Walk in and order from the counter.

We hit up Hammer Burger to help celebrate their third anniversary. We love this place and have been coming since they opened so this review is long overdue. The location off 4th street in Santa Ana is perfect, walkable to so many other cool spots in the area like Mission Control and 4th Street market but the food, beer and service make Hammer Burger a must visit. The smash burgers are tops when it comes to smash burgers, with crispy lace around the edges, super soft buns and an amazing selection of delicious house made sauces. We love to get a burger, split a basket of fries and sample every sauce along the way. Our favs include the garlic sauce, hammer sauce and Chipotle mayo but they are all delicious and you can self serve as much as you want. This is definitely a place for craft beer lovers. They partner and collab with local breweries so you are always sure to find delicious, fun new beers. We tried a Dole Whip smoothie sour beer from Bottle Logic and it was insane - completely stretching the limits of craft beer and surprisingly amazing. We also got a hazy IPA that was great. If you love smash burgers, sauces and craft beer, you won't be disappointed.

Sooooolid smash burger spot. The classic smash burger did not disappoint. Love that they have a big selection of self-service sauces to go with everything, including a house made hot sauce. It's a cool spot with a bar and plenty of seating. You order at the counter but servers come around and check on you to make sure you're enjoying the food. Definitely recommend checking this spot out if you want a quick burger stop!

I was visiting OC and this is supposedly my friends favorite smash burger spot. I can see why! Love the vibe of this spot. We sat at the bar and the bartender was really cool and very helpful. I got a single patty and it was soo good! My friend said I should get a double but the single was plenty! We got some sides too, fried and onion rings. And the onion rings were perfect, perfect balance between onion and batter. Also they have all these different sauces, all are pretty good! Especially the garlic! Yummm Check them out!

Another 5 star experience. This place keeps it simple and delicious. Great smash burger and excellent service. This time we went with the fried pickles and the sweet potato fries - both were a perfect pairing with the burger. I really enjoy all the fun dipping sauces to try. I will be back again.

Hammer Burger, or Hammer Burger. Where have you been??? I'm so lucky I came across this spot! Smash burgers that are consistent, delicious and have lots of sauce choices. Excellent customer services. A fun vibe to eat in or take out, they are amazing either way! I also get greeted by Pepper, and any questions are answered with confidence. To avoid long lines, I recommend placing an order online through their website. I ordered the Calibama and my partner got the Spicy Smash. We tend to switch it up every now and then. I also get my cravings satisfied by eating these burgers. Only downside is it's a longer drive than other places but most definitely worth it. The price point is very helpful too. Come to Hammer Burger! No gate keeping here for the best smash burger in Santa Ana.

Looking for delicious smash burgers in OC? Look no further! Super flavorful burgers grilled to perfection with crispy edges! You have to try the fried pickles which are amazing! The best part is that they have a sauce bar with tons of sauces to pair with your burger and fries. The workers are friendly and helpful. Tons of table seating with a bar as well if you wanted to drink some beers. Located in downtown Santa Ana so parking is a challenge. I would recommend finding a structure nearby.

Came into this place with pretty high expectations as I saw they offer a garlic sauce, which my favorite burger establishment (The Friendly) has a garlic aioli and I feel that's what sets it apart from the competition. I ordered a 2 classic smashes, one with just their house sauce and 1 where I put the garlic sauce on it as well. I also ordered a flatty melt and fries. Right off the bat, the staff was super friendly during the whole process and I really appreciate their sauce bar that allows you to try different sauces in whatever quantity you feel fits best without having to worry about extra cost. The burger itself I'd say was a 4.5/5, super good! I didn't love the crispy edges on the smash burger that extended out of the bun because I felt the patty alone didn't have the most flavor, and I wasn't the biggest fan of the house sauce by itself, as it's essentially just mustard. It is worth mentioning that my wife did enjoy the crispy edges so different strokes for different folks, you might appreciate it. When you get into the bun and everything mixes (bun, sauce, cheese, onions, pickles and patty) is when the hype for Hammer Burger is lived up to. The smash burger with house and garlic sauce was by far my favorite so I recommend trying that combo out. The flatty melt was arguably better than the burger, and that's no diss to the burger, the flatty was just really really good. Overall, a great experience and would come back again.

SAUCE! Chipotle, Hammer sauce, Alabama white, and jalapeño ranch

I will start this review by foolishly sharing that I was somehow misrouted by my phone's GPS so I had one heck of a time trying to find this place! That being said, I snagged parking in a structure with the 1st hour of parking free. Otherwise the streets near Hammer Burger have metered parking. I am not familiar with the area so I don't know if there is any truly free parking nearby. My adventure is not factored into my rating at all. On to the good parts! Once I found the place, I walked in and found a pretty cozy place with a nice seating area. I was quickly greeted and ordered my single hammer burger and side of fries. It doesn't look like they have combos, so I did not get a drink (but if you are familiar with my reviews at all, you know I already had a matcha latte anyway!) I was pleasantly surprised by a normal sized burger that I can actually finish in one sitting. I don't like huge burgers! This one was a good size for me. The patty is very thin and crispy and cascades over the bun. It looks huge but it's just very wide. My burger had pickles, cheese, grilled onions, and sauce. I did not find the sauce to be overpowering at all, but I also enjoy mustard. If you don't like mustard or aren't sure, get the sauce on the side. The pickles were awesome! Thick, crunchy, and the perfect tanginess. The fries are unremarkable, but good. Thin and soft with a little crispy, and perfect for dipping. Speaking of dipping...they know people love their sauce. When I ordered to-go, I was handed a paper bag to put condiments in! I grabbed a few sauces to try; Chipotle, Alabama white sauce, Hammer sauce, and jalapeño ranch. The jalapeño ranch was my favorite! It has a tasty roasted jalapeño flavor with a mild heat. If you aren't a fan of spicy things, don't worry because I'm not either. This was the perfect heat for my liking. It is a little thin and runny so it had trouble clinging to the fries but it is very dunkable. If you want a beer with your burger, you're covered! They seem to have a pretty extensive drink menu. Lots of beer and other drink options. I don't drink alcohol so I didn't try anything, but they have some that sound good! Was it good? Yes, fun trendy place, friendly service, good food, and fun sauces. Was it outstanding? I can't complain, but when parking is hard to find or not free, I have to weigh the pros and cons. I need to come back for a milk shake though; it's hard to pass up! If you can excuse the parking, it's worth the trip!

Great food! Happy people! Honestly you can go with here. I really liked my beef dip/smash sandwich. It was so good. I've been testing you try this place for a long time. If you like Cincinnati style chili, then this still is a NUST STOP to enjoy that your of chili. Spicy loaded fries are great. Just ask around a great place to do but have have what I think is the best smash burger in the oc I've had so far. Just great people, great dining room and fantastic food. Totally great place to have a smash burger and fries. Is you go tell them Frankie sent you. It won't get you anything but I love supporting great local businesses who fully do things right with a smile.

Classic Smash Burger & Fries (Small)

Stopped by here for an early dinner. There is a good amount of parking around, including a nearby lot or meter parking right in front of the the store. Walking in, it looks pretty small since it looks like its combined with another store, but there's actually spacious seating on the farther right side. The environment is very welcoming and friendly here! I'm sure people come here to get a burger and have beer. I ordered the classic smash burger and a small size of fries. Which actually the small size of fries is pretty generous and can feed even for two! It didn't take too long for my order to be prepared, so service was quick and efficient. One thing I really enjoyed was how well their sauce bar is so STACKED. I loved trying all the new sauces here. I think the one I enjoyed the most was one of the bbq flavor ones.I also enjoyed how stacked their utensil area was, they are very well prepared. It's also all very clean too for a burger joint. Going in on the burger, it looked very messy to hold at first cause the patty and all was sticking out lol thank goodness for the knife and forks that they provide. The smashed patty was very flavorful, the hamburger bun was extremely soft, the melted cheese really brings out a lot of flavor, and their burger sauce all complements each other very well. Having to try all the sauces on the burger were all very nice too. The fries are on the slimmer side, but they're pretty solid and quite crispy. Enjoyable! Overall, experience was great here. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the burger.

Always looking for a good burger and this place didn't disappoint. Went in early on a Saturday and it was not too busy. It was clean and comfy. No frills but a few tv with all the sports playing. The counter server was very helpful and made great recommendations. The burger has a lot of meat and toppings so the bun was a little too small and doesn't really hold up but it is delicious! I will definitely go back when I am craving a good smash burger!

Solid smash burger. The classic hammer burger was everything you want out of a smash burger and did not disappoint. They have a big selection of sauces which was a nice addition to the meal. Cool spot near 4th street in downtown Santa Ana. And the service was great. Will be back again.

Ask the Community - Hammer Burger

I don't mean to be "that guy" but what oil are the fries cooked in?

    Does this location accept cash?

    Yes

    When is happy hour?

Tuesday - Friday, 2-5 PM. 20% off select food items, $2 off all alcohol.

Are the gluten free fries or sweet potato fries cooked in a dedicated fryer or same one the onion rings are cooked in?

Shoestring fries are cooked in a dedicated fryer and are gluten free and vegan. Sweet potato fries and onion rings are cooked in the same fryer together and are vegetarian. All meat products are cooked separately in their own fryer.

Are the chili cheese fries gluten free?

Our fries and chili are gluten free, but there is gluten in the beer cheese sauce because of the beer. Feel free to substitute American or shredded cheddar instead to make it gluten free.

    Any gluten free options?

Yes. We can make any burger or sandwich a lettuce wrap and our shoestring fries, sweet potato fries, and loaded fries are gluten free.

Are you dog friendly on the patio?

Unfortunately not. We do not have an outdoor patio so we can only allow service animals inside.

    Do you accept phone orders?

Not quite yet, but we’re working on rolling that out soon. Stay tuned!

Do you do private events and what's the minimum?

Yes we do. Minimum is $1250, or 100 people. All the information about catering, plus a way to contact us is on our website. www.hammerburger.com/catering

Can you get the burger without cheese? I can't do dairy. Thanks!

Yeah they'll make it however you want it. These burgers rock!!!

So is this place still arround?

Hi Roger. Thanks for your interest! Yes we are still around, though we don't actually have a physical location. Catch us at our next popup, Sat 6/20 4pm @ Asylum Brewing in Anaheim.

I came in with friends and ordered a pitcher along with several shots. The server, a young white male, brought the shots and only one cup of beer. I immediately told him I had ordered a pitcher, but he insisted I never said that -- even though I had already been charged. To avoid arguing, I told him to just bring a pitcher and charge me again respectfully. He refused and told me I would have to go back and wait in line if I wanted one. When I asked to speak with a manager, he said the manager was unavailable. We later noticed him walking around the patio taking pitcher requests from other customers and bringing them directly to their tables without sending them back in line. We politely asked again, and he said "okay," but repeatedly ignored us, walking past our table multiple times. When my friend followed up, he suddenly claimed he couldn't serve us and again told us to get back in line. There was no clear reason for the difference in treatment. Watching others get served while we were repeatedly refused, despite being respectful customers, made the situation feel discriminatory. As Latino customers in a predominantly Latino community, the behavior came across as biased and unacceptable. It's extremely disappointing because I've supported this place for nearly a decade and had never experienced anything like this before. Unfortunately, this interaction completely changed my view of this establishment. I would not recommend coming here if respectful and fair service matters to you.

I wanted to share some comprehensive feedback regarding a recent experience, aiming to highlight both your successes and areas where further refinement could elevate the customer journey even further. First and foremost, I must commend your team for their exceptional warmth and hospitality. From my initial phone call to the moment I picked up my order, I felt genuinely welcomed and valued. This level of customer service, which often feels lacking in many establishments today, truly sets American Grub apart. It creates a welcoming atmosphere that significantly enhances the overall experience, and I sincerely hope this commitment to friendliness remains a cornerstone of your operation. However, I encountered a couple of points that, in my personal opinion, warrant consideration for improvement. Regarding the payment process, I felt a degree of apprehension about providing my credit card details over the phone. While I understand the operational need to secure orders and prevent potential losses, particularly for larger transactions, for a single item like my bacon cheeseburger, priced at $17.24 including tax, this practice felt somewhat disproportionate. I also noted the 99-cent fee for online payments, which, while minor, might deter some customers who are seeking convenience without additional charges. Perhaps exploring alternative secure payment links for phone orders or adjusting the fee structure for smaller transactions could enhance customer comfort and streamline the process. My primary concern, however, arose upon returning home. Despite ordering a bacon cheeseburger, I discovered the burger completely lacked bacon, as well as any form of sauce or mayonnaise. This oversight had a significant impact on the meal; the absence of these core components rendered the burger quite bland and far from the experience I had anticipated. When ordering a single item, the expectation for meticulous attention to detail is particularly high, as there are fewer variables. Consequently, the overall value of the meal, given the missing ingredients, was not quite met on this occasion. I did reach out to the owner privately via email to discuss these points, and I appreciate their responsiveness and transparency in addressing my feedback, particularly concerning the rationale behind the phone payment policy. It is reassuring to know that your business is open to customer input. My hope is that these observations can serve as constructive input, allowing American Grub to continue refining its excellent service and product quality. I remain a supporter of your local endeavor and look forward to seeing these aspects addressed. Thank you for reaching out. To clarify, all my reviews and communications are crafted solely from my personal experiences and genuine perspectives, not AI. Every word and insight you read is authentically mine, driven by my commitment to provide honest feedback. Even though the review was long..(lol) I wanted to make sure the details are accurate and understandable. Plus I think you and your establishment are great and I wanted to detail that as well Kimberly.
