One of my classmates picked this spot for graduation happy hour this week. I've never been but heard good things about it. This place has a good set of happy hour specials, and different food on special every day. The atmosphere is cozy, great for a first date. In fact, I had arrived early, as is my habit, and people watched. I witnessed a first date happen. They left together, assuming it was a win. Tinder bro picked a good spot. The lighting is soothing, not glaring. The artwork is pretty cool. Some have tabs underneath, I assume for sale but don't hold me to it. I saw a dear on the wall (painting) that I wanted to own. Julie was tensing the bar. She made very good suggestions in regards to the wines, on-point. The food was good as well. We went on a Wednesday, so the pizzas were on special. I went with the three way mix of chorizo, goat cheese and mushroom. Good combo. Had about bottles worth of wine, yay happy hour! A happy hour that goes til 8pm? A fabulous Thursday steak night (and option of juicy chicken) ... $5 wines ... and the service? Simone always impresses - but today was absolutely phenom. The place was beyond packed - more than I've ever seen it on a Saturday night ... 50 people or so - and yet the bartenders were working so fast and were so attentive. It was well past happy hour and the bar manager and other bartenders were still coming around to all the tables to take individual orders. It's still a great date spot. They're dog friendly (shhh, please don't tell your friends ... the ones who don't watch their unruly dogs) Parking ... please don't complain about the limited street parking. Simone is in a safe and beautiful neighborhood. And it wouldn't kill ya to walk a block or two. Cheers! read more

I like to call this one of Rice Villages best kept secrets. The good thing is that you'll never have to worry about Simone's being too crowded. It's a petite bar, not meant to be crowded. Has off street parking with a few extremely small lots (house driveways) that allow Simone's patrons to park in.. Just look for the signs. Keep in mind, you are only allowed to park along the side of the street that Simone's is on. (I'm sure those tow trucks at the Valero next door are anxiously awaiting their next victim.) They have great happy hour specials that go on til 8! They have a one page menu of light bites and pizzas. This is bold but.. they have some of the best specialty drinks I've ever had. I'm not the type to choose from a specialty cocktail menu, but when I do, I never go wrong with what I order. My most favorite recent drink is The Moscow Mule. OH muh guh it's so good (if you absolutely adore ginger then you should love this drink.) It's served in a mule and by the end of the night, I was drinking as if it were a goblet. Cradle of life is an oldie but goodie.. I still get a kick out of watching them make it. Lemon lovers should def order this. This is my type of sit back, have a drink and a conversation environment. They have a cutie little patio with twinkle lights for your date. They have a new room in the back for a bit more lounge space. I love this bar any time, any day of the week. Cute place, but the service was extremely slow even on an evening when the bar and restaurant were not crowded. It took two and a half hours to be served two glasses of wine and an appetizer. read more

What a cute, cute place! I didn't go for happy hour or late night, so I don't know what the crowd is like then. I stopped by with a friend on a Sunday early afternoon, after we had just endured several hours of a kiddie bounce house birthday party, and we REALLY needed a drink to decompress. Cue the baby sitters, and we were on our way for a good time. There were only a few other tables occupied, and a few people at the bar, but a surprising number of patrons for a Sunday afternoon. The bartender was super friendly, and the room in the back was very cozy and comfortable. The specialty cocktails were good, and their beer and wine selections were also ample. STEAK NIGHT ON THURSDAYS! Came with some friends after work because we'd been craving steak. We heard great reviews about this place and man... They were definitely not wrong! The location is a bit hard to find, it's on a street that's lined with houses that have been turned into home businesses. They don't have a sign that you can see right away (we went at night and almost couldn't find it at all), so look for a giant black "BRIAN WHITE ATTORNEY" sign! That's where the restaurant is. Park there, or across the street at the house with the "additional Simone parking" sign up on their tree. The restaurant itself is really cool! Dim lights, dark atmosphere, candles at every table, menus written in chalk... Kind of has an Austin-hipsterish feel to it. Lots of high table tops with high chairs, lower table seating, and a bar in the middle of the room. There's a second room attached to the main room as well that has more tables/benches and also a big couch-lounge area, and the patio outside has more seating too. For steak night you can order either a 6oz steak wrapped in bacon, or a 12 oz ribeye. Both come with two sides you don't really get to pick cuz they're subject to change each week. The sides that came with ours this time were grilled sweet potato slices and half a grilled onion+vegetables. The onion and veggies were DELICIOUS. Grilled just perfectly and very lightly seasoned. It complemented my rib eye so well! Usually "healthy" doesn't taste all that great, but these veggies... Man oh man they made healthy so easy to eat! And the ribeye itself was AMAZING. They cooked my medium rare just right, and it didn't need any A1 sauce at all! My first time eating a steak with no A1 sauce! If you look around, there are paintings of a woman all over the restaurant... Not sure if that's Simone or not... But I plan to find out when I go back again! I had been hearing some good things about this place so I decided to check it out for myself. The night was cool and I wanted a place with a nice patio out to catch up with some old friends. I literally drove past this place a few times before finally deciding to just park and look for it on foot. I kept thinking it was just a house in my car but on foot you can hear the music, which still made me think it was a house party, but as you get closer you realize the bar is a small cute joint nestled in between a few other businesses. The patio area is just as nice as the pictures show, inside it's very welcoming. The waitress was attentive, on top of our drinks. I think they are still a bit new because some of the specialty cocktails seemed to take them a bit to look over the ingredients. They did come out fast and tasted great. My only complaint is the price, but then again that's what you get when you're at a specialty cocktail bar. read more

I dare anyone to find a better Old Fashion in Houston than the delicacy I enjoyed at Simone on Sunset. Yes, I said delicacy. Think, artisan... Unique. Delicious. Aromatic. The flamed cinnamon with black walnut bitters. Not just enjoyed on my pallet but with my nose as well. Each sip provides the beautiful aroma and then comes the flavor. Good tasting Old Fashions abound. BUT... No one has added aroma like this artisan cocktail provides. Go ahead, I dare you. Enjoy! read more

Simone on Sunset is such a cute little wine bar in West U. It has a cool relaxed vibe with eclectic decor inside, and an adorable outside area. We came for happy hour one weekday and sat in the backroom, which is the best area in my opinion. We both had glasses of wine and split the Brie and Caramelized Onion with Crustini, both which were delicious. The biggest con is there is minimal parking, but they do have valet (but only Thursday-Saturday). Simone on Sunset is a great place to unwind after a long day during the week. read more

I love this place! I was trying to describe how I feel about this place... and all I can think of is that I have a huge crush on Simone on Sunset. The feeling you get when you just met someone really dreamy... yeah. That's the feeling I got when I was sitting down inside by the bar. I like intimate, dimly lit settings when enjoying a wonderful cocktail... and Simone on sunset's whole ambiance just set me in a really good mood for the rest of the evening. No loud music here so hopefully you are ready to converse. Disregard if you like awkward silent moments. :) I tried the Cradle of life. Strong drink I must say but I likeee... Okay, this place has serious potential. It is a cute place to have a glass of wine and chill, staff is friendly and attentive BUT I have to say that the music playlist is going to keep me from coming back. Is this a club?! Can we have some chill jazz or French cafe music as BACKGROUND music at a low volume?? This place lends itself more to that type of ambience. I'd love to hear the conversation I'm trying to have without crappy pop music blaring in my ear. read more

What a great place! I went on a Friday night, which ironically had a relaxing ambiance. A once quaint home now turned into this venue on Sunset and Morningside created a tone of intimacy. I have been a tacit reviewer on Yelp for over a year and this place brought me out of hiding. I am always moved with cool art and to my pleasant delight there was a striking piece on the concrete floor along with some alluring paintings throughout coupled with dim lighting. What mostly turned me on was Massive Attack and LCD Soundsystem tracks playing in the background. That alone captivated my attention. I ordered a bottle of Prosecco and some blue cheese fries for munchies. Unfortunately, the Prosecco was not chilled so we had to wait. But with all there was to enjoy in that moment, I remained patient. This was a 30s and up crowd. What made this the most enjoyable is you could have good conversations, good munchies, and drinks without the usual expected roar from a Friday night congregation. The patio was gorgeous, but it had been raining that day so we sat inside, but that will definitely be next to experience. The parking was a little tricky and the bartender stated you could park on the residential streets sorrounding Sunset. Just as a FYI. I will be back and definitely recommend this place. It leaves you with a satisfying experience. read more

Absolutely dig this little gem. It's tucked away in a neighborhood in Rice Village on Sunset Street. So if you blink you may miss it. I have been here a number of times and it's my go to hang out/ neighborhood bar. What I love the most is there is an outdoor patio, drinks and food are on point, and the staff is friendly. They offer fresh grapefruit juice which is #1 on my drink list. I love a Tito's vodka and fresh grapefruit cocktail any day. Sabrina is super sweet and even offered for me to try the grapefruit Deep Eddy's infused vodka with soda. Score! Now one of my fav's. Wine selection is good here as well. I have only had the truffle fries for food here which were great. I need to try their menu out next time. The staff is really friendly and helpful. The manager Sabrina is my fav here! But, all of the staff are warm and inviting. read more

That $20 bottle of wine special during happy hour is key. Simone on Sunset is the perfect place to hang with friends after work and relax over glasses of wine. The patio area is very cute as is the indoor area. I have gone here a few times with coworkers as a pretty reliable place to have fun and enjoy drinks and food. I think the food is pretty good, but overall a little overpriced. The artichoke dip was pretty tasty. We went on a burger night and that was also pretty good as well. I think to get to 5 stars, it would help for a price adjustment, easier parking, and maybe a little bit better location (in my humble opinion). Looking forward to more outings at Simone on Sunset. read more

The ambiance is cute, cozy, casual and trendy, all of them at the same time! There is a modern jukebox for you to choose the music of the place, which accepts credit cards! It is not too loud inside, so I could talk to my friend super comfortably without raising my voice. Inside, there are a few couches, a few tall tables which can be brought together to accommodate a larger group, another room for private parties if you want! Outside, there are tables. Take advantage of the great weather these days to stay enjoy the outdoors there! The really big downside is the parking. This place is in a neighborhood between businesses built-in houses, looking like a residential house in the day time and transforms itself in a wine bar after work. But they are aware of this problem, which is probably why they listed where to and not to park on their website. Don't forget to read it before leaving your car ! Their popcorn is de-li-ciouuuus!! Lots of parmesan, lots of popcorn ! Huge bowl enough for two (or all for myself if I was to take it home and have it with a dramatic romantic movie..). Their drinks are very well prepared too! Their business hours start at 4pm on weekdays. And.... Happy Hour until 8pm?!! I would definitely come back as an after work place and chill there ! Sweet!! read more

Place i've been meaning to try. My GF and I stopped by here after work for Happy hour. Menu was ok. Ambiance was nice except for the food. We ordered Samosa, Waygu meatballs and calamari. Samosa was good. Calamari was too salty and the meatballs were burnt. Mentioned to waitress and she said they can't do anything about it once the food is out. We asked for a manager and it took her a bit to come over. We paid our check and was about to leave and manager came over. She was really nice and apologetic and adjusted our bill. read more

One of our friends who arrived early got to switch us to a booth since we'd have a few plates to share for the four of us. My friend and I shared the NA red sangria. I liked that there was a NA option for that, and you can choose either red or white. We ordered a pitcher since we were sharing. It was delicious and refreshing. I think I had about 3 wine glasses of it. Our group shared the red fish à la plancha, patatas bravas, spinach frittata, olive oil pancakes and bacon-wrapped dates. Some of the dishes were bigger than others. Tapas is meant to be small plates, and they were, but it's a little overpriced. For example, the red fish was $15.50 for maybe 2 oz of fish. The stack of olive oil pancakes were small and thin for $8.50. If you're sharing, it's not that much food. I was going to order another personal stack of olive oil pancakes because that cinnamon butter was so good! I decided not to after I let all of what we ordered and drank settle for a bit after. The valdeon whipped blue cheese under the bacon-wrapped dates didn't taste very good and seemed grainy to me. It was my least favorite. The standouts for me were the olive oil pancakes, spinach frittata that was actually loaded with more veggies and bell peppers and the patatas bravas which was piled with potatoes topped with mayo that melted down and looked almost like melted cheese on top. It's a fun place for friends to gather or a cute date spot. You may or may not be hungry after depending what you order. There are larger plates/entrees like paella and branzino to share.

We started out with the Babylonstoren, a chenin blanc from South Africa. We then moved into pink (rose) with the Ana Beirut - a blend of cab sauv, syrah, and tempranillo grapes with a bit of skin contact to give the wine the pink color. Lastly we ordered the Guelbenzu - a red blend of tempranillo, cab sauv, syrah, and graciano. This full-bodied red was the absolute fan favorite of the table. Food options are on the light side: meat & cheese boards, bread, and small bites. We started out with the warm bread - while it's normally served with butter, there's an option to switch that out with olive oil & herbs which is what we did. We then went for the meat & cheese platter. We couldn't decide on which meats or cheeses, so we did the option of ordering all 8! This came with 4 delicious meats and 4 tasty cheeses (from Houston Dairymaids), also with crispy fava beans, olives, pickles, and bread. This was a good amount for our group of 4 to share. Elena was our server and she was absolutely OUTSTANDING. She vibed with us throughout the night and made sure that we were well-taken care of. I experienced this side of the business during the early phase of the Covid pandemic back in 2020. At the time, during lockdown, going to a wine bar or wine shop just wasn't top of mind. However, I had researched a Cabernet Franc (red wine) called Nicolas Reau Enlèvement Demandé Anjou [Vintage year: 2017]. Reau is kind of a rebel working in the Loire Valley of France who is interested in producing organic, biodynamic wines that are essentially closer to nature and processed differently--more artisanal, so to speak. I read about this wine and wanted to find a bottle locally, which wasn't an easy task as I recall. This is where Vinology comes in. I'm not much of a wine drinker, but had to have a bottle of this excellent wine. Like many people, I preferred to stay indoors during the early part of the pandemic and was kind of nervous about going out. When I called Vinology, I expressed my dilemma, and the guy on the other end of the phone came up with a great solution. He offered to deliver the bottle of wine I purchased to my address. I actually met him at the edge of the garage entrance to where I live. This was great, exceptional above and beyond service. We sat at the bar and the server took our order. I got a sweet wine and we split a small board. I got the brie with prosciutto and she got cheddar with salami. They do charge extra for the prosciutto cut. The jam that comes on the board is her favorite and it's delicious. We chatted with each other and with some gentleman that said they were regulars there. Needless to say we both left hungry as the portions were not only not edible, but also fairly small. The water boy also stopped by and offered to turn on the heater if we get cold. Boy, I wish he was our waiter instead. For a supposedly Michelin-starred restaurant, I feel they really got this one wrong.

We met owner Steve who was super welcoming - he and the entire staff at Light Years is super knowledgeable on their wines and are happy to make recommendations based on your preferences (and something that doesn't break the bank!). We were recommended a white pinot noir (crazy right?) for our first bottle, which was something unique and fun to try. While they did not have a chilled bottle available, they chilled a bottle off the shelf for us, but this did take about 15 minutes before we were served the wine. For our next bottle, we got a pinot noir - it was light and crisp, something I am not as used to in reds being primarily a cab sauv drinker myself. Our group really liked it and we didn't have any trouble killing the bottle. I appreciate having Light Years as a local neighborhood wine shop and will definitely be back to meet up with friends after a long day over some wine.
