I met Larry at the Chico Home and Garden Show and within a month I had a beautiful, custom, extremely high quality cedar pergola in my backyard. The process was so easy and much more affordable than the bid I received from a local landscape company. When the contractor I hired to assemble the structure could not complete the pergola to my satisfaction, Larry came out, assessed the situation, and by that afternoon his crew finished the structure to perfection...with no additional costs. To be succinct our rating of SLH would range from one to five stars as there are so many components and facets at play- design, engineering, quality of materials, location (building site characteristics), logistics, costs, support, and unforeseen contingencies, it complicates a simple 'either/or' rating. That said, we now have a beautiful log home from SLH. However, we experienced numerous issues and challenges with all the above which made the overall experience both rewarding and frustrating. 'All's well that ends well' is how I can best characterize our two year construction experience from bare ground to finished home. Our highly experienced contractor familiar with log home construction had to make numerous adjustments to the plans that contained many mistakes in design and calculations that translated into many 'on the ground' re-dos. We understand that has been addressed and resolved (new draftsman). We chose a design that unknown to us apparently had not been perfected and encountered many related construction issues and, as a consequence, many cost overruns and negotiations with SLH to reconcile. In part our challenges included the lack of skilled subs and crew in El Dorado Country to provide dependable work, as well as working through two wet winters requiring many delays and lost days and weeks that were certainly beyond anyone's control, but the result was that some materials sat on site under tarps for lengthy periods. We chose Cedar which weathers well but some materials were substandard and bought from other sources than the mill in Chico. We had to return or 'trade out' a lot of it. Throughout this process Larry, Sherry, and their field rep, Hank, did their best to address the many issues that arose and to do so fairly and expeditiously. The process wasn't perfect but all of us had a shared goal and SHL is dedicated to 'making log home dreams' come true. The take away? Clear, unambiguous communication at every step is critical. Take detailed notes at every point of contact to avoid misunderstandings and address things that will fall through the cracks. Know what your plan says and be sure it matches your design criteria. Choose your 'package' carefully and go over every detail. Know what it will contain and what it won't. There are a lot of ancillary materials apart from the logs and framing in a package and they can be expensive! Create a construction plan and schedule in advance. Hire a knowledgeable, experienced general contractor and crew for the job. Log home construction is NOT the same as a conventional framed house! Insist on the best materials that SLH can provide and know where they are coming from if not from their mill. Visit SLH if possible. Larry or Hank will do an on-site visit and it's important that everyone be on the same page throughout. Educating yourself about log homes and all involved will help immensely. So, we are very happy with our SLH but it was a challenge getting here. read more

Contacted Sierra Log Homes a few weeks ago in order to get log home supplies for my 16 year old log home. Former tenant had trashed the property (to the tune of several tens of thousands of dollars) and hired a GC to fix issues. I was working 10-12 hour days myself to complete repairs (for the last 2 months). I also had an issue with a couple of bottom logs (siding) that had rotted from water hitting the deck. After playing phone tag several times, I finally spoke with the owner, Larry who was quite helpful initially. He said to email him pictures of the logs (siding) in question. I did this then nothing. So I called Larry the next week. Larry looks at his emails and discovers my email (red flags already). Larry suggested using an epoxy (to harden the wood) then shape the wood with a putty material instead of replacing the log siding. This sounded reasonable and Larry said I would be contacted by staff to place an order for caulking, log stain, and a 5 gallon lifeline exterior finish which could be shipped directly to my residence. Then I would travel to Chico to pick up the epoxy/putty and log stain remover. I needed to get these supplies asap as my contractor was finishing up his work otherwise the contractor would not have the materials to complete the work and would need to move on to other projects. After 3 more phone calls to Larry over 3 weeks, zilch! No return phone call by Sierra Log Homes. The woman who answered the call today said she was the wife who made excuse after excuse for why Larry or other staff could not call me (at least to advise they were overwhelmed with COVID-19, as all of are). After hearing this woman's excuses (no apologies, no "I am sorry so how can I help you"). I disconnected the call. I can not recommend this company. Terrible customer service. I will go elsewhere. If they are this way with me just to get supplies, just think of their customer service if you wanted to build a log home. read more

The stars speak for themselves. We bought a simple 20x40 cabin from Larry and Sherry and there isn't any way to describe how much support they have given us over the past year. Larry is a walking encyclopedia of information and his support isn't dependent on how much you spend. He came out to our site and trained our builder how to stack the logs, he is so thorough in his support it's really unreal. The best part of our house building was our relationship with this company. Run, don't walk to their door.....I can promise you will never regret it. A breath of fresh air, even after 25 years of business.. Our house is so quiet, cool in summer and warm in winter.
