Ordered a chili cheese burger and it was okay. Had an upset stomach the rest of the day and felt heavy but it feels like my fault for ordering it. I definitely would try something else next time and give it another chance if I wanted to bring someone to enjoy the inside of the place. The place is really nice, the ambiance is open and calming. When being seated you have the choice of sitting inside or outside on the patio which is nice. I sat in the patio and its definitely aesthetic, only complaint is there's a slight smell that I don't like I'm not sure if it's was from the cedar or air unit they have. Kind of a playdoh smell. Our latest experience dining at 24th street cafe went pretty well, service was pretty fast, food tasted very good, wasn't too crowded, friendly service, only thing was the biscuits and gravy, they only served us one very small biscuit instead of the 2 large ones we're used to receiving. Shrinkflation? Idk but the biscuits and gravy experience was short lived this visit, few bites and gone. Other than that we're glad we came and will eventually return. After a long morning of driving we stopped here for lunch! The interior decor is cozy with additional seating in an enclosed patio area. With pretty wood tables. Even though there were many people waiting ahead of us it didn't take too long. Probably about 20 to 30 minute wait before we sat down at our table. The restaurant itself was very clean. My wife ordered the chile verde omelette and I opted for the chicken fried steak. Our food arrived after about 15 mins. Everything was fresh and hot. My chicken fried steak was very tough. And I have a good set of teeth. And the breading was coming off so by the time I got to the end, I was left with a bare steak. The Eggs and hashbrowns were both cooked perfectly. Nothing special. My wife's chile verde omelette was just ok. The chile verde portion was good and had nice chunks of meat, but the omelette was nothing special. The pan fried potatoes were pretty plans and just lacked flavor. Had to handle some business in downtown Bakersfield, so why not make it a lunch date with the wifey. Perfect location nestled right in the heart of downtown. I can see this place being a bit difficult to get to and find parking during rush hours, but we arrived slightly early to avoid any crowds. They have a very nice entryway with large windows showcasing the downtown bustle, also options for indoor and outdoor seating. I love the look and feel of a neighborly vintage cafe, and the staff reiterated that with their polite and friendly service. They have a very nice menu consisting of all your popular breakfast and lunch options including options for sweets and dessert. I opted for a safe choice and went with the Reuben hot sandwich with a side of fries, and my wife went with the French Dip and a cup of chili. I was skeptical of the chili because it's more of a smooth kind of mushy texture instead of a chunky chili that I prefer, but it was really good. Great flavor with just a hint of spice, and I love the added freshly chopped onions. The kitchen staff were certainly on it today because we had little to no wait time before our food arrived. I love the Reuben sandwich from Sequoia Sandwich Co. but I have to say that the Reuben from 24th St. Cafe is much better! The meat is so flavorful and juicy, and shaved nice and thin that it just melts in your mouth. A thin layer of dressing and melted cheese on quality rye bread, this Reuben is the best! One of the most reviewed places in Bakersfield! There was a bit of a line when I came around 11:50 am for a late brunch! I got the Spinash, Feta Cheese, & Tomato Omelette with Mushrooms (for no extra charge), Cajun Chicken Breast Sandwich, and a White Russian drink. Loved loved everything, especially the omelette! Had the pleasure of going to 24th St., Café this morning at 7 AM. Even at 7 AM the cafe was filling up fast, lots of regulars from the downtown business community, I knew a few. Many devoted retirees that show up regularly, they've been enjoying the cozy small town atmosphere for decades. Our waitress Holly was another part of the reason to visit. She was outstanding. The 24th offers an extensive menu with delicious full plate generous servings all are delicious. I enjoyed their homemade biscuit and gravy, light flaky fresh biscuit paired with the best gravy in town. One biscuit is all I needed. The steak was thin so it pretty much was all well done apart from the center being slightly pink. Such a disappointment. Country fried steak was one of the worst I've ever had, super dry, could have done with more gravy. Ordered drinks with less ice, glass came full of ice like an ordinary amount but went the wrong table at first. The restaurant was dirty. Needs sweeping as there was dirty tissue under our table before we entered but instead staff are cleaning the glass panels between the tables that aren't as dirty as the obvious tissues on the floor. Everything always goes well at 24th Street Cafe. It can be a little tricky to figure out the access if you're new, but not impossible. There have been adjustments over the years, especially with the car wash next door. We typically park on the street and approach the front door through the east side parking lot and front sidewalk. There are chairs lining the sidewalk in case it is busy and you need to wait your turn. We were lucky today and arrived around noon when there was only a small wait. They have heaters, so during this brief time in Bakersfield that it is actually chilly, we were well cared for. I do prefer an inside booth, but there really is a lot of seating inside and in the patio attachment. There really isn't a bad seat. After we were seated, we were tended to right away with drinks and getting our order. 2 of us had the French Dip sandwich. One with Garlic fries and the other with Albondigas soup. I ordered the portobello omelette with hash browns and a biscuit with gravy. I had to take most of this home (very large portions). I love their gravy!! Also...ask for salsa. It is delicious and perfect for your eggs. Refills were always timely and the iced tea was spot on. There are a lot of great breakfast, brunch, lunch options on the menu. 24th Street Cafe is a classic go to. We ordered the 16 oz NY steak and the Chicken Fried Steak and eggs,biscuits and gravy, a side of cottage cheese, coffee and a Iced tea. The 16 oz. NY steak was amazingly tender and cooked perfectly, the kind of steak that really does not need much done to it because the flavor already speaks for itself. They served it with chimichurri sauce, which just was not exactly my cup of tea, but once I added Worcestershire sauce, it really brought out the flavor of an already all-star steak. The Chicken Fried Steak 'n' Eggs with hash browns was also very tasty Steak even the batter had flavor and definitely worth it. The chicken fried steak had that good comfort food quality to it, with a crispy outside, tender bite, and a savory flavor that worked really well with the eggs. The hash browns helped round everything out nicely and even the biscuits and gravy which im generally not a fan of was very good. Service from Holly, and I hope I got that right, was amazing from start to finish. She was friendly, attentive, and made the visit feel easy and comfortable. Even the iced tea stood out to me because it tasted like the homemade sun tea I make every year by the pool, and that gave the whole meal an extra familiar touch. Those who go there on a regular basis know this place is amazing. I have been there few times and I am always amazed by the consistency of the food . Please try the seafood omelette which is not on the menu but they serve it every day .they also have Cajun shrimp omelette plus variety of different omelette and other food. I haven't been blown away by a breakfast place in quite some time, but this morning's breakfast did just that. We tried the bacon avocado omelette, eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy, & toast with jam. Hat's off to the cooks who expertly cook eggs to order and keep the thick cut bacon nice and crispy. My daughter loved the hash browns, which were no doubt fresh. The raspberry jelly was a hit and the coffee was hot. You may think what's so special about those generic breakfast items, but it's the quality of the ingredients that makes the difference. I love breakfast, I love dinners, and I love history. This place ticked all the boxes. Before arriving I was sure it be jammed packed because it was a Saturday morning. Luckily we arrived right before the post church rush. Got a table right away. My initial reaction was a positive one. The atmosphere was old school dinner without feeling rundown or outdated. It still kept its charm though. Server was super hospitable. Coffees and water came to the table ASAP. I ordered the tri tip omelette and biscuits and gravy (these are always a must have at dinners for me). Omelette was good, stick to your ribs, and what you think of when you're thinking old school American food. Biscuits and gravy were really disappointing. The biscuits on their own were super dry. No problem I thought. That's what the gravy was for. Somehow when I poured the gravy over the biscuit it didn't absorb into the biscuit like I figured it would. So I was eating a thick and clumpy gravy over dry biscuits. We also ordered a short stack to try the pancakes. Also, very disappointing. The pancakes were thick and fluffy, but also super dry. Not very moist, even when drenched in butter and syrup. My last gripe was that a very strong bleach smell lingered in the air. So much so that my water and pancakes had a bleachy taste to them. My wife thought that was a positive because she equates that smell with cleanliness and sanitary practices. One other thing she noticed in keeping with the cleanliness topic was that none of the condiments bottles and dispensers had any dry crust around the rim. Plenty of covered seating on the side walk, fresh hot coffee and biscoff cookies while you wait. We arrived around 1pm. This was good since it was past the lunch rush and we were seated at a booth immediately. Staff were so helpful and on top of everything. From getting us our drinks, table settings, and menus. My four year old got the waffles with apple juice. They are big, topped with fresh whipped butter, and super yummy. Belgian style waffles are always a hit. Ordered the Joe's Special for my partner with the side of crispy hash browns and biscuit and gravy. I on the other hand ordered a short stack of two pumpkin pancakes and their Texas chili cheese fries. It was a lot of food and we were prepared to take it home if needed. Waffle was served first, then the special, then my fries, and lastly the biscuits and gravy. Their coffee is smooth and refreshing. I didn't enjoy the water served unfortunately. It did have a strong metallic and tap flavor to it. If you plan to use the restrooms, they are quite tiny. At least for the women's, it had the sink and toilet spaces separated. Highly recommend the patio seating if you need more leg room. If you're into the OG style booths, the main dining room is a classic experience. read more

We've been wanting to eat breakfast here and finally got the opportunity and we weren't disappointed. We went during the week at 10am, which we were able to find a parking spot and seated right away. By the time we left there definitely was a wait. The food was delicious. I like to try pancakes at breakfast spots, and thir pancakes and syrup were pretty good. My partner ordered the chiliquiles, which were delicious. The pancakes were a big size. I couldn't finish the 2 that I ordered. Also, the biscuits are homemade, which is always a plus for breakfast. My wife had a hot links scramble that was room temp at best and covered in cheese that they didnt eve bother to melt before sending it out. Her pan fried potatoes were only half cooked and were seasoned with hopes and dreams, because there certainly wasnt any salt and pepper on them. I got a tri tip omelet that had pieces of tri tip in it shaved so thin that you could see through them. My has browns were piled high and again were seasoned with the idea of seasoning, but none actually touched them. Food well it was phenomenal , portions were plentifully and presentation was appealing to the eye. Interior was a step back into time with a sit down counter, booths that were very comfortable and clean this place was old school charm.
