Terrible experience. I have lived and worked in the Ballard area for many years and have not been there since 2018. Their work has been mediocre in the past but I wanted to give them another try. I called to let them know that I would be unable to make my appointment today as I am now required to work through my lunch. They are now charging me $50 even though I cannot make it in. This is super unprofessional. I have been doing hair for over 20 years and have worked in many spa's and have never experienced this type of behavior. I was very nervous for my first ever wax, but Stephanie made me feel so comfortable and made the experience way surpass my expectations. The lobby is a little overwhelming as it seems like a boutique shop as well, but the treatment room is cozy and relaxing. I went for happy hour (how fun is this) so it was a pretty good deal. The worst. I've been a loyal customer of the Laurelhurst location for years, which they closed. Tried Ballard, horrible location, no parking, and a very poor experience with whoever handles appointments. Drove for 40 minutes only to have my appointment cancelled because I was 7 minutes late, my first time to this salon and again absolutely no parking and no help from the receptionist. No, I'm not willing to wait a hour and 10 minutes for another appointment. Sad to say I won't ever go back even though I loved every person I saw in Laurelhurst over the years. read more

This place is cute and hip. That's pretty much Wax Bar has going for it. I'd come here a few times to get a brow tint, brow wax, and lip wax. The first time I came here, Deb did a pretty good job on my brows. However, the entire time it seemed like I was inconveniencing her. She was very uninterested, never said anything except "what do you want done?" and "I hope you come back. You should book with me again." With something as intimate as waxing, I feel like you should at least try to make your customer comfortable. I didn't feel this way at all. The next time that I came here, I got the same areas waxed/tinted. Somehow I was assigned to Deb again. She had the same attitude when I walked in. However, when she waxed my brows this time, I immediately felt a pain that didn't seem like normal waxing pain. It really stung and felt very hot. When she showed me my brows in the mirror, there were two big red spots underneath. When I asked her about it, she said that was normal inflammation and it would go down in an hour. By the time I got out to my car, I could tell something wasn't right. The red spots were bleeding and Deb had obviously ripped off my skin. I went home and it had only gotten worse. They still stung and continued to bleed. Over the next few days, they began to scab. I was really disappointed because I had a work event to go to (which is why I got my brows done) and I had to attend with large scabs under both of my eyebrows. I contacted the Wax Bar via Facebook (because no one answered when I called the Ballard location). I told them what happened, and a receptionist wrote me back and said that she was very sorry this had happened and that the owner would be in contact with me shortly to talk about what happened. I didn't want a discount or anything because I never wanted to go back there. But I did want to let the owner know so that this would never happened again. Two weeks went by and I didn't hear anything from the owner. I messaged the Wax Bar again (because again, no one answered when I called) and she said that they had tried to contact me but my voicemail box was full. I get it, that's my fault. I deleted voicemails to make space and then I called the owner's cell phone. I left two voicemails for her over the course of a week explaining that I wanted to chat with her about what had happened and she never gave me a call back. This was very frustrating and disappointing. Bottom line - Wax Bar provides subpar services and their management obviously doesn't care. I think that management needs to know that when a customer is spending upwards of $100 for 15 minutes of someone's time, is injured, reaches out to the company and the management still doesn't take responsibility, you are going to lose business. No matter how cute or hip your company tries to be. read more

I like this place, and have gone several times in the past, but this was my first after Covid lockdowns. I was extremely disappointed to see that my technician was not wearing her mask correctly, and potentially exposing clients. I JUST got tested and cleared, but now prob have to go back and do it again. Please inform all your staff on how to properly wear masks (eg - your nose sticking out is not correct). I have had nothing but great experience at the Laurelhurst location. But today I tried Ballard and had a different experience. This was my pre wedding/honeymoon wax and told them that in hopes of a little extra care since it's a special occasion. My Brazilian wax took all of 10 minutes and while I appreciate efficiency I don't appreciate all the bruising and broken skin that came with it. When I asked about it after getting dressed the girl who provided my service was very defensive that it always happens in the sensitive areas. I've been getting waxed consistently for a long time and I've never experienced this much pain, bruising, and broken skin after a wax. Icing on the cake was that the receptionist upon my check out scolded me for booking "happy hour" online and not calling to do it. This is the 1st time they have not honored the price that is printed online, Instead they have put in a stipulation saying I have to call to get the hh price. Okay, there's no avoiding it--this place is EXPENSIVE. But if you have the money to spend, the Wax Bar is a really good experience. Every wax I have had there has been thorough and it's a clean and well designed space. I usually go for full leg and bikini waxes, and try to schedule with Sara when I can (she always does a great job and is a total delight). Also, I am a bigger person, and sometimes have felt self conscious when getting waxed, or like the aesthetician didn't really know how to work with my body. Friendly staff but $90 for a brow clean-up, under arm, lip and chin wax that took all of 15 minutes, a huge rip off. Under arms were done in only one wax stroke each (instead of following the way in which the hair grows) and upon further inspection when I got home, noticed obvious portions all around that were missed. Not surprised given how quickly the service took place. Very disappointing, especially given the astronomical price. Will not be back. Do not recommend. read more

I really loved this place when I first started going. I had one bad wax experience about 2 month late ago that sent me home purple and red. They suggested I see the owner who can specialize in sensitive wax treatments. She was super awesome and used the right wax and even compensated me. Then I booked another follow up with her and she didn't remember to use the sensitive wax and I came home even more purple and red than the initial bad experience. If you are sensitive to waxing(eg. during pregnancy) don't go here, I literally cried when I got to my car. And now at 8 months pregnant I get to add this discomfort to my list of things not to mention the bruising horror show. I won't be going back. read more

I started going here about 6 months ago. Every single time I go I consistently get amazing eyebrows- compliment worthy. The best person I have seen is Jenny. For the price and quality, it can't be beat. You can book online any waxing service. The spa also offfers wine/beer while you wait, charging station and a great selection of jewelry, paper products, skin products - the gift section of the store is really cute and read so ably priced. I got a beautiful gold ring for under $20. Recently, I tried their facial- and I am now addicted. Jenny is amazing at facials- you must call to book facials as they want to make sure you have enough time and a facial room is available. Parking, if your getting a shooter service (under 30 mins) you can park out front. If longer there is street parking in the neighborhood. Also, they have a cancelation policy (like most places now) where you pay a fee if you miss an Appt or don't cancel within a certain amount of time prior. This is fair as I booked someone's time and so they were not able to fill the slot with anyone else. read more

I was so excited to come here and get my brows done. I'm new to Seattle and was open to trying this place out. I heard about the Happy Hour deal, and got to the Bar at 2:00pm (HH ends at 3). I was turned away at the door because the next hour was booked, rounding out the Happy Hour deal. The lady at the counter seemingly didn't care that they couldn't offer me any service until 3:15pm. She didn't even think to say someone might finish early and she could squeeze me in?? I took time out if my day and drove 15 minutes to a new salon. As a first time customer, I was treated so poorly. I like this place and have been for many Brazilian waxes. I recently had a miss, though, and their owner was incredibly thoughtful and responsive. Specifically, there was some confusion around what areas were included in a basic bikini wax, and it was suggested there would be an upcharge in the service I booked (so I left with less than I paid for). Turns out it was a newer employee who was still learning the service menu, and the owner reached out after the fact to correct the issue for me and ensure she reclarified the services with her team. I'm very appreciative because the upcharge wasn't insignificant, and it would have been enough to motivate me to go elsewhere, but now I don't have to! :) They do a great job and have a beautiful and clean location! I made a last minute trip to Seattle and wanted to try a waxing place other than the one in my own town. I called around 11 am and they were able to squeeze me in around 2 pm. I've never been here previously and The Wax Bar is so cute! It's modern, the boutique side of it is a great way to kill time if you are early to your appointment like I was, and they serve alcohol! The receptionist was very friendly and we talked for about ten minutes while I waited. I saw Karen that day and she was AMAZING. She made me feel comfortable, took great care of my sensitive skin, her waxing technique was excellent, and we spent the whole time talking. The wax was fine took awhile and spots where missed but overall I left content and really did love the girl who waxed me she was great but when I got home I noticed a burn on my lady bits and was pretty upset but thought it would be temporary. Because of the brave women who got on the net and shouted loud and proud where they go to inflict pain on themselves that is oh so worth it when it is all said and done. Karen is my girl and she rocks! Funny, personable, efficient, and fast. She doesn't give me a second to think, which I appreciate. I tried talking her out of what she was getting ready to do to me today, but she kept on trucking with her wooden stick, waxing strips, and warm blue wax. She has mad skills and loves what she does. Super impressed with her. They serve beer for $2.00-$3.00 if you need it as well as Aveda products, trendy purses, earrings, necklaces, and other accessories. Each room is private, equipped with soothing music and low lighting. Atmosphere is clean, waiting area is funky, and everyone who works there is nice and proud of what they do. I had been going to Habitude for years, just to get my brazilians from Karen Jahn. Recently, she left Habitude and opened her own salon, The Wax Bar, which debuted less than a month ago. The site, which was formerly a drive-up dry cleaner, was painstakingly overhauled and remodeled (with the exception of the floor, which looks like they had custom-made). The result is a beautiful oasis in Ballard that is intimate, stylish and awesome. Also, while you're waiting for your esthetician, someone will probably offer you a beer. Now that's pretty cool. So, anyway, Karen is a pro when it comes to waxing. She doesn't make pretenses--she doesn't feign to want to perform facials (she hired someone else fabulous to do those--more on that later). This may be TMI, but last week I had an ingrown hair that was killing me. Karen swiftly and expertly got the sucker and was so satisfied afterwards. That woman is *good* and loves her job. Newbies should feel totally comfortable about getting their first brazilians with her--no need to feel weird or awkward. She's calm, comfy, and careful; like I said, a total pro. I hardly ever get facials, but I decided to try one out last week since I'm a moron about my own facial care and wanted a diagnosis. Melissa was very soothing and sweet. One thing I noticed that I really appreciated is that she is always engaged; she doesn't leave you or just sit there while you're waiting for your peel to activate--she will instead give you a great scalp or hand/arm massage. [Did I actually wake myself up snoring?!--Ahem!] She explains what she's doing and makes helpful recommendations. She also doesn't do the hard sell on the products. Other points: the Wax Bar sells the Dermalogica line and some other really cool knick knacks. Good place for picking up a gift or, for someone who needs some pampering, a service (hint hint!). I have no problem paying for good quality services but The Wax bar is expensive, and the expense is disproportionate to the service. I have really tried to like this place. They are open late, and can usually fit you in last minute. They have a really trendy, modern set up, which I appreciate. They also sell a good assortment of accessories that are fun to browse while you wait. That's where the positives stop. I have had a couple of bad experiences that are unforgivable. I went in for an eyebrow wax; just a simple clean up. I don't have symmetrical eyebrows so it takes some attention to detail to get them looking even. I warned the woman about that. She proceeded to wax my eyebrows carelessly and ended up leaving a trail of individual hairs on one side and a normal eyebrow on the other. I know she tried but if you have ever had someone mess up your eyebrows you know how upsetting it is because its your face! Another time, I went in for a bikini wax. The woman was clearly inexperienced and had trouble. Instead of just taking her time and doing it right, she blamed me and my hair. She went over my skin with the wax 4-5 times totally irritating my skin. Anyone who gets waxed knows this is not normal. I was way too nice to her because I should have just walked out. It makes me so sad to write a bad review for The Wax Bar. I have been going here for several years for a happy hour wax when I needed a shape up to redefine my brows. Last Friday when I walked in, the esthetician said-- 'the shape is really good, we just need to fix this little bit'. I told her I wanted to keep them as thick as possible, because I have been working on growing them out for the past year. I was more than surprised when she finished. My eyebrows are the most bizarre shape I have ever seen. They are about half as thick as they were when I went in (and they were not even thick!), to make everything worse, they don't match. Every time I think about my eyebrows now it makes me feel sick (silly I know, but they make a huge difference in your look). It will take forever to make them look normal again, and I will not be going back to the Wax Bar. If you want to keep your face looking normal, do not go to the Wax Bar... too risky. read more

I love their Happy Hour specials... $15 eyebrow wax and a rotating service (last month it was basic bikini for $25) Happy Hour is Monday - Friday 1-3pm. You can call the day of to set up an appointment. They serve beer and wine, or water with a cucumber slice. The women who work here are nice and friendly. The place is cute, chic and clean! The estheticians are fast and meticulous. I am usually in and out within 10-15 minutes. I appreciate places that are quick, especially when I'm stopping by during my lunch break. read more

I had a horrible experience getting my eyebrows waxed this afternoon. Although the woman who waxed my eyebrows was friendly, I left the salon in tears. The entire top layer of skin below my eyebrows, on my upper eyelids and in between my eyebrows was completely ripped off. I was left with raw, burning skin AND I am leaving for Hawaii tomorrow. When I tried to explain that I was in pain and that they had made a mistake, I was told that the ripped skin was likely due to the facial products I use or the "oral medications" I take. However, I have been using the same face wash for several years (and have never had any waxing issues) and I do not take any oral medications or use topical medication. It is clear that the damage done to my skin was a result of poor training and lack of attention to detail. Although they refunded me the cost, I am extremely disappointed and will not be returning to The Wax Bar in Ballard. read more

I gotta be honest... I used to be someone who bargain eyebrow-wax shopped until I came across The Wax Bar in Ballard. First, it's got a super chic decor that's bright and classy, fun items for sale, and alcohol available for purchase. But what's important is the wax job. It's fantastic, the facility is so clean, and I've never had such a clean, thoughtful wax done before. Kate is efficient, and she always does such a great job. My only complaint is my skin seems to get more irritated with the wax used than any other I have had before, but it goes away quickly. I love The Wax Bar! I am terribly cheap, so I will only go get my brows waxed during their happy hours, when I can get a framboise beer, my brows done and leave a good tip for $20. Melissa has done my brows three times now and I absolutely love the whole experience! She is very personable and seems to honestly care about your answers to her questions! She also has two wonderful "cooling balls" that help take away the sting that comes from having hair ripped from one's face.
