They have good food. Generous portions, my only gripe was it was busy. Only had to wait 10 minutes to get seated. But waited 25 minutes before someone took our drink order and 45 minutes to get our food order taken. After that it was reasonable time before our food came. We went here last week for a work lunch. I got the half sandwich with a cup of soup. It happened to be Albondigas for the soup of the day and oh em gee! That soup was FULL of flavor. Some of the best Albondigas I've ever had and I make a mean meatball soup myself! Our server was lovely and helpful. My co-worker who wasn't there had wanted an old menu item that was no longer available...she made the necessary modifications and got him something by very similar to what he was craving. Don't get me wrong, I really like their food. However, last time I was there, I was waiting at the front. I saw one of the waitresses fondling peoples food with her bare hands. She lifted up a blueberry pancake with her bare hand, then grabbed a second pancake with her bare hand and added it to the plate. Then she was picking up pieces of watermelon from the side of fruit, again, with her bare fingers. Then she wiped her hand on her apron. This food then got served to a customer. The Sugar Mill is kern county staple it's been around for years and I finally got myself to break away from my usual go to breakfast spots and try some place different. I have to say it was okay not great I was kinda disappointed that the Gravy wasn't homemade it was a typical food service bag gravy although the biscuits seemed to be made in house the gravy was the bummer. The pancakes were pretty good and my wife's Chicken fried steak was pan fried but seemed to be lacking a bit of seasoning. The country potatoes were pretty delicious. In my honest opinion I'd give the food a 3.5 I decided to give it 4 stars on Yelp because the service was great the staff was friendly and attentive. Maybe on the next go around I'll try something different on the menu and update my review. read more

Wifey and I shared two entrees. The Grilled Pork Chop entree and the Chile Verde Skillet. The pork chop tasted too dry. Would try the breaded pork chop next time. The Chile Verde was a nicer option in my opinion. Tasted pretty darn good, and the portion size was generous. The Sugar Mill has plenty of other items to try on their menu. Me and my daughter ordered the pancake breakfast. She requested the blueberry and I got regular. Pancakes are a solid 9/10. Daughters are 8/10. They are Fluffy Buttery Moist Yummy Is the plate aesthetically pleasing? No. That's why they get 4 out of 5. The eggs and sausage taste decent. Staff is friendly. Clean environment. My grandma recommended this place to eat after church. Safe to say it's a great small business. They love their senior citizens and have often regulars that love this place. Was a great environment and solid food. Only thing they can work on is the service. Maybe they were understaffed but they seemed over worked which made their ability to provide phenomenal customer service harder as they had a lot to do.
