Hoagies is an odd name for a place that doesn't really specialize in hoagies, but whatever! I looked up what their most popular meal was and it ended up being their Pismo Wrap. The wrap is filled with tri-tip, curly fries, avocado, and deliciousness. Usually when I visit a new place, I like to try different things on the menu, but Hoagies is a bit on the pricey side, so that doesn't leave much room to experiment. And after being disappointed by their fish and chips, I knew I had to stick with the Pismo Wrap being my regular order. However, the serving size is impressive. If you're ordering the wrap for lunch, you can save half for dinner. It's that massive. I couldn't finish it in one sitting. The vibe is totally laid back and feels like you're in a beach town. Service is always great here. And staff is always friendly! I highly recommend checking them out. One of my favorite places to eat at in downtown. read more

I've only been to this spot once before, but I enjoyed it so much that when I was meeting for lunch downtown I was delighted to introduce some friends to it as well. This time I had an almost entirely different experience. (To say the least) For starters, the last time we were here they took our order while we were seated at the table. This time, one of the servers told us that when we're ready to order to place our order at the entrance. Not a big deal, but also super annoying that you're prompted the option for a tip/gratuity before eating or even allowing them to demonstrate their quality of service. I don't think so, but if that's the way they want it. Also, last time I was here I specifically remember the menu including the price of each item. I would understand if this were an upscale restaurant, but it's a sandwich shop. I can't understand the annoying inconvenience of even doing this. I opted for the hot pastrami sandwich, while everyone else went with wraps. I also split a strawberry margarita pitcher with the wifey. This sandwich was the worst. Not only was it a soggy mess, but the pastrami was just awful. Mind you this is a 20$ sandwich! What should have been lean cuts or strips was instead all but stringy fat and grizzle. I gagged more than once after taking a bite full of just slimy fat. The fries I remember from my last visit, and were just as delicious today as they were the last time. Also, the onion rings were still some of the best I've had. Everyone in my group enjoyed their wraps but for 18$, all agreed that they're way overpriced. The strawberry margarita was super good! A very good blend of sweetness with just the right kick. I do actually like this spot, really nice place but even I'll admit it's a bit pricey, but this sandwich has got to go. Heard things about this place so since I had the day off and was in the area stopped to get a tri tip sandwich and fries. Parking was a little difficult especially since they are Reno sting the street but did find a spot across the way. Service was great and speedy with friendly staff. Place has a nice vibe with multiple TVs for the games. The sandwich tasted good and fries were ok. They were a little cold when I tried them since I took them to go so that's on me. My youngest and I were in the area and she suggested Hoagies. I wasn't impressed when we came the last time but she's sort of picky so in we went. This time around, I decided to try out the fish sandwich and my daughter wanted the club sandwich. She absolutely loved her sandwich which is great because as I mentioned...super picky kid. Me on the other hand, not impressed at all with the fish sandwich. First impression was it did look super fresh. The lettuce looked crisp and fresh and the fish was poking out of the sandwich which means good portions. But the fish was a bit dark, suggesting either old or dirty grease or cooked too long? Either way it was bland. I ended up having to douse it with a mixture of tarter, malt vinegar, ketchup and Tabasco sauce. The food was delicious, so were the drinks. We ordered the pismo wrap and shared it. So, so good! The wrap came with fries and you could tell the fries were cut from fresh not frozen. I got the loaded bloody mary and it was everything a bloody mary should be. It was a meal in itself. The service was excellent. I give the service an A+ we were checked on regularly. Tried Hoagies first time in Pismo and the food was amazing. I ordered the Stanley and the meat was juicy and tender, we also ordered 3 piece fish n chips and it was cooked perfectly crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside and the clam chowder was amazing. I was excited to know we had one here in Bakersfield, and honestly I was disappointed in the food. I ordered the pastrami and fish n chips and clam chowder. The pastrami was over cooked and dry and the fish 5 out of 2 was over cooked and hard I ended up throwing it away, the clam chowder was very good. For the price of what we spent wasn't even worth it. I love the hoagies in Pismo and have been wanting to check out the one in Bakersfield. The restaurant has a fun surf vibe with lots of seating. We ordered the Freddy split to share. The portions here are large and the service was fast. The Freddy is basically a Pismo wrap but sandwich style. The tri tip was tender and the roll was soft and delicious. This was our 1st visit and I have mixed emotions. When we 1st arrived we were not greeted and didn't know exactly what we were to do. So we decided to just sit at one of the tables hoping someone would know we were there. A waitress finally came and greeted us. We ordered and wow was this expensive for 2 people. I wish the wait staff would open up their dialogue and ask patrons if it's their 1st time so they can explain what they offer. When we looked at the menus there were no prices. After we ordered the waitress came by and just slammed the portal machine to pay and said when you're ready. We were taken aback by this because she didn't even explain that we had to pay 1st. When we looked at our bill we couldn't believe it for 2 people. It was over $60. The atmosphere was nice and quiet as there were not a lot of people considering it was lunchtime. We didn't know if the soda machine if we could just help ourselves or if we had to ask for refills. The wings were good but hardly any meat on them but tasty. The cheesesteak was made perfectly. I loved every moment I spent here. As soon as you walk in you feel the beach vibes .The decor gives nodes to the Pismo location, but with a Bakersfield feel .The restaurant is large and features outdoor seating outback.The staff are extremely kind and courteous.I came in during breakfast and had a breakfast sandwich. The prices are fair, given that it is a seafood location. The place has a very chill/coastal vibe. There was lots of availability in terms of seating, along with a patio. Hoagies is fairly good. I'd say the prices are about worth what you're getting, but I'd say just needs improvement. The Nicco burrito and the Surf and Turf had well seasoned meat. I'm just not a fan of fries inside as a filler when there's fries as a side as well. Makes the meal very redundant. I guess I misinterpreted how fries were also in the list of ingredients. The barbecue sauce costs extra but they don't quite fill it up. Definitely needed more barbecue sauce. Very busy spot so expect either a long queue or a long wait! read more

I ordered the Big Italian sandwich through DoorDash and I was extremely disappointed. The sandwich had no meat or cheese. Not only that but the curly fries were completely cold. It was my first time ordering here and will probably be my last... meat is such an important element to the sandwich, it is the glue and foundation of it, so to completely leave it out is crazy. The ambiance was very costal reggae vibes. The set up of ordering was different than what I am used to. If a server is available they will come to your table to take your order. If the server is not available you then go up to a kiosk where someone will take your order. The menu had no prices for any food items at all. It made us feel very uncomfortable. When we place our order the server had time to come to our table. She asked if we wanted any ranch with our food we said yes. She also offered us to change the curly fries to other items. My husband changed his out to tater tots. It took about 35-40 minutes to get our food to our table. Being that it wasn't busy I felt like that was a little long. We could see from our table some food items were under the heating lamp waiting for other parts of our order. The serving size was pretty big. The chile had wonderful flavors. The fries held the chile well. The chile works maybe had too much of the garlic with oil on it. Kind of took over the flavors. The food was good over all. Then came the bill. Being that we ordered not knowing what the price was going to be was a little overwhelming. Our bill with tip was nearly $100 for lunch. What the server didn't tell us was the additional charges for tots and ranch. Now let's keep in mind we did not order any drinks just water. So for 4 people to each lunch was about $100. That was very upsetting and shocking. The hidden charges and long wait times along with the overall experience, we all agreed we will not be returning. We are happy to have seen what all the hype was about. The food was good but chile cheese fries and a wrap and a sandwich for that price. That was a very big shock. Maybe you will have better luck. Excited to try out a gem from Pismo locally in Bakersfield! Where to start, the wraps are insanely big. You really pay for what you get. Today we decided to get the Caesar salad wrap & the Pismo wrap. They came with curly fries and boy oh boy it's a big serving. Everything was fresh and flavorful. We came by at 5pm on a weeknight and service was pretty fast. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. As more meals were coming out, we were excited to come back and try out more we saw! Including the breakfast burritos! The margaritas look divine. The bar area and sitting area is very spacious and big. I had tried Hoagies in Pismo. Totally not memorable. My friend suggested trying it here for lunch. Arrived at lunch time. Crazy busy. I ordered the surf and turf wrap with tots and a soda. My friend and I ordered separately, but were placed on the same table number. My food arrived and we waited a good ten minutes before her order was ready. It wasn't actually added to my number, so it was put aside until they figured it out. My wrap looked really good. It wasn't. The beef had that refrigerated leftover meat flavor that overpowered every other flavor in the wrap. I opened it up. Ate around the beef. Four shrimp were good. One slice of bacon was good, too. I liked the bbq sauce. Disappointed! At least the tots were nice and crispy and seasoned. That was a plus. My friend enjoyed her coconut shrimp that came with a sweet spicy dipping sauce and her curly fries. Her side salad was huge. Lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, olives, croutons, maybe more. It looked delicious. She took it home to eat later. Portion sizes are definitely big, so you could share. Soda was fabulous! Overall, disappointed. A nice gentleman cooking tri tip out front chatted with me. He asked how I liked the food. I told him I didn't like the beef and that it tasted reheated. He said, "It is." Didn't deliver for me. I was excited to try Hoagies because I've heard so much hype about it so I grabbed lunch from there the other day. I had the fish and chips wrap which came out to just under $20 for the wrap with some fries. I was a little surprised at the price but it's ok I don't mind paying a little more if the food is great. Unfortunately, it wasn't worth the cost. For the most part I found it to be really bland. I took some of the fish out and tried it by itself and it was just bland to me. The fries and fish made for a dry bite and they only gave me 1 little cup of tarter sauce to add to try to combat some of the dryness. I asked for ranch as well and didn't receive any. Overall it wasn't a great experience, pretty costly for something that wasn't very good at all. I could get better fish at a few places around town and cheaper too. Seems like the Pismo location might have things right and this one is just riding the hype wave or it's possible they are working out some kinks being a new location and things will improve in the coming weeks/months. read more

Street parking is kinda difficult to find especially during lunch time. The girl stated that the bodyshop across the street and another business had already had cars towed away. I asked if they're going to partner up with the party place across the street since their parking lot was completely empty but she didn't know if they had any plans like that. When you walk in, you are treated to the So Cal Costal decor vibe with the vintage car parts, mural art, and surf board wall hangings. As soon as you walk in, the ordering station is the first spot next to the bar which seems to be about a 50 person bar, which is first come first serve. They offered about 12 different beers on tap and I believe about three were IPA's, a pineapple and mango spirit, Coors light, Modelo, and the local favorites. I believe I over heard the girl say you can only sit at the bar if you are ordering adult beverages. Anyways, I wasn't a fan of where they placed the ordering station, like I mentioned, its literally right there as soon as you open the doors which makes it crowded with people coming in and out of the building. The menu offers a variety of what I call California craft food items from breakfast burritos, appetizers, wraps, soups, salads, tacos, burgers, and sandwiches. The combos are on the pricey side but its the new California norm and you can substitute the fresh made curly fries for one of their other options with a small additional price. It was nice to see that their kids menu wasn't over priced and there were decent food items to choose from. There are a variety of bottled drinks to choose from and fountain wise, they offer Pepsi products. We ordered the Club with a side of chili fries and the Big Italian with the curly fries. Its open seating, so your on your own to find a seat. They have a couple of spots in the front, a back patio, and the interior to choose from. Our sandwiches were fresh and the food quality was noticeable, my husband really enjoyed their chili cheese fries, I could be wrong but the beans tasted like they were cooked in beer that added a distinctive different taste to them. Anyways, its definitely going to be a local hangout for the people in the downtown area looking for day drinking spot.
