Thai 55 just opened and it's awesome! It's nestled in on 55 in a cute little wooded spot and has a fresh coat of paint and beautiful bar. The staff is really friendly and the quality of the food is awesome. Let's start off by noting that I'm not the most adventurous Thai/Sushi eater so I played it safe with a California roll and some crab angels. They were almost too pretty to eat! The crab angels were crispy little pillows of deliciousness. My husband ordered the Ka Proud Lamb which was really pretty too and had a delicious sauce. We also got to try the 007 rolls which were amazing and worth a trip back just for those (Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, crab, avocado, seaweed outside, flash fried top w/ crab salad). Nommmm! Best Thai food for takeout in South Durham! I've ordered takeout a half dozen times and my order is always ready within 20 minutes and the food is SO delicious. There doesn't appear to be an affiliation between Thai 55 and Thai Cafe on University Drive according to the Thai Cafe website, but I swear the green curry dish is identical, and, in my opinion, it is the best green curry I've had in the Triangle. Thai 55 is a smaller, more casual restaurant than Thai Cafe, which feels a little fancier for dining in. I highly recommend both places for Thai food. read more

First try of this place for delivery. Very pleased with our order. We tried yellow curry and pad see ew. Both were great! I like that this location offers crispy tofu as a protein option. It's similar to how we make our tofu at home (bake it then put it in the dish). It really gives the tofu more texture and adds to the dish! The spicy levels were great as well. The crab angels could have been fried a little more thoroughly, but it's also tough during a busy delivery night. This little place has been a lot of different restaurants in the last ten years including a KFC at one time. It's now a Thai eatery and it is not the only one in the area competing for consumer patronage. Stopped in here for lunch the other day and the decor is very nice and upscale looking, especially the bar area. This is in contrast to the outside which to me, looks completely run down like the place would be one of those "hole-in-the-walls" all the locals would visit for real Thai food. Not the case here. they are definitely catering to the RTP lunch crowd. Coke is the anchor beverage and they have a full bar including a good selection of alcohol. I got the basil chicken for lunch that came with a coconut soup. The soup was very good and basil chicken was good. The portions are much smaller compared to other Thai and Chinese places in the area. Service was rushed and it was clear that this is just a "move 'em in' and 'move 'em out' kind of place. The service wasn't bad, it was just very mechanical and turn-key if you will. Not likely I would return though. There are better choices in the area for just a lunch. read more

We went here for lunch. The service was fabulous. They were super quick and efficient with taking and delivering the drinks and orders. The salad that came with the meal is a very standard salad, with a bit too much of the ginger dressing. Good flavor, but just a little too much for my liking. Spicy eggplant FTW! I love drunken noodles, but didn't want all the carbs. Server suggested the spicy eggplant because it's pretty much the same as drunken noodles, but with eggplant instead of noodles. I got it spicy and my taste buds were thrilled. My friend got the drunken noodles and they were equally as delish. Also, POT STICKERS. They come in this amazing red curry sauce. I could've eaten two orders of those bad boys. Server was great. Maybe it was because we were the only people there, but he was incredibly friendly, attentive, and helpful without being annoying or hovering. I hear it's slammed around lunchtime, but dinner was empty. Totally fine with me, though it would definitely be worth the wait for lunch. I really wanted a 4.5 because they don't sell wines by the glass unless you get house wine. That was the only issue I had with the entire experience. The food, inside decor ans service deserve 5 star, but the location (easiness to get to) and outside looking is only 3 stars. Fist impression: difficult to get to it. It took us three tries to get to it! It's right on 55, but very difficult to get to. It's not accessible from the strip mall nearby. If you are coming from the direction of Morrisville to this place, you need to make a U-turn at the light, which is very difficult! It's easier to get to if you are driving from Durham to Morrisville.The outside looking is not attractive either. If I didn't read the review first, I would never stop by to this place. They may need a little more decor outside to attract people. But as soon as I enter the restaurant, all the doubt was gone! We were welcomed and seated as soon as we stepped in. The decor and atmosphere was very good. I really like the canvas printings on the wall. The service was very good and friendly. The waiter was very honest about the menu and food. He didn't try to sell us the more expensive dish on regular menu, but told us the lunch menu includes their most popular dishes and suggested us order from the lunch menu. When we ask for suggestion, he also told us which dishes are small portion. He's so honest! We ordered one Pork dish (Pork Perk?) and the lamb dish (Ka Lamb?) he suggested. Both were very delicious. Had a wonderful lunch here last weekend and it was awesome to see a place that honors lunch specials on the weekend instead of just during the week which can be confusing. We got the spicy eggplant and shrimp along with the pad thai which was some of the best we have ever had. The coconut pie for dessert is made in house and it shows because it was something that you would expect from a high end bakery. We cant go wait to go back and try the rest of their menu. We are writing this publicly because we have attempted to contact this establishment about our experience and received no response. My wife had an awful experience here ordering to go, they were extremely rude about my food allergies and verbally aggressive with her for no reason whatsoever. While ordering food on the phone, the gentleman taking her order went on a rant about how unknowledgeable we were about Thai food because we double checked that there was no mayo in the dishes. He seemed outraged we even could entertain the idea they put mayo in their food even though it was our first time visiting the restaurant. Then at pick up, we double checked about the nut allergy (because my allergy is serious and I will go into anaphylaxis if I eat nuts), and he proceeded to berate my wife for asking, he kept saying over and over "I've told you 3 times" and talking over her and not letting her speak. He had not told her anything 3 times and even if he had, it's much easier to just answer the question again than pick a fight with a customer who's merely trying to keep their husband alive. We were asked to "quiet" a baby, waitress was rude, and the service was bad. Unfortunately we had the misfortune of running into this place hoping that we can take out some friends who helped us move our apartment from Raleigh to Durham. We wanted to treat them to good Thai food and saw this place on Yelp. The waitress was rude from the start, we were seated. 10 min. later Waitress comes back and asks us what to drink. She looked upset we all asked for water. Sorry that we like to stay hydrated... She scowled and walked off without returning. During this time, our friends baby was loud, We ordered a large order and waited... 20 min. later As we waited the child was loud and it's obvious other people are annoyed as this is a small place. We got our soups (which is nothing special) the lady walked over and asked to keep the baby "quiet". In front of everyone, states we are disturbing everyone. The mother tried to keep her baby quiet, this is not a fine dining establishment. It's a takeout Thai place at best. I simply told them "we are leaving" then. I waited to pay for the food we ate but they told us we didn't have to pay. We will leave it at that. My wife was upset and embarrassed as this was supposed to be a treat for them helping us. I always order my two favorite Thai dishes whenever I step into any Thai restaurant for the first time: Pad Thai and Panang Curry. My cousin took my family here since it's a favorite haunt of his in Durham. I was pretty impressed with the place. Even though their menu was large, they seemed to do all sorts of things well and people seem satisfied with all of the food, not just the traditional Thai favorites. There were lunch specials so we all got our entrees with a soup or salad. The coconut soup was yummy and a bit spicy which added a nice kick. My pad see ew was yummy and they didn't add an egg, just as I'd requested. Our appetizers were good and easy to pass around the table. Nothing was too expensive and we enjoyed a meal together as a family. They were easily able to accommodate eight of us right away so we didn't even have to wait. They weren't too busy during the late lunch hour (3 p.m. ish) but the place started to fill a bit as diners were coming in for dinner. Definitely a go-to, always good Thai place. Sister to the evergreen favorite Thai Cafe, Thai 55 looks like they are going to make a go of it in this often failed restaurant location... and if they do it will be because of the food. The food is good. I said, the food is good. The menu is pretty typical for Thai around here (and identical to Thai Cafe - and that's a good thing) and I don't know of a weak link in the food chain. The pot stickers are wonderful and the coconut cake is not to be missed by sweet lovers. We go fairly often and have found that we really enjoy getting 2 appetizers apiece rather than entrees. For about the same price we get more variety and lots of food and we get to share back and forth. So far the appetizers have been so uniformly tasty that we haven't settled on any favorites yet (except the pot stickers - we order those when we first sit down while we decide on our other nibbles). The hotness ratings on the menu are accurate - if there are 3 chili pepper icons it is spicy, but in the Thai way, so it isn't just hot. The ambiance is more feeding station than a place to linger with views out the window of an Exxon station next door and decor from the plastic plant store but that's why a 4 star rating. The reason to come here is the food and the best thing I can say re any eatery ... the chef is talented and the recipes are spot on. Also, the young female server we seem to have every time is great - friendly, good-natured and efficient. We've been back - we will be back and we sincerely hope that Thai 55 stays there forever (we live close by)! read more

She order something and asked about the spiciness. The waiter told her it was not too spicy and said he would note the need for less spicy to the chef. When she got the food, it was not edible. She mentioned it to the waited, his response was that all Thai food was hot. We saw him tell the manager/owner, and she did not respond. Really, not sure where all the rave reviews are coming from. I got the yellow curry with chicken. 2 problems where was the curry flavor? It was a very faint yellow and they claimed this was their spiciest curry on the menu - it was mild - very mild. Second problem is the chicken was overcooked so rendering it chewy and dry. We also got the vegetable pad woon sen which was really all veggies and little noodles. I felt like I was eating a veg stir fry. Veggies were fresh and perfectly cooked though. When I first saw this new Thai restaurant around the area I generally go out to eat lunch during the week I was excited to put it on my list of places to check out. After two visits I was not really impressed. The service wasn't that fast and the food was okay. On my second visit, I asked for some chopsticks and after I received them I couldn't even use them because all the wood was breaking off (the wood was even shedding off as they were placed on the table). Since moving out here from CA, we were missing good Thai food, so we decided to give this place a try. Husband ordered panang curry. On the menu, it said it was mild, and to his fiery palate he couldn't even detect the spice; I have a more sensitive palate and this was practically at my limit. Way spicier than just mild. But the flavors were incredible!! And the pork wasn't tough at all--it was very tender. I ordered beef Pad See Ew. There was nothing specifically wrong with this dish, it was just a little boring. I've had tastier pad see ew before. Probably wouldn't order it again. Our waiter was really nice, but I felt bad for him because he was the ONLY waiter taking care of all of the tables! There might've been five pieces of broccoli and five pieces of shrimp and a cost me $24! I used the online ordering system. Maybe is better to call. Dined in here recently and both service and food were sub par. The server tended to dote on us excessively at the beginning of the meal and made some odd comments. Then towards the end of the meal we couldn't get anymore service. The waiter recommended the Thai BBQ and fried rice to me which was incredibly bland. Not sure what kind of recommendation that was.
