Roasted Duck with Red Curry Chef Special
    Becky B.

Went here as a birthday dinner. The employees, Gail and Timmy, were fabulous. I had a duck dish, Charlie had crab fried rice, the birthday boy had Chicken KaCloud. (Or something). It was good, tasty, super fast, BUT this meal was $100 ( plus a $20 tip = $120). Besides three plates, we had two beers and a coke. The crab fried rice was supposed made with 'fresh crab' but that just can't be true. Even if, $25 for crab fried rice is nutso. I thought for that much it might be a huge plate or have a bunch of crab, but no! It was pretty plain, with a little crab but not impressive.

I do not have enough words on how incredible Thai 55 is! Recommended by an incredible friend, we came here together and you can tell how great the people are the moment you walked in. The absolute kindest and most intentional people work here, they really make the entire experience elevate to another level. HUGE shoutout to Tommy- he is so warm and welcoming, also very fun and funny! He greets everyone with a smile and warmth, truly incredible. The inside is also very cute, spacious, and very clean. The menu is filled with incredible dishes, I found it hard to narrow what I wanted down cause everything looks so good. I found myself thinking of wanting to come here every week so I could have a little bit of everything. I'm also a huge fan of eggplant, Tommy recommended I get the lunch special (which usually range between $10-$13 per plate, huge portions and comes with rice- incredible deal). Worry not about the spice levels- you can choose! You MUST get their Thai tea! I'm a fan of it coming in a mason jar with a handle, looks very pretty (aesthetic, you can mix the cream into the tea- sadly my photo is too blurry to do it Justice). Super delicious! For dessert- you have to get the mango sticky rice. A top tier dessert, not too sweet, tastes really creamy and refreshing. Always a beautiful balance of flavors. Be sure to come here to check them out! 10/10 would recommend :)

This is my favorite place to eat in Durham. My personal favorite item (so far) is the chicken noodle bowl. Great portions, if you leave hungry, it's your own fault. It's very clean. The owner is so friendly. They moved about a year ago which threw us off since their old sign is still up at the old location and we drove an hour and a half for lunch; luckily gps brought us to the new location. The chicken noodle bowl appears on the lunch menu and we arrived after lunch but the owner was willing to serve us a dinner portion, which was huge compared to the lunch portion which was already huge.

Drunken noodles with tofu and Thai tea

I tried this place for the first time and it didn't disappoint! The first thing that gave me a solid impression of them was that I called twice to try to place a takeout order and it went to voicemail both times, so I decided to try to place an online order. While I was placing an online order, they actually called me back? Have you ever had a restaurant call you back? The man on the phone was very personable. I got drunken noodles with tofu which is my go-to dish at Thai restaurants and priced comparably to other places at $17 including tax. When I came to pick up my order, I believe the same older gentleman who answered the phone rang me up (his name is BJ) and asked if I liked spicy and wanted extra spice. I thought it would be a little packet but he actually told me to wait so he can go get it and he put some of their spice powder/seasoning(?) in a little container for me which was so sweet of him! He also threw in a free Thai tea for no reason at all! The drunken noodles were delicious because the sauce was perfect for me, it was not too salty and not bland, which I have had before at some other places. I got my dish mild, and unlike so many other restaurants who interpret "mild" as "0 spice" which makes it confusing for anyone who wants a kick but not burn their mouth, this was ACTUALLY mild spice! You could tell there was very slight hint of a kick later on that is not really noticeable initially! The noodles, tofu, and veggies ratio was perfect. Thai tea is normally very sweet anywhere you go, and is normally too sweet for me, but this was a tolerable sweet level and I enjoyed it as well! I love supporting friendly small businesses and with the delicious food and reasonable prices, I'm so happy I found it and I definitely plan to come back!

Got take out from here. Super friendly staff helped me when I got there, and I saw the inside space was very clean and spacious (looked like they took away half of the seatings to ensure social distancing). We got basil rolls, pad thai and pad see sew. Both were really tasty. I asked for spicy, and it was very flavorful. Noodles had plenty of sauce, and I loved that! Would highly recommend this place and I'll definitely be back!

I came here on a whim with my boyfriend and least to say we were surprised. The owner is so funny and attentive. It was quite busy with a couple of doordashers but he still managed to make us feel like we were taken care of. We got Pad Thai with chicken (spicy). It was phenomenal, honestly was the best pad Thai in my whole life. The flavors were very well balanced and the spice complemented the dish amazingly. I would recommend getting mild or medium if u cant handle spice well. Yellow curry is one of my favorites. I always have to order some curry when I get Thai food. It's really rich in flavor and pairs well with rice. So good we had to get another side of rice. Owner is extremely hospitable he gave us Thai Teas on the house. This will definitely be our go to Thai place from now on :D

Picked up a ground chicken Basil for lunch on a weekday afternoon. Parking: 5/5 (Very convenient) Location: 5/5 (Convenient - different stores, fast food restaurants, and gas stations around; not fancy place) Portion: 4/5 (Average portion for lunch special) Flavor: 4/5 (flavorful but way too salty. Needed all that rice to finish)

They were in the process of training a new hire at the time, so the line took some time to move through, but I still got my food pretty quickly. I ordered the harvest crunch vegetable which had all of my favorites - the mushrooms were so flavorful and my favorite part. The only two critiques I had was that 1) I asked for half/half rice and romaine and my bowl had way too much romaine, it really overpowered all of the other ingredients that came in the bowl and 2) the tofu was not my favorite - it wasn't crispy or as flavorful as I would like it, so that's something for the plant-based community to keep in mind. That said, I imagine all of the other animal-based proteins taste better! If their tofu was improved, I would absolutely return to try some of their other unique bowl combos.

I got a wheat wrap with some steak, spinach, and mushrooms, while my wife got a mixed grain bowl with chicken and bacon. We were both very happy with our meals, and while the food wasn't cheap (about $15 a person), I didn't feel ripped off either. The website mentioned that the ingredients were high quality and that the dressings were made in house, and it definitely tasted like it! Overall, I'd definitely come back here to get a healthy meal.

Service is very friendly, and as quick as possible, considering that stuff seems to be made to order. I ordered a chicken kebab platter which comes over a bed of basmati rice, possibly with saffron. Whatever the rice tasted great and it wasn't dry like at a lot of places. The chicken was marinated in a tangy yogurt-spice mix, grilled and topped with a tahini sauce. Delicious! As sides I got mujadara and roasted vegetables which were also tasty. I'll be back for takeout for sure in the future.

"Bodega-like Mediterranean Grill & Grocery in Parkwood area of Durham"…read more This place is WAY off the beaten path for most, but I'm so happy to have gotten to try it out. Nestled in a little strip between a Muslim school and a mosque is this grill and grocery. We came on a Wednesday evening, and almost every table was already taken by diners. You order your food at a counter, and it has the Middle Eastern foods you'd expect-- kofta, shawarma, gyros, falafel, baba ghanouj, hummus, baklava, etc. I opted for the lamb gyro sandwich with a side of baba ghanouj, and my dining partner had the falafel sandwich. They call your number when it's ready. Food took maybe 10 minutes to receive, so we browsed the market area. It's not a huge selection, but very traditional-- nice seeing so many labels in Arabic, and along with standards (e.g., canned fava beans for Ful Medames), they also had things like frozen chopped mulukhiyah leaves-- that's definitely a rarer sight. Lots of good spices too. The food was EXCELLENT. The lamb was juicy and perfect (unlike what another Yelp review said), the tzatziki sauce was delicious, and the baba ghanouj was perfectly cooked and textured. I had a small bite of the falafel, and it was indeed one of the best I've had in the US. Price was fair, too-- the sandwiches are all under $10 before tax and tip, and making it a combo with side and drink cost just something like $2.50. And service was friendly-- although they called out numbers, they did walk out with the food to try to find and bring you your dishes. And while it was an older space, it was overall still generally clean. Overall, I'd VERY happily come back.

In my memory it's even better in the new location. There's a mix of Turkish and other Mediterranean food on offer, and it was hard to make a choice. I got the falafel/hummus wrap and my companion got a salad. There is a small menu of beer and wine available, and we got a glass of white, and a non-alcoholic beer (Dry January). Both were perfectly fine for lunch. The food was super-fresh and well seasoned. The portions were more than enough for lunch. The only niggle is that the poor woman working as a server was all alone, and one person simply isn't enough to cover the whole place. We weren't in a hurry, but people trying to pack a visit into a short lunch hour might have been cramped. Anyway, we'll be back the next time we're in Durham for lunch.

I got my food to go, but the restaurant itself seemed tidy, calm, and welcoming, with an atmosphere that felt relaxed rather than loud or hectic. The staff were also very friendly while preparing our food. We ordered samosas and two stew dishes, and you could really see the owner's Persian roots reflected in the flavors -- creative but still deeply homey at the same time. It was one of those meals where the food looked very presentable but still tasted homemade in the best way. The entrees were a little pricey for the portion size (around $20 each), though I'm guessing that may be more typical for this style of vegetarian cooking and the quality of ingredients. The stews were also slightly undersalted for my personal taste, but that was an easy fix and didn't take away from how flavorful they were overall. Overall, I had a really positive experience. The meal helped me appreciate certain dishes I don't get to try often, and I'm already looking forward to bringing my vegetarian friends here.
