Even then, the seats inside and not in the train were also nice too :) We came on a Friday evening and were surprised that it was not busy... for like 10 minutes lol. Parking can be a little tricky in this area, since there's Weaver Street Market within the plaza, along with a few other small mom 'n pop shops! We all ordered a dish and a soup. My partner and I got pad thai, pad see ew, and tom yum soup! The restaurant had a lot of really good options, but we usually like to order our go-to Thai options on our first time visit. I can't comment on the pad see ew, but I like how the server was kind and confirmed with us the amount of heat we wanted to eat. Lol, you know it's gonna be Asian spicy when they double check with you! Tom yum soup was not bad--tangy and a little pack of heat (sorry, I can't handle too much spice) and the pad thai was chewy and had a good amount of sauce and protein with each bite! I actually liked that it had an acidity compared to some other thai places I've tried where it's just too sweet. Portion size was just right! I'd definitely come back here again to try the other options :) We had so much fun chatting that I didn't get a chance to snap a photo of the interior, but trust me, it's really nice! Love this restaurant, and they use coconut milk instead of milk! I'm very picky about Thai food, and I don't like any of the Thai restaurants in the area, except Thai Station. Their green curry is my fave! My only recommendation to them is to provide a vegan Thai tea with oat milk or soy milk instead of dairy. Great ambience! read more

1-star downgrade due to the disappointing customer service by a server who went by "Mew" (according to receipt) and maybe the chef for the long wait. Took my mom to lunch here for the first time, and although we both enjoyed the food, we were seriously disappointed with Mew's customer service. She was unfriendly and not once did she offer to refill our glasses of water. When my mom asked for more water, she did not even ask me when my glass was almost empty. My wife and I had more professional servers in Thsi Station before. My family frequently orders from Thai Station for takeout but today I dined in for the first time in years with a friend. I always forget how fun it is to sit in the actual train cars and this was a perfect spot for a quiet weekday lunch. The service today was excellent and we throughly enjoyed our lunch - especially the super affordable lunch menu. First off, ambiance is so GOOD. It actually is right by the train tracks but is also composed of 2 train cars and a greenhouse-esque area in between the two. That alone is just so fun and good and exciting. We got to sit in one of the train cars which was fun and I'm glad we got to. Who doesn't love trains? Ordered the nam khao, tom yum soup and the khao soi. Normally we are drunken noodle/basil fried rice people but the offerings of the menu and the setting encouraged us to be adventurous. First off, I LOVE nam khao, it's just so good. This dish I knew I would love. It's got crispy rice, crispy pork, peanuts and just tastes so good, i just wish there wasn't ginger bits in it as I'm personally not a fan and it threw me off a bit. Also wish they gave us more lettuce so we could wrap it properly. I think that the nam khao at Yin Dee is somewhat better but this was still very good. 4/5 The tom yum was very rich and good. Great flavor but I wish it had much more lime to get more of that classic sour of tom yum. It just wasn't as classically tom yum as I was expecting but still good and comes with little fish cakes, meat, shrimp, noodles. Large portion size - as my mom would say, comes in a bowl big enough for you to wash your face in. 3.5/5 for flavor The last dish was the out of the blue one for us. Never heard of it, just thought the description sounded good. It's a curry like texture that is sort of sweet but also salty and spicy. It comes with both regular noodles and dried crispy egg noodles which was fun. The beef is very tender. I'm always afraid that meat will be chewy or fatty when I see big chunks but every piece was tender throughout. Also the portion was HUGE. It was definitely an interesting flavor I don't think I've ever encountered before, and I think it took multiple successive bites for the sweetness of the curry to grow on me as I'm someone who is strictly savory for my meals. Food 5 Stars Ambiance 4 Stars Service 3 Stars To be fair it was a Saturday night. We asked to be seated in one of the 2 train cars but that was not obliged even though 2 couples right after us were seated there - and that's part of the issues we had with service. We were the one table being served by a server in the dining car, not the main restaurant room so we were and felt like an afterthought. I still gave a 25% tip as it was a Saturday and I will give grace for that, however, I hope it's not always like this. We waited quite a while for drinks, appetizers, and entrees. My wife never got a knife she asked for. Also they had just 2 desserts and were out of all the others. Now to the food - it was fantastic. Best Thai I've had since moving to North Carolina. This would be a 5 star if not for the service issues. We will give them another shot next time we come to Cat's Cradle or to Chapel Hill and Carrboro but maybe not on a Saturday night. read more

They had no problem seating a big group of my coworkers despite not having a reservation, and upon entering we were charmed by the train theme and even got to see some trains go by our window. Every server we've had there has been so kind and helpful and they really seem to want everyone to enjoy their food. This is a super cute spot, quirky and fun looking. Diners sit mostly in old train cars. In theory I love this idea, but the acoustics are exactly what you might imagine in a long, metal tube. We were seated in a car with several young children, and the noise level was far from ideal. My initial impression of the service was not good. The server came back and forth to tell us the first three things we ordered were unavailable, including one of the specials. Mind you, she seemed unaware of this when we ordered. I heard a diner that came later try to order this same special. Only after he made his selection did she notify him of that. She was very sweet, but honestly not a good server. The food we did have was good. My husband had Massaman curry with duck. I finally settled on the seafood ramen, and it was among the best I've ever had. It's a very cute aesthetic and concept (and a perfect name to go with the theme) - but it's not overwhelming or over the top. Thai Station is definitely a new favorite for me! I pass this place often as it's right next to my office. They achieved a fun look on the exterior, transition to a calm and lovely interior. It's certainly eye catching. I was just here for a quick lunch in between meetings and yet I was taking pictures like I was on vacation. Inside there was a bit of a wait to be seated. I saw a sign familiar to our times - something like "please be patient, we are short staffed. Be kind to those that showed up." That's fine by me. The staff and service that I received was great! If memory serves, there are two train cars, an outside patio and a middle area in between the two cars. Every spot is decorated nicely. I am seated in a booth on a train car and I love it. The window looks out to a train track and I'm transported in my mind. The menu contains the usual, pad Thai, fried rice, delicious soups, and they also have specials. I go for cashew nut with beef. It came with a fresh small salad with a peanut dressing and some crispy puffs (sorry I don't know what they are called). The lunch entree was a good size, served with rice. It came fairly quickly, as I had prepared again to perhaps wait awhile. Pricing was very fair, I almost thought I got the wrong bill! My first experience at Thai Station was mixed. Our group of seven was seated at a table at the end of one of the train cars. Half of the group was seated against the wall, where there was a metal wall grate (likely original to the train car) that was so drafty it felt like an open window. As it was 27° out, we had to cover the grate with two jackets against the cold, and two people in our party ate with their coats on, their backs against a freezing surface. We had no choice but to stay at this table because there were no other tables for seven available. As appetizers, we ordered fried tofu and the fresh spring rolls without the chicken. The former was fine; the latter was full of greens without any shrimp to speak of. As my entrée, I ordered the massaman curry. Because it did not include any carrots, sweet potato, and/or green beans, as are typical for the dish, it was very monochrome: all tan with no other color. The onions were sliced into long, thin streamers, which made them difficult to eat, but the most profound element was a very strong taste of cinnamon. This was clearly intentional, as the dish came with two cinnamon sticks as a garnish. The curry sauce was very heavy and its overwhelming cinnamon taste made it difficult to find any other spice profiles or vegetable flavors. Other people in my party had better experiences than I did, and commented that they enjoyed the pad see ew and other noodle dishes. Our server was cheerful and carefully noted dietary restrictions in our party, including tree nut allergies and gluten intolerance, but he was also rather slow, mainly because he had no one helping him serve. He brought our seven entrees (each with a bowl of rice) to us one by one, without using a tray, down the long train car... How much faster it would have been if another server had accompanied him, bringing all the rice at once, enabling him to bring the entrees two or three at a time. I might give Thai Station another chance -- the prices are very reasonable, other reviews are good, parking is easy, and other dishes may be better than the one I chose -- but I'm not going to go racing back. read more

The location looks like a train station from the outside with two train cars on both sides. The interior is lovely with hanging faux flowering plants giving a peaceful serene atmosphere. The menus looked like well worn books with edges coming apart. We almost missed a few pages from the pages being thick. We ordered several appetizers and two entrees. All food was prepared well and flavorful and came beautifully presented. Service was excellent and attentive. One item I noticed we did not receive was the fried shrimp chips other reviews noted as complimentary with the complimentary salad we received. The salad was excellent the dressing was very flavorful and had a touch of heat. All the food had fresh flavors. The spring rolls were crisp and mushrooms come through as main ingredient. Crab rangoon rolls were crisp and creamy but tasted no crabmeat or scallions but still really good. Pork dumplings were cooked and served with a soy based sauce. Chicken stays were delicious and moist with a flavor packed sauce. The stir fried cashew nut meal the chicken was not fried crispy as described just sautéd in sauce with fresh peppers, onion and scallions. Rice was a bit sticky not fluffy but it was near the end of lunch. The Ba Mee Soup was a huge bowl of ramen noodles ( menu says egg noodles but not what we got) BBQ pork and shrimp and pork wontons in a chicken broth very flavorful. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The iced thai tea comes sweet with cream and tasted delicious as well. We will definitely be back and recommending giving them a try. read more

Came on a weekday night for dinner and there were 2 persons in my party. They have a private parking lot sharing with neighboring businesses, which is always a plus. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal: green curry with pork, fresh rolls, and moo ping. I have high expectations for Thai food since I lived there and really miss the authentic taste. This place came close to authenticity in taste as much as possible for where it's located. Green curry with pork comes with rice and you choose the spice level. I got it with medium spice level which was enjoyable. The moo ping had three skewers, wished only it was four when sharing with partner, and it was a bit salty but so flavorful. It came with the sauce that came I remember dipping in that came in a tiny plastic bag at the street market. The moo ping also comes with sticky rice that was steaming hot and fresh. Ever since moving to Chapel Hill, it's been tough finding a restaurant with the "WOW" factor until I decided to have dinner here on a Friday night. When I arrived, the line was out the door. The best I've had in a very long time. It tasted like vanilla ice cream. Drunken Noodles with Shrimp: When you can taste the age of the wok, you know it's good! The best drunken noodles I've had in the area. The sauce was a nice mix of sweet and sour. It's not like most places, where it's straight-up black soy sauce. Really flavorful food, but really slow service. It was a busy Friday night which contributed to the slow wait times, but they are also most definitely understaffed. There were only 3-4 waiters/waitresses running around and taking care of the whole restaurant. I felt bad for them because they couldn't catch a break. We waited at the front for around 20 mins and then got seated promptly. Overall, we waited an hour for our food to arrive. I was getting a little hangry and agitated, but knew it wasn't the waitress's fault. I got the green curry which was packed with spices and flavor! It was a reasonable spice level too. We were all impressed with Thai Station Restaurant in Carrboro. My parents are from Thailand and settled in North Carolina in the 1970s. My mom, who is well-traveled and has been to her fair share of Thai restaurants over the years, said the pad Thai she had here was the best pad Thai she's had in the States. High praise. Personally, I give Thai Station 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. The House Duck Noodle soup we ordered was too salty. We had to ask for extra broth to dilute the original broth. Other than that, everything was excellent, from the food to the service. Carrboro-Chapel Hill is lucky to have this place. Thai Station opened on February 17, 2020. They took over the space that once belonged to CrossTies Bistro & Beer Garden: https://bit.ly/3mcaQEB. Thai Station operated its dining room for only about a month before having to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, they persevered and made it through. The dining rooms are beautiful. The main dining room has an exposed slanted ceiling with slits for natural light to help fill the space. Decor includes handwoven basket light fixtures and hanging plants. The main dining room is surrounded by two train cars that have been repurposed into additional dining spaces. While not an uncommon concept, I always think it's kind of neat to eat in repurposed spaces like this. This is a great date spot. The restaurant also has two dedicated outdoor patios - one is covered and the other is not. We ordered from both the lunch menu and the regular menu. Thai Station offers their lunch menu six days a week. The restaurant is closed on Sunday. Here's what we got: * L4. Massaman Curry with Jasmine Rice, Chicken ($9) - mild tamarind curry, coconut milk, cumin, turmeric, onion, potato, and cashews * SL3. Papaya Salad ($7) - shredded papaya and carrot, string beans, tomato, peanuts, Thai chili-lime dressing, and crispy pork rinds * SL4. Pork Larb ($9) - spicy Thai ground pork salad, chili powder, roasted rice powder, red onion, cilantro, scallions, Asian greens, and Thai chili-lime dressing * N1. Pad Thai, Shrimp ($14) - "old-school" Thai-style sauce (sweet and sour taste), red onion, scallions, bean sprouts, egg, sweet pickle radish, and peanuts * NS4. House Duck Noodle ($15) - Thai street food, Thai spice mix broth, duck, bean sprouts, scallions, cilantro, Chinese broccoli, and roasted garlic * H2. Soft Shell Crab with Spicy Herb Dressing ($19) - green apple, red onion, scallions, cilantro, and cashews; this dish is customizable, more on that below * Thai Iced Tea ($3) Presentation was fantastic, all around. Every dish was plated beautifully. And this was not only in terms of the food arrangements, but in the dishware too. I believe some of the plates, unique in shape and style, came from Thailand. Massaman Curry is one of my favorite dishes to order at Thai restaurants. Thai Station's version was delicious. What set Thai Station's Massaman apart from the competition was its presentation with the curry in a small soup bowl/pot with a cinnamon stick in the middle. I thought the portion size was reasonable, but could have been bigger. I did order this one off the lunch menu, though. The curry was appetizingly rich, creamy, aromatic, and complex. The Papaya Salad and Pork Larb salads were fantastic. Both were fresh, tangy, and packed with flavor. Spicy too, but not too spicy. I believe you can adjust the spice level on any dish here. The Papaya Salad portions were generous. Chicken Larb was one of my favorite dishes growing up, one that my mom made for me a lot. We enjoyed Thai Station's pork rendition. They offer beef and chicken variations too. Most pad Thai served in the US is the Americanized/Westernized, sweet, orange-colored noodle version. Thai Station prepares theirs the "authentic" and traditional way. It's less sweet and more sour. My mom commented that she thinks Thai Station uses real peanuts instead of peanut butter, but I'm not sure what she meant by that. Bottom line is this pad Thai was terrific and different from most other pad Thai you'll find at Thai restaurants in America. To me, it didn't look nor taste as "artificial." As mentioned previously, the House Duck Noodle soup was salty, but when we diluted the broth, it was very good. The duck was roasted/charred and sliced into thin pieces. The noodles had yummy texture and the broth had good umami to it. This soup had all the little extras I like -- cilantro, scallions, and roasted garlic. It also came complete with crunchy, leafy, Chinese broccoli. The Soft Shell Crab with Spicy Herb Dressing came with two fried soft-shell crabs. Everyone liked it. By default, the crabs are served atop a sour green apple salad. However, you can have the crabs served with curry or other sauces like ginger sauce, basil sauce, or cashew sauce. Our first time in this restaurant and the decor definitely blew me away. The interior, and train seating areas are so cute, so if you're looking for a vibe, definitely check this place out. As for the food, I think the only good item was the complementary salad, chips, and drunken noodles. I'm not used to drunken noodles being this sweet, so I can't imagine how sweet their pad-see-ew is. I still thought the noodle texture was good and the highlight of the dish was definitely the fried tofu! I got mild and it wasn't spicy at all so I just asked for extra chili powder and it was perfect. The extra shrimp of $2 more came with 3 shrimps ... lol. The soups that we got were wayyyy too sweet. Definitely won't be ordering it again. The protein was fine and the broth was earthy, but the overly sweet broth was not enjoyable. I would still come back and try other non-noodle soup dishes. The ambiance of the restaurant is really cool. Set near train tracks, the theme of the restaurant is really cool. The interior is very pretty and has a little sub-section that leads into a smaller area that resembles a train cart. The drunken noodles were pretty average, nothing stood out to me. The Panang Curry on the other hand was fantastic. The creamy coconut curry and chicken were fantastic. +basil leaves! Other notes: The spice rating is rather conservative, the 2 spicy level is pretty subtle, so if you want an extra kick I would suggest asking for 3 spicy level. read more
