I ordered Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, Pineapple fried rice, panang curry, and egg rolls. IT. WAS. AWFUL. Truly the worst Thai food I've EVER had! The egg rolls were limp and chewy; the wrappers were not browned and the rolls were not remotely crispy! Every single entree tasted as if FLOUR had been added to it. Even the rice I tried everything again later, thinking it might be tastier as leftovers. Nope. I ended up throwing it ALL away. We were so happy to come back to Thai Spoon after the pandemic. The menu has increased with many new options and the food was even better than before. We were quite comfortable sitting inside with spaces between the booths. Our meal was fantastic from appetizer to dessert. The mango sticky rice is perfect. Among some of the best Thai I've had in the states...or maybe just seems that way because it blows most places in the Triangle out of the water. I had the chicken mung bean pad Thai. It's definitely Americanized a bit but the cook is very good and the flavors are fantastic. They had a crab Rangoon that has large pieces of crab and cream cheese and a thin crispy wrapping that is to die for. Obviously this is not quite Thai but the flavor is so good I always end up buying an order. The Thai iced tea is perfect too - sweet but not in a sickening way and balanced nicely with the sweetened condensed milk. I spent a couple of months in Thailand and have pretty high standards -- while not totally authentic and is made for western tastes still delicious! Highly recommend! read more

"New Thai restaurant in North Durham shopping center on Guess" I'm a big fan of Pad Thai on Guess Rd in Durham, so I came with some eagerness but skepticism for lunch at this new option, in the Food Lion shopping Center by Horton on Guess Rd. I ordered the spicy eggplant chicken lunch special ($7.99). It comes with either a soup or salad, but I paid an extra bit to just get both soup AND salad. Venue: It is a "hole in the wall" in a shopping center, so not fine-dining but certainly clean and welcoming. The restaurant was COMPLETELY empty (aside from the one nice staff member) the entire time my friend and I ate there, noon to 1pm on a Thursday. Decor was simple but fine, and bench seats were comfortable. Food quality: EXCELLENT. The restaurant Pad Thai down the street gives a basic broth soup with their lunch entrees, but in contrast, this was a delicious spicy chicken coconut soup (much better). I LOVED my entree, too-- good quality chicken, big chunks for eggplant, and good other vegetables. My dining partner loved his beef salad dish. I will say that the side-salad was unimpressive-- the ginger dressing was nice, but it was mostly that on iceberg lettuce. I definitely encourage diners to get the soup. Quantity/ value: Pretty good for $8. It was not so much food that I imagine anyone taking home leftovers, but it was a satisfying amount, and that's a very fair price for a quality lunch. I will note that the dinner menu prices appear higher than Pad Thai, but as I did not come for dinner, I cannot comment on the value. Service: Our hostess was very friendly and answered our questions quickly. She checked on us repeatedly and offered refills whenever we were near finishing. Food came out pretty fast, too. I will reiterate that the restaurant was literally completely empty, but this was all still very good. This place is fantastic, it's all about the food! As someone who appreciates the cuisines of many countries, I was sad to find such a limited selection of Thai food in Durham. This place, opened in February apparently, has solved this problem. While it is clear that they are still working out issues with service (short handed, did not bring plates for me and a guest to split an appetizer, water glass empty for some time, etc) they have incredible food. The main problem I had was that the seat bench is too fat back from the edge of the table. I ended up braced so that I would not slip off the bench onto the floor. Other than that, the food was not what I had anticipated; it was better than what I expected both in quality, quantity and flavor. Next time I will know to order less. Let me start of by saying the food itself was quite tasty. But our experience getting to that point was disappointing. We tried twice. Our first visit was not what we'd hoped for. The wait staff was... well, let's just say this is probably not the profession he needs to be in. One of our dishes was missing ingredients. And I had to flag the server down to get the rice we were supposed to have. And then we only got it for one of the two dishes. In the end, we left without even ordering desert, which I love at Thai restaurants. Because the place was so highly recommended by folks, we gave it a second try. Service was still abysmal. And this time our meal took forever to show up, in spite of the restaurant being very slow (only 4 or 5 tables filled total). And again missing ingredients. Weirdly, it was the same dish they'd messed up before, but different ingredients. The whole experience was so disappointing we again left without desert, even just getting our dishes to go because we'd already been there over an hour. So we're done. There are too many excellent Thai places in the area. None quite so close to home, but better service and more pleasant overall. Like I said, the food itself was excellent, in spite of the snafus. Perhaps they'll correct whatever the deal is with their service. Let me know if they do, and maybe we'll give them another chance. read more

Not bad for Thai in Durham. I went because it had the best rating on Yelp. I showed up on a Friday night around 9pmand the restaurant was basically empty. I was seated quickly started off with the fried calamari. It's cooked in a slightly sweet breading and served with a sweet and sour sauce. Almost tasted like a dessert. Not bad, not great-but edible. For the entree I went with the Chicken Red Curry. The portion was generous but I had to ask for another serving of rice to keep the consistency of the curry just right. I ordered it very spicy and it did not disappoint! My friend ordered the Pad Thai. It was okay, average at best. Not a bad spot for a quick Thai food meal with average quality. read more

This one defied expectations at every turn for me. Since its right across the street, let me contrast it with Dragon Inn. Dragon Inn is one of my favorite Chinese places in the area. The atmosphere is mediocre, the staff (while nice) isn't particularly engaging, and while the food is great, things like dessert and alcohol seem like distant afterthoughts. Thai Spoon could be more the opposite. My lunch was billed as "spicy" and it was anything but. The flavor was good, but far from spicy. However, the young woman at the counter was very nice and super engaging. I listened to her interact with several people while I was here and she was great with everyone. And during one of these interactions a woman came in to pick up one of their homemade coconut cakes. It looked beautiful and she couldn't stop raving about how good it was. So I bought a slice. Oh my god, this is one of the best cakes I've ever tasted. Do yourself a favor and get this cake. So, while the meal was only four star for me, the service and dessert pushed it to a five. read more

Thai Spoon gave me one of the most disappointing experiences I've ever had with a restaurant. I've been a frequent customer in the past, but never again. I realize now that their staff is sloppy, inconsiderate and completely uncaring of even their frequent customers. I was given the wrong takeout order and made it all the way home before I realized I didn't have the correct items. After driving 20 minutes BACK to the restaurant, at night and in the middle of a downpour, the guy working the counter had the gall to try and charge me the $2 difference in my order and the incorrect order I was given, despite the huge inconvenience of the entire situation falling squarely in my lap. No actual apologies were given, but he and the cashier did try to blame me for their mistake, with the cashier deflecting responsibility by telling me that she repeated the order back to me. In actuality, the cashier was difficult to understand due to her broken english, so I repeated it back to her twice while the other guy distracted her by trying to carry on a personal conversation with her about work schedules. I pressed that I should be compensated in some way for my time and personal expense at rectifying THEIR mistake, but was stonewalled by her repeated assertion that she had repeated my order back to me, as if this is their only means of verifying orders. No itemized receipt was offered at checkout, so I'm left to assume that their service processes simply are this lazy. Thai Spoon certainly doesn't display any consideration for their customers otherwise. read more

Let me start by saying that I would have given 5 stars if the air conditioning was working. I don't know if it was out or they were conserving energy on a holiday weekend but I don't like being hot when I'm eating. So now onto the food: Started with the chicken larb, it was quite good. Slightly spicy, lemony from the lemon grass, tangy from the vinegar and a little bit sweet. An excellent beginning. I had the spicy chili dish with beef, red and green peppers, bamboo shoots, and onions in a spicy sauce served with Jasmine rice on the side. I got the spiciness level just below the Thai Spicy. I usually get the Thai Spicy but with a new place I didn't want to destroy my taste buds. This was a pretty solid level of spiciness. Across the board the flavors were excellent. My dinner companion had the massaman curry beef. The flavors were again spot on. Slightly sweet with hints of cardamom,cinnamon and cloves. She also got the Thai iced tea which was delicious. All around very good. Hopefully the air will be on next time, and there will be a next time as I'm going to probably make this my go to Thai place. read more

The food here is pretty solid. I like a good thai restaurant. The prices here are reasonable for the area. There is no ambience to speak of but solid food makes up for it. The waitresses I've dealt with are good. The owner is friendly IF he knows you. I watched him gift calamari appetizers and bigger dishes to his friends. He was also speaking to them and holding long conversations. Anyone who has ever eaten here before knows that they only have a few eat in tables most nights so it's very obvious when the owner is loud talking and laughing with tables. It would be nice if he at least acknowledged the other tables. A simple hello at least but he doesnt. He walks right by you. That's enough for me to not come back. The salmon was a bit overcooked but we did carry out so that could have contributed. The rice was nicely cooked and my sister's beef was perfectly cooked. I just ordered food for a family of four. It was $64.00. We wasted our money. It was so greasy. The grease was in the bottom of each food container. Thai Food is suppose to be healthy. Excellent Thai place tucked in Food Lion strip mall at Guess and Horton. Dine-in service is attentive, entrees come out at about the same time (or are noted to take longer). Curbside / takeout is fantastic! Our larger orders with drinks are packed in sturdy produce box as well as bagged; no precarious balancing required on drive home. My fave main is their Pineapple Fried Rice, no egg & no shrimp: IT'S SERVED IN HALF-PINEAPPLE SHELL!! Very very good, as it's fresh pineapple "bowl" as well as chunks in the rice / veggies / etc. I feel like I'm eating SpongeBob's house LOL. [ ALLERGENS NOTE = call your order in directly to restaurant to ensure they receive request; pickup apps don't seem to share comments at all / in timely manner. Wheat in soy sauce; dish sauce in nearly all dishes; eggs in some ] Check out their appetizers as well -- Crispy Tofu is easy to share and adds protein bump. Som tum / green papaya salad without beef jerky is exactly the tang I expect, each time! During COVID restrictions, staff was **very** careful and always masked, social distance, etc. Was early for pickup and they had set dining room to ensure plenty of space. Booths along the walls, tables in the middle, and mix of Thai "cultural souvenirs" and pics on walls (and perhaps prior restaurant in the space?) Clean roomy single-occupancy bathrooms have room for mobility devices and/or service animal and/or cater. Sink is a bit high? and "artistic" which means odd shape and likely to splash a bit. Temperature controls are touchy, but once set btwn FREEZE and BOIL, stable for hand washing. I don't recall clearly whether there was a changing table? Might be a low weight / "infant" one (Koala?) so changing anyone over 30ish pounds likely not safe on table. read more

Thai Spoon opened relatively recently (February 2016), tucked into a strip mall on Guess Road, and is easily the strongest showing for Thai food in the Durham area I've had. Their curries are rich and savory, and fried noodle dishes flavorful without the oily-ness that appears so often from other places. I do find the servings of rice to be a little stingy across the board, but especially with take-out, a small thing to be generous with -- and it's so awful to run out of rice when you have yummy curry left. An absolutely solid place for Thai food. I appreciate they hand out their take-out in convenient cardboard boxes (a la Costco), which is way more secure than a plastic bag-- thoughtful! My food took a little longer than expected (but see below). A note, unrelated to food: My take-out order a few Sundays ago (9/11/16) took quite a bit longer than estimated. Waiting at the counter, myself and a few other folks got to chatting with each other and the young boy a few of you have probably seen helping out. He was polite & competent, and I saw him dealing with quite a few irate customers the best he could. Turns out only his mom was working the kitchen that night: a cook failed to come in last minute when a slew of orders started coming in, his dad was at the hospital taking care of a younger brother recovering from brain surgery. Without sharing too much more of this family's personal life, it broke my heart to hear him say he was doing his best to keep the customers happy, like his dad would have done. There's a real family churning out the pad thai in here, going through some very real shit. I certainly expect prompt service as a customer, but that conversation reminded me that I'm a human being first, Yelper second. Great food with good taste and portion size. Better to do take-out. Their panang curry chicken is great. After being so sick of being served vomit on my plate at other 'Thai' restaurants in the area, I was pleasantly suprised when their curry was appetizing. The curry tastes like it should, and the viscosity is correct. This must be the only restaurant in the area that actually takes the 2 seconds required to taste-test their own food. If I take it on alone, I have 2 servings worth of curry. Their Thai ice tea is also good. This restaurant's biggest weakness is its atmosphere. The "granny's pale green" wall paint and stock picnic tabletops are not doing this place any favors. The atmosphere of the interior is sub-par. Despite this, the restaurant's food is capable of frequently drawing many customers to dine-in. Ordering take-out circumvents their biggest flaw. read more
