Went here at 12:25 pm on October 30. It was pretty full, but not more than a usual Sunday. There was a short wait. The hostess seemed to be having a bad day and was a little short with us and the people before us. We we sat at 12:38 and placed our order immediately. The food came out an hour and twenty minutes later. No communication about the delay from the owner or the server. The food was not well cooked, sort of burned and it was cold. One of our orders was wrong. The staff was still trying to close while people still didn't have their food. There were a lot of employees standing around while this was going on. To my other astonishment, the restaurant we've been coming to for more than a decade, served my wife oatmeal that was musty and tasted old. We both agreed it tasted, not just off, but mildly moldy. Our wonderful waiter, Andy, asked his manager if there was a chance to reduce the price of the of the oatmeal. The manager of the SIDEWALK CAFE said "absolutely not." We've had wonderful meals at the SIDEWALK CAFE, but today's oatmeal was almost revolting! We couldn't care less about the $6.69 price of the oatmeal, BUT IT IS A MATTER OF RESPECT FOR THE CUSTOMER. At age 76, we remember the old adage, "The customer is always right!" The service provided by Andy our service was exquisite. My meal was good. The oatmeal was inedible, almost rancid tasting. We will EVER COME BACK come back to the SIDEWALK CAFE; a restaurant we've been coming to for about a decade. I give the highest compliments to our server, Andy,! He was wonderful in every way, he always kept our coffee cups full, and tried to get the restaurant manager to do what is done in every restaurant in the world I've ever been when the food was unsatisfactory, which is not very often, take the cost of that portion of the dinner off the menu. I do know a bit about what I'm talking about since as a thirty-four (34) year international airline captain, and American combat veteran who has gone to war seventeen (17) times for America, I've been to 186 countries where I ate in restaurants and sidewalk food stalls. My wife, who has traveled (often by herself) to 110 (One hundred and ten countries) knows a lot about restaurants and their service too, almost never would comment about the quality of a meal that she found unacceptable, but not having the manager of the restaurant come and ask, "what was the matter with the food?" they ALWAYS exchange the meal for something that we did enjoy, I took the price of the meal off the bill. This spot does some things absolutely amazing and some things mediocre. First off, I think their club sandwich is the biggest, best that I have ever had. I always order it with fried pickles and it is an incredible meal. My boyfriend on the other hand always orders and loves the chicken strips. He usually makes a chicken sandwich the next day with leftovers because the serving size is awe worthy. The breakfast that I have had here is pretty standard, the broiled chopped steak pretty good as well, but one dish that I was not a fan of was the fried catfish. Overall, I was disappointed in our experience. The food is good, but nothing special. The server was friendly. The biggest disappointment was the food wait time. It took about 45 minutes to receive our food after ordering. The restaurant looks old, outdated and feels dirty. You would think for a family owned with plenty of servers there you would be helped. We just walked out and I don't think anyone noticed we left. This place does NOT disappoint. They offer many healthy breakfast and brunch type entrees. As well as many specialty beverages to customize or pick an already designed flavor burst. OMG! We have been staying in the hotel behind this cafe since January 2. This past weekend we finally got a chance to go there. I just love it. They have a menu that they will serve you all day, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. The menu is diverse enough to serve gluten free, keto and low calorie needs. I personally had the Rueben sandwich with any side, I choose Brussel sprouts. They were nice and charred, yummy I ate them all before getting to the sandwich. My MOM(my old man) had Chicken fried steak with 2 large pancakes, hash browns, 2 eggs. We both could have had that and be stuffed. Portions are very large. I've heard several customers ask for to go containers before they even get the meal on table. My keto meal was a delicious catfish with brussel sprouts, and a salad. UPDATE: My wife and I visited twice this week for lunch and both times we had a very unusual bad experience. Usually the service is fantastic. These two visits we were served by the same person and we felt ignored. She did not come to our table to check on us or even stop as she walked right by. Both visits we waited 30 minutes for our food (wasn't busy at lunch time) and I had to go ask another server to check on our food which was ready but not picked up by our server. Unfortunately, the soup was lukewarm both times which was a disappointment on such a cold day. Both visits I had to get up and go ask at the counter for drink refills as my server stood there and observed me without reaction. Even more discouraging is that I have messaged the owners/managers several times and I have zero acknowledgement. I would be happy to chalk up the bad experiences to just random bad luck but instead I have to wonder if if customer experience is not a priority. read more

My dad had the fried catfish, he gave me a bite and it's probably the best I've had. It was two big filets, nice and crispy. I had the #2 (pancake, egg, turkey sausage, and hashbrowns). Everything was good but the eggs and pancake were reallyyyyy good. Really nice waitress too, wish I remembered her name to brag on her (thin girl, brown hair). Needed a place to eat and the girlfriend did not have any preferences. After deliberating between the same usual options, this place appeared in our google searches. With glowing reviews and a decently priced menu, this place was our spur-of-the-moment pick. We happened to arrive just after the lunch rush, so the place was maybe a 1/3 full. The server was swift and our two waiters were prompt and friendly. The space itself schemed in basic browns that made for a pretty generic atmosphere, although they made an interesting and aesthetic choice for their framed pictures. Overall, not much to look at although felt and looked like a comfortable cafe would and should. The food is where this place took us by complete surprise. We are used to paying 13-15$ (when we do decide to eat out) for the all-to-often trimmed and light portions, served on small plates, to disguise the fact you just overpaid for a slice of meat and maybe two vegetables, probably halved... I am usually very picky about my restaurant fish, as most places do not put much care in their seafood preparation to make a meal taste right, but the southern fried catfish was without a doubt the best in Denton. Nothing deeply unique about the dish, but the meat was fried to a perfect crumbly that made for a soft and delightfully crunchy chew with the fried layer. The taste was garnished with spices I could recognize but not identify, making for a fried catfish that had levels of flavor as I chewed. BEST PART? The Catfish engulfed the ENTIRE plate. As long as that stays the same, I will continue to come here. - The macaroni was about on par with other restaurants, not quite the delicious 'homemade' mac that would have mac lovers adding this to their list of favorites, but still enjoyable, served in a portion about the size of one cup. The fried pickles, although a biased favorite of mine, was absolutely top-notch and delicious. The second entree served to us was the chicken fried steak, which also swallowed the entire plate it was served on. Chewy and crunchy, in favor of the chewy. Mashed potatoes came on a small salad-sized plate and were nothing special, if not pretty bland. The gravy did help. Fried Brussels sprouts were delicious, although covered in a bit too much grease. TLDR: Catfish was supreme, the chicken fried steak was massive, and the sides ranged from eh-utterly divine. Definitely a place we will return to. read more
