Pops been an east Bakersfield staple for pretty much my entire life and has always been good. Till uber and governor Newscum destroyed affordable food take out, Pop's prices were cheap with huge portions. But now great food at a higher price but still worth it. read more

I had heard things about Pop's pastrami. All good. And it was true. But the burger we had them put the pastrami on was a while 'nother story! They have a drive-thru, and outdoor seating, but we decided to sit inside so we could shoot a video review without all the traffic noise from Niles. This place has been here a long time, and the building is old school, but very clean. The menu is extensive, with chicken sandwiches, corn dogs, chicken tenders, and all sorts of ice cream concoctions. But what caught my eye was the sign on the door, about customizing your burger with extra patties and all. And the idea hit me. In In n Out speak, a five by five. A burger, with five patties, and five slices of cheese. But this one would also have pastrami! The lovely young ladies behind the counter, the ones with wonderful smiles and personalities, said they could do it! We got it as a combo, and of course, only bought one for the two of us to spilt, since I KNEW we couldn't eat it all. The combo came with fries, and I couldn't believe the HUGE portion of fries. Seasoned crinkle fries, cooked just right for crispy outside, perfect inside. But I wanted to see how their onion rings were, because that IS important. And yes, they were very good. Not that diced and reconstituted stuff, like the "King" of burgers. Ranch dressing on the side,... very good. And they have a large variety of sauces you can get. Now, the burger. Lordy, it was huge! Five patties. They were kinda like a smash burger, with the crunchy caramelized crisp around the edges, but not quite as thin in the middle as a real smash burger. And good beefy flavor. Did I mention FIVE? Cheese on each one, and pastrami on the top. But not just any pastrami. Sweet, juicy, fatty, tasty goodness. I got to go back and get a pastrami sandwich, with the mustard, pickles, and all that. It is some GOOD pastrami. Now, the service. Oh, yes. Wonderful. From the inside counter, you can see the whole kitchen. Looked nice and clean. Two guys at the flat-top, smiling and gettin' it done! And two young ladies working the counter were just amazing. Making sure we got the burger we were looking for, and all with the best personality and genuine smiles we've seen recently. They really make you feel welcome. On the way out, looking again at the menu, the shakes caught my eye. I asked the young lady if they had malt. First off, a lot of young folks don't even know what malt is. Not only did she know, she said yes! So we ordered a large peanut butter malt for the road. Thick, rich, great flavor, yeah. Hard to get any through the straw kind of thick. If you have ever been to one of the many Frosty Kings around town, or a Dairy Queen or a Foster Freeze, then you have been to the equivalent of Pop's Drive-In. The biggest difference is that Pop's has been an institution in East Bakersfield for eons. I think that they were bought out by Frosty King a few years ago because that is when the menu changed to basically match Frosty King... Either way, this joint has been around forever and has good milk shakes and fried foods. If you are looking for healthy food joint, keep looking. Meh. read more

It was a Sunday, and not too busy, and although the burger tasted good, the bacon was almost raw, and while the fries were fresh, they were anything but crispy. This place is about 6 miles from the 99 just off the 58. Easy to get to, but a little bit off course if you are headed north. Parking lot is large and there is a window to order and seating outside. There is a small dining room inside as well. We sampled and had a Pops burger, chicken strips a corn dog and a couple of burritos (cheaper to buy 3). With drinks we only spent $20 and this included Onion rings, fries. The food was good and hot. Everything was well cooked and dressed. Not the prettiest place but a decent burger at a fair price. The people were nice too. Worth a try if you are close by. read more

This is my new spot to partake in one of my favorite meals, a french burger. I used to go to Andre's, however, recently they (both Andre's locations) have let me down. Pops has officially replaced them in my lunch repetoire. In addition to the French burger, which is greasy and cheesy and all around delightful, I am also partial to their tostada which is beefy and crunchy and also quite visually appealing. I guess good presentation is not something you are anticipating when you first walk into a place like pops! It's also important to note that they recently put up a new huge menu with pictures of the food, but since I haven't been eating there that long, I don't actually know if they changed the actual items or just the design of the menu. read more

Alright. This by far has to be the best burger place I have ever been to. I've been to quite a few corner hole in the wall burger places throughout Bakersfield, but none of them compare to pops. When you first walk in right away you are greeted, which to me is always nice and for some reason makes the food taste better. I ordered the number two which is a hamburger with small fries and a large pepsi. It was $5.15 before tax and right away my order was being made. When my food was ready I stunk right in and oh em... Its was like an orgy of flavors in my mouth. Perfectly toasted sesame buns, perfectly seasoned crinkled fries and pepsi with crushed ice. My sister ordered zucchini and I'm not sure what the batter was made of, but by far its hands down the best I've ever had. Would I go back? Defffy! Its worth a drive to the hood. read more

They changed their quality. I used to order the salads : grilled chicken and the last time it was full of fat . SUPPOSED TO BE A CHICKEN BREAST. It's not. It's fake chicken breast and it's nasty. Of you like good food, this is the place to buy from. Family owned and extremely nice people with good customer service. Fried food not exactly healthy but the best you can have is here, all kinds of fried mushrooms zucchini etc... and if u want to opt for the healthy choice, amazing grilled chicken salads. If you are a big eater they have a variety of shakes i cant even count. This is truely a gem on the east side that should have a way bigger name. went through the drive through , was asking for 3 combos and 3 regular burgers the first girl wasn't listening to anything i said and had my order completely wrong so she decided to switch off to a different coworker so i had repeated my order again and specifically told him no tomato and no pickles on one of the combos, as i proceeded with my order he continued to get it wrong as he was saying my order back. They did not listen to a word i was saying and got my order wrong in so many ways i just decided not to order and continue through the drive thru , it was so frustrating when i was being so clear ! read more

I grew up eating pops. It was always my families go-to when we had a chance to eat out. I always got the jr burger and bean and cheese burrito. I know, odd combo, but both items were delicious! Even through switching ownership they managed to keep the same taste! Up until the most recent change in ownership, sadly. They've pretty much become a frosty king. I will give them this, they kept the same jr burger, but they got rid of the bean and cheese burrito!! Into my adulthood I always made it a point to treat myself to pops. Nostalgia and all.
