Very trendy place. Came in on Sunday at noon and it was packed. Lots of outlets so it is a good place to come in to study and take a break. The cranberry scone was very good and the coffee looks so cool but tasted a little watered down for my taste. Next time I'm going to try the iced coffee. read more

Siphon Coffee - Siphon for one and a cranberry scone - Cafes Near Me - Houston, Texas

Great location and great coffee. Seems to be the spot for Rice students and hipsters, which is cool but not ideal if you're going to meet friends for a pow-wow. I felt like I was the loudest person in the place the whole time...which I might have been, but it seemed to be focused professional hippies. I was a first-time at Siphon, so I kept my order simple and went for a latte with vanilla almond milk. Loved it! I wasn't sure why they had coffee priced at $7.00 on the menu, but after asking an employee and looking around, I found out that this was for their Siphon special, which is individually brewed and allegedly less bitter than regular coffee. Not sure if that's for me -- I love a cup of classic coffee with cream. Siphon Coffee does have a great atmosphere and has a cozy area of leather chairs to sit and read in. They also had a good-looking assortment of pastries which I'll be sure to try if I go back. I can't really judge a coffee shop until I've had their cookies or scones. read more

This place is Awesommmmmeee! Even when I passed by it months ago (when it was still under construction) I had a good feeling about this place. Siphon Coffee has all the workings of a great coffee shop, but without the pretentious attitude. We came here twice before, only to be sadly turned down because they closed early during their soft opening. The second time we came the owner (I think) apologized and thanked us for making the journey to the coffee shop. Finally, their regular hours started this week and my friends and I could finally try this place. We ordered the siphon coffee for two, a blondie brownie, a sea salt chocolate chip cookie, and a cheese and meat plate. The coffee was really fragrant and delicious. You can tell that the staff knows their coffee. We got the suggestion to let the coffee "breathe" for a little bit before consuming. I added a little bit of sugar and milk to my coffee- I don't think it took the flavor of the coffee away at all. The cookie was a little burnt around the edges but still had a pretty good texture, and a good chocolate chip to cookie batter ratio. The blondie was my favorite, sweet, good texture, and a hint of salt. The cheese and meat plate was one of the best I've had. We got a selection of brie (very mellow flavored), Gruyere (so creamy) and blue cheese. We also got prosciutto, salami, and another cured meat that I don't remember what the name was.. we also got pickles, mustard (really good mustard), mixed nuts, and quince jelly. The entire plate came with three long slices of toast, and we could break the toast and put a multitude of toppings to our liking. All of the components of the board complimented each other so there wasn't a wrong combination. I had a toast with mustard, brie and salami. One with gruyere and proscuitto, one with brie and quince jelly, and so on. I definitely recommend this cheese plate - perhaps with a glass of wine than a coffee. Staff was really friendly and accommodating. I felt very welcome. Thanks for a great first visit Siphon! It won't be my last! Worth the wait. :) read more

Being in Austin for three years, I have learned to love coffee in a city that loves it. Therefore it became my ultimate desire to explore the coffee shops in my hometown - Houston. From word of mouth and social media, I discovered what I was looking for. Siphon coffee - a somewhat upscale but cozy coffee shop in the Montrose area of Houston. I had heard great things about this place so of course I wanted to check it out for myself. First of all, I really like the simplicity of their logo design. Also, I am very appreciative that they have their own private lot for parking. When I first walked into Siphon Coffee, I was impressed by their interior design of eclectic lights hanging from the ceilings and the wood furnishings. This coffee shop has an elegant and cozy ambiance. They do have a one table with a vintage video game on it which adds onto how eclectic this coffee shop is. It is a bit of a loud place to study at where it is mostly a busywork/hang out with friends kind of environment. I was very impressed by how friendly the staff was - a barista even came by my table and asked how the coffee was. Now onto my favorite part - coffee and dessert! Even though there are many coffee shops in Houston, Siphon Coffee sets itself apart by their unique way of brewing coffee. The taste of the coffee had fruity notes in it where the coffee beans were those of a lighter roast. The coffee was satisfyingly smoother than drip coffee; however, it is not like there was a very significant difference. I also tried their pumpkin bread with cream cheese frosting made from Fluff Bake Bar. This dessert was a little bit better than average where I was not super blown away by it. However, it is always enjoyable to drink coffee and eat dessert with good company. According to Houston CultureMap, the brewer is $13,000 from Japan that uses halogen bulbs, rather than an open flame, to heat the siphon. Because of such a pricey and fancy machine, it makes sense that a siphon coffee for one is $7 and for two is $11. You must remember that you are paying for the experience of watching the coffee being brewed. It made me feel like I was in a chemistry class and the whole process was mesmerizing. I would advise you to order the siphon coffee at least once to have the full experience of Siphon Coffee. From then on, only order it if you feel like being fancy and you want to treat yourself. If you simply want coffee, just order the normal cup. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here and I am definitely going back - moreso for it's ambiance than it's coffee. read more

Siphon try's really hard to be a trendy upper Montrose coffee shop and it succeeds. Upon entering the dark, open, under lit warehouse like space you are blinded by a sea of polished aluminum laptops with row after row of glowing tree fruit symbols. When you get to the counter you are promptly ignored until you look like you know what you want. Most of yupsters get the siphon which resembles a miniature meth lab but unfortunately only makes over priced tasteless coffee. They make a pretty good latte and their cold brew is stellar. I also love the smoking dog patio with misting fans. Bring your attitude and make sure your MacBook Air is fully charged because outlets are as scarce as the service. read more

Got a small green tea. 4 dollars and change? Wtf I like supporting small local businesses but when the staff is rude and the prices are this high. Can't go wrong with their iced coffee. I've tried the macchiato and had no idea how to drink it since it came with a side of carbonated water. I was with a date who didn't know either. The cashier guy did warn us but it was one of those moments where I didn't really hear him and just smiled + nodded. Big mistake lol. The next time I went here, I went with something safe - iced coffee and decided that was an awesome decision. My friend and I went here to catch up so she got an espresso (nice and strong) and a moon cake (marshmallow-y, fluffy and crumby). We loved people watching here bc she goes to school in Lubbock and we both live in Alief. Shout out to all the man buns, hipster fashion and glasses! We don't see much of that in our part of town. read more

The feeling of exploring new grounds of trying new coffee shops excite me beyond belief. So, walking up to this neighborhood coffee shop gave me high hopes. Review and pictures help escalate the hype. The parking lot is a good size especially for Sunday. The parking lot is bigger than the amount of people alloted for the coffee shop. I shared a siphon with a friend, my other friend had an espresso, and my sister had a tea. It was exciting to watch them make the siphon and my friend and I asked questions. The espresso was bitter (if you're had a correctly made espresso, it shouldn't be bitter), the tea was barely average, and the siphon is only fun to watch not good to drink. Perhaps I went on an off day. Perhaps going on my birthday was a mistake. Am I willing to try it again, only if a friend really wants to go there. Would I venture out for this coffee shop? - no! read more

Fantástico! I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of this new coffee house, and I must say that I am tremendously impressed! It is very hip, open & spacious. They serve breakfast until 11:00am, I must say their version of the Croque Madame, the Croque Madame in a Hole is phenomenal. It looks a bit scary when you see this huge sandwich made of very large oversized bread; however, it is overflowing with delicious hunks of ham, gooey gruyere & covered with a béchamel with a peppery bite then topped with an utterly perfect poached egg. DEVINE! Now on to the coffee: they offer Amaya coffee, the Cataline guy is here today helping out. I ordered my famous Cortado which was smooth, not too strong, but very flavorful and perfectly done. I also ordered an Iced Vanilla Caramel Latte which is perfectly sweet without overpowering the flavor of the coffee and is also very smooth. Other breakfast offerings include a daily quiche, empanadas, yogurt, Texas Benedict and various assortment if pastries. I hear they offer paninis for lunch time, have lite bites & also have beer & wine on tap. I will definitely be returning here again! read more

Great coffeehouse if you're looking for a place to work for a while. They won't hover or kick you out. There are lots of seating options - long bar tables, smaller tables for 2, single seating sofas, and an outdoor patio. There are multiple outlets underneath the bar tables. Lots of windows and natural lighting. I tried the monk-something tea recommended by the cashier which was a lovely mix of mint and chamomile and then a mint tea. Both were served in a French press and recommended to be steeped for four minutes before pouring. They have scones and sweets and sandwiches. I picked up a couple of cookies to go - a Fluffer Nutter and Hobnob. It was very crowded on a Saturday afternoon, but finding spaces for parking on the street and sitting inside weren't too hard. There were lots of 20-30-somethings studying or meeting or picking up food to go. Noise level was pretty loud with conversation above indie and pop music. They accept credit cards and you can have receipts emailed. I will definitely keep this place in mind to use as a meeting spot. read more

Cool place, great decor. Very nice atmosphere to chill and lounge around. It's just expensive. Tried the siphon, it was average, I wouldn't pay $11 for it again. I'll stick with the latte. Cool to watch the siphons at work, but ultimately, you're still getting coffee that tastes like any other coffee. Except this time it's at a much higher price. I will say though, if you have a group of two people, a "siphon for one" is probably adequate. A "siphon for two" is enough coffee to fill 6 cups. read more

I am absolutely in love with this place. I have been ever since it has opened, and I probably come here more than I should. Siphon is my favorite coffee shop in Houston. The first time around, I had to try the siphon coffee. Not only does it look strange but it makes such pure and crisp coffee. Getting the siphon is a cool experience and is a great conversation piece. The siphon is a bit expensive though. Now I'll usually opt for a cold-brew, Americano, cortado, or latte, all of which are smooth and well-made. If I'm feeling fancy, I'll get the macchiato. I love the macchiato because you get two strong shots (one marked) and a little cup of carbonated water, which is a nice touch. I also like the pastries to go with my coffee. I usually get the sea salt chocolate chip cookie (it's huge) or oreo. They make some food in-house while some is from Fluff Bake Bar. Dipping the oreo in a warm latte is my favorite thing to do. I go to Siphon to get work done, read, or just chill. I get such creative vibes and positive energy there. The decor is industrial-looking. This place also has beautiful wooden tables and a few couches. There's a TV and books in a corner. One time, I watched a Rockets game while flipping through art books and drinking coffee on a couch - so perfect. I also really appreciate the music they play. There's outdoor seating in the front and a small patio on the side. Siphon has gotten increasingly busier, so sometimes it's harder to find a good spot to set up shop. Parking usually isn't an issue since the lot is quite big compared to other coffee shops. Otherwise, there's always neighborhood parking in the area. If you couldn't already tell, I freaking love this place. read more

Even if you're not a coffee drinker, this place is still neat to check out, where you'll appreciate how coffee is prepared. Instantly when you walk in, you'll see glass of beakers and flasks that will remind you of chemistry class but instead it's an experiment of food that surely won't get you bored. I usually order the chai tea latte. Great presentation and taste fantastic! There's plenty of seats and games. However, the place gets packed quick though and people usually stay there for a long time to hang out. The downside is that it's a bit more expansive than other coffee shops. They offer food as well but have not had a chance to try yet. The question is, is syphon coffee tastes better than traditional brewing? In my opinion, not a game changer but definitely a proven method to make for a strong argument. Tip: machiatto and herbal ice tea are great options too. read more

I might lose some cool points here, but I thought the place was okay. It was definitely hipster-like and very trendy, I will say that. The place was packed when I went and that obviously means it's popular among others. But I guess my friends and I didn't really get the same vibe. Maybe if we didn't sit at the bar area looking out the parking lot I would feel differently. My friend and I ordered Siphon Coffee for Two and while the technique they use to make it is very interesting and fascinating to watch, I thought the coffee was pretty average. However, I'm pleased that we were able to have three cups each. I'm happy that Houston is starting to get places like this because it means our city is growing, but I didn't think it was worth the long drive into the city. Maybe if I were in the area, then I'd be open to having it again. The prices weren't bad, and everybody around us seemed to enjoy their surrounding. I wouldn't rule this place out entirely; I should probably give it another shot somewhere down the road. read more

As someone who lives a few blocks away, I'm a fan! I was excited enough to see Montrose Mercantile open up one direction down my street and then Siphon popped up the other direction! Now we've got more hipster coffee shop options than I can shake a stick at! Big plus above Montrose Mercantile is that they offer hot food on top of well done coffee, espresso, etc. Price point is a little high for their cafe style food options (panini press, egg in a hole, etc) but as I slowly make my way down the menu of artisinal sandwiches I can see there's a good amount of care put into each plate. I'm lost on their hours. Their soft opening was restrictive, but they then said they were open until 10 on weekdays then midnight Friday and Saturday night. I drive by and didn't see them open that late, so hopefully they get the newness ironed out. If you like quiet coffee shops where you can curl up take a sip and take in the calm and caffeine, go to Montrose Mercantile down the street. If you like more bustly coffee shops (or siphon coffee specifically) that also offers food, go to Siphon. Either direction I win. read more

Starting off with the good: the coffee here was bomb. Really tasty, not too acidic or anything, and no extra charge for non-dairy milks. I also really liked the atmosphere. It was really chill and cute. But this was not enough to compensate for the bad: the WiFi. Dear lord. There are about 5 Siphon wifi connections, 4 secured, but guests are only allowed to use the open one. For one, that's a security issue since I was trying to get work done. But also, the open WiFi never connected for me, even after trying for 15 minutes. In fact, my laptop froze trying to connect to the WiFi l, and I had to shut it down and restart when I got home. And I don't want to generalize the staff based on one member, but the service wasn't great. The line was really slow, the barista didn't put milk in my coffee like I asked, and was really rude when I asked if they could do anything about the WiFi connection. This really is not a great place to work or study, but if you're just there for the food/coffee, I'm sure it's fine. read more

Favorite Houston coffee shop - great coffee, food, and ambiance. I love the diversity of the decor to suit what type of coffee visit you're making, to read on the couch, get working at a table, or for a coffee date along the counter or bar tables. Not an overabundance of plugs though so beware. It is busy because everyone else loves the place too, so don't come here if you like working in silence - it is more or less always bustling. I like how much natural light comes through the windows so you have a space that you can really function in. I came to study for a day with a friend, coming in at breakfast time, and they had such a great food menu! I got their standard breakfast platter with 2 fried eggs, bacon and a small arugula salad with tomatoes and pickled onions. Added avocado on top of it and it was amazing- all the ingredients were very fresh, and it was a great stat to my day. Siphon coffee was great too; it's good to share with a friend! read more

Siphon stands out from other coffee places in the area, which is hard to do in Montrose's hipster haven. They brew boomtown coffee, which I absolutely love. The service is great, and the atmosphere is unique and straight up cool. Latte is decently sized and wonderful down to the last sip. I also love their bakery! The cookies are consistently good, and the scones are fresh tasting without being overly buttery. I really enjoyed the flavor and entire without the oily mouth feel you can get with way-too-buttery scones. Furthermore, chicken empanada is awesome. Served with a move chimichuri, it's got raisins in it which I find to be an awesome touch. Parking is better than many cafes on Westheimer, and seating is pretty well spaces as well. This is good for studying or a coffee date, as I do both here regularly. read more

This cafe is truly a gem. Hidden? Not so much. This place gets PACKED. but is it worth it? Absolutely. Tried to stop in here on a Saturday morning around 10-11 and couldn't find parking ANYWHERE. A few weeks later we tried again and wow we were glad we did! The atmosphere inside is incredible, it's clear it is a classy cafe from the moment you walk in but it's not stuck up. In the same room there's attorneys, students, designers, and your average joe! The decor is warm and somehow simultaneously sleek. They have leather chairs and low top tables that look incredibly comfortable as well as normal and high top tables. The staff is SUPER friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered an almond milk dirty chai latte and I asked about their chai (I don't love a super sweetened chai) and the lady at the counter knew all that went into their homemade chai and had no problem with my questions! The chai was very aromatic and the spices were bold and delicious. It didn't taste processed or over-sweet at all which was a refreshing change! The espresso was delicious and light with great flavor. The almond milk was very nice and thick too. The dining room and bathrooms are also very clean! Overall I will be back, I just hope parking improves! read more

I love the lattes here. They are beautifully crafted. They truly are wonderful. But... This place is always crowded!! Every single time I go, it's packed. (I hate that) Also, there's really not really many options for baked goods or other foods, which is generally what you get when you go to a coffee house. In addition, my friends refuse to go with me here because they say the non-coffee drinks made at Siphon (ie; chai, hot chocolate) taste powdered. Ick. read more

Coffee is great, but the baristas have just been historically rude. Paid for a cold brew with milk and it was made without milk. I politely asked "Does this have milk?" Because I though that maybe they had only added a little and was just going to ask for more. (There just wasn't any milk in it). No response, someone else came and plopped a milk carton on the counter without speaking. I paid and tipped for a coffee that I now have to remake? LOVE this place! My husband comes here often for business meetings and thought I would enjoy it. He was right! We came here on a Sunday morning but it wasn't too packed. We found a spot against the back wall which was perfect for people watching. I ordered a cappuccino and the breakfast panini. It was probably the best breakfast I've had in a loooong time. It's amazing how something so simple can be so damn delicious! Hubs ordered a cappuccino and his usual breakfast taco with chorizo and potato. He said their tacos are some of the best he has had but after trying my panini, he may be switching up his go-to order here. Trendy coffee shop, casually decorated with bar seats, couches, and board games. A versatile cafe for hanging out, and for catching up on work. There are also tables outside, for those looking to escape the inside crowd. We came for a quick morning bite, and it was PACKED, with very little sitting room indoors. The coffee is well made, with a decent selection of pastries, scones, and muffins. The breakfast menu is pretty diverse, ranging from Kolaches and empanadas to eggs benedict and english muffin sandwiches. We got drip coffee and chicken empanada. The coffee definitely had a bold flavor. The empanada was good. Service was friendly, and there is a free parking lot attached to the shop (which does tend to get packed during peak hours). Why the mediocre rating? For what you get, Siphon is a bit overpriced. Personally, while we enjoyed the empanada, paying $5 for a bite sized snack is not worth it... read more

Back at this coffee shop thanks to no parking at Campesino. I don't think I quite processed how wonderful Siphon's parking. Anything that doesn't involve parallel parking is a gift from God. Anyway, I didn't get a coffee this time. I got a huge lemon tart all for myself (this is major news because I've kept myself away from processed sugar for like three weeks) and omg, it was divine. The lemon curd was sweet, tart and creamy all at the same time and the crust was even more delicious. My only compliant--softer crust please. I know I sound prissy but I hate eating certain desserts with my hands when I know I've been touching stuff all day. I attempted to cut into the tart but it almost flew across the coffee shop AND made a terrifying sound. Also, the tart cost around $4. read more

Siphon is great coffee shop that probably warrants 4.5 stars! Breaking it down in ratings for specifics: Food-5! The food here is GREAT. Honestly unparalleled by many coffee shops. I've had several things (breakfast sandwich, eggs Benedict, quiche) and none disappoint. I've heard the empanadas are delish and they really look it! Coffee-5! Granted I've only had the cold brew and a latte but they were GOOD and earthy. Music-4. They play great music! Honestly the music is so good that I find myself singing along. Giving music a 4 though because being so good and loud, it's not very conducive for studying. Noise-3. Siphon is pretty loud, especially during busy hours. The music at baseline is pretty loud and then add the small space+congestion, it can get really noisy. If I'm needing to seriously focus, the music and people noise make it not quite the place to do so. Seating-3. Quite a bit of seating but it gets packed. There are limited seats with backs which is not ideal for many hours of studying. Tables are generally small. I will say though they have added a large table and more seating which is very helpful! All in all, I'd recommend Siphon for a coffee date or as a place to go for a COUPLE of hours to study. It's not the most conducive as a productive workplace. read more

This is definitely one of our favorite spots. Not only is the food great but it won't break the bank either. 1) Their espresso beans are sourced from Amaya Roasting Company. 2) They don't charge extra for soy. Those two factors alone make Siphon Coffee stand out from most other coffee shops in the area. What makes this place even better is its no-frill, urban appeal. It doesn't try to make the place more hip/artsy/Montrose-y (if you know what I mean)/trendy with its decor. The streamlined set-up consists of furniture of dark-wood tables, leather accent chairs, communal coffee tables and a small side nook with a sofa for lounging with a larger group of friends. Despite the abundance of windows, the openness and the dark interior palette, the place still felt cozy. Need to go back to try their siphoned coffee (was in a hurry) and try out their food, which they noted were all made in-house. Also it's important to note that they only offer natural sugar options. I find that if you want to serve quality coffee, then you should offer quality condiments - none of that Splenda poison you find at other Montrose coffee shops. **Returned 5 days later and realized that the acoustics of the place is awful. I could hear everybody's conversation, plus the bad rock video the guy in the other table was watching on YouTube. Knocked down a star. ** read more

I'm almost mad at myself for not finding this place sooner. It was recommended by a good friend (also someone who is pretty picky with coffee), and I immediately knew I had to take a visit. Let me just tell you: if you're into great coffee, good beer, a sweet spot to chill, and a super laid-back staff, SIPHON IS FOR YOU. Let's get into some details - First off. Coffee. A freaking Plus. The thing that makes this place so neat is a method of brewing called a siphon, or in other words, an "upside down french press." I can't really describe it, so it's just one of those things you need to see for yourself. It produces an incredibly smooth and balanced cup of coffee for any coffee-lover to swoon over. If you're not really into black coffee, their lattes and cappuccinos are also incredible - velvety milk and delicious espresso. Not into coffee at all? Well they have beer too! My personal fave is the Lone Pint Yellow Rose. They only pick the best craft beers and they're extremely knowledgeable on them as well. Ambiance - Plenty of seating for any night. Comfortable couches and chairs, bars, tables for two or four, and a long comfy bench for late study nights. I've been about three times so far (all after about 8PM), and there's never too big of a crowd. You're likely to find seating (also a patio)! Great place to study because it's definitely not very loud in there. I'm not too sure about the other hours of the day, but I can't imagine it being ridiculously packed in there. As far as I know, they have great food too! Since I'm a sucker for sweets, I've just been munching on that black and white cookie each time. So you should probably try that because it's just great. This has quickly turned into one of my favorites. My new "go-to." And my favorite part? THEY'RE OPEN TILL 10. Hallelujah! read more

Stopped in on a Monday afternoon. It was surprisingly crowded, not a single table inside was available and it was pretty loud. There was one table outside so we sat there, but I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke so I kept peeking inside to see if anyone was vacating. Most people looked camped out with computers, chargers, books, etc... I got an iced tea, my companion had the siphon coffee for one. The siphon coffee was super cool looking and fun to watch them make. Unfortunately, in her words, it was not worth $7 and the 10 minute wait. My iced tea was good so no complaints about that. Overall, an ok place to grab something quick to go. Wouldn't recommend trying to sit/work there. read more
