The math works for me. If Value = Outcome/Cost, the numerator was high (nicely shaped brows and a cleaner result for upper lip than waxing) and the denominator was relatively low (especially with the membership packages + Yelp deal). Let's explore the cost. I'd bought the Yelp deal $10 for $15 with the original intent of doing eyebrow + lip which costs $15 + $10, respectively. I would've paid in reality $20 for that in total by using Yelp deal. Not that cheap. At the recommendation of other Yelpers I asked about the memberships and went for the 6 "eyebrow+lip in 1 year" membership which would normally cost $95 (it also confers 50% off their waxing services). And yes, they only honor $10 off of membership cost instead of $15 off for using the yelp deal BUT THEN THE THREADING SERVICES I CAME IN FOR THAT DAY WERE FREE. That's a $25 value absolutely free! So essentially I paid $95 ($85 in-salon + $10 already from Yelp) for 7 "eyebrow+lip in 1 year" which means I will average ~$13.6/session. I'm used to paying $10 just for brow in LA and thinking that was cheap. So yes, it's not exactly clear in their Yelp Deal terms that you can't apply that $15 toward memberships. But get this, IF they'd straight up honored it and taken $15 off the $95 (WITHOUT the free session) I would be paying in reality $90 ($80 in-salon + $10 already paid for Yelp deal) for 6 sessions which comes out to $15/session. In sum, that $10 yelp deal buys you a free threading session if you buy their membership. That can be better than 5 free dollars. May the math be forever in your favor. Parking is meh (U district: where a quarter gets you 6 minutes) but they're so efficient you shouldn't spend more than 75 cents for street parking if all you're doing is threading. Parking is way easier on Brooklyn Ave rather than University Ave. The aestheticians are professional, fast, and no-frills. Some people find this cold; I found it great-- no upselling, no pushing random skin products, no time wasted. And apparently 3 locations to choose from (Edmonds, Udistrict, and Capitol Hill). read more

Loved loved this experience! I needed to get a quick threading job on my cheeks so I thought I'd try my luck with this place. I had a hard time finding the salon itself. Its located above some other shop/store so you need to take the stairs up to find the salon. The salon is small but definitely clean. The lady there (I believe it was Sujana) was nice and patient. I watched her thread two other ladies before she got to me. She was polite and listened to exactly what I wanted. I've been threaded before and it was incredibly painful, but this didn't hurt at all. Sujana finished by putting some aloe vera on my face -my face wasn't red and puffy at all! THe best part of this experience is the price $$. I got 6 sessions for $40!!! That's less than $7 for me to get threaded. I loved that Sujana was so sweet about discounting the price - the deal they had was for both cheeks and eyebrows but I only wanted the cheeks so she gave me a good price. The membership card is the best thing there is! I highly recommend this place - go go go! Also a plus, I was afraid parking on the Ave was going to be difficult but I found a spot on Brooklyn and it only cost me $1 for about 45 minutes. The only thing that confused me is when I called the place the phone was answered with a simple "Hello" (not "hello this is Shanti Threading Salon") so I thought I had the wrong number. Checked this place out due to a recommendation from a friend. Didnt really know what to expect with threading, as I have been waxing for years. I was instantly converted! The two ladies that work there are super nice and got me right in. The threading itself was painless and created a beautiful arch that I have only been able to get once in a blue moon from waxing. The best part is that you can walk out of there and continue to stay out in public because the redness and irritation that comes with waxing is non-existent with threading. I definitely recommend getting their member card for $30. Its good for unlimited waxing for a few months and brings the price down to about $4 a visit. Best deal in town! read more

I use to get my eyebrows waxed until my favorite salon, Helle, closed. Lady friends of mine suggested I try threading and I came upon Shanti. They're alittle intimidating to find at first. Just look for the street signs and the comic book shop on 45th and you're in the right place. They've never been busy the 3 times I've visited. There's usually 1 -2 gals working at a time and they're super friendly. They listen when I explain how I'd like my brows done. Yes, threading does hurt. I'd say more so than waxing, but it's so much cleaner and thorough! You don't have to worry about someone "double dipping" since there's no dipping to be done, lol. I've had my brows, mustache and chin area done. I haven't bought into their package deal that they offer because I only go once every 3 months, but It sounds like a good deal. I've been in here before with a friend and waited while she was getting her eyebrows done. Came back another time to get some services done. The lady was not friendly and not personable. She was actually quite rude when I was asking questions that I was like screw it. They over charge for no reason. I'll just continue to go to my regular place even though it's out of the way. I went in for the first time to get my eyebrows threaded because I have acne prone skin, and waxing always leaves me with whiteheads and irritation. The woman who helped me was extremely friendly, but the reason I'm giving my experience two stars is because I'm so upset about my eyebrow shape. She asked me what I wanted, and I said, " I want to keep the thickness of my brows. I just need them shaped." Her response was, " I'm going to have to trim your eyebrows, and I'll try to keep the thickness." I was ok with that thinking she understood what I meant. She did the first eyebrow, and was really nice, and showed me the shape after she was done. I said I liked it, but I really didn't. What are you supposed to do once your eyebrow shape is completely different, and the only way to get it back now is growing it back? She did not keep my thickness. She threaded right through it, and gave me a whole new shape that I'm not comfortable with. Like I said, extremely friendly service- just didn't get what I wanted and now I have to grow back my brows which I didn't want to do, and I hate this rounded arch. read more

After she finished, she gave me the mirror to look at myself, I was horrified. My eyebrows were pencil thin. You had no idea how mad I was. So I told her, I wanted it thick and no shape. In response, she told me "I threaded it according to your face shape". Well, THANK YOU!!!! I'm at turns very pleased and then very displeased with the results from this salon. I brought my daughter and myself in for brow threading today. I clarified I wanted to keep the natural thickness of my brows and she did a fine job. Loved it. I've been growing them out for several weeks in an effort to get the desired effect since I find if I go every two-three weeks my brows get thinner and thinner in spite of me telling them to keep them thick. On to my daughter's experience: I told the woman she's my daughter, she's 13, and I wanted a cleanup and keep them very natural as she has very think brows. No 13 year old needs to walk around looking like she's trying to be years older. The woman changed the shape of her lovely brows entirely, took too much off the bottom and thinned them out dramatically. They are no longer attention grabbing for their fullness and beautiful natural arched shape, but for a more distinct, womanly shape. I don't know how else to describe it. I complained to the woman and pointed out exactly what she'd done wrong and she denied it, saying she'd only cleaned up. I showed her a picture of my daughter's previous brow thread session to show the difference. She claimed it wasn't different when it clearly is, and I told her so. Then she blamed my daughter saying she'd asked her to clean off the bottom. I told her that I'd already given her guidelines to work within and that as I'm her parent and she's 13 that it's my call. I wish there was an option of zero star for this place. Not only is the owner rude and obnoxious they inflict so much pain. The reason for my bad review however is not their lack of skill but the lack of professionalism. I had a membership where I could go three times and the owner said since I had only been for eyebrow threading once and not been able to use my member ship in the allotted time she would honor it and let me have the full value of my membership. Next time I went in there she refused to keep her word and wanted to charge me $65 again. Another time I went to buy a mehendi cone and her staff told me it was $7 and when the owner heard her she spoke over her and said it was $10. I just want to say there are other much much better places out there for getting your eye brows done and my experience here has always been terrible. read more

This place is awful. I came in for threading a few times. They did an okay job in the beginning. But as of recent my eyebrows always came out looking uneven. I would give two starts if I was rating just their threading abilities. The one star is for arm waxing. I went in to get my arms done, and I left with BRUISES. The next day, my arms looked even worse then when I had left. Deep purple and blue bruises all along my upper arms and around my elbows. This was a while back, and I'm just posting the review now. I wanted to totally forget about the experience because it was so bad, but I figured others have right to know. I wish I had taken a picture. My arms honestly looked like I'd been beat up. My mom actually thought that's what happened when she saw my arms. It took WEEKS for all the bruises to disappear completely. The girls who did the job had absolutely no idea how to properly wax someone. They applied wax to the entire length of my arm, and in the time it took to do this the wax was allowed to cool. Because it had cooled, it hurt like hell to rip it off. They also had someone else who was coming in right after me, and were rushing to get the job done. When I was paying for the service afterwards, the girl that had done my waxing, even had the nerve to ask for a tip in a very pointed manner. I've never before been to a place where they asked for a gratuity like that. To be honest, I think I should have refused to pay for this service in the first place, because it was so bad. The only positive that came from this experience, is because it was so incredibly painful, other more professional places I've been to don't seem to hurt at all. It upped my pain tolerance. Advice to anyone who's thinking of going here to save money: Don't do it. Pay a bit more for a more professional service and take care of yourself. read more

Here's the deal: I've been going to this place since BEFORE they moved into their fancier location on the Ave - that's how loyal I've been to them ever since they opened up in U-District. Loyalty, unfortunately, has no value to them. I don't know if it's because I'm Indian, because (no racial discrimination intended, just mere observation) Caucasian girls always seem to be given the faster, more efficient and more experienced beautician. I on the other hand, have unfalteringly been shafted with the newest beautician in the house, every. Single. Time. And I think it's fair to say I'm sick of it! I put up with it all this while, but here's what crossed the line: Today I go in to find that both the experienced girl and this brand new girl that I've never seen before are free. Of course, the experienced girl motions for the new girl to take me as she walks towards this white girl who walked in AFTER me (I kid you not - again, just mere, factual observations). New girl starts working on my eyebrows and I can already tell this is going to take a while. Meanwhile, customers come and go in the chair next to me. New girl motions for the manager to come over and help her with something. Is this not a plain indication that she's not ready to operate on customers just yet? Manager comes over and starts smearing her hands all over my face as they talk in a language I can't understand (always annoying). To add to all of it, her hands and breath smell like food! Disgusting. I ran home immediately afterwards to scrub my face. After about FORTY minutes at the salon, I stand up only to feel the most uncomfortable pains in my back, neck and shoulder - yet, not a single apology from anyone there for how long it's taking. New girl had problems ringing me up too and all in all, I was just furiously disappointed as I left. The actual quality of the product? I went in today for a last-minute eyebrow threading, and was pleasantly surprised to hear they take walk-in's. I got a yelp deal, $10 for $15, which was a good price. I told the stylist what I wanted, a clean up and to even out the thickness, and she delivered quickly and also gave advice on keeping some hairs I wasn't sure about (I wanted to keep the eyebrows thick). Overall service was convenient, fast, and well-priced, and the staff was pleasant and professional. I recommend this place if you're on the fence about threading. I've been here a number of times and I can't say I'm super impressed. It might just be that I never connected with one threader, but I found the quality to be inconsistent. My brows tended to grow back really quickly, compared with other places I've gone and while they looked good... they didn't look great. Now that my membership is up, I'm out looking agin for a new place to do my brows. I do want to note, I've never had to wait very long for someone, although I've usually gone around noon on a weekday. read more
