Every time I have gone through the drive-through of Root Bear King on Niles, it is packed. Which is quite telling. Staff is very pleasant, swift and professional. I am always awaiting some form of a mishap (as I have experienced multiple times at other fast-food places--a forgotten set of fries, wrong flavor of milkshake, etc.) but so far, my order has come out great each visit. The establishment is in East Bakersfield and the neighborhood is a little sketchy but this should not be a deterrent because guess what?! The best food comes from a dive. Yes, everything is primarily fried and fatty but it is delicious. Additionally, it does not feel robot-processed, if you get my drift. There is some ingenuity within the food. I accidentally got an onion ring amongst my delicious fries and Eureka! So good because it was light and airy--not dredged in batter. I will be ordering those next time. read more

A good old fashioned drive thru! They don't make them like this anymore! I ordered a chocolate banana shake, a crispy chicken sandwich, a Dr. pepper, fries and onion rings. Everything was delicious, and the portions were phenomenal. I only spent around$25 which is a steal compared to other fast food locations. The staff were very friendly and answered any questions I had about the menu! Really love that they have kept the old drive-in style of the place, it definitely made me feel nostalgic. Solid crispy chicken sandwich and a cute spot to eat from! I love the walk-up window too.

Was passing through town and wanted a local bite. It was after 9, and couldn't fully gage the sketch level of the neighborhood, which probably means the food is bangin. Got a cheeseburger, yes it was good, ate it too fast, tasty burger. The seasoning on the bun caught me off guard but yes it was delish. The crispy chicken sandwich tho! Fried crisp just right. Stole some bites off of my wife's, so good I wanted to claim it. Finished it with a nice thick creamy cold vanilla malt. We waited a little, no longer than 5 minutes, probably frying that good chicken to perfection, sipping on the malt as we waited. Great window service with smiles, my only regret was not ordering more. We were glad we stopped through, definitely will be coming through on the next come around. read more

I love their food, but the amount of salt that they put on should be illegal. You definitely need a napkin to wipe some of it off.

Went here for the first time on a Sunday evening! Hopefully it's as good as the Lamont location with out the drive. NGL it better! Way more menu options and a drive thru! After having a great experience with the Root Beer King in Lamont I decided to hit up my local RBK to see if it compared. Luckily it did! The burger and fries were just as delicious as the Lamont location and the staff was super friendly. Food is ok but young lady at the window who gives you your food is extremely rude. She gave me a weird look when I asked for some ketchup. She forgot to put my ranch in bag (that I paid for) I had to come back and get ranch and she gave me attitude whole time. Horrible customer service, Don't know if she had a bad day but u shouldn't be bringing your outside problems to workplace and take it out on customers. I grew up on this menu from root beer king in Lamont. Still the same menu, recipes and service for over 50 years. The best.

Such a good classic spot. The food is comforting and delicious. A salad burger with a crunchy taco on the side plus a Pepsi is my go to and it hits the spot every time. Horrible customer service, and old fries. Had the person not been so rude and abrupt with us, maybe a 2 1/2 star review. Even worse she was in such a hurry and talking over us and there was only one other car in the drive thru in the other lane. Ortega burger was really good, but the double burger add cheese +.30, was about the same size as a McDouble, and definitely not what was expected for $9.59 combo. Also, you can't upgrade and make your meal a large...so odd. Next time we want that type of burger we'll go to McDonald's and get the same plus nuggets for $6! Finally stopped. The king burger - really good. Looked like a house formed patty with some flavor from the flat top and fresh fixings. Tasted like a hamburger is supposed to taste. Definitely repeat. Chili cheese fries. I usually skip the fries but I'm a sucker for good chili cheese fries. The fries alone were fair. Neither the chili nor the 'cheese sauce' on top were tasty. I would skip the fries in the future and not order any chili topped item. Fountain drink was perfect, both taste and temperature. Order took between 5 minutes or so to prepare, a correct amount of time. I think the fries had been under the heat lamp, neither temperature nor texture indicated the fries were fresh out of the fryer. Will return for the burger and to try something else. read more

Stopped by for gas and spotted this spot on the way to the Bay Area from Los Angeles and decided to grab some food. Ordered a King burger, onion rings, and a banana peanut butter shake. The king burger was a solid 2/5, only giving it a 2 because it doesn't stand out against other burgers in its category. Simple lettuce, tomato, patty, cheese burger, but they have some sort of seasoning on the bread which does separate it slightly from other places. The onion rings were a 3/5 for sure, not greasy, not all crumbly, not hard, soggy, they were fried great, with not too much seasoning either (if there even was seasoning). The shake was a solid 4/5, I love shakes and the fact that they offer lots of flavors, I couldn't help but get a peanut butter banana shake me it's so good! Got a size large and it feels never ending Would I come again? I would if I'm in the area and want a good shake. Would I recommend coming? I would if you want a good shake. read more

I have been going to this establishment for years, but today is the last time I'll order anything from here again. I purchased two hamburger combos and a few other things as I normally do from here. I get home after picking it up, and grab all my food, my dad opened up his burger and he sees a huge bite taken from his burger. We threw away the food after seeing this and couldn't believe this would happen, never have I experienced something like this in my life. Contacted the manager and she said she wrapped it last and could refund the food, but this isn't something as simple as a refund could fix considering this is a huge health hazard especially in this Covid epidemic. I'm sure their footage would prove that an employee took a bite of it after as well. Looking for this to be resolved because this is absolutely disgusting and wouldn't recommend eating at this unsanitary place. read more

Its really sad that the posted hours are that they're open till 10 PM and I got there at a quarter till driving across town for a half hour for them to turn the lights off when I pulled up to the speaker to order and refused to take my order because they were closed, even though it wasn't closing time. Probably one of the best comfort food spots on Niles st! I come here for the burgers, chilli fries, and shakes. They do this thing where they season their hamburger buns, and I'm pretty sure they're the only spot that does this. It's just a whole different experience and makes for a delicious burger. Absolutely love this place! Another thing I like is that they have 2 drive thru lanes, which is great for me, because I cope with anxiety, and having people right in my face bothers me. Never judge a book by its cover. Okay so yeah, this place is in the sketchier part of Bakersfield. Yeah there might be a homeless guy eating a burger someone bought him and he's mindless eating and staring at you while you patiently wait in the drive thru. But trust me, it's worth it. My personal favorite is a salad burger. No no it's not a burger with a salad inside. It really is a hamburger with all the fixings. The lettuce is just kind of shredded like a salad. And their magic ingredient, that salt. That delicious red salt. It's sprinkled on the burger buns and all over their more than generous serving of fries. My little ones were more than thrilled with their dinosaur chicken nuggets and fun little finger puppets that came with their kids meal. We all got combos plus an order of fried mushrooms. I don't remember what our grand total was, but I remember my husband saying we made out bandits feeding our family of 6. This is defiantly a place worth trying.
