Finally a place with good Kung pao chicken AND good hot and sour soup! I've been making my way through local Chinese restaurants using these two items as a baseline and other than Szechuan Village (which is a bit of a trek) this is by far the winner! Plus that it's under $20 and takes less than 10 minutes. Will definitely be back next time I have a craving for Kung pao! read more

Kung Pao chicken without cashews is a joke! Went here for a quick lunch because it seems to be the only acceptable (and fast) place to eat in Carrboro Plaza. NC people would know that there's always a Chinese fast food place like this close to a Food Lion, and this is one of the many, so my expectations were not big. I ordered the Combination meal with Kung Pao Chicken, pork fried rice, and egg roll. Also ordered a small hot & sour soup & a bottle of diet Coke. Young lady cashier was friendly and took order without issue. I usually order take out when it comes to Wok spots like this but decided to dine in. Order was served within 10 minutes - another employee brought my soup with the flour crackers that go with the soup. As you can see in the photo, the size of Kung Pao meal is fine for a $12+ meal. The mixture of vegetables (broccoli, carrots, snow peas, and green bell peppers) bury some of the chicken pieces underneath, giving me an impression that chicken meat was not enough. As I ate, I discovered that there's a fair amount of thin sliced chicken breasts. Most of the chicken pieces (maybe 5 or 6) were sliced thin but wide - I wanted to slice it to make it fit the spoon with the pork fried rice, which was finely cooked. Somewhat surprisingly, the chicken tasted tofu-like rather than what you'd expect from a well-cooked white meat chicken. I set the few snow peas aside - they don't go well with the entire meal. I realized something seemed to be missing. Any Kung Pao chicken lover would know that the perfect Kung Pao chicken always have cashews (or roasted peanuts) but China Wok's version was missing this essential ingredient that gives that extra crunch to the meal. The space inside is about average compared to other Chinese Wok spots in NC. There's a good amount of parking space shared between various businesses there. There's a standard soda machine and sweet tea but got a Diet Coke bottle instead. The hot & sour soup was the same as what you'd expect from a typical Chinese restaurant. Amount was good for a small size. The eggroll was quite bland: Although there were bits of pork inside, the chewy, flavorless texture made me ask, "What in the world am I eating?" Also tried their General Tso in a previous visit, and the chicken meat quality was a bit better that the Kung Pap chicken but tasted like it was more flour than chicken. If you want fast and cheap Chinese food in Carrboro, China Wok is still a convenient option. Although there are a few other Chinese spots nearby (more towards the downtown area), it's still a blessing for a boring shopping center. But if you're looking for a decent Chinese restaurant that serves quality food, this is clearly not it. read more

I really was SO excited about eating here as it's been a few months. I was so disappointed when I got home to see the chicken wings were OLD! like they refried old wings. It was TERRIBLE. the shrimp fried rice was crunchy. I really didn't want to write a review but it seems like they just DID NOT CARE. 3 orders of chicken wings and shrimp fried rice, $30 down the drain. Was in the area for work and had a hankering for some Chinese, so I took to the pages of Yelp to find a good place to go and ended up at the China Wok. The ordering process was simple and done completely online. When I picked up the food, it was steaming hot and smelled incredible. Upon cooling down, I enjoyed the spicy Hunan Chicken entree that was cooked beautifully. Lots of chicken and the veggie medley was soft with a subtle crispness. The egg roll was full of shrimp in every bite and flaky and crunchy on the outside. It's a simple dish, but trust me that people can mess it up real bad, but China Wok is not one of them. This is seriously the worst food, Chinese or otherwise, that I have ever had. It was so bad I think I need to bump up any other one star review I've ever done to a two to compensate. I tried three dishes here and only one was edible, not good, but not completely gross. Their sesame chicken is chewy bits of overly sweet congealed tough meat bits that is pretty much like several other of their dishes but they put sesame seeds on it to make it "sesame chicken". It was hard as rocks and basically a bizarre orange sauce with sesame seeds. The Mapo tofu was even worse with extremely slimy tofu that you couldn't even pick up without it sliming out and disintegrating. Mapo is supposed to be spicy this was just a salty soy sauce on top. The vegetables looked like they were a birds eye frozen mixed veggie bag, heck maybe not even a brand name. The Lo mein was better but noodles are pretty hard to mess up. With that said, they were still below average and not worth the price. read more

Surprisingly good. I only say that because there is a shortage of really good Chinese food in the area. Stuck with standards like kung pao chicken, which had ample amounts of fresh veggies and mu shu pork that was equally good. The sweet and sour pork (son's choice) a little disappointing in that it was a carton of battered fried pieces of pork, with sweet and sour sauce on the side, minus the pineapple or peppers. They also gave us 3 cartons of rice, which was way more than what we had requested. We ordered on line and food was ready pretty quickly for pick up. Next time will venture towards the house specials, and really see how they stand up. read more

Strip mall Chinese place located in the Timberlyne Shopping Center. I usually stop by to place a carryout order before running into Food Lion next door and it's always ready when I return 15 minutes later. Service is efficient and I've never had an order that was messed up. I've only ever ordered a small fried rice plus an appetizer or two, so I can't comment on most of the menu. However, everything I've ever had from China Wok is tasty (although not really healthy) and the portion sizes are generous. We especially enjoyed the Beef and Broccoli, Sesame Chicken, and Chicken Lo Mein. Has to be the very worst Chinese food in all of North Carolina!! We ordered 3 different dishes. None of them tasted like Chinese food. The chicken fried rice was yellow rice with slivers of chicken thrown in. The shrimp fried rice was yellow rice with a few shrimp thrown in. I ordered the garlic vegetables and added tofu, and you know what, it was good. In most other towns, this would be an unremarkable praise. However, we are in Carrboro/Chapel Hill, which has an unreasonable amount of terrible Thai/Chinese/Asian cuisine. The food was hot, fresh, and not overly oily. The portions were generous, the price was low. I really don't think there's much more you can ask for from a place that'll serve you lunch for under $6. This place is infinitely better than Jade Palace, Spicy 9 (which is the worst, the literal worst), Akai Hana, or the perennially overrated Gourmet Kingdom. Gourmet Kingdom basically flavors everything with soy sauce and/or toasted sesame oil. It's also overpriced and the service is less than unremarkable. I've tried every Asian restaurant in the area multiple times in the past few years and am usually disappointed. The fact that this place exceeded my expectations is truly remarkable. I'm not sure what the issue was with the bad reviews on this place. Perhaps it was the items they ordered, or the kitchen had a new cook, etc. But I will tell you that this place is worth it--it's not outstanding cuisine, but it is actually worth your money and you will be satisfied, and maybe you will even be impressed. I don't have high expectations for a shopping center chinese food establshment. I'm not jaded, just realistic. I mean, you pay $6.99 for some General Tso's you have to realize you're not getting the freshest or best ingredients. It's fine, I'm o.k. with that. The impatient mono-syllabic grunt was the only indication I got that my request for food had been received and I should slide my card. Now, I realize that there's probably a language barrier (all you PC types out there, settle down, I was there - you weren't - you'll just have to trust me on this). However, communication is primarily non-verbal and those non-verbal cues said tons. So, let's review: 1. Food? About what you'd expect. Standard shopping center chinese food. I'm a fan or I wouldn t be there. 'Nuff said. 2. Attitude/Customer Service? Abysmal. A welcome to your business, thank you, come again, will that be all, etc. . . how hard is that? Y'all this was bad. Like, if you respect yourself, you may not feel well after the feelings this food makes you feel. I mean, yeah the general tso's chicken and fried rice all tasted fine (I guess??). It's just the "chicken" was maybe almost non-existent. There may have been a particle of chicken deep fried in so much batter that I could hardly tell. So it tasted like good junk food that was kind of addicting. I LOVE China Wok. I literally have them listed under 'favorites' in my phone. I also live very close so they are convenient for take-out. I recommend take-out over eating in; the place is very small and staff can be brusque. I always call my order in and they are always ready within the quoted 10-15 minutes. This is the epitome of cheap, greasy, Americanized Chinese take-out. None of this is authentic and it's all fast and fried. You cannot expect gourmet cuisine from a place like this; only that the food is fried and delicious (does anyone still think that take-out Chinese is authentic??) The prices here are the best I've seen in the area, and in my opinion the overall quality stands up to Jade Palace or Hunam (also not authentic places). The combination plates come with a good amount of food at a cheap price. The crab rangoons, chicken wings, and hot and sour soup are the best here over other take-out places. The chicken dishes have a little too much breading, and some of their dishes can be a tad bland. But I think overall it delivers: it's cheap, it's fast, and it tastes good. I am sitting here with the takeout box in front of me - and I felt compelled to stop what I was doing and write a review of this place. I have been here probably 50 times. I'm not kidding - and only - only because it's down the street from work and has a 99 health rating. That alone has gotten my business. And that's the whole point - I go there for the wrong reasons. There's no other Chinese place in a five mile radius that is both 1) above a 2 star rating and 2) clean. None. So I got to China Wok and am disappointed every.single.time. The people that work there are lovely and they do a smashing job of keeping things tidy - but the food has got to be the most insipid version of Americanized Chinese food I have ever had. I have literally gotten more flavor from Asian food at a mall food court than this place. It is as if they are terrified that if they actually add more than a smidgen of garlic or ginger to one of their dishes, we southern-fried Americans will run screaming from the restaurant, "Too much flavor! Too intense!" Yes, I recognize that this is Americanized Chinese - still, no excuse. Americanized Chinese can be damned tasty in a comfort food sort of way. This - no. Purely strip mall Chinese food. Actually, usually substandard strip mall Chinese food. But if it's on your way home (as it is for me) here are my tips. Try the Black Pepper Chicken. Small strips of chicken stir fried with veggies and lots of pepper. It has nice heat, good flavor, and lots of veggies (but is a little greasy). The Chinese Chicken Wings are also pretty good. The young lady, Sophia (if I recall correctly), at the counter was friendly and had great recommendations for me. I tried the Singapore Rice Noodles and was impressed. Seriously the worst Chinese food I've ever had, and that's saying a lot considering I ate street food in China for two months straight. I got the Chicken with Cashew Nuts lunch special to go about 1pm. The dining room was pretty empty and the cook staff looked bored in the kitchen. The lady at the front took my order and it took about five minutes to finish. On the drive back home with my food, I could tell from the slightly-burnt smell that I was in for an unpleasant experience. The chicken seemed to be all dark meat and was either extremely overcooked or some sad attempt at flash frying. I ended up picking out the vegetables and eating the white rice, as the chicken was inedible. I don't plan on going back. read more
