Needed a place to eat and the girlfriend did not have any preferences. After deliberating between the same usual options, this place appeared in our google searches. With glowing reviews and a decently priced menu, this place was our spur-of-the-moment pick. We happened to arrive just after the lunch rush, so the place was maybe a 1/3 full. The server was swift and our two waiters were prompt and friendly. The space itself schemed in basic browns that made for a pretty generic atmosphere, although they made an interesting and aesthetic choice for their framed pictures. Overall, not much to look at although felt and looked like a comfortable cafe would and should. The food is where this place took us by complete surprise. We are used to paying 13-15$ (when we do decide to eat out) for the all-to-often trimmed and light portions, served on small plates, to disguise the fact you just overpaid for a slice of meat and maybe two vegetables, probably halved... I am usually very picky about my restaurant fish, as most places do not put much care in their seafood preparation to make a meal taste right, but the southern fried catfish was without a doubt the best in Denton. Nothing deeply unique about the dish, but the meat was fried to a perfect crumbly that made for a soft and delightfully crunchy chew with the fried layer. The taste was garnished with spices I could recognize but not identify, making for a fried catfish that had levels of flavor as I chewed. BEST PART? The Catfish engulfed the ENTIRE plate. As long as that stays the same, I will continue to come here. - The macaroni was about on par with other restaurants, not quite the delicious 'homemade' mac that would have mac lovers adding this to their list of favorites, but still enjoyable, served in a portion about the size of one cup. The fried pickles, although a biased favorite of mine, was absolutely top-notch and delicious. The second entree served to us was the chicken fried steak, which also swallowed the entire plate it was served on. Chewy and crunchy, in favor of the chewy. Mashed potatoes came on a small salad-sized plate and were nothing special, if not pretty bland. The gravy did help. Fried Brussels sprouts were delicious, although covered in a bit too much grease. TLDR: Catfish was supreme, the chicken fried steak was massive, and the sides ranged from eh-utterly divine. Definitely a place we will return to. read more

This restaurant was near where I was staying looked like homestyle food so I went in they weren't busy and it was about 6:30 pm. I stood there probably 15 minutes being ignored by staff finally someone said cami help you I said yes I'd like a table. Staff took me to a table and I waited for the waiter another 20 minutes. The service is great and the owners are involved in the day to day operations. They serve breakfast all day and they have a great selection to choose from. Arrived around 10am on a Saturday 9/18 with husband and grandma and we were seated right away. Our waiter was very nice and quick to make sure we had everything and anything we needed. Great service! The food was excellent! Our table ordered 2 combos and 1 skillet from the breakfast menu. We found nothing to complain about because all of our items were so tasty and super well made. Probably the best pancake I've ever had because of its perfect texture - fluffy and soft inside but a slight crisp on the outside and tasted so so good. Had a Saturday lunch here based on recommendations that their patty melt was good. It has a clean, somewhat plain interior with a side room that has a bar (and is labeled Bistro.) They had really tempting looking cakes and pies in a glass case, five types of fresh soups, an extensive menu, and serve beer and wine. I had the chorizo and egg plate which was very good, as were the corn tortillas and salsa. The beans topped with cheese like warm and just ok. The patty melt was just ok (not bad, but not great.)The onions weren't adequately cooked and were cut in strips, not chopped,so they were a bit hard to eat. There was a generous portion of chopped meat, but it had a slightly different taste than I expected. Service was OK. The place was not that busy, yet our server could've checked back more often-especially when my drink remained empty for longer than I would've liked. To be fair, I didn't try their fresh soups, salads, numerous breakfast items, or baked goods. All in all, just an average lunch experience. read more

Thanks to fellow Yelpers, I decided on this spot before heading out from Denton. This place is tucked on the backside of a shopping strip, plenty of parking. We had a group of 7 but were seated instantly. Our waitress came over and drinks were served fairly fast. Rather large menu, both breakfast and lunch items, but we all opted for breakfast. They had shades over the windows, so it appeared rather dark in there (shield your eyes on the way out!). I started off with a biscuit and gravy (as an appetizer, lol!). The biscuit wasn't too large, which I appreciate and the gravy was flavorful, but didn't have sausage in it/ For breakfast, I got the two eggs over easy, bacon, wheat toast and hash browns. Others had biscuits & gravy, the taco plate and migas! (FYI- for the biscuit and gravy, if you ordered sausage, it comes in the gravy, not on the side) Everything looked great and tasted good, but it didn't knock us off our feet. My hubby ordered a single tamale and it arrived but was already broken up inside, so it was basically just shredded pork. Just a nice, traditional, simple breakfast. Food was reasonably priced. Our waitress was amazing, (Believe her name was Kayla)- she was running back and forth, making sure drinks were full, getting us all the condiments we needed. She was able to split our bills for our group. I would come back here for the great service, but I doubt I will find myself craving the food. read more

Mapped out a 30 mile bike ride and needed a restaurant around the halfway point. Found Sidewalk Cafe on the map and off I went... Had a cheeseburger and fries that was spectacular. Great bun, thick patty with all the fixings and some great pickle slices on the side. Met the owner and we chatted for a bit about our bikes before he went back inside. They burned me once no problem I can forgive that understandable everyone has bad days. But I'm writing this on my way home from a horrible service. I ordered two entrées to go for myself and My Wife. They said 15 to 20 minutes so I arrived there 17 minutes later to find out no one put my order in so I have to wait another 20 min. No problem right, it's an inconvenience but I'll live. Then the ladies behind the counter are being smart asses and rude well paying full price that kind of customer service is unacceptable. We decided to try some place we've never been last time I was in Denton visiting my girlfriend and man am I glad we did. This place was really good. I ordered simple; just a chicken fried steak with mashed potato. My lady chose to get some breakfast for dinner options. All of our selections were so good. The cream gravy they served with the CFS was so creamy. I don't know if it's fresh or made from a mix and I don't really care. When it's that tasty, I don't bother asking and just enjoy it. The potatoes were also very well made. Smooth and delicious. My lady also enjoyed her choices very much. A pecan pancake, hash browns and eggs with some breakfast meats to go along with it. I sneaked a bite and agreed that they were very tasty. This would likely be a good choice at breakfast time, but was also a great choice at dinner. The service was sub-par, but the food made up for it. $1.38 for breakfast tacos. And, the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had in Denton (although I was discouraged by our waitress who didn't know how to pronounce it or what was in it). The hollandaise sauce was superb. We overheard an older gentleman saying he comes there at least a few times a week and that he loves the chicken tenders. Because it's a bistro, you'll likely find lots of proud grandparents there, and that brings a certain charm to it also. read more

What to say about sidewalk cafe is that it is GREAT ALL THE TIME! it is a very consistent place to eat and the prices are perfect. I would say that the Philly cheesesteak is the only bad thing I have ever had. But the salmon and chicken salad sandwich is the best thing on the menu. If you go in prepare to be there for a while before you get your food and the chances of your order getting lost is high since it's happened to me twice out of the 5 times I have eaten here.
