First time here. We go seated really fast and greeted by a friendly staff member. Once we sat down and opened the menu.. we should have left.. when there are too many items on a menu.. that's usually a bad sign. We stayed anyway and ordered a cheese burger because we were hungry and My personal rule of thumb is if they make a great hamburger then I would come back to try other food items. Ignoring my rule about too many menu items. It was a mistake.. sorry Skillet Diner.. your cook may need some more skills. It's not easy to prepare all the different types of meals on the menu.. I had a solid experience at Skillets Diner and would rate it 3.5 stars overall. The highlight of my visit was definitely the service. Our waiter was handling everything on her own and did an impressive job staying attentive, efficient, and friendly despite how busy it was--she deserves major recognition for her hard work. The food was good and satisfying, and the drinks were well-prepared .The atmosphere was decent, though fairly standard and not particularly memorable. I had very high hopes for this place but honestly both the service and food fell short. The restaurant wasn't busy during our time there, but somehow the service was considerably slow. Our food took a long time to come out and we had pretty much finished all our drinks by the time it came out. Then our server was hardly checking on us. Rating this place a 3.5 unfortunately. Our food was a little plain, it was bland and had no flavor. Ordered a Santa Fe Skillet and Irish Skillet. The Irish Skillet had big chunks of the corned beef, I assumed it was more of a hash brown consistency blend. We had to ask for salsa and added more salt and pepper for our liking. I was visiting friends who live in Bakersfield and they suggested this place for breakfast. It's in a small plaza so there's plenty of parking. The interior is one huge room with a lack of decor. We came around 9am on a Sunday and only a handful of tables were taken but by 10 the crowds were coming through the doors, and soon there was a wait. Several of their breakfast dishes are served in a skillet so of course I had to order one of those. I chose the Chorizo Queso Skillet. Scrambled egg, chorizo, jack and cheddar cheese, diced tomato and onion were served over cubed potatoes. Sour cream and salsa were served on the side. It was a fantastic breakfast meal. Our waitress was very friendly and checked on us after our dishes arrived. I got a cup of coffee with my breakfast - pretty good for a diner - and would have gotten a refill if offered, but that offer never came (not sure if refills are given at no charge or not). read more

Skillet Diner is one of my favorite places to eat in Bakersfield, and that saying a lot, knowing how many places there are to eat here! I'd like to go with my mom or my grandma or my wife or whoever will go. Some of our favorite favorites are, of course the skillets. (remember to always ask for your potatoes extra crisp) another favorite is the veggie wrap and you can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches or burgers. We honestly haven't had much else than that because those are so good. Jessica was a fantastic server and very attentive and really took good care of us at the table. New to the area & finally tried this spot today. I ordered the southern skillet & my boyfriend ordered chocolate chip pancakes, we both really enjoyed our meal, the gravy was so good, the chicken fried steak was crispy & everything was seasoned well, I appreciate it not being too salty with everything that was in it. We frequent Skillets for breakfast because their food is good and it is close by. They are consistent and I've never had anything I haven't enjoyed. I most enjoy the chile relleno omelette and the chorizo scramble. There really are so many great items and they frequently have seasonal items such as pumpkin pancakes in the fall. I tend to stick to breakfast food but they also have lunch too. I highly recommend Skillets! read more

I will be leaving pictures of the food and I do want to add I came on Father's Day. I ordered their mimosa flight which took 15mins to get. They were semi watered down (I want to add I do like stronger drinks so it could've just been my preference) and they did NOT look like the flights posted on their IG. The first flight I ordered didn't have the garnishes like the second round. The food was mid but the music they had on was a vibe. I hadn't been back here since the first few weeks they'd opened so I took my kids one morning on a whim. It is a pretty big restaurant with lots of seating for big parties. They have a nice menu with lots of options but nothing too fancy. I decided to try the veggie omelet with country potatoes. The omelet was stuffed full of veggies and was good. The country potatoes were just ok. My daughter got a chorizo burrito and said it was good and my other daughter went with the French toast and said it was delicious. This was the first time we have been here. The first look was oh this is a cute place, it was Sunday morning it wasn't busy at all. the wait staff seated us right away and took our drink order. we got right into the menu which looked so good. I got coffee and water, and my son got a dr.pepper. The waitress who seated us came back to take our order, I got the Carmel banana French toast and a side of country potatoes, my son got turkey bacon and cheese sandwich with fries. The waitress never came back to the table!! I drank my coffee and my cup stayed empty. until i had to flag her down and request more coffee! Our food came out and honestly it looked so good. The French toast was so good, but it was cold, like it sat for awhile. The potatoes were smoken hot but there was nothing country about the potatoes. They were just cubed potatoes! no bell peppers no onions no seasoning not one drop lol. On the other hand, my son said his fries had enough salt on them to kill a horse?? And his sandwich for some reason was heavily salted and it didn't require salt due to it had bacon on it, We had little to no interaction with our waitress the whole time, she deserved a 2.00 tip for sure but we left her a 20.00 and a nice note letting her know to be more attentive to your customers. We won't return here, Oh I forgot to mention the front doors were wide open which is fine but the entire time we were there I was attacked by mosquitos, I had shorts on since it was so fresh that morning, but i had over 15 mosquito bites it was horrible. This place, that we have sporadically been patronizing since they opened a couple of decades ago, has never impressed me that much. The biggest thing is the matter-of-fact, service WITHOUT a smile, and the unwashed windows on the large patio. Gas heaters would be nice too...before the ankle-biter mosquitos return. Before this business started, I believe that it was a cool club called Krush. Unfortunately, it may have been too pricey for this town, and it folded. Now that it's Skillets, it is not reaching its full potential. As a matter of fact, it could easily become a 5 Star Restaurant, with just 3 simple fixes (see above). The skillets are all reasonably priced, served warm, delicious, and filling. The location, seating variety, free parking, spaciousness, decor, and separate gender restrooms are perfect. All it needs is a little TLC (Tender Loving Care), and GENUINE Warmth and customer appreciation. read more

While we love coming here as a Sunday breakfast spot it has come to a point the lack of air conditioning is becoming unbearable. During the summer when it was over 10o it was understandable but today when its 85 outside and the inside temp is much.hotter its not comfortable at all. This is a cute little diner in a strip mall. I went at 10:30 am on a Saturday and it wasn't very busy. I was seated quickly, and the waitress came right over for my drink order. I ordered the spinach and mushroom omelet with a side of bacon. The kitchen read the order incorrectly and put bacon on the omelet. The waitress was extremely apologetic and said they could remake it. I told her it was fine, though she did bring another side of bacon. The place is kitschy, though very clean. This place deserves five stars. I discovered it last year and since then it has become my most regular spot for breakfast. The food is great classic American dinner food but without the "greasy spoon" feel so many places around town have. The staff are also great. The restaurant is bright and airy Americana decor. They have a good size patio for outdoor dining. We had a short wait for a table, but Sunday at 12:30pm is when all the church people descend upon the restaurants. Our server, Faith, was very pleasant, attentive and allowed us plenty of time to peruse the menu. It did take quite a while to get our food once we did order, but the restaurant was full. I had the Eggs Benedict, the eggs were poached perfectly but the hollandaise did not taste homemade. I was rather disappointed because for me the whole point was the hollandaise. The food here is pretty good I will just order something else next time. One of my fellow diners and I made requests to change some of our meal. We were accommodated with a smile and 'We'd be happy to'. I appreciate when a restaurant is willing to accommodate my dining requests. My Mom ordered Oatmeal, it was accompanied with raisins, brown sugar & cream, so you can customize your cereal. My Dad had the Sunrise skillet which was served on a sizzling cast iron skillet with scrambled eggs, cheese,potatoes, veggies & protein. I had a bite and it was delicious. Our other two diners had Biscuits topped with scrambled eggs & gravy. He called it poor man's eggs Benedict. Then our last guest had an Omelette with bacon, cheese and avocado. A few days ago I decided to get up early and go get some breakfast. It's been a few years since I've been to this place and From what my waitress has told me, it's changed owners twice. I entered into this establishment just as they open. It said 6:00am but apparently it didn't open till 6: 15am. Due to staff coming in later than expected. I was greeted by a nice waitress and I sat down at a booth. First off - the good. My waitress was a very attentive joyful young lady who is doing her best with what she has on hand. The bad - The food was just mediocre and just....yuck. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes with bacon and eggs. I wanted to have the potatoes country style but unfortunately all they do is fry them with no bell peppers or onions. When my food arrived, I saw that the bacon was overly crisp to the point of being burnt and the eggs were unseasoned and absolutely flat. The waitress came out with a sampling of the potatoes. And she was correct. With no vegetables, deep fried and just.... meh. As for the ambience, It seem like a bland situation. In the background for music was a mismatch of Frank Sinatra and Marvin Gaye along with some really terrible pop music. In conclusion, I'm not coming back. I really had high hopes for this place but unfortunately I can see why it changed owners twice. Staff doesn't open up on time, cooks that are mediocre and an interior that looks bland. Met friends for breakfast. Coffee was very strong. I Ordered ham and cheese omelette, hash browns, and biscuit and gravy. The food arrived nearly cold. Omelette was ok but a bit tough. Hash browns were too brown and had a strange flavor note. Biscuit was not made in house. Friend ordered French toast. Arrived cold and was a really brown color not the usual yellow color. Tasted ok. Service was mediocre. Ambiance was nice. Customers were sparse. This place could be a great place but needs someone to give it some direction and correct the issues.
