Okay so the first time I went here during a weekday I was so excited and was super impressed by pretty much everything that I kept bragging about it so much my dad eventually wanted to go. Well we took him on a Friday evening and as we're ordering we asked if we could get tartar sauce with our meal but the lady informs us they didn't have any ... pause ... how are you going to run out of tarter sauce at a FISH PLACE on a FRIDAY!!!! My dad said when she said that he knew it wasn't going to be good ... so we go to sit down as we wait for our food and I go use the restroom. As I go to wash my hands there's no soap or any paper towels. Literally the soap dispenser was gone ... so then that made me raise an eyebrow on the hygiene of the employees. So I come out of the bathroom and go to sit when the lady at the register (who was nice and was trying her best despite seeming tired and busy) calls me up and informs me they ran out of chicken (my husband ordered a chicken sandwich). At this point I was ready to honestly just ask for a refund but we just stuck it out. When we get our food it was okay, but I think in our minds because of everything prior it affected the taste of the food. Can't believe I've been working in this neighborhood and just found Skrimp Shack. Went with a coworker and decided to split the Oyster Po Boy and The Big Cat. Big Cat was a winner, a huge sandwich piled with fresh fried catfish, cheese, pickles, lettuce and tomatoes. Po Boy a little underwhelming but still good. I love the atmosphere of this place. You walk in and it's instant vacation vibes. I love the bright colors of the decor, it is very fun. These were super good! I asked for them extra extra crispy, and this is what I got. I'll visit these folks for shrimp in Durham.....bc they were really good, but I don't think they understood the assignment. The service was really good, and the manager came around a few times to make sure everything was great. This is the best shrimp I've eaten in a while. The fries were crispy and tasty. We got all choices fried, though other choices were blackened or grilled, and I got catfish as my fish choice. I have to say the batter on the seafood was DELICIOUS... some of the best I've had. My basket wasn't an over-filling meal, and that's probably good given I got it all fried... that would've been "heavy" if so. The shrimp was good and large, and the catfish tasted fresh. The cole slaw was a vinegar/ mayo mix with more vinegar than most-- I liked it. I tasted my wife's sweet potato fries (good) and two of my son's hush puppies (big, round, flavorful). Price was higher than fast-food seafood, but this is no Long John Silver's... quality seemed a good deal higher. I think it was fair for the quality of food we received. Overall, I liked it a lot. I've been hearing so much about this place and they seem to be opening locations all over the place. I stumbled on this location on my way back from VA. I stopped at the Starbucks for a pick me up and there they were so we stopped by to take a look at the menu and decided on a late lunch. I ordered the crab and shrimp poboy (crabmeat and sautéed shrimp) and we also ordered one with crabmeat with fried shrimp lettuce and tomato and the sauce on the side. Both were good but adding the sauce made it really good and I think the bread could be heated a little more since it's so thick. They offer lots of seafood options (poboys, fried fish, shrimp, veggies, tacos, etc.) It seems to get a lot of foot traffic since it's in a strip mall. The bread has to be fluffy and support the freshly fried shrimp, topped off a mouth watering sauce to keep the sandwich from not being too dry...thats where Skrimp Shack got it right! I'd been looking forward to trying Skrimp Shack since May and I finally made it over there today! It's located in an unassuming strip mall in North Durham, and there is plenty of parking and a couple of picnic tables outside. You order at the counter and there are about a dozen tables to choose from as well as a longer barstool area with additional seats facing the window. I ordered the Skrimp and Whiting basket which comes with one side. I selected hush puppies, but the woman at the counter let me know that hush puppies come with the basket, so I took this to mean that I should select a different side (hence the mac and cheese). I think there was some miscommunication since I was charged for an additional side, but no biggie. My husband ordered the Skrimp Poboy with fries. We waited about 15 minutes for our food to arrive and I was amazed by the large portions on my basket! For $7.95 it's a lot of food! The Skrimp and whiting were nicely fried and tasted fresh, and I really liked the hush puppies. I just wish there was bit more seasoning to everything; without the sauces on the side, everything was sort of bland. The mac and cheese was creamy but the noddles were overcooked. James' poboy was a good size as well, but it was drenched in their sauce, which masked the flavor of the shrimp and made it especially messy to eat. The sauce they use on their poboy is really unique, and I'm not sure I'm a fan. It reminds me of a Vidalia onion dressing and lacks the usual kick of spice from a more traditional remoulade. Unfortunately, the fries weren't ready at the time the sandwich was brought to the table, and we were told they'd be out momentarily. Fifteen minutes later, my husband goes up to the counter to ask about them and they had forgotten to put them in the fryer. Not the end of the world, but it would have been nicer to have them with the meal. Overall, I think Skrimp Shack is a decent fast-causal addition this area of town. read more

I drive by the Skrimp Shack every day and anticipated its opening for sooo long! I finally tried it out last week with my coworkers and I was pleased with the selection, the freshness of the seafood, and the prices! I ordered the Fried Skrimp basket which comes with a drink and a side. I chose the fried okra, and later realized that my entire basket was filled with fried things...I made up for it later by eating salad for dinner, don't worry. We ordered at the counter and waited on the bench inside for our food to be prepared. There was a long line so we waited about 10-15 minutes for our number to be called. There's a few tables outside and plenty of seating inside. The skrimp were perfectly fried, had a fresh flavor, and so yummy dipped in the tartar and cocktail sauces that came with the basket. I also dipped my fried okra in the sauces. I was pretty stuffed and didn't quite finish my basket. I'm so glad that Skrimp Shack provides me an affordable lunch option for freshly fried seafood.
