Great service, personable staff. Not a seafood fan. But staying at the adjoined hotel and being tired we sat for dinner. Our waiter/bartender was sweet and attentive! Not too much, not too little service! Buratta was nice, loved the sneaky sweet bits! Burger fed us, but was the greasiest burger I've had in my life. Flavor was pretty good depending on the bite. The bun holding it together barley had a chance. Fries were crispy and nice. My fault for ordering a burger in a fish joint. They were super busy and clearly care about their customers. My throwing in red meat to the order probably made the kitchen insane. I would not order the burger again, but I would absolutely recommend this restaurant. read more

Every time I have come here the food has been fantastic. I've had a lot of burgers in Seattle and this one may be my favorite. I brought my boyfriend back here just to make him try it and he agreed with me. The ambiance is always great- cozy but feels fancy as well. Love this place and frequent it often. Breakfast is always fresh and delicious, filling but not heavy. You can really taste the quality of the ingredients. I love dinner here too, the 'meat'balls are vegan and delicious. I get them and the octopus almost every time. It's a busy place, but I never feel like I wait longer than what is justified for how busy they are. It's a small open kitchen, which is fun to watch. We ate here when my in-laws were in town. I made a reservation for a Friday night about a week ahead of time. They were VERY busy, but our table was ready for us and service was exceptional. This is a little pricey for the average night, but having parents in town makes for a special occasion. They have a lovely wine selection, pricey - but not your average grocery store finds. We had a white pinot noir that was perfect with our meal. We started with the smickles and grilled shrimp. My husband and I love smelt and pickles so this was an obvious choice for us. Definitely exceeded our expectations. We also did the grilled shrimp, which was a safe choice - but also balanced our smickles nicely and they weren't too filling before entrees arrived. For entrees- 3 at the table got the rockfish and I got the scallops. The scallops were cooked to perfection, but i was not a fan of what they were served on top of. I expected an assortment of roasted or pan fried vegetables, but they were drenched in some sort of cream and it was just way too heavy for me. I had a small bite of the rockfish, it appeared to be perfectly cooked and there were 3 clean plates on the table at the end of that course. We just had a really, really great experience at Shaker and Spear. My adult daughter and I have a long standing tradition of dining out together in the interest shared culinary adventure. We're both dedicated foodies with a passion for cooking ourselves, so we tend to be a little, ah, shall I say, *particular*. S&S got on her radar and she chose this spot for her birthday celebration dinner. The spot is lovely, mid-size casually upscale environ at the bottom of a hotel. It is clearly popular and reservations are recommended. The decor manages to be both classy and cheerily eclectic, with a jackalope, unicorn quotes (and unicorns!) and other surprising little accents interspersed throughout the more classical decor. Our server, Heidi, was *so* gracious, knowledgeable, warm and engaging! Across the board, the excellent service was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the evening. Everyone we encountered was warm and funny, but still professional without being overly stuffy. It really made the overall experience. Lastly, the food was just delightful and the staff's knowledgeable pairing and timing in sending out the dishes was great. Grilled octopus and arugula salad, steamed clams and truffle Parmesan fries (YUM!!), whole branzino and rosemary popovers. The pacing was great and pairings perfect. We had a lovely Lambrusco with dinner which included seamless wine service. Because we were there for a birthday celebration, we (of course) had to splurge on desserts, one of which S&S graciously comped in honor of our birthday girl. Birthday dessert is a great example of how this place goes above and beyond! Not only was there the de riguer birthday candle, but they also "decorated" the desert with whimsical little miniature tiaras, rings, a koala. They served it with HBD napkins and a hat and the staff all signed a menu with cheerful birthday wishes, really lending a personal touch. Our only complaint about our experience is that we both felt that there wasn't enough (any, really) moderate price point alcohol beverages on the menu. Everything drink seemed to average about $14 each. There's a great variety of price points (with excellent quality) on the food menu, why not also over a few more moderately priced options on the wine list? However, that is literally our only complaint. Overall, our birthday celebration meal at Shaker and Spear was one of our most enjoyable meals of 2018. Go! You won't be disappointed. This is my go to place for a nicer dinner. Their menu changes but everything I've had has been amazing! I love their fish options. They typically serve the whole fish so it ends up being big portions. Personally I like to order a few things for the table for sharing. You get to try a lot more that way and they have such great and unique options. Service is typically pretty good. Definitely should make a reservation because they get pretty busy. read more

The food was delicious, and the Dungeness Crab Benedict was the highlight of our lunch. The oysters we ordered were a medium size, juicy, and fresh. I prefer smaller oysters, but these were still delicious! The Mushroom and Herb Omelet was light and fluffy. Nothing special about the ingredients used, but it was larger than I expected. The Dungeness Crab Benedict was absolutely divine. The sauce was light and so flavourful. I replaced my skillet potatoes for truffle Parmesan fries, and was not disappointed. Tried Shaker + Spear while passing through Seattle last week for a quick anniversary dinner. We were blown away by the service we received from Robyn! She took great care of us all night. Everything from our drinks to dinner & dessert was excellent as well. We had the halibut, scallops, and brown butter sage risotto - would recommend any of them (the risotto is quite buttery and rich if you are sensitive to that). If you like fruity drinks, check out the Snozzberries Taste Like Snozzberries. Their rotating cocktail (blackberry lemonade) was also delicious. I came here by myself after a +10 hour flight at around 11ish on a sunday a few weeks ago. The place was half empty and bar seating was almost entirely empty. But the host still took about ten minutes to seat me at the bar. It seem like her first day on the job and she looked confused. After i was seated thing started to turn much better. The lady working behind the bar, im embarrassed that i forgot her name, was awesome! Not only was she warm and energetic but she also made me feel very welcome and at home, constantly refilling my water and coffee and checking up on me. She also was very knowledgable of the menu and made great recommendations. It was also a pleasure watching her directing everyone and playing quarterback of what was needed and where servers should go and dishes that needed to come up. Without her directions and guidance, i think alot of the servers and hosts would have seemed lost. If i opened a restaurant i'd definitely want to hire her in a manager role. As for the food, the salted cod beignet was excellent. The cilantro green sauce was an excellent counter to saltiness of the cod. Impressive contrasting flavors. The crab benedict was amazing! They really didnt skimp on the crab and the egg was perfectly poached. The mac n cheese was nothing special. I'd skip that one. I ordered a sausage waffle. But there was an miscommunication and the nice lady behind the bar wrote down regular waffles. I took a bite of the waffles and noticed there was no sausage in the batter. It tasted like a mediocre waffle. Im sure the sausage waffles must of tasted better. She offered for them to make a new one with sausage in the batter. However i was in a rush to get back to the airport. She was very understanding and comp'ed me the waffles. It was very nice of her and made an amazing meal feel like an even better experience. Came here as walk-ins with my partner on a Friday night. We were immediately sat at bar top (which we requested). We had prompt service from our bartender who was able to recommend specific drinks based on our preferences and his favorite entree and appetizer items. We ended up octopus for an app and the scallops and duck for entrees. Scallops were actually the best I've had. The duck was beautifully cooked in a complex sauce, make sure you don't mind beets because they were definitely involved! We didn't mind at all. The octopus was so beautiful. For drinks we got their version of an old fashioned, a pumpkin-whiskey seasonal served up, glass of Pinot noir, and a clove/pear drink originally supposedly served with vodka but the bartender made it with whiskey for me and it was incredible! My date was jealous. For desert we had the berries with coconut cream which i was so thankful for because I am dairy free! Overall a wonderful experience! We will be back. This just became my new favorite spot in Seattle: amazing seafood, great service and average-range price. For dinner, I was originally taken aback because I couldn't understand most of the ingredients but our waiter was very helpful in recommending the dishes and we pretty much ordered whatever she mentioned. Have dined at this restaurant twice for dinner and both times have very much enjoyed our meals. Really well executed seafood dinners and fantastic starters and veggie sides to compliment. Great wine selection and well made cocktails. The ambiance is cozy and a little different. Situated as part of the Palladian Hotel. At our last visit we had scallops and steak and both were beautifully plated and perfectly cooked. Their desserts are good with the pistachio dessert being a surprise hit for both of us. Surprised that I liked brunch here. Sweet service and decent food. I came here for brunch one weekend and it was fairly empty. I noticed that they do have space for bigger parties. They had one large round table, so if you're planning to come with a big group, call and reserve to get that space. I ordered the cornmeal ricotta pancake. It was so simple and done so right. It was so yummy, topped with fresh fruit and syrup on the side. I thought that it was rich and dense without being heavy. It was also a good amount that didn't make me feel bloated like a stack of pancakes would do. It's a good balance for something sweet. I also got to try the crab benedict. I like that this place has their benny's come with ham regularly, but then they top it with the extras. The crab came from the farmer's market so it was nice and fresh. It also came with potatoes. I thought the potatoes were okay. They could have been put under the broiler for two more minutes, but it was still good. It was a mix of different colors and textures. It was good. basic. Our server helped me a lot because I always have three million questions. He was kind and patient. He actually recommended both the items we got. He came over often to refill our waters and checked in on us. Overall, there are too many brunch places with eggs benedicts for me to come again. TL;DR: Great service, but meh food and stratospheric prices make this a lousy use of your dining dollar. Had dinner here last night w/3 friends. Let's start w/the positive: All the staff, from the host to the bussers were friendly, efficient, skilled, knowledgeable, and unobtrusive. Whoever is running front-of-house knows their stuff. Regarding atmosphere, decor is nice but it's a little crowded and pretty loud-Typical flashy high-end restaurant with high ceilings, reflective surfaces, and music playing to add to the noise level. Not as ridiculously deafening as some hipster spendy places get, but more than it should. Not a place for a romantic tete-a-tete for sure. Now to the food, which is to me always the most important thing. In a word, disappointing (even not taking into account the prices, with most mains running $30-40). All in all, skillfuly prepared food (except for the crabcakes, which were mostly breading) but almost completely uninspiring and definitely unimaginative. If the prices were more reasonable I might consider it for an occasional dinner out with gastronomically unadventurous friends or family. read more

Our server did an excellent job of tending to our needs, and made sure our dinner was a very enjoyable one. Our family had an amazing dinner for 5 where we ordered half the menu and just shared all of it. We got the grilled prawns w/old bay butter, Rainier beer steamed clams w/bacon & celery, oxtail bruschetta, whole snapper w/basil, garlic, & lime, diver scallops w/spring garlic succotash, sage arctic char w/cauliflower, polenta, & tapenade, anadama bread w/whipped butter. There wasn't a single bad thing that we ordered, but my favorites were the grilled prawns, steamed clams, whole snapper, and the sage arctic char. The prawns are lightly grilled which leaves their flavor mostly intact. Rainier beer is an excellent beer to steam seafood in and the clams were really tasty. The arctic char had an amazingly crispy skin, yet super tender meat. I was surprised they had whole snapper. Americans are usually afraid to eat whole animals, but it's a very popular way to prepare fish in China. If you think you can get past the fact that your dish still has its face on it, I highly recommend it. I just wish they had chopsticks so that you can easily pick all the tiny bits between the bones. Don't forget to pick out the cheek meat, as it's probably the best part of the whole dish. read more

I went to Shake and Spear for my birthday brunch and the food did not disappoint. I got this salmon cake eggs benedict and the salmon cake was surprisingly good and the meal definitely filled me up. I went to this thinking I was going to get the birthday dessert that I've seen in previous yelp reviews but instead we all got free champagne so I guess that was pretty good in itself. The mimosa was pretty good I think the free champagne I got was a lot less stronger tasting than the mimosa. And I got a signed dinner menu from the staff that was really cute too! We had breakfast here today, and we loved a few things about it but there was an issue. The service was good, the food was good, Nate our bartender/server was great. However there was a whole issue with our Canadian Driver License and our NEXUS issued by the USA not being accepted as valid ID. So we had to get our passports from the car which was with the valet. The big problem we had wasn't the rule itself but how it was executed. We were asked if we wanted to sit at the bar and if we were over 21. We said yes. The hostess took us to the bar, where we showed ID and ordered a drink then only after were told that our Driver Licence wasn't okay. I think if the hostess checked ID as we were at the front, we would have either gone and got the passport and not have to sit at the bar and deal with this for 10 minutes where we already were seated, or we may have just gone somewhere else because we stopped here just for a quick bite and drink before we headed out. Though I don't know why it seems only Kimpton (we were told) has a policy of not accepting Canadian driver licences or NEXUS ID as valid ID when NEXUS's act as our passport if we are traveling to and within the USA and most Canadians wouldn't be traveling with their passports if they have their NEXUS. (Though it was perfectly fine to use that instead of my passport to check in?) Either way, the food and drinks are good, staff for the most part were good. However I just think that they should be checking for ID's at the front to avoid all this. read more

Octopus was very tender, too soft for me. I like my octopus to be like sushi chewiness ;-) Asian warning: the black things on the whipped butter is not black sesame seeds! It's salt! My husband just scooped it with bread and almost got chalked to dead saying that it's deadly salty lol So I just tasted a single piece and told him it was salt. However, that doesn't mean the food wasn't good! It was just average for what I was looking for. We arrived 10 minutes late but they were kind enough to keep us a table, which was so much appreciated! Our server was a bit slow and she didn't greet us for awhile but I kind of attributed that to the fact it looked like she was the only server working a busy floor. Their brunch menu isn't extensive but it featured a lot of unique and diverse options! I decided on the mac + cheese with a side of cinnamon toast and omg I was in LOVE. The mac and cheese with perfectly creamy with a burnt cheese crust on top which was TO DIE for. Needless to say, I was obsessed with the dish. The toast was good but nothing special, but it was really good paired with the lingonberry jam and butter! If you're coming in for brunch, I think I would recommend making a reservation to avoid a wait. Shaker and Spear is part of the Kimpton hotel, but there is an entrance on the side, so there's no need to zigzag across a hotel lobby. I had a wonderful time at Shaker. The staff here is attentive and the food is so good! I highly recommend their truffle fries.. it's seriously next level. Each fry was so crispy and buttery.. hands down one of the best fries I've eaten in my life and I've eaten tons of fries. I also had their octopus with broccolini which I thought was okay, their shrimp scampi which is really good as well, and a glass of their prosecco. Their plates are definitely on the smaller side, but it was enough for two people. Their prices are def a little steep for lunch (~100 for two people), but I had an amazing time! read more

I had the duck, and my husband's burger was so-so. We finished with dessert, and asked for a cup of tea with my dessert. They don't serve tea, which was disappointing. The bill was over 150 for 2, I thought the prices were high for the portion sizes and there was nothing that wowed us. The service was good, but we were forced to order our appetizers and dinner simultaneously, which was odd, and only meant to me that they wanted to move us out as quickly as possible. So we felt forced to make decisions we were unprepared to make while the server stood over us. Would I go back again, no... there are so many choices in Seattle. Really enjoyed the Diver Scallops (perfectly seared) but the Arctic Char was amazing, wife and I had planned to share and she wouldn't give me much after tasting her Char. The chef has a great ability to elevate something simple, like scalloped potatoes and fries, to top quality gourmet food!
