I'm a little biased because I live down the way from Byrd's and I am not ashamed to say that when looking for a house in the area I decided to buy our house because Byrd's was down the street after trying their BBQ. I love watching this business grow since we have been in the neighborhood. The owners James and Kim and the nicest people you will ever meet. All of the staff are consistently friendly, and I have never had a bad interaction - even when they are packed... which is most of the time. When I moved to North Carolina, I was excited to explore the BBQ scene. Unfortunately, several places I tried were disappointing. I'm not going to get into the Eastern NC versus Texas-style debate because I enjoy them both. Simply some of the barbecue I tried was just not very good. Then I found Byrd's. I don't know what James is doing back there in the kitchen, but the brisket is excellent. The ribs are my other favorite, and, as an added bonus, they serve breakfast! I had the brisket omelet, and it was amazing. They have great food, genuinely kind people, and a neighborhood business worth supporting. Go check them out, you won't regret it. read more

Excellent BBQ spot. If you're in the area or traveling along I-85, it's a quick and easy stop just off the highway. The restaurant has a modern fast-casual vibe, both inside and out, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. The food is what really steals the show. We ordered a burger with fries, a pork sandwich with fries, pulled pork with green beans and potato salad, and brisket with coleslaw and every single item was delicious. The standout was definitely the brisket. It had an incredible peppery rub and perfectly smoked flavor that kept you going back for bite after bite. As a vegetarian I love for barbecue sided. These are the best sides I have had in Durham. The Mac and cheese was creamy, the mashed potatoes were wonderful and flavorful. My favorite new find is the corn fritters. And the banana pudding was divine. I've found my new go-to for myself and all my vegetarian friends. First time customer, not sure if we will be back! I placed an order online at 1:54pm (full rack ribs, 1/2 lb pork, 1lb brisket, pint of collards) for a 4:45pm pick up. I received a phone call at 2:00 saying they have been so busy today they only had a half rack of ribs left, no big deal that is fine. They said we can substitute for either the brisket or pulled pork. I opted for the pork since we only ordered a 1/2 lb. So I go about my day thinking everything is good. Well I get a phone call at 4:32pm (my husband was already on his way to pick up at 4:45). Hey I am sorry I don't know why no one told you the first time but we have no brisket left. First I don't understand because the first person said we could substitute the ribs for any of the other meats but ok whatever. He said we can substitute it out or just refund the brisket. I say we would like to have the food we ordered, can you refund the brisket please. I get a yes that's no problem. My husband gets there and is told I cancelled the order and they refunded our account (mind you when I hung up with Byrds I called him to let him know what was happening). My husband proceeds to say no she wanted to just be refunded for the brisket we want everything else. They tell him they have no ribs left now since I cancelled, gave him the remaining order and then somehow found the ribs and cashes my husband out. To say our first experience was less than impressive was an understatement! From a food prospective everything was good but if we do try them again it will be a long time and after we try other places! read more

I am an original NC boy living in Florida. Here camping and found this place. OMG. The BBQ was awesome. The slaw was perfect. The hush puppies were on point. Everything was great right down to the tea. My friend had fried okra and I got a couple bites. Delicious. Brings back so many memories of hickory smoked BBQ when I was a kid growing up in central NC. I've heard of Byrd's over the years, but have never been as I live quite a long way away. I learned today they have new owners as of about six months ago. Not all things that used to be avail are on the menu anymore, but it still looks like quite a lot to me! It's a small place with about eight tables for four on either side of the dining area when you enter the front door. Very clean and bright with lots of windows. Onto the ordering counter and I encountered a friendly young man who couldn't have been kinder and more patient in answering all my questions as a newbie. It was still breakfast time and decided to stick with that even tho he said I could get some bbq if I wanted. I got a bacon, fried egg, and cheese sandwich on Texas toast. Everything was cooked perfectly and hot the spot. It's obvious they have lots of regulars as most who came in knew everyone's name whether getting orders to go or to eat in. It's nice to have loyalty that passes from one owner to another. I actually came over to buy a couple jars of blue cheese dressing from the recipe of the old Hartman's Steakhouse. I never made it to the steakhouse before it closed down years ago, but do love blue cheese dressing. If it's that good to start selling it again I had to get some! As soon as I got home I made a salad and typed it with the blue cheese dressing. It was very tasty and I'm sure will make those who grew up with it very happy to have it again! read more

The server recommended the brisket so we tried that. I loved the crunchy and spicy crust on the brisket, but my wife is spice phobic so she could only eat the innards -- leaving more for me. First off, I'm glad that I came here for lunch. The hospitality itself deserves a 5-star! The folks here are so kind and sweet. From the people working in the front to the ones in the back, preparing the food. The food is just as great. I ordered a BBQ pulled pork sandwich, fries, and sweet tea. The pork was tender and loved the bark on the ends. It was all delicious! The slaw was perfect and the vinegar base bbq sauce was the MVP! I appreciate this place serving two types of sauce. I was so tempted to try the specials for the day, they had pork ribs and brisket for the day but I was just too full to handle any more food. I can't wait to stop here again for another bite to eat. I am not usually one to leave reviews but I was WOWed by this place. First off the service, the people are so nice and friendly. I asked about the Brunswick stew and he let me try it (and dare I say it was amazing). We had the 3 meat platter and The brisket is next level. The pulled pork and ribs also 10/10 but the brisket stole the show for me. The bbq sauce also amazing. Place is super clean. Next time I'm in NC, I will most definitely be back! read more
