I love coming to eat at Golden china the food is usually good and service is great. Unfortunately my visit today was quiet disappointing, i ordered Hibachi Steak and the meat was undercooked! I spoke to the person in charge and let him know my meat was uncooked he gave me a dirty glance and told me that what did I wanted him to do? i said can u atleast make sure my meat is well-done? He told me he would give me another plate of steak (5pieces) bc i had already ate some. Which didnt matter to me since i had lost my appetite at that point. well it took 20 mins+ to get my plate of meat & when it did the meat was still uncooked!Now im home with vomit and diahrrea ! Placed a togo order via phone thinking it was 1.5 hours before closing. They let me know on the phone they were actually closing in 15 after placing my order. I ordered "buffalo" chicken wings, fried scallops, and a shrimp & broccoli w/ rice plate. Oh, and egg rolls. Raced there and made it on time. Once I entered the restaurant to pay, they let me know at that point that there were no scallops. I felt like a bully stole my lollipop. Even a little pissed, I just said ok. Just to keep it short, the wings were sweet & sour (dry as H under the sauce), the egg rolls were mushy, the plate was bland. The scallops were missing. It's a no-go for me and my family. read more

Leave it to me to find my nearest Chinese take-out joint in less than a week! (Hey, I still haven't had a chance to go grocery shopping.) Just as you'd expect, this place serves up all the China-American standards (Kung Pao, General Tso's, etc.); but they also have a whole menu dedicated to sushi. For the more daring perhaps... like Chris B, I decided this may not be the best kind of place to get fresh fish. Maybe I'll man up and try it one of these days. Instead, I went with a simple combination dinner to-go: General Tso's, extra spicy, with white rice instead of fried. It was ready in 10 minutes and I LOVE that they use aluminum containers instead of styrofoam -- i can recycle it, and it kept my food ultra-warm all the way home. When I popped the top, I was a little disappointed to see only two pieces of broccoli and three chili peppers (constituting "extra spicy"). But while they were skimpy on those items, they were not skimpy on the meat. It's more than enough for 3 meals -- and I'm a bigger eater! read more

This place is aight. 1) I like that it's not ultra-grimey inside and actually trying to be something of a sit-down restaurant, so if you wanted to eat in, you could do so without feeling like you're in a storage room. 2) The young lady (i.e., owner's daughter) who took my order was very cool and polite, so that was a refreshing plus, too. 3) I like that they actually have Eggplant with Hot Garlic Sauce on the menu--so few places offer this! BUT, when I want Eggplant with Hot Garlic Sauce, I want Eggplant with Hot Garlic Sauce. Not mixed vegetables with equal parts eggplant and green peppers/celery in hot garlic sauce. Bah humbug. What little eggplant there was should have been more tender, but the flavor of the dish was decent, and beggars can't be choosers so I guess I'll be going back. Fine for a fix. read more

I like Golden China for its variety. It does a lot of things, from traditional Chinese fare to Hibachi-style meals to sushi, fairly well. The only thing keeping it from five stars is that no one thing is done extremely well. Naturally, the best items on the menu are the traditional Chinese dishes. Favorites like General Tso's Chicken and the Sesame Chicken are good, but don't stand out too much from most restaurants of the like. The Hibachi dishes are a little different that what I'm used to - the chicken and steak are large, thin slices like you might find in Kung Pao chicken, and the vegetables are prepared in larger pieces than traditional Hibachi style. In spite of the differences in preparation, the quality and taste is solid. The ginger sauce is good and the seafood sauce is actually one of the highlights for me. As for sushi, it's actually some of the best I've had from a "multi-cuisine" place like Golden China. Usually the quality and preparation suffers in restaurants that don't place their focus on sushi. At Golden China, however, the ingredients are fresh and the rolls are flavorful. i do have to admit, though, I've only had a few of the simple rolls: spicy tuna, yellowtail, etc. Overall, Golden China provides a great variety of food at a great value. If you want great sushi, great Chinese, or great Japanese, this may not be the place to go. But if you want inexpensive, tasty semi-pan-Asian cuisine, I think you'll enjoy it as much as I do. read more

Okay, let me say that this is one of the better Chinese restaurants in the Raleigh-Durham area. I can tell that many of the dishes are prepared fresh, for example the won-tons are prepared there and seem to be from ingredients that are mixed together daily. The vegetables are fresh, and one of my favorite dishes here is General Tso's Chicken. It's spicy, but there's enough broccoli and onions to make you feel as if you had a somewhat healthy meal. The restaurant's real jewels are the side dishes, soups, won-tons, pot stickers, etc. They've been wonderful every time I've had something here. read more

This is the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Everything was extremely sweet or poorly seasoned. I got takeout and no sauces were included and the soup didn't include the fried wonton strips normally included with Chinese soup. Well I had really long day full activities and I saw a lot of good reviews on yelp so I tried Golden china. So I bought some beef and broccoli and General Tso chicken for dinner. Intially it tasted good, as I continued to eat the food started to taste like it had been sitting for a while (kinda stale). Solid Americanized Chinese joint. Probably deserves 3.5 stars from so, so I figure Yelpers will get the idea between my review and the other review. The better half and I generally are wary of sushi from "all-purpose" type restaurants so we can't comment here, but we've had a decent variety of the typical chinese-american dishes with few complaints. Our biggest issue was with the sweet and sour shrimp -- waayyy too much breading for each shrimp. read more

This is kind of sad. We used to get out here -a lot- many moons ago when they first opened, and we enjoyed some really wonderful meals. Then we moved out of the area and didn't make it back until some time in 2013. It was OK then. Nothing special, but not all that bad. We made it back today and I'm pretty sure this will be our last visit. The service was great. The lady who took care of us was lovely and attentive. I could have done without the TV tuned to the local news. Some low music would have been nice. I have grown to really dislike any restaurant that has a TV in it. It's distracting. Play some music in the background and let me connect with my dining partner. The steady stream of people coming in and leaving with take-out orders let in a blast of cold air that reached us all the way across the restaurant. I'm not sure what they could do to fix that, but it was not pleasant. My husband and I both had the Hot and Sour soup and it was delicious. Yum! My husband had the Hunan Beef without rice (he's one of those irritating "no carb" people) and says that it was "OK". I had the Beef and Broccoli WITH rice and it was not OK. The fried rice was awful. It was like Uncle Ben's Generic Perverted Cardboard Rice Flakes with Extra Nothing. The texture was terrible. The beef was acceptable. The broccoli was OK. I've been looking for a new place for carryout since my old standby, China Star, has become such a great disappointment. For now, Golden China will suffice. They are prompt and orders are always correct. I've only ordered the General Tso's chicken and it meets my needs. The spring rolls however are very greasy, they even include some napkins to soak up some of the grease. For the first time, I decided to ordered the fried chicken wings at an Asian carryout. Bad mistake. The wings had been fried in the same oil as all of the other Asian fried products and not only took on that taste but didn't seem to have any seasoning (i.e., salt and pepper at the minimum). read more

Had lunch at this imposter restaurant with a friend. They charge 15% gratuity whether you get good or bad service. The old Chinese lady need to be at home chilling. She doesn't need to be serving tables. The food has gone from decent to shit. I express my concerns, but hey they got me for the last time. Made a $20 donation to Golden China. I have been reminded again chinese food here in Durham continue to suck. I sure miss the west coast Asian food. @#$%^@! damn this place is a rip off. Like every great American, one of my top priorities upon moving to a new location is finding a local go-to Chinese take out spot. Thank you, Golden China, for admirably fulfilling that role the past 1.5 years! Conveniently located near Costco and Kroger, Golden China offers up well-prepared traditional Chinese dishes in sizable portions at a price that is just right. As others have noted, they also boast quite the extensive sushi menu as well as some hibachi offerings. I haven't indulged in either of those, but rather have stuck with the tried and true! I'm a big fan of their vegetable soup for starters as the broth is flavorful and not too salty while packed with tons of big broccoli florets, carrots, baby corn, and peppers. Yum. That soup hits the spot in the winter. As for main dishes, I like the chicken with bean curd, moo goo gai pan, general tso's, or kung pao chicken when I'm going for something fowl inspired. The general tso's really stands out in terms of taste, while the chicken with bean curd always offers up generous portions of both chicken and tofu (bean curd). When looking to munch down veggie style, I'll usually opt for the veggie chow mein, mixed Chinese vegetables, or bean curd (usually Szechuan style). I honestly have never been disappointed with a dish that I've ordered here. The food probably is not going to knock your socks off, but it's more than solid and always leaves me with a happy little food baby in my belly. Other positive notes include their killer lunch specials which are offered everyday ($5.35 for a main dish, white or pork fried rice, and a soup or egg roll), and the fact that they'll happily prepare any dish in the sauce that you request. Lastly, you cannot beat this place in terms of staff friendliness. The mom and daughter (or at least I assume that's the relation) that jointly run the cash register are simply awesome. I ordered the egg drop soup and crab rangoons. The soup was good and the noodles fresh. The crab Rangoon filling was too sweet. It was super ridiculously sweet once I dipped it in the sweet n sour sauce. I was going to order Combination plate, but it was pork heavy. I asked if I could switch the pork fried rice to chicken and it was an extra $1. I asked to switch the egg roll to shrimp and it was an extra $.50. I just think that's too much when on the menu chicken and pork fried rice cost the same. Why should I have to pay an extra $1 for the portion that's a side on a plate of food?? The egg is only a $.25 difference on the menu, but she was quick to say $.50. This seems greedy when the prices aren't reflective of the menu. It's 2020 and a lot of people don't eat pork. They don't offer you money back when you don't get any meat. I would've given them 3 stars, but I felt like she was trying to rip me off. read more

Our favorite go-to Chinese place! Have been coming here for years, and have never once had an issue of any kind (rare to be able to say that). The food is always hot and exactly the way you ordered it, and the service is friendly and prompt. We have done take out as well as dine in, and the results are always consistent. I will also put a special word in for the people that own/manage the place- they seem family oriented, and are always super professional and polite. It makes us want to go back and spend our money there, the kind of business that you feel good about supporting. Which made it worse when we went in for dinner tonight and saw a truly heinous customer being an awful human being to the people that worked there, which was so undeserved. If you have an issue with something at a restaurant, you can make a complaint in a reasonable manner without going full-out psycho on them. I wish I could give the workers there an extra star for "dealing with a*hole customers well." read more

My first visit to Golden China was during one of the worst snow storms we've had this past winter. I was house crazy from being cooped up and decided to make a trek out to Kroger. I remembered seeing Golden China many times before and hoped they would be open. Luckily they were! They offer dine in or take out service. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and feels very familial. My husband and I grabbed an available booth and ordered hot tea, vegetarian egg rolls, vegetable lo mein, and vegetable fried rice. The eggrolls were tasty and perfectly cooked. We liked the lo mein and thought the fried rice was okay, soy sauce improved the flavor. I returned to Golden China more recently and got lo mein again for take out; my food was ready within about 7 minutes and hot and fresh. Over all good take out, but I'm loyal to Dragon Express for their General Tso's tofu. read more

As a regular customer, my son ordered from Golden China tonight. He asked for his usual sesame chicken "dinner" but received the sesame chicken "chef special" (as listed on the menu). I was in the car so he called me and asked me to come in because what he was given was not his regular order. (Plus he was charged $9.95 plus tax instead of $.7.95 plus tax.) When I went in I inquired about the cost and review the menu. The lady who took our order argued about asking for the meal correctly instead of saying "dinner" say COMBINATION DINNER! she said. I explained that we used their menu when we called in and simply read off of their menu. She continued to scold my son about how say what he wanted correctly when he orders. I suggested to her if she was that concerned about how someone orders off of a menu, perhaps they should change the wording on the menu. We we re-ordered the correct meal he wanted and when she gave us our change back it was a dollar short. I explained to her the mistake and she writes it out on paper and shows me her math (which was done incorrectly). I explained to her that was incorrect because her math problem was off by $1.00 as well. She proceed to argue with me that she is correct. Sooooo, I take out my calculator and do the math for her THREE times....showing her each time that my answer is showing something different (my answers were consistent as well). So she says to me "My brain works and the change she gave me is right" by now I'm fed up and more than offended....so I take a pen and I ALSO write out the math problem and show her how to re-group using subtraction...and once again it shows she gave me in The INCORRECT change. She stops reviews her problem ....opens the cash register and pulls out a dollar, laid it on the counter (one of my pet peeves) and walks away. I said thank you ....ho reply.....I said good night....no reply....I say good night again louder of course and she responds. I decided to call back to tell them my disappointment with the customer service, their rudeness as well as lack of professionalism. Whoever I spoke to (which could have been her, because I spoke to more than one person) pretended to be concerned but nonchalant at the same time. NO APOLOGY was given. I called back to let them know that I will do an online review and I felt I was owed an apology. The first lady who acted like she wasn't sure what an apology was said I'm sorry right? The second lady who came to the phone LAUGHS and said an apology...."I'm sorry...that make you happy?" I told her that I DID NOT think it was funny and it was unprofessional. And I told her the next time she tells a customer that her brain works to make sure she adds her numbers correctly. i AM EXTREMELY disappointed in that employee!!!!!! I'll admit it, I'm a little biased, because Golden China is "my" Chinese place. I've been going there since 2001 (I think!)...and I'm kind of invested in their success. Where else will I get my Singapore Mei Fun? My personal bias aside, I've found that friends and family tend to return with a similar fervor. They offer a SUPER-affordable lunch combination (entree, rice, and soup/eggroll for less than $6), but I find I end up getting takeout for dinner rather frequently. Their soups are delicious, expect little extras (seaweed in the miso, kohlrabi in the hot & sour). All of their veggies are crisp and fresh-tasting (if you're not sure what kind of vegetables are included, just ask). Portions are generous. They also offer Hibachi selections, which are very light on seasoning (as is typical in Japan), letting the natural flavors of the food shine through. (My Mom is addicted.) I agree that the decor is a typical strip-mall (and a little tired), but I go for the food--which I always enjoy. read more

Made a stop here during a road trip from DC to NC. Read the reviews and decided to try it. I really enjoyed it. We got pork fried rice and Shrimp w/ Broccoli. Fried rice could have used more pork and the shrimp w/ broccoli could have used a tad more flavor. However, the shrimp were very large and plentiful. Overall we were pleased. Everytime I come here I'm always greeted with a friendly smile and warm welcome. I've never taken out from here. I always eat inside and the food is amazing. You get very large portions for the price that you pay. There are two televisions mounted on the walls. The decor is nice. The place is CLEAN and QUIET. I have eaten here for several years and always enjoyed the food and service. Until this evening it was my favorite Chinese restaurant. We went in and ordered the poo poo for two to take home. When we got home we started eating a few bites from the items from the container. The chicken was not fresh, the rice was not good and seemed to have been cooked and sitting all day. The toast shrimp was greasy and did not taste very good. We never tried any other meat which was very slim looking and dried up. I called and was told I could bring back the order and they would refund my money or cook me something else. I drove back over with almost all but a few bites of food and they gave me my refund. It was poor service in terms of the cooking of the food. They never should have served the food. it seems they are going down hill in terms of customer service. I've decided to not have that experience again. read more
