Craving some burgers and wanting to try somewhere new, I decided to try Sign. Initially, I walked into the establishment thinking it was going to be another "fast food burger joint" but walked out craving another burger. The ambiance is minimalistic with a few tables along the wall and a long window table for solo eaters. However, the owner/cook are super friendly and accommodating. I ordered the signature and the double burger meal (w/ loaded fries). First off, the loaded fries is one of the best. It doesn't aesthetically look "all that," but it just HITS. The jalapeños and grilled onions balance out the cheese and bacon. As for the signature burger, the crispy cheese was a great complement to the perfectly seasoned patties. The texture of the cheese was just right: a nice balance of almost crispy but also gooey with a small cheese pull. Perfection. I haven't had a good smash burger in OC for a while, so this was a pleasant surprise. The establishment is located within a plaza, so parking can get a bit difficult when busy, but I came in on a Sunday afternoon and there were plenty of spaces available. I will definitely be back. After seeing positive reviews on Yelp, I decided to try Smashburger on Chapman Ave. Unfortunately, my experience was quite different from my expectations. I ordered their Signature Smash Burger meal, hoping it would showcase what the restaurant is known for. However, the burger did not resemble the menu photos. As shown in the attached pictures, the patties were very thin, overcooked, burnt, and dry. The burger lacked flavor and was far from the satisfying burger Smashburger advertises. The bun was also noticeably crushed and flattened, giving a careless presentation. While appearance isn't everything, it didn't help when the taste was equally disappointing. The overall dining experience was not much better. Only two of us dined in, with no other customers inside. Although several to-go orders were being prepared, our food still took longer than expected. The atmosphere was less enjoyable than I had hoped. Staff members were quite loud in the kitchen, and an employee sat next to our table, speaking loudly on a phone call for an extended period, making it hard to enjoy the meal. I'm sharing this feedback hoping management will address these issues. The meal did not reflect the quality I expect from a restaurant that prides itself on its food. Sub-par smash burger experience that fell short of hype and expectations. Going into this experience, I had generally high expectations since a lot of my friends recommended it. Upon entering, there is a small storefront for ordering and just a few tables for seating. Seems that this establishment is tailored for to-go. I got the signature + 1 extra patty (3 patties total) and a side of fries. While the ordering was seamless and quick, I didn't receive my order until about 20 minutes later which was disappointing considering this seemed like a fast casual joint. As can be seen from the pictures, the food was rather plain. The burger was super dry, with little sauce inside. Believe me when I say that I was very surprised; I honestly don't think it's hard to mess up a burger but alas, it was not enjoyable. The thing about smash burgers that no one tells you is that it's very easy to get wrong. I remember on a visit to Minneapolis Toby and I stopped at this smash burger place that was apparently highly recommended, but when we tried it all the patties were overdone and had the consistency of brittle. You're supposed to caramelize the patty, not char the everliving S out of it. Needless, I would not recommend that place. Sign, however, I will recommend because that was one tasty burger. The edges had the perfect amount of crisp while the middle was still juicy and tender. The condiments were applied in just the right amounts. The cheese too hit the spot with all the ooey-gooey. I won't say it's up there with Nice Guys in terms of satisfaction, but it was a very competent example of how to do smash burgers correctly. The service was quick in both ordering and getting my meal out. The counter jockey was very helpful in getting my refill and answering questions about the menu. The dining area was a bit small and they only had two tops as far as I could see, but it seemed to be okay in terms of business and turnover. I don't think it was suffering for customers. I would have liked more room between tables but that's a small thing, They also hit my pet peeve of serving everything in bags and to-go containers even when eating there. It kind of ruined the dining experience by not having a proper tray and basket set-up. The fries especially looked wrong in a paper pouch instead of arranged around the double burger. Their loaded fries are def a top fave for me too. They have the option to order with self checkout and with the worker. Workers there are friendly and it seems like a small family business because I've seen the same workers on different days now. The only thing I wish they did have is pickled jalapeños! We took advice to come here for a good burger. They did not disappoint. This is a small establishment with really big flavors. It is a small place but very well light and an open view of the kitchen. The menu at current is not very big but what they do make is very good. We ordered the double smash burger, the single smash burger, and a jalapeño burger to go with loaded fries. All were very tasty with right amount of heat from the spicy jalapeños. We will definitely coming back with decent pricing and staying open until 11 on weeknights as a big plus. Did not know this place existed, but so glad our boss brought us and now we have a new place to go to when craving a good smash burger. These burgers are so delicious, juicy and full of flavor! Came here on a quiet Tuesday night and it was pretty empty, so we were helped right away. The menu was very simple, which was nice. Sometimes there is such a thing as too many options. We helped ourselves to our seats after ordering. The restaurant is very bare. Maybe they were going for a minimalist route? It took about 5-7 minutes for my party to get our meal so service was quick and efficient. I got their specialty burger along with fries. The fries were nothing too special. It kind of reminds me of your run-of-the mill French fries that you would find at any fast food establishment. That being said, it was a nice addition to the burger. The Signature Burger was alright. Wow! Sign Smash Burger made an amazingly crispy burger packed with flavor without being salty! That's a huge thing for me because sometimes smash burgers can get salty with all the cheese and seasonings, but they perfectly executed this. The buns were toasted to perfection (for my preference anyway). We got to try the Signature, Double, and Single burgers, the loaded fries, and a cookies and cream milkshake. It comes with a double patty with jalapeños, melted crispy cheese, their sauce and pickles. I opted to have the pickles on the side. The burger came out hot. The patty is larger than the bun, so you have go maneuver a little bit to get a good bite. My first bite was a little salty, but then the rest of the burger seemed fine. Service was very polite. This establishment took over, imo, a run down Mexican bakery. Sign did a great job of brightening the place up. There is a bit of a sterile feel in here but the food speaks for itself. I got a double burger with lettuce. There are a handful of extra ingredients you can add for free, like lettuce, tomato, raw onion, ketchup and mustard. The burger already comes with smash sauce (like 1000 island), grilled onions and pickles. I wish I could have asked for extra pickles! The the burger tasted so beefy (without tasting like meat, you know what I mean?) and salty. It was really good and I ate the whole thing. The fry on the fries is REALLY GOOD too. I would come back here for the sprite alone. It's so crispy, better than McDonald's, can't believe I said that. But actually! I ordered a double patty with added raw onions, fries and a drink. Burger looked promising but the patty didn't have any seasoning. They have two sauces, the sign sauce and the smash sauce, they taste pretty similar except one has a bit of a kick, I forget which but they'll be sure to help you! If it wasn't for the sauces and ketchup, there wouldn't be much flavor. The fries were really cold and they were kind enough to replace them with fresh ones. Parking is a little tight right in front, but you can park one street over where there's plenty more space. The restaurant is small but beautifully designed -- super clean, bright, and modern. My husband asked for no onions on his burger (he's allergic but didn't mention that part), and unfortunately, it still had onions when we got home. We called, and the staff were so accommodating -- they apologized and had a fresh burger ready for us when we came back, plus they threw in some fries, which was really nice. My smash burger was amazing -- crispy patty, soft bun, flavorful sauce, and fresh jalapeños with a nice bite. The fries were crispy and fresh, and the ice cream was creamy and delicious. This gem located in a tiny plaza is the star of the show! While parking is somewhat limited, there are handicaps spots and street parking available. When you first walk in you immediately get a warm welcome to the delicious smell of grilled onions and cheese. They have a variety of items in the menu including shakes and freshly made cookies. They have a signature sauce, thousand island, and my not so favorite oily ranch. Only item I was disappointed in. The smash burger cooked to perfection perfectly balanced with crunchy toasty cheese and fresh crunchy pickles is the perfect hangover cure and comfort food! They also did not miss with their crunchy fries crisp and fried to perfection. They have refills on sodas and only have one size cups. Smash burgers will never taste as good as this spot. Incredible, the flavor was exactly what I was craving from a smash burger. The fries were perfectly crisp; they may have been starched and fried cause even after sitting here and almost fully cold they still have a crunch! The spot itself is a small fast food spot, about 6 tables and a counter by the window. The wait wasn't long. The service is great, I apologized for asking for a half coke/half coke zero and the server was super sweet about it. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I have a new favorite smash burger spot! Sign is located in the plaza with Cali Tacos and Domino's, the lot is small so it can get tricky finding parking during rush hour. The good news is you can do online ordering, so you can get in and out fairly quickly. The shop is brand new and super clean, with some counter and table seating. Staff is nice and work quick to get your order out. I got a single smash, a single smash with ketchup/mustard/tomato/lettuce/onion ("McD's style" as I like to call it), some fries, and a Cookies n Cream shake. Everything was delicious, their single smash was damn near perfect; the patty was cooked to crispy perfection and the sauce and pickles and onion added the perfect flavor. I'd say the single smash as-is was so good, that the McD's style played second fiddle (even though it was also great). Their French fries were also excellent, the best fries I've had at a burger spot in recent memory. The shake came out great too. I think for the price and quality, there isn't anything better than Sign Smash. My only regret is not coming here sooner, but this definitely won't be my last visit. IF U LIKE SMASH BURGERS: The food was good as any smash burger. Comparable to easy street. As good as it gets. But again there's only so much you can do to make a better smash burger. Key differences is the trade off of a greasier but crispier bun, versus this soft and buttery bun, no crunch but much less greasey as a whole. Doesn't feel greasy in your mouth. For my first burger here, I enjoyed the Signature Smash--a double-patty burger topped with jalapeño, grilled smashed onions, Sign sauce, and crispy, melted cheese. The beef patties had the nice crispy edges, were seasoned just right, and were not overly salty. The Hawaiian buns and house sauce added a hint of sweetness to every bite. The burger size is on the smaller side, as with most smash burgers, compared to a regular burger. You may want to get multiple patties to fill you up. The prices are fairly competitive compared to other places. The fries were average, but perfectly fried, hot, and crispy. I'll have to give the loaded fries a try next time. Shakes, fountain drinks, and bottled water are available. Request refills on fountain drinks through the staff, as the dispensers are located behind the counter. The interior is extremely clean and minimalist with a white interior and a few tables inside as well as a communal counter table. The menu offerings were limited to smash burgers, soft drinks, and fries (which looked a little basic). Triple Burger ($12.50) - This consisted of 3 smashed patties (probably 2.5 oz each), American cheese, smash sauce, pickles, and grilled onions. Taste wise the burger wasn't bad, and I definitely had to get a triple to fill me up. My co-worker got a double ($9.50) and was feeling hungry afterwards. I'm not a fan of American cheese, it's tasteless, I wish they had other cheese options. Overall I did appreciate that the burgers here are HALAL (I confirmed with staff), but they didn't have much in the way of additional offerings, sadly.
