You won't go away hungry. The fish was hot and tasty. Not over-battered. The hot water was lukewarm. We got a refill of hot water and everything was good. Yes, the space is a little tight, but it's filled with care and attention in every corner. As soon as we were seated, we were greeted with coffee and given time to look over the menu. There were so many great options that I didn't know what to choose! I ended up ordering the omelet with both red and green pork, and my date went for the chilaquiles with the same combo. We went in Sunday afternoon. A party of five. It was packed inside and so we had to sit outside and keep company with the buzzing flies. The seating outside seems to be an afterthought, with hard seats and picnic tables. The service was great. Prices are high but I suppose that is normal since we are close to downtown Bakersfield. The food is that darned good. I had the veggie omelette and hash browns, good stuff. I also got a full stack of pancakes to share withy husband and son. My pancake was so good that I didn't even need syrup. This is a solid establishment. read more

We stopped by here for breakfast driving up from LA to Portland. So glad my wife found this place. It was such a cute diner and super friendly staff. It looked very small from the outside but was surprised it accommodated a good amount of people. We got a breakfast burrito with bacon to share and pancakes with egg and bacon/sausage for the kiddos. The burrito was exactly what you look for when you think breakfast burrito, simple ingredients... nothing extra, simply lovely. Pancakes were almost finished by the kids and that says something. Have been wanting to try this place since moving to Bakersfield and finally had the chance to stop by and so glad I did. Place is small but quaint and charming. Staff was friendly and helpful as they had many choices to pick from the menu. I went with the country fried steak and eggs with hash browns and biscuit and gravy. The food its top notch, the service needs a little work. First visit over the weekend for breakfast with the family and the food was really good. I had the divorced omelet. The chile colorado and chile verde were both good, nice heat and a lot of flavor. Hash browns were well cooked, toast was good as well. Really enjoyed the meal overall. The service on the other hand needed a bit of help. The kitchen was terribly slow, we waited almost an hour for the food. One thing I did notice was that the table behind us and to the side of us were approached by the waitress who told them the kitchen was behind and they offered to bring them a plate of biscuits and gravy on the house to hold them over until their meals arrived. We were made no such offer and didn't even get an explanation or anything about the delay. I'd eat there again for sure for the food but I hope the kitchen is running a bit faster on my next visit. read more

My goodness was that chile verde and colorado AMAZING!! The chicken fried steak might have been off that day because everything else was great. They have good portions and good tasting food. This is a great mom and pop place to visit for sure. Since it's a mom and pop don't expect beauty. A friend invited me to join him for breakfast - since he hasn't lived in Bakersfield for a few years, he asked if I would select a restaurant close his next appointment, which was downtown. So, I thought of Donna Kaye's. Even though he had lived in Bakersfield for a long time, he'd never been there! Donna Kaye's has a little bit of an old ranchouse charm (hard to really put a finger on the decor, but it's folksy and clean). Our server was friendly and came back to check on our coffee levels and how we were doing in general several times - so she gets a gold star. My friend ordered the stuffed French Toast, which was two large slabs of French toast cut in half, with lots of strawberries and blueberries in between the two slabs of French toast. It was served with eggs and bacon, and he liked it a lot. I had the meat lovers breakfast burrito. It was delicious and came with a delicious pico that looked and tasted freshly made. My only knock on it is that... maybe it could have come with a side? But for 11.99 it was a good value anyway, and I really didn't need anything else. :). Donna Kaye's is A-okay... Loved the service but the food and drink were not great. I had high hopes since the ratings were excellent Coffee tasted like gas station coffee. Had to get a tea to change it out. The water tasted terrible so it's probably why it wasn't great. The turkey sausage was dry and tasted frozen, the pork chops were also very dry and the potatoes lacked flavor or spices. Burnt Biscuits. (This was a pickup order) A staple of Donna Kaye's breakfasts. There's no way these charred biscuits were undetected by cook staff. As if smothering them in gravy would resolve anything. and still shamelessly passed these along to paying, trusting customers! For me, on this day, THREE orders, each had burnt biscuits I called them. I emailed them. No answer. No response.
