Have been going to Shortys since they opened but am seeing a decline in service and food. The majority of servers have been swapped out. They just quit which says a lot about management. Now the vibe isnt the same. The friendly faces have been replaced with almost robotic servers who are just there with no real interaction with the customer. The typical 60s music that plays throughout was down for over a week. The food was slow and off. I asked for something to be removed and it was ignored (still in it). I ended up sending it back and it returned the same way AGAIN. I gave up asking. I will try one more time before I finally move on to another diner. I recommend either get better or I refuse to spend my money with ANY Shortys restaurant again. read more

Classic diner vibes. If you're looking for an elevated dining experience, this isn't the place for you. There are plenty of fancy brunch places in Richmond. Shortys is a casual eatery to enjoy hearty, greasy food and good conversation with a friend. Great prices and the food comes out fairly quick. I recommend the corned beef hash. I have a lot of food allergies and they've always gotten it right. In my experience, service is good the majority of the time. If they're a little slow you can just go find your server or someone else, they don't mind. It's pretty small and friendly. read more

Breakfast at Shorty's is always a great idea, always greeted with a warm smile and friendly environment. I typically order to go and I haven't ordered anything here that I didn't like. The first time I got the corned beef hash breakfast. And recently I ordered bacon and eggs with a side of cheese grits, the southern girl in me couldn't wait to try their cheese grits but unfortunately most of it spilled out in the bag. I would definitely suggest they try better packaging so the food doesn't melt through the styrofoam. What I could salvage was still a great addition to my breakfast and of course didn't disappoint. Better "To-Go"packaging pleassssee! read more

SLOW! Took more than 30 minutes to receive simple dishes. Waitstaff said "Sorry, we got slammed with a bunch of DoorDash orders." So apparently, they take priority over customers who have been sitting and waiting. Food was so-so. read more

We sat 15 minutes without being acknowledged while the table RIGHT NEXT TO US -- seated after us -- had drink orders taken and delivered, and their food order taken. The restaurant was less than half full. When we finally spoke up, the manager said we should have "flagged someone down." No. Your customers should not have to hunt down staff for service. Tables get missed. Good managers apologize and fix it. They don't blame the customer. The missed table was irritating. The manager's response earned the review. read more

Last review I gave the service a well-deserved meh. I have to say that on my most recent visit I was one of 13 men (several hard of hearing) and the meals came out very well cooked, accurate, hot, and timely. Carli was our server and she was so very patient and attentive and made sure everyone had drinks at all times. She checked back on everyone's meals several times. I could not have asked for a better server -- she took on the challenge of a large group by herself and was flawless. Kudos! (Note to manager -- next time maybe pull a third table up for a party of 13? Thanks.) read more

Oh how the mighty have fallen. I do not know what happened to the help, but when you have seating for 50 or 60 you can not just have 2 servers. Someone has changed what used to be a great place to eat into a disaster. Now the norm is long wait times and cold coffee, and the servers are over worked and they are in constant state of panic and are over worked my advice go some where else. read more

This place is nothing to go on about. It's a very average diner experience. The food is like old style Denny's or Waffle House. Like it's pre-made and came off a truck in a box rather than made fresh with fresh ingredients. The reviews were really good, and I came here based upon the reviews. I feel misled. The service was professional and prompt, but the food is lower level. I asked for medium scrambled eggs, meaning I don't want them runny and I don't want them hard. They came hard. I told the waitress they were hard and she just stood there like, "What do you want me to do?" So, not only was the quality not good, you don't get "made to order" (even though telling the cook how you want your eggs isn't special. Doesn't everyone do that with every order of eggs?) read more

Shorty's Diner never misses. They always deliver when it comes to pancakes... fluffy every time. The bacon is spot-on, the coffee is great and keeps coming, and the service is quick without ever feeling rushed. Classic, reliable diner you can count on whether you're grabbing a fast breakfast or settling in for a comfort-food kind of morning. read more

Another perfectly nice brunch at Shorty's (see previous review). I realized I'm such a creature of habit and order the same breakfast when I come here, but they always get my eggs just right. Service was prompt, love the 50's feel and music. My friend got the club which looked yummy and I sneaked one of her cheesy fries with bacon bits and they were ok, a tad soggy but flavorful. They had some nice outdoor seating which was inviting on this spring day in the 70's! read more

Outstanding breakfast menu, and the best hash browns out there. But the greatest asset is the pleasant staff, especially Ashley and Justin. I guess I can say that I am one of Ashley's regulars. I am impressed with how she keeps the place running smoothly, and with a smile. She is constantly moving around, either attending to customers or cleaning the windows or doing anything that needs to be done. She knows my name, remembers what I like to order, and regularly checks to see if my coffee cup is filled. When I leave I always get a goodbye from not just Ashley but Justin and basically the entire staff as well. This is like a family atmosphere, and exactly why I travel from Chesterfield to come to Shorty's! Kudos! Rob J. read more

Pleasant staff. At best mediocre food. Rock hard dry biscuit. Underwhelming hash browns. Never got my drink refilled.

Always an amazing breakfast!! A true diner feel tucked into a shopping complex near willow lawn. The service is quick, staff is friendly and the food is solid! read more

Asked the waitress if the eggs Benedict was good, she replied, a lot of people order it..!! That doesn't mean it's good, just means a lot of people have made a mistake. The muffin was soggy, taste was sub par and the hash browns were barely warmed much less browned. The milk was lukewarm! Maybe try something else but for this meal I would pass.... read more

To say this place is going down hill would be an understatement. They had some very friendly and hardworking servers, one who had the nerve to have a serious medical condition. Instead of being accommodated she was terminated The vibe of this place has changed and they are cutting corners in every way and the morale of the servers is low due to wondering who is next. I have been coming here for many years but no more. I cannot tolerate places that cut corners at the expense of customers and employees. Shame on you! read more

Sunday December 3 1:24 pm Came here for breakfast and ended up ordering lunch once I saw they had a Ruben sandwich. The hostess seated me almost immediately. The waitress was nice and took my order quick as well. Definitely a diner type atmosphere, family environment. There was a decent crowd when I came in, almost all the tables were full. The menu says the french fries are hand cut, usually I can tell, but I couldn't but regardless they are good. The Ruben is also very good! I didn't visit the bathroom, but I'm pleased with the experience. I'll definitely return for another Reuben and to try breakfast. read more

I love a good ol' fashion diner. The atmosphere is what you would expect, loud conversations, everybody rushing from point A to point B, the owner walking around talking to regulars, the aroma of delicious coming from all over. It's a welcoming chaos. A friend had recommended this place. He has been coming here every week and we decided to stop by after Cars and Coffee. Man in my mind I knew what I was craving going in but when I stepped inside, all the delicious smells made me second guess myself. Thankfully I was able to eat a little bit of everything....and let me tell you -- damn was that good. read more

Conveniently located from my office, I've tried several items from both the breakfast and lunch menu and have never been disappointed. The food and service is always great and at a reasonable price, Shorty's is on my list of places to go for breakfast and lunch. read more

Waitresses are friendly, menu is large and the portions generous for those weekend mornings when you've got a big appetite. Memorable place.

On the website, it says, "It's not fancy... it's not fat free... it's just the way it used to be!!" Needless to say, it absolutely delivered. There are a lot of tasty options to pick from. The food comes out in a timely manner and does the job it needs to do. The service is excellent; our waitress was very kind. read more

My review is based on just one item, so it's not a judgment of all the food. I ordered a strawberry cheesecake pancake. It was tasty, but heavy. If you like your pancakes light and fluffy, these are not for you. It had the consistency of heavy wet plaster, yet was tasty. I only ordered one pancake and could not finish it. Coffee was a bit weak. read more

This was a surprise find! We originally were going to get something at Einstein's but when we went in there was no indoor seating... So no patronage from me. We walked down the mall to Shortys and boy I am glad! It was so good! The service was good and the food was really good. I had an egg and bacon burito and my wife had a breakfast sandwich and a chocolate chip pancake! Definitely a good breakfast stop! Large menu, plenty of parking, reasonable prices and friendly staff. A laid back simple diner with no fuss or muss! The staff is always friendly and there's always a place to sit down quickly. The food comes out hot and fast. We come here for breakfast about a couple times a month. Lots of different options- one being the pancakes, which are way too big-2 head-size stack enough to feed three people. This place does not disappoint! read more

This food was delicious. Would i go back? Yes. That Monte cristo sandwich has some type of strawberry mayo which was NOT for me... but i got it without it and it was delicious. I ordered cheese grits but the waitress forgot them... but it was okay... i was a little full anyway... My friend said the omelet and pancake was very good and that she wants to go back.... So I'm sure we will. It was a cute diner read more

What a great little diner. The place has a fun vibe! The menu is a little different from the average brunch restaurant ...it is BETTER THAN MOST! Yes I would definitely recommend Shortys. The first time I ate there was the original Shorty's in Williamsburg Va. I love the Shortys breakfast sampler. The staff are very nice. read more

This was our first visit to Shorty's. We were seated pretty quickly. To get to it. Sausage gravy probably was the best thing that we had. The pancakes are huge - however extremely thick so it takes away from the enjoyment of the pancakes. My hash browns tasted as if they were overcooked - but put on the plate first so they were not hot by the time they came to the table. The side of sausage I had seemed overcooked - I believe it could have been better if it wasn't. The eggs were great once corrected - first order was without cheese when we ordered cheese. Overall, I believe I would give Shorty's another chance. Just to figure out if this was a bad day or if it is always this way read more

Good breakfast place! Good food! Service was outstanding! The waiter is extremely nice and helpful. I will definitely be going back!

I really wanted to like Shorty's, having a go-to place within a short drive would be good. We decided on breakfast which is a low bar for any restaurant to do well. I was wrong. First, the coffee was terrible. It has an odd flavor/aftertaste I couldn't place. I'd have preferred Folgers in a can over this. I ordered a Western omelette. It was void of any flavor so I had to add ketchup on top of the salsa I requested. The hash browns came out cold and dry, too. Usually there is one redeeming aspect of any restaurant, oddly I've found that to be the coffee. But not Shorty's. I don't know if I'll try it again. Certainly not any time soon. PS The service was great, no complaints there and I do like the decor. but neither makes up for the food quantity. read more

Our server was very efficient. Gave us more time to review the menu and came back in a timely manner. I ordered the vegetable omelet with hash browns and white toast. I enjoyed my meal very much. One change I would make to the vegetable omelet. I would prefer red peppers to the green peppers. Spouse got the patty melt. He enjoyed it but felt he had had better. He finished with the cherry pie it was quite good. Sorry I didn't think to have him add ice cream. read more

Shorty's is one of my family's favorite places to go to in Richmond. My favorite day is Thursdays because the special of the day is meatloaf and it's super good. Some of my other favorites are: Grilled cheese, fries and I always get gravy for my fries. The Italian sub - one of the best anywhere! My husband loves the breakfast foods, which they serve anytime. Additionally we have always experienced great service. The hosts and servers are genuinely friendly and helpful people. We will go back again and again. read more

My fiancé and I went here for brunch. Our hostess was nice and allowed us to sit at a booth when we requested it. Our waitress was very sweet but didn't know which meats were considered "pork". She suggested I order ham... Since they didn't have many non-pork options for breakfast meats (aside from corned beef hash and country fried steak), SO I ordered pancakes and a side of hash browns. The pancakes were huge; they were flapjacks! Not much blueberry cake on top but the waitress accommodated me. I requested no powdered sugar or butter. The pancake was a little tough but overall good. My fiancé didn't have that great of an experience. There was dried up food on his silverware. And he had to have his food remade because there was hair in his country fried steak. They took 40% off his meal but he had lost his appetite and took most of it to-go... read more

Food was okay, not exceptional , but ok. However the patty sausage was so hard and over cooked you had to use a knife to cut it, was obviously cooked the day or so before and reused for today. Tables too close together, hardly any room to move or keep from getting run into by other persons or wait staff. Service was good and waitress was attentive and very pleasant, food came out fairly quickly. Some improvement could be used, overall good, but not great. read more

Carli was my server and she was super nice very attentive great smile... On the menu at says a large portion of corn beef hash(not really) crispy on the outside soft on the inside it also comes with three eggs and toast... It would be nice to have an option of one egg or two. The food was good. I feel like it's a little bit pricey, but I would go again... FYI they have lunch specials...today was fried chicken livers with green beans and another vegetable..... now I know everyone doesn't eat chicken livers but I do and I wish I had known lol I would've came for lunch read more

Shortys Diner is a personal favorite of mine. Located in a strip mall, the is a hole-in-the-wall diner. There is plenty of parking but there is not much standing room once you enter. You place your name at the hostess and wait to be seated. There are booths, tables, and counter seating. The ambiance is very much a country diner. It's not an Instagram aesthetic, it's a Local favorite with reliable food and service. There are plenty of menu options for a party comprised of all flavor profiles and pickiness. If you're going to Shortys, you have to get breakfast. All the menu items were a generous portion, perfect for a morning brunch spot. A singular pancake is huge and can easily be shared by 2-3 people. All the food was very flavorful. Sometimes with a diner food, it can be a hit or miss with Flavors and seasoning. At shortys however, I did not experience that problem. I walked away from that breakfast, very full, satisfied, and would come again for more!. If you're around and want some good home style breakfast, come to Shortys! read more
