawthorne & Wood (outstanding restaurant). Parking can get a bit tight here, but we've ultimately never had a problem finding a spot. We visited on a Friday night and the restaurant was moderately busy. On this particular night, the clientele was mostly late middle age and older. Perhaps not too surprising for this part of town, and the menu appeared to appropriately reflect the tastes of the immediate area's demographic. I appreciated the simple menu, with six small plate options priced at $7-16 per plate and seven main plate options priced at $26-40 per plate. There were six items on the dessert menu ($10 each) and a decent selection of alcoholic beverages (full bar). I believe some menu items change frequently/daily. Here's what we got: Specialty Cocktails * Elementini ($13) - Absolut, PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur, lemon juice, club soda Small Plates * Hydro Bibb Wedge ($14) - Hydro Bibb, hard-boiled farm egg, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, buttermilk blue cheese dressing, sweet-n-salty lardons, crispy onions, and carrot ribbons * Kale Caesar ($13) - Tuscan kale, wasabi Caesar dressing, anchovy, panko soft-boiled egg, Parmigiano-Reggiano Main Plates * Fresh Catch - North Carolina Trout (market price - $36) - Viet style with stir-fried vegetables, crispy shallots, nuoc cham, peanuts, and rice * Bo Luc Lac ($40) - wok filet mignon, hydro Bibb, buttermilk blue cheese dressing, cherry tomatoes, pickled onions, house truffle fries Dessert * Elements Pie ($10) - dark Belgian chocolate mousse, Oreo crust, Chantilly cream, berry coulis Overall, the food and drink were delicious and presented beautifully. We liked everything. The Elementini was tasty, well balanced, and not too sweet. It was a good cocktail. My wife and I disagreed on the salads. My wife preferred the Kale Caesar while I preferred the Hydro Bibb Wedge. I do agree with my wife that the Kale Caesar was more creative. It had a hint of wasabi, which provided a nice little kick. The egg was cooked perfectly with a runny yolk. The Bibb was crisp and satisfying. I liked the small touches such as the crispy, rich lardons (bacon) and the way the egg was sliced. Both salads were hearty (not something I really say about salads) and filling, especially the Kale Caesar. The "Fresh Catch" NC Trout was indeed fresh with generous, meaty portions of fish. Again, I like the details like the thinly sliced purple carrots. Nuoc cham is the same thing as nuoc mam, a yummy Vietnamese fish sauce. The Bo Luc Lac filet mignon was another item that was cooked perfectly. The steak was super tender. However, it was also too salty. The house truffle fries were awesome. They were more like steak fries or potato wedges - thick. I will say though, as someone who has ordered a lot of shaking beef (Bo Luc Lac), $40 is pricey. Then again, it is quality filet mignon. The Elements Pie was terrific. It had lots of different textures. The dessert was creamy but not heavy, smooth, and had a delectable crust. I recommend everything listed above if they're still available when you visit. The food here is high quality. The restaurant space is deceivingly large because of multiple rooms, at least one of which was closed during our visit. There's a wraparound bar and a pleasant, mostly-covered, outdoor patio. Service was excellent. Joseph, an undergrad at UNC, was our server. He was great; very friendly and he worked hard. He was running around so much that he was visibly sweating. When my wife had to leave the table, a manager (I believe one of Michael's daughters) folded my wife's napkin. Pretty good food, with a few minor critiques. Service was average and the interior was elegant. We got there at 6 pm on a Sunday night, and it was only us, so it was very quiet. We started off with the walnut shrimp I believe and their tuna nachos. Both were delicious and better than the entrees in my opinion. I ordered the breaded chicken with shredded apples on top. Overall, it was a pretty sloppy plating, and they gave us a gigantic portion of 2 chicken breasts, which was great, but definitely tiring to eat. The chicken was ok, but the apples added a unique sweet touch to it. The bo luc lac was so soft and delicious. The best out of the rest. The japchae was very flavorful, but nothing about it really stood out. We also ordered their special which was a type of steak, I don't remember what it was in particular, but it was just ok. TL;DR: Superbly-prepared asian-fusion We stopped by Elements for lunch on our way home from Meadowmont and we're glad we did. The space is medium-sized and decorated with light wood and white paint. There are three-four smaller rooms, which keeps the noise down. The menu is small but we both found more than one item we wanted to try. I had a veggie and tofu dish and my companion had a trout special. Our server, Lizzy, provided exemplary service, patiently answering all our newby questions. The wine-by-the-glass list and the beer list are abundant enough to offer something for everyone. The star of the show was the preparation of super-fresh ingredients, spiced just right. Lizzy told us that everything is made to order from scratch and the dishes sure tasted like it. My veggies were done to perfection, just crunchy enough. The tofu was done with a light cornstarch glaze, and the seasoning sauce was to die for. Note, that from-scratch preparation means the service isn't MacDonalds-quick, but that's not what we were after. The prices seemed very reasonable for what we received. We'll be back. read more

Dinner with 5 family members last night at Elements. As good as always with attentive service, well prepared food and appetizers. We arrived at 5:45 and the diningroom was packed by 6:30 on a weeknight. We are sad to see the restaurant close, as June 21 will be their last service. We may have to make the jaunt to Cary to try out chef Michael Chuong's new restaurant. If it's as good as Elements has been over the past years, it will be worth the trip. read more

My son and I went to this Asian fusion restaurant in Chapel hill. It was pretty tasty! We ordered 2 appetizers. The chopper wedge salad and tuna tartar wraps were intricate and delicious! It taste better than the picture looks! The romaine chopped wedge salad had strips of warm crunchy crisps that make the dish! Two main dishes are the seafood Cioppino and salt and pepper catch. Both were delicious! I loved the salt and pepper catch (fish) that was battered lightly and fried to perfection. The cioppino was not as spicy as they claimed it would be so we asked the waiter for some chili oil. The service was good. I had made reservations for my hubby and I for a Saturday early evening. We had a great spot in the back overlooking the front street. Our server was great. The restaurant is very clean, very modern and the low lighting made for great photos. I was impressed along with their cocktails and wine list, they had a nonalcoholic menu. Hubby ordered a mojito and I ordered an espresso martini. They were both delicious! Hubby ordered the Bo kho Vietnamese beef stew. He loved it. It was a beautiful dish. The star of the night, my walnut prawns. OMG. This dish was spectacular. 6 huge prawns delicately fried with a honey glaze served atop a bed of arugula slaw and a bowl of rice. Wonderfully executed! and absolutely delish!! I forgot to mention the appetizer brussels sprouts special. It was lightly fried with a Thai chili sauce and it was amazing. I cannot emphasize how delicious this appetizer was. At first, I was disappointed because they took the sushi off the menu but I couldn't be more satisfied with our service, the beautiful ambiance, the wonderful food, and the experience. This is an upper scale choice for anyone in the Chapel Hill area or in my case staying at the Aloft which is a short walk nearby. I sat at the bar and had great service from one of the floor waiters. I ordered the special appetizer which was a ricotta toast. Even though the crostini was a little well done to the point it was hard to bite it was still delicious. The ricotta was incredibly creamy and, the sweet red peppers on top were a perfect compliment. My main course was a crab ramen. This was packed with giant pieces of crab which was awesome for 28 dollars but the Ramen noodles sauce felt like I was eating a packet of instant Ramen seasoning. It was a lot of sodium at once. I had dessert as well. A brioche bread pudding with salted caramel drizzle and housemade ice cream. A little too doughy for me but great experience and flavor combos, thus the 4 stars. read more

Solid menu but not what I expected I just want to start off and say that the food tastes great, but at the same time subverted my expectations. I wanted to check this place out because the their asian fusion concept intrigued me. We started off with the crunchy tacos and xiaolongbao. The cruchy tacos were super tasty - raw tuna in a crunchy shell. However, the xiaolongbao were...regular xiaolongbao. Not sure how it is fusion. Also, as someone who hails from NYC, I found the price point of $12 for 4 bao to be wayyy overpriced for regular bao. For the main courses, we had the red curry linguine and bo lu lac. While tasty, calling this food "fusion" would be tenuous. Can barely taste the curry in the linguine - tasted like regular Italian food to me. The bo lu lac was basically steak frites. The filet mignon is supposedly "wokked" but just tasted like regular steak with a little soy sauce on the outside. I did like the truffle wedges that came with it tho - big fan of wedges in general. We closed the meal with elements pie which was basically like a oreo chocolate cake. All in all - good food. I went to Elements on a Thursday evening as part of a large group, seated in our own private room with four tables of eight. It was very loud: the hard surfaces echoed all the talking, and it was difficult to hear even the people seated right next to you (just word to the wise if you are thinking about bringing a large group or if you go on a night that is especially crowded). Each table was given three appetizers: Thai Brussels sprouts, cha gio tom cua (crispy spring rolls with pork and shrimp, with DIY mint, cucumber, and lettuce to wrap them in), and dry pot cauliflower. All were OK, but all were very oily. Chili sauce and chili oil provided most of the seasoning for each, so there was very little flavor variety between the three appetizers. For my main course I had the whole yelloweye snapper served crispy on a bed of arugula, shallots, and peanuts. The fish was cooked beautifully and served with nuoc cham (which would have been better with more lime juice to brighten the otherwise dull profile of the sauce). Beef udon noodles and Madras curry grilled lamp chops were popular with our group, but I can only speak for the sesame green beans under the lambchops (they were oily, and did not retain any of their supposed sesame seasoning). The desserts we were offered -- cheesecake, a chocolate mousse with a thick Oreo cookie crust, and freshly made Chinese donut holes with dulce de leche -- were tasty but much heavier and richer than they needed to be, especially following the food described above. I wish the sorbet selection had been offered. Overall, the service was attentive and the table decor attractive, but the food I had was far too oily, lacked flavor, and was not especially notable. What a great date spot for some contemporary Asian fusion! My boyfriend and I came here for an anniversary and found the ambiance to be intimate and perfect. The food was also stellar, but be prepared to spend a lot of money. We shared the Sea Bass and Russian Roll for our entrees. The Sea Bass was TO DIE FOR! I practically inhaled the dish because it was so so so good. It's Chilean Sea Bass and asparagus in an aged miso, maple syrup, soy beurre blanc sauce. Although it was heavenly, I don't think it was worth $36 because of the tiny portion, especially since it was advertised as a "main plate," not one of their "small plates". The Russian Roll (Spicy Yellowtail, Blue Crab, Tobiko, Cucumber, Salmon Outside, Russian Aioli) was good but again, I thought it was overpriced at $16. The good thing about the small portions is that you'll definitely have room for dessert! We decided to get two desserts because their dessert menu looked amazing. We got the Key Lime Creme Brulee and Molten Chocolate Cake (Indulgent Hot Chocolate Lava Cake, Raspberry Sauce, Vanilla Ice Cream). The Key Lime Creme Brulee was the perfect amount of sour and sweet and was cooked to perfection. The Molten Cake is baked to order, so they have a disclaimer that this will require 15 minutes of baking! So if you are in a rush, I recommend placing this order as you're eating your entrees because you do NOT want to miss out on it! So gooey, warm, and decadent. This review only applies to 1) their sushi; 2) their bread basket and 3) their takeout experience. My wife and I were in the mood for some higher end sushi and after a not-great experience at Aki Hana plus living too far from M Sushi and O-Ku she remembered that a friend was recently talking about the good sushi at Elements. I was a little hesitant at first because the prices are higher than any of those places mentioned above and it seemed like every roll featured either tempura or salmon which aren't usually my jam in the sushi world. We bit the proverbial bullet and ordered the tuna three ways roll, the mango salmon roll and the red dragon roll. Also ordered the bread basket because it looked amazing (and was). 1. Bread basket -- the focaccia, homemade crackers and bao were all fantastic as was the whipped honey butter. 2. Tuna three ways roll -- there were none of the alleged gold flakes but there was a healthy portion of truffle ponzu which was amazing. Thinking back I'm not sure if it needed the toro other than maybe for its luscious texture because the ponzu overwhelmed the taste. All in all still a great roll. 3. Mango salmon roll -- my favorite -- a delicious interplay because the silky and unctuous salmon and the perfectly ripe mangos. Never had anything like it and could eat one of these rolls almost every day and not get tired of it. 4. Red Dragon Roll -- nowhere near as spicy as something touting 'reaper mayo' would lead one to believe but still nice interplay because the tuna tartare, cucumber, salmon and soy glaze. I had a lovely lunch at Elements the other day. Everything on the menu looked fantastic- I had a hard time choosing. All the entrees come with soup or side salad. I ended up choosing the poke bowl with a side salad. My dining companions chose walnut prawns and shrimp pad Thai. Everything was amazing! The ambiance was very beautiful and calming- it's almost as if they're going for a spa vibe there. Beautiful spot for some elevated Asian fusion dishes! Came here for dinner with 4 friends last night and was immediately impressed by the ambiance upon arrival. It looks very romantic and elegant, with candles adorning each table. They appeared to be doing a good job with keeping parties sufficiently spaced out inside. I ordered the sparkling St. Germain for my cocktail, which was perfect and very reminiscent of a French 75. For food, I chose the special, which consisted of a fried white fish atop a slightly sweet, slightly spicy coconut red curry with vegetables and a side of steamed rice. Delicious! The fish was perfectly crispy, and the curry had good flavor (but didn't necessarily taste unique compared to other red curries I've had). My friends liked their dishes for the most part as well - seemed like the chicken tonkatsu was the winner of the night. The sushi only got medicocre reviews. I probably wouldn't take someone here if you're looking to impress, but I would come if you're just looking for a good meal. It seems the menu is constantly rotating and when I had dinner here last weekend, there were predominantly vietnamese-inspired dishes. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. We had a spring roll appetizer, a steak dish, and the special. The filet mignon was served in bite size pieces and marinated/dressed in a flavorful sauce. The beef was cooked medium rare and not chewy or tough at all, it was delicious. The special of the night was a crab and salmon wellington, also very well executed. Even the sides were great and we cleaned our plates. Off the dessert menu, we ordered a coffee flavored creme brulee and a bread pudding. Once again, the food did not disappoint. The server was knowledgeable about the menu, checked in with us often, and made sure we were taken care of despite it being towards the end of the night. I love this place! My favorite dish is their Pad Thai; it's not what I would call authentic, and it does depend on the current cook, I have not been disappointed. I think they do consistently have good cooks and quality ingredients. It's busy at night so the service is slower, but they are attentive. We usually plan to miss the crowds. We went on a Tuesday night so it was kind of quiet but I can see it getting kind of lively towards the weekend. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Please note that they only serve sushi thurs-sat, I was under the impression that this was a staple menu item when looking at other yelp pics. Let's start with the service. Our waiter Matt needs a raise - he made our entire experience even better! He was super knowledgeable, he had honest recommendations about the menu items, and I'm glad I trusted his opinion. He even gave us a little background on the chef prior to us ordering. My water was never empty. He checked up on us multiple times just to make sure we were okay. Easily some of the best service I've had while eating out. Now let's talk about the food. For apps we got the calamari, spring rolls and a grilled peach and burrata salad. We torn it up, everything was gone within mins of it touching the table needless to say it was good. My boyfriend ordered the seafood hot and sour soup. It took everything in me not to snatch the bowl away and take it as my own. It was SO freakin gooood, I thought about just ordering another bowl of that for my entree. Instead I ordered the scallops. The walnut prawns are a house specialty and my favorite; I've ordered them on every visit so I can't personally comment on other menu items. However, my dining companions all praised their choices. At busy times, the noise level can be loud enough to make conversation challenging, so we try to go at off-hours. Only complaint is that some of the chairs are worn and wobbly. On my last visit, we had to switch out chairs so the linebacker in the party didn't feel like his chair was going to collapse. Elements - an Asian-European jewel in Chapel Hill Whenever I travel to RTP on business, I dine at Elements for several reasons. First, the proprietor, Van, is exceptionally charming and kind. She greets everyone with the warmest smile that never fails to brighten my day. Second, the modern Asian and European fusion cuisine is prepared exclusively with locally sourced dairy, organic ginger, Cheshire pork, and fresh seafood caught off the coast of NC. Third, I always order the same meal. Seriously. For starters, the HaNoi Calamari - prepared in crispy batter, with tender calamari, hint of dill and turmeric (citrusy, slightly bitter, with peppery spice) on a bed of fresh arugula, peanuts, and balsamic vinegar pepper slaw - and Chã Giò Tôm Cua, or deep-fried Vietnamese egg rolls - irresistibly crunchy, stuffed with pork, fresh shrimp, crab, onions, jicama, wood ear mushrooms (like in Chinese mu shu), crispy Baby Romaine, served with a zesty chili, fish, garlic sauce - are sublime. For my entrée, I ALWAYS get the Chicken en Croute, where Thai curry (yellow curry, coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, shallot, cumin/coriander seeds, and turmeric) meets Southern Chicken Pot Pie. Mildly spicy. Simply heavenly!! While my business travel takes me to all the world's epicurean capitals, I've never seen this dish anywhere else. The shrimp was fried to perfection and the portions are really large. chicken curry: I'm not a huge fan of curry; this one was decent. chilean sea bass: really good sear and very buttery and flakey interior, sauce was a tad too sweet. Also, a relatively small portion, so wouldn't recommend for people with large appetites. It's also not a very sustainable fish... fried apple pie dessert: looks like a large empanada, tastes better than apple pie because there's more flakey crust. goes well with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce complementary bday chocolate terrine: tasted like choc mouse combined with a kit kat. Apparently the bday desserts change on a daily basis. Service: server was nice, but didn't really know how to answer questions about the menu and had to go back to the kitchen and check. Elements is my very favorite restaurant. I had an amazing and flavorful dinner there a few nights ago. Van, the owner, is a sweetheart. She came over to our table and we chatted about the wonderful flavors. My dinner was soft shelled crabs with a wonderful peanut sauce. I tried Elements based on Yelp reviews. I was not disappointed. The food category listed is Asian so when I looked at the menu it was different than I expected. Nothing too strange just different. I went with the waiters recommendation. The spring rolls, called something else on the menu, were the best I've had in a very long time. I also had the salmon which was in a flaky crust puffy pastry. It's was delicious. The service was also exceptional right from the greeting when I entered to moment I left. A worthwhile dining experience. read more

I've spent quiet a few night at this restaurant; chatting with locals and tasting some of the best dishes I have ever had. Van and Mark run such an impressive restaurant. The staff are incredible and have such an attention to detail. Gorden, the bartender, knows how to hold a conversation while mixing some of the most tasty cocktails I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Nice interior, modern spartan chic. I know it's an Asian wine bar but for such a high class restaurant it should have a better craft beer selection. The cocktail list looks good and the one ordered was well made. The server and service was excellent. She knows her stuff. The spring rolls were good but nothing special. The blue crab sashimi came without tobiko but it was corrected immediately when brought to the server's attention. The pickled ginger and wasabi made it. We gave our server several options and her recommendation of the curry was very flavorful and helped by the spicy sriracha ketchup provided when we asked for more spice. Overall a good meal but I was expecting more from an upscale restaurant. Others have food just as tasty for less. The great service though is the saving grace. read more
