Last review I gave the service a well-deserved meh. I have to say that on my most recent visit I was one of 13 men (several hard of hearing) and the meals came out very well cooked, accurate, hot, and timely. Carli was our server and she was so very patient and attentive and made sure everyone had drinks at all times. She checked back on everyone's meals several times. I could not have asked for a better server -- she took on the challenge of a large group by herself and was flawless. Kudos! This place is nothing to go on about. It's a very average diner experience. The food is like old style Denny's or Waffle House. Like it's pre-made and came off a truck in a box rather than made fresh with fresh ingredients. The reviews were really good, and I came here based upon the reviews. I feel misled. The service was professional and prompt, but the food is lower level. I asked for medium scrambled eggs, meaning I don't want them runny and I don't want them hard. They came hard. I told the waitress they were hard and she just stood there like, "What do you want me to do?" So, not only was the quality not good, you don't get "made to order" (even though telling the cook how you want your eggs isn't special. Doesn't everyone do that with every order of eggs?) read more

Another perfectly nice brunch at Shorty's (see previous review). I realized I'm such a creature of habit and order the same breakfast when I come here, but they always get my eggs just right. Service was prompt, love the 50's feel and music. My friend got the club which looked yummy and I sneaked one of her cheesy fries with bacon bits and they were ok, a tad soggy but flavorful. I love a good ol' fashion diner. The atmosphere is what you would expect, loud conversations, everybody rushing from point A to point B, the owner walking around talking to regulars, the aroma of delicious coming from all over. It's a welcoming chaos. A friend had recommended this place. He has been coming here every week and we decided to stop by after Cars and Coffee. Sunday December 3 1:24 pm Came here for breakfast and ended up ordering lunch once I saw they had a Ruben sandwich. The hostess seated me almost immediately. The waitress was nice and took my order quick as well. Definitely a diner type atmosphere, family environment. There was a decent crowd when I came in, almost all the tables were full. The menu says the french fries are hand cut, usually I can tell, but I couldn't but regardless they are good. The Ruben is also very good! I didn't visit the bathroom, but I'm pleased with the experience. I'll definitely return for another Reuben and to try breakfast. read more

If you like your pancakes light and fluffy, these are not for you. It had the consistency of heavy wet plaster, yet was tasty. I only ordered one pancake and could not finish it. This was a surprise find! We originally were going to get something at Einstein's but when we went in there was no indoor seating... So no patronage from me. We walked down the mall to Shortys and boy I am glad! It was so good! The service was good and the food was really good. I had an egg and bacon burito and my wife had a breakfast sandwich and a chocolate chip pancake! Definitely a good breakfast stop! Large menu, plenty of parking, reasonable prices and friendly staff. I really wanted to like Shorty's, having a go-to place within a short drive would be good. We decided on breakfast which is a low bar for any restaurant to do well. I was wrong. First, the coffee was terrible. It has an odd flavor/aftertaste I couldn't place. I'd have preferred Folgers in a can over this. I ordered a Western omelette. It was void of any flavor so I had to add ketchup on top of the salsa I requested. The hash browns came out cold and dry, too. Usually there is one redeeming aspect of any restaurant, oddly I've found that to be the coffee. But not Shorty's. I don't know if I'll try it again. Certainly not any time soon. Shorty's is one of my family's favorite places to go to in Richmond. My favorite day is Thursdays because the special of the day is meatloaf and it's super good. Some of my other favorites are: Grilled cheese, fries and I always get gravy for my fries. The Italian sub - one of the best anywhere! My husband loves the breakfast foods, which they serve anytime. Food was okay, not exceptional , but ok. However the patty sausage was so hard and over cooked you had to use a knife to cut it, was obviously cooked the day or so before and reused for today. Tables too close together, hardly any room to move or keep from getting run into by other persons or wait staff. This was our first visit to Shorty's. We were seated pretty quickly. To get to it. Sausage gravy probably was the best thing that we had. The pancakes are huge - however extremely thick so it takes away from the enjoyment of the pancakes. My hash browns tasted as if they were overcooked - but put on the plate first so they were not hot by the time they came to the table. The side of sausage I had seemed overcooked - I believe it could have been better if it wasn't. The eggs were great once corrected - first order was without cheese when we ordered cheese. Our server was very efficient. Gave us more time to review the menu and came back in a timely manner. I ordered the vegetable omelet with hash browns and white toast. I enjoyed my meal very much. One change I would make to the vegetable omelet. I would prefer red peppers to the green peppers. Spouse got the patty melt. He enjoyed it but felt he had had better. My fiancé and I went here for brunch. Our hostess was nice and allowed us to sit at a booth when we requested it. Our waitress was very sweet but didn't know which meats were considered "pork". She suggested I order ham... Since they didn't have many non-pork options for breakfast meats (aside from corned beef hash and country fried steak), SO I ordered pancakes and a side of hash browns. The pancakes were huge; they were flapjacks! Not much blueberry cake on top but the waitress accommodated me. I requested no powdered sugar or butter. The pancake was a little tough but overall good. My fiancé didn't have that great of an experience. There was dried up food on his silverware. And he had to have his food remade because there was hair in his country fried steak. On the menu at says a large portion of corn beef hash(not really) crispy on the outside soft on the inside it also comes with three eggs and toast... Shortys Diner is a personal favorite of mine. Located in a strip mall, the is a hole-in-the-wall diner. There is plenty of parking but there is not much standing room once you enter. You place your name at the hostess and wait to be seated. There are booths, tables, and counter seating. The ambiance is very much a country diner. It's not an Instagram aesthetic, it's a Local favorite with reliable food and service. There are plenty of menu options for a party comprised of all flavor profiles and pickiness. If you're going to Shortys, you have to get breakfast. All the menu items were a generous portion, perfect for a morning brunch spot. A singular pancake is huge and can easily be shared by 2-3 people. All the food was very flavorful. Sometimes with a diner food, it can be a hit or miss with Flavors and seasoning. At shortys however, I did not experience that problem. I walked away from that breakfast, very full, satisfied, and would come again for more!. This little gem nestled on Broad is conveniently located in the Libbie Place Shopping Center (which, for whatever bizarre reason, the developers thought it a fabulous idea to NOT Have the establishments face the street to which their address locates them) and a great pit stop as one commutes into work in and around the area. As a native Houstonian who always loves a diner when he travels, I sought something near where I was to be noticeably ensconced for a few days, and this fit the bill. No pretense, very simple, easy in-easy out type of friendly diner. I have only had breakfast, and while not what I would call "blow your taste buds away" greatness of breakfast fare, it does the job. And is that not what we want in our diner? To have friendly, fun, simple service, good coffee, and a positive attitude and food that fills you up so you can move about your day with the fuel you need to slay the capitalist dragon. They could use some work on the pancakes (a tad bit too dry) though otherwise, everything is quite on point.
