First time here for about 3 years today we ordered the chicken fried steak with a pancake side and the ham and egg breakfast with the additional pancake as they were out of biscuits when we arrived.The food was good overall, the chicken fried steak and the pancakes stood out has the best offerings to ham steak was a little thin but not super salty it had a good taste but not necessarily a "ham steak" all in all they offer a great selection. I hear the burgers here are very good and seen a lot of people with the burger in their hand mostly construction workers that were there at the time .The portions were smaller than I expected for a country cafe, but just enough to almost leave us satisfied. The coffee had a unique taste. I wasn't a fan at first, but after my second cup, it really grew on me and turned out to be a very good cup of coffee. Be sure to arrive before 9:30 a.m. because they can run out of biscuits by then. We arrived at 10:15 and by time they took our order we were told they were out of biscuits. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The dining room is also small, seating only about 20 people at most.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Carla's Cafe is a little out of the way for me, and probably for most people, but it's well worth the trip. Carla's is located on the south side of town, right off of Union, south of Taft Hwy. The location is in fact owned by Carla. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The small little place is a staple for the locals I. The area and has a homie/country feel.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I would say it holds about 40'ish people.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Carla's has a great menu and they'll probably make anything for you, when it comes to breakfast or lunch. You'll have to try the spicy Ruben or the biscuits and gravy, which comes in three different sizes, but almost anything else, regarding breakfast or lunch, is delicious. I don't think I've ever been served by anyone else, other than Carla. She is friendly and will help you with your decision if needed. It is a reasonably priced breakfast or lunch and definitely cooked to order. Need to take more photos but I've easily been here half a dozenish times, for breakfast and lunch, and can definitely say it's a great place. read more

Found this on a crazy whim running errands. We drove by about 3 times while our running around and it was packed, then empty, then packed again. Which told me people where coming in turns. So our final trip around we decided to stop. Best decision we made. Parking area is rough but being outside of town in a very farmy area it was expected. This morning where a lifelong friend and I dined at this small nondescript restaurant on South Union in Greenfield. The interior was inviting, the food was amazing and the service was spot on in spite of a packed restaurant of locals by 8:00 AM. If this place wasn't so far away from our house, it would be my new favorite place for breakfast. On the other hand, if it was closer I would probably be on my way to being over 300 pounds. Sometimes you just need simple food done right. That's what you get at Carla's Cafe. This hometown favorite on South Union just south of Taft Hwy, is great for either breakfast or lunch. You can generally find it filled with locals who know they get a good meal for a fair price. You won't leave hungry. My wife and I chose the Clubhouse sandwich, turkey, ham, bacon, mayo, and tomato served on white bread ($13.25). It's enormous. Carla put it on two plates for us with a healthy serving of fries (I don't know if you can use the term healthy next to fries, but I think you get my drift). This is one of those sandwiches that is simply too big to take a bite out of and keep it all together. But, I figure, that's why she gives us a fork. I had lemonade and the wife enjoyed a cup of tea. I read the reviews and tried the place. I tried the chicken fried steak breakfast, with home fries and biscuits and gravy. The chicken fried steak was ok, but under seasoned. The gravy needed more of something to bring out the flavor. The biscuits were undercooked and yeasty. I did like the home fries. They were the best part of the meal. I also took home burgers for the rest of the family. One thought it was great, the other thought it was average. Well, I simply cannot break the 5 star streak Carla has here. Everything was so yummy wummy, and the food came out quick and hot. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive and our waitress was super helpful because I almost ordered a full hot mess and she warned me that it might be too big (the half hot mess was PERFECT for me). And everyone, even the patrons in this establishment were so warm and friendly. :-) It was a very nice early morning breakfast experience and next time we pass through Bakersfield area, we're gonna stop again.
