Good, reliable American Chinese takeout. Excellent wonton soup (a quart gives you 10 wontons, which is generous and most appreciated). I had gallons of this while I was down with COVID in January and I think it sped my recovery. I tend to get pork or beef dishes here because their chicken has an odd texture -- much too soft. I think they over-velvet their chicken (a technique used to tenderize meat that uses either egg white or a small ampount of baking soda). But the roast pork is great. My go-to selections: Wonton soup Yat gaw mein soup Steamed dumplings (thick wrapper with good texture, juicy pork, and the best dipping sauce anywhere) Egg foo young Moo shu pork -- better than most in a sweetish brown sauce. Excellent pancakes Roast pork mei fun Roast pork with mixed vegetables No one should expect gourmet food from a neighborhood takeout joint. This isn't G58. I have tried a few Chinese takeout places since moving to the area and haven't found one I like until now. Came in after long day at work and the older couple behind the counter was so sweet. It's an open kitchen so I actually watched him cook our food in the wok over the fire. There were actual pieces of orange peel in the chicken. I love mom & pops Chinese restaurants. It could either be a hit or a miss. This one was a special hit! I was quite impressed! I was craving simple Chinese takeout and this place did the trick. I ordered some shrimp and broccoli, which came with a side of white rice. The portion didn't seem a lot at first but once I poured it on my plate, WOW! Shrimp & Broccoli - The sauce complimented it just the way I like it. There was just enough sauce to give it a kick. The shrimps were huge! Most places cheap put on the shrimp. The broccoli also had a nice bite and crunch to it. Dumplings: Must have! Not your typical dumplings. Super flavorful with a nice texture to the wrapper. I recently moved to NC from out of state, so I'm always on the lookout for good food. Someone I met told me this place had such good Chinese food. I'm here to say it does NOT. I went for the first time tonight, and this is how it went: We arrived at almost 7pm, there was no one inside, but right as we ordered, a line began to form. We placed our order and waited. After 10 more people came in and ordered, it was crowded, so I thought, "This place must be good!" The food is not good. Customer service was terrible as well. We watched the person who took orders, cooked with one other person, then bag food, and gave it to people who walked in and ordered more than 20 minutes after us. Unacceptable! These were not call-in orders. I asked if our food was ready, and she said yes and handed someone else their food. We waited almost an hour to receive our food after watching several people walk in, order, pay, and then receive their food. Our order was relatively small. Terrible service. (Strike 1) After we finally received our food, we drove home to eat our broccoli and beef, chicken fried rice, and a few other items. The rice was not good, and I'm not accustomed to yellow rice as fried rice. (Strike 2) Finally, the beef was pink in some spots inside, and some parts of the chicken inside the chicken fried rice were raw ( Strike 3) I don't know if this was because they rushed and were overwhelmed by the influx of people - but this was the worst I've had in years. I'm very disappointed in how we were treated and how the food was served. Now, there were only 2 people on staff, so obviously, they need help, but this was a first-time experience that will never be repeated. I only gave 2 stars because the fried chicken wings were cooked, and the crab ragoon was mediocre. Otherwise, it would be a '0' We did not like it, and this place was packed. So now I think people don't know that there are indeed much better options, and they simply must be accustomed to this place. But never again. Tl;dr: Tasty American-Chinese food and hardworking staff. BE NICE TO THE STAFF. Also: GREAT CRISPY WINGS Visited on a Sunday and expected a wait because they were not answering their phone, and by the time I got there, the line was about three customers deep. The worker at the front spoke English well, but some of the customers had a hard time understanding her, so they marked their order down on the paper menus that they had at the front. This is a very clever way to avoid miscommunications, however the customer seemed annoyed at it. By the time I got to the front, I had decided. We ordered the pineapple chicken, veggie lo mein, egg drop soup, and chicken wings. The worker was very nice and helped me answer some other things I had questions about such as: "Is the szechuan chicken crispy?" to which she answered that it is not. The order took about 30 minutes to come out, which seemed to upset some customers who probably weren't expecting it to be busy (give them a break, please, you're deciding to order out food on a weekend night). The pineapple chicken was a breaded a fried boneless chicken dish, tossed in a rich and sweet gravy seasoned with a veggie mix and pineapples. This is a good very mild alternative to their sweet and sour chicken or any of its variations. The veggie lo mein was great. Tender noodles stir fried with chow mein sauce and vegetables. The vegetables were a standard mix, but its flavor was good, and it came piping hot. The egg drop soup was mildly flavorful, with a lot of egg ribbons in it, but was way too thick. Some restaurants prefer to serve a very thick egg drop soup, but I think there was too much cornstarch slurry in this one. I have a secret: My favorite place to get chicken wings are at chinese takeout places. They do a fantastic job with seasoning and tenderizing their chicken so that when it's fried, the batter is crispy while the insides are tender and fall off the bone. This place did it well. There's a reason why a lot of people had chicken wings in their order here. Visit here if you're craving Chinese takeout food, get their wings, and be nice to the staff. read more

The food is good with some dishes & some I would not order again from here. We ordered BBQ Spareribs; these were good but needed to cook more for more tenderness. Small batch of fries (had a taste for some crinkle cuts), good not burnt in taste or appearance, the Chicken Mei Fun, I would not ever order here again, very bland looking & taste wise as well, the chicken in it is questionable with texture & taste, same with Chicken Egg Foo Young (for some reason I thought it might be better than the roast pork egg foo young). Slow as molasses. Will not give you any estimate for pick up that is reliable. Not sure what happened. They were reliable with pick up time and also much quicker with prep. One thing is, phone orders I noticed will be finished once you are in store and anyone placing order in person will get their food prepped ahead of phone orders. Food quality is still the same and amount is still reasonable. We usually get lunch special to save money and a large soup - which is plenty for two meals for two adults. The chicken in the general tso was overly fried, which makes me think it was pre fried and just reheated over and over again. Was a bad experience for this type of food. They need to really focus on more their customers, time management, and quality control. Really ws hopeful after seeing some reviews, but in the end, the food did not live up to expectation. Yummy, yummy, in my tummy!! I was having a craving for Chinese and my usual place isn't open for lunch on Saturday (Say, what?!) so I started looking on Yelp. I wanted to stay relatively close to home on this rainy day and saw consistently good ratings for Hong Kong, so we headed over. Egg foo young is pretty hard to find in the Triangle and I was happy to see it on the menu so I gave it a try. Wow, very pleasantly surprised and for $5.25 it was a steal! Two good sized patties come in the lunch portion with pork fried rice. Pork or chicken are the choices at lunch so I went all in on the piggy! The patty is fried perfectly with just enough crisp on both sides. Lots of pork, onions, and veggies on the inside too. It comes with gravy on the side to add on as much as you want. It was really good! I'd love to try it with shrimp next time. My gold standard on egg foo young was from a place that doesn't exist anymore, Charlie's Chinese in Chapel Hill, but this was definitely one for the running. It's mainly take out, but there are a few tables to eat in. Just order at the counter and wait to be called. When ordering off the regular menu orders come in pint and quart size, which is something I don't see around here much either. They have combination dinner options too. This is probably my favorite go to for standard American Chinese. The portions are always decent as are their prices. We pretty much always get the same thing, but we've never had anything we didn't like. Their soups are always tasty, albeit a little on the thicker side. They're generous with their sauces. Everything comes out crispy. The rice is never soggy. And they deal with my ridiculous requests to only include certain vegetables in any of my dishes regardless of what it's supposed to come with. Are they the best Chinese food ever? Having eaten my weight in authentic Chinese food in DC's China Town, I can say with certainty, absolutely not. But for 2 lunch combos including fried rice and egg rolls, as well as 2 soups and 2 sodas for $25 (including a $2 tip), you really can't beat it. read more

You know how Chinese restaurants often have those backlit photographs of dishes above the counter? Well in my boredom, waiting for my food, I began to notice that each of the photographs included a single red rose lying on the table. Take a moment and take it in people: red roses and Chinese takeout. It boggles the mind. I'd just as soon expect bottles of champagne or chocolate truffles to be on the counter beside the duck sauce. But I digress. I'm not really complaining about the wait; actually, I thought it was pretty great they were fixing my food up fresh instead of scooping it from a vat of prepared beef & broccoli. This is a below average Chinese American food place. My husband and I got two lunch combos which consisted of one dish and your choice of fried or steamed rice. The beef and broccoli was ok and the General Tso's was a little on the soggy side and barely spicy. Also, the people working here seemed extremely unhappy, which never makes a good impression. The "pork fried rice" was weird. It was yellow and had bits of onion, but nothing else.. not a single piece of pork. If you try really hard you can taste a little bit of that wok flavor, but that might even be a bit of a stretch. The worst part about moving is that you have to find a new Chinese takeout place. My favorite place when I lived in Carrboro was also called Hong Kong, so I took this as a sign from the gods and decided to give the Durham Hong Kong a go. I don't claim to know anything about authentic Chinese food, but this is definitely authentic American Chinese food -- the kind that I so sorely missed while in Europe. $7.25 for the sesame chicken combo, which comes with rice and an egg roll. The combo was an average size and pretty tasty, and I can be pretty picky about sesame chicken. This one was a little different, with just a touch of spice, but very much like the sesame chicken I've eaten at most Chinese places. My friends also enjoyed their General Tso's chicken, egg drop soup and steamed dumplings. The only thing I had to complain about was the time it took for the order to be ready. This is my go-to neighborhood Chinese restaurant. It's pretty simple - Woodcroft strip mall location, very small eat-in area. It just is what it is - a really good takeout place. I don't know that you'll find any real surprises on the menu, but they have everything you need. We've never had a bad order. The price was $4.95 and it was more food than I could possibly eat. So, this all sounds good, so why the two stars? Well, my friends quantity does not equal quality. If you want something to fill your gullet, you will enjoy Hong Kong. If you are looking for tasty Chinese, try someplace else. The chicken had a "squishy" consistency, which as a rule, is never a good thing for chicken. The sauce wasn't saucy enough (or flavorful enough either) - it was very thin.
