We went last night for the early bird special and were seated in the first booth. It all started out fine until midway through a couple came into the restaurant and made it clear to the gentleman who seats you that they wanted our booth. I think they were regular customers but that shouldn't matter. Around dessert time I heard the guy tell the customers waiting for our booth that we were on dessert and shouldn't be long. A little later he tapped on our table to expedite us and then when the busboy was filling my water glass he motioned to him to not fill our glasses so we would leave more quickly. At that point the customer walked over to the guy in charge and said when can we be seated. Our booth was right where they were talking . It was incredibly rude and awful to treat customers who frequent their restaurant like this. As soon as we finished and got up they took no time to rush us out , clear the table, and seat those people. I'm appalled to have been treated so poorly. Is their money better than mine? I will think twice before going back and I let many know the terrible experience we had. We live locally and so do many others I know who also will think twice before going there. read more

Fantastik! Our first visit last night and we will definitely be going back! The food is outstanding: we started with grilled baby artichokes in a light vinaigrette and a special avocado and shrimp appy. Both delicious. I had the boneless ribeye, companions had the surf and turf and the veal chop, all perfectly prepared, excellent flavor. We also got the 3 sides: garlic mash potatoes, asparagus, and creamed spinach--delicious and nice portions. The martinis were also top notch! For a restaurant that's been in the area for the past 6 years, I felt like I've been missing out. My girlfriend and I went here for dinner and our experience was quite enjoyable to say the least. We were welcomed by the valet who parked our car. Although others may not like it, it's free (minus tips) and we didn't have to walk from our car to the front in the pouring rain. As we entered, the decor and ambiance were very modern and elegant; quite the welcoming change from the days of The Peking Duck. We were promptly seated for our 7:30 reservation and dinner began. The wait staff were very attentive and courteous. Drinks were poured right away and hot, fresh bread was given for the table. Appetizers then followed shortly after. The lobster bisque and Caesar salad were very tasty with nice portions given. After we finished eating our apps, dinner was served. We ordered the twin lobster tail special, the chicken rollatini, and a side of mac and cheese. The lobster was cooked and seasoned perfectly atop a bed of pasta; couldn't get enough of that lemon, garlic sauce. The chicken was ok as per my girlfriend. I thought it was good, but it wasn't to her liking. We both enjoyed the mac and cheese. It had a nice sharp cheese taste and was served piping hot. Lastly was dessert, a chocolate lava cake and raspberry sorbet. A little disappointed that they didn't have mango sorbet, but it was still good. The lava cake was very chocolatey and moist. Paired with vanilla ice cream, it was a nice treat. During the dinner, one of the managers came to check on us. This was a nice touch to our already good meal. She then came back after our dessert and we had a nice conversation with her. We told her it was our first time here and she gave us a nice welcome with complementary drinks. Went here last night for my birthday. 7:30 reservations. Place was empty with the exception of 2 other tables and it stayed that way until we left at 10 Place is decorated beautifully. Bar is gorgeous albeit empty. Once seated we were given a bread basket of warmbread and very hard butter. Bread had a freezer burn aftertaste. We started with a bunch of apps. Bacon, mussels, and one other that slips my mind. All were excellent. All of our entrees came with a salad and it was delish. 3 of us ordered the rib eye and one tuna. I ordered black and blue and that's how it came out. Steak was well seasoned and just simply gorgeous. We ordered a bunch of sides as well. Mushrooms, asparagus, broccoli rabe and baked potato. I agree that for a local choice this place isn't bad, but there were a few things I didn't love about this place. 1) I personally dislike valet, if there's a huge parking lot and not very far to walk, no need to force it upon patrons. 2) we had a 7:30 reservation and still had to wait almost 20 minutes for our table, while watching others get seated before us (many customers seem to be close with the owners and skipped the line). There is an event space upstairs which made the wait even more unbearable: think children screaming and very loud teeny bopper music. 3) while the hostess and owner thanked us for waiting, when we were finally seated, we still eventually had to ask for bread plates and menus. The bottom line: the food was good! But for the prices, it better be good, let's be honest. Our waiter was to the point, not super personable, just fine. When we wanted to start by ordering our drinks and starters, he asked that we order all at once (including entrees) bc the kitchen was so busy. We did get a free house salad which was nice, but I noticed from other yelp reviews a free item is quite common. And the table next to us also got free house salad as well. 3-4 tables in the dining area were celebrating birthdays, as to be expected when coming to a nice venue for a special occasion. First I must say, I can definitely be a tough restaurant critic. I'm a former restauranteur and former executive chef. For a restaurant to earn 5 stars from me, they better give impeccable service and very good food. My girlfriend and I came here a year ago for our first date. I was looking for a place that was upscale and offered a fine dining experience. They did not disappoint. I won't get into specifics about the first date because I would need a few pages. Trust me when I tell you, she was very impressed with my choice that evening. I felt like a superstar. I do want to talk about my anniversary date on Saturday. I'm going to start with the phone call. I called because I wanted reservations at the same restaurant we first went to dinner. I gave them my name and time I would be there and nothing else. (I'll get back to this in a minute) We pulled up and immediately you know it's upscale. Valet Parking. I love it!!! We walked in and were cheerfully greeted by the beautiful hostess who happened to be the owners wife Roza. Even the coat check woman greeted us with a friendly smile. When she walked us to our table, it was the same exact table we had. She said we figured we would want the same table. Back to the phone call....they knew exactly who I was and left that table reserved just for us. BTW the restaurant was packed!! The waiter came by and wouldn't you know it...same waiter and he remembered us. We ordered the Grilled Octopus and the Crabmeat Cocktail. The Octopus was the best I've had in a very long time. It was tender with just the right amount of seasoning. It was served with perfectly cooked asparagus and some delicious thick sliced potatoes. The Crabmeat was a fresh as it comes. They did the right thing by not adding spices to it. Lettuce and sauce on the side just as it Should be. The waiter actually split both of them into 2 plates for us. Smart of him to do so. For our main course, we ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and the New Zealand Rack of Lamb. The Chilean Sea Bass was cooked to perfection and the portion was very decent. The Lamb was cooked just as I ordered, med rare. It was the most tender cut I've had in a very long time. Their menu is so good that you cannot easily decide what to order. All their steaks are aged prime beef. Think Peter Lugers of New Jersey here. The service is impeccable. Roza came to our table to make sure everything was perfect. Every time we finished a course, they not only removed the plates and replaced the silverware, but also used a crumber to clean the crumbs off of the linen. This place truly pays attention to detail. They even gave us a complimentary dessert to share for our anniversary. Thank you so much to the owners and staff for making our evening. My advice....check this place out as soon as you can. You will not be disappointed. Rarely do you find a gem of a restaurant where everything is so perfectly thought of for the customer. Last note....the decor in this place is uber chic. My wife Iris and I come to Sear House often. The staff there treats us like family and we feel the same about them. Sear House is often crowded but the hostess and staff do their best to get everyone seated. The wait staff is attentive, especially Dardan and Jimmy. The food is always amazing, The oysters are fresh and well shucked, served with mignonette and traditional cocktail sauce. The steaks are great. I order medium rare with some char and my steak always come sizzling and tasty. I like to order a side of Italian hot peppers to pair with the steak. We often eat at the bar which is hosted by Zen. Zen has the ability to make every customer feel as though they are his personal guest. He makes an extra effort to introduce patrons to each other, turning each evening into a social event. Had dinner here for the first time with friends and our kids (~13 and 9/10 year olds). Arrived on the earlier side at 6:30 on. Saturday and was not too busy upon arrival. Lovely restaurant, nice ambience, comfortable seating, not too loud. Our server was Jimmy who was very attentive and friendly. We ordered several apps, steaks and sides. Not a bad choice if you're staying local for the night. Saturday nights can be quite busy but if you're in the mood for some quality steak without traveling far, this is a great option. I think the best steak is probably the Tomahawk for 2, a giant bone-in ribeye cut prepared in the same manner as a traditional porterhouse for 2. Side dishes were standard fare for this type of restaurant, which was not groundbreaking but well prepared. Dessert was also very good. Cons: We got there and it took over 15 minutes just to get food menus and when we got them, they were filled with grammatical errors. Had the pleasure of going to sear just by random. It was myself and three others at my table and honestly we had such a great evening. The service and attention to detail was outstanding. My table had a pretty traditional steakhouse dinner which included a fantastic chopped salad which I recommend to anyone. We followed this with some fresh oysters on the half shell and some HUGE slices of thick cut bacon(HIGHLY RECCOMEND). Now onto the main meal which was porterhouse for four medium rare and medium rare is exactly what we got. The steak had that great aged steak flavor which if you know what I mean was just a beautiful smell to me as well. I had to consider leaving this review because I do not like to poor reviews unless an experience is truly horrific. That is not the case here. I have been to the restaurant in Closter twice with my husband and son. The first experience was very good from food to service. I chose to return for my Birthday dinner. I ordered the scallop dish. They brought out my dinner before my family's and by the time theirs came out, mine was cold. No complaints, as that was my choice and I understand sometimes presenting food is not perfect. The two scallops I did eat were sandy, so that's a bit subpar. Based upon that I tipped 15% on the bill. (Bill was 325.00 and I left a $50 tip). The real reason for my poor review is that when I checked my bank statement, they had added more money to the payment. Instead of the $375 I allowed, they charged my card $390. I emailed them and did receive a prompt response and return of the $15. Though the manager's only excuse was that it was a busy Saturday night. Perhaps I am just a suspicious person, but I would definitely check your statements after dining here. Unfortunately, they lost a customer in me. read more

We were seated at a lovely booth as requested and found all the staff to be polite and somewhat friendly. The menu is quite extensive and had many offerings. The service was very slow. ( 45 minutes between appetizers and a simple main course ) As we were ordering well past our original reservation time, we decided to share our portions since they are quite generous. The chopped vegetable salad is Devine. Lots of asparagus, beets, greens, onion and carrot chopped very fine and dressed with a delicious balsamic vinaigrette. It was extraordinary We ordered surf and turf. A generous 10 oz filet mignon and a lobster tail along with a side of Brussels sprouts. The steak was perfectly grilled to medium rare. The lobster, a bit over cooked but fine for me. Sadly the sprouts were uneventful. Apparently, they were boiled first then sautéed with little flavor. I would return, on a weeknight , and try other items. I'm sure it's been hard for all restaurants, trying to make up for losses of the past year. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was cozy yet elegant. Even though we were a young couple, they treated us with dignity and respect which we appreciated. In many fine dining establishments, we're looked down upon and it takes away from the experience. The food was fresh, well seasoned, and cooked appropriately. I like a rare steak and it was reassuring to be able to cut into my meat and see a nice dark red in there. I've been to places where they overcook it and everyone else's meal either gets eaten or cold while I wait for my entree to be remade. I was glad this wasn't the case here--everything was handled well and without any hitches. I definitely recommend this place if you're looking to treat yourself to a nice, hearty steakhouse meal! I had a good dinner here. Not the best, but I went home satisfied. I opted for the pre fixe menu, and the courses did not impress at first but picked up steam as they went along. We started with one of their house reds, a tasty blend. The french onion soup however, was not. It was pretty bland. Also the cheese was slightly burnt and stuck to the bowl. The rest of the appetizers were a bit better. The stuffed clams were so-so, I would not recommend really. The calamari was A-OK. The night picked up when dinner came out. My sliced filet mignon was very good! The peppercorns added a lot to the dish. This was the highlight of my meal. I really like the steaks here & I wanted to give it a higher score; but I feel as the overall value of the meal I got here recently was less than my several previous visits. The restaurant itself is still beautiful inside & a warm atmosphere , even during these crazy Covid times. The restaurant appeared to be a lot less crowded than usual - which I guess comes with the times we are living in. I normally sit at the bar because I enjoyed the company & service of Zen ( a bartender who I understand no longer works at Sear).. But because the bar itself was not available - My wife and I chose to sit at a table. A waiter came over & took our drink orders right away. I ordered a dirty grey goose martini & specifically asked for the blue cheese olives. My drink came & it had regular pimento olives --which I don't like. Oh well, I just removed them from my glass & had the martini with no olives. For the price of the martini- it should have had the right olives. A short time later - a different waiter came over & took our dinner order l. I ordered the porterhouse for 2 (a $100 steak). And sides. The steak came out fairly quickly. Maybe things have changed, but I remember being given a small house salad , or at least a small plate of dried cheese & olives. So such luck. When I asked a third waiter who came over to fill our water glasses -- I asked him about the cheese & olives. He had no idea what I was talking about. Like I said -- maybe they don't do that anymore --- but for the prices they charge -- it was a nice touch & it gave you a sense of value. The fourth & final waiter came over to ask us if we wanted desert. We both had espresso & sambuca. I want to say-- all the waiters were friendly & attentive but When I go out to dinner - I like to have the consistency of one waiter throughout the meal. Not 4 different ones. That being said --- the porterhouse was cooked well & tasty as usual. This time around - It just didn't feel the same. I felt the value didn't reflect the price. First time out for dinner since beginning of Covid-19. Had rooftop reservation but rather than wait opted for indoor seating on second floor. Two walls open to outside. One to rooftop and one to atrium like room. Very comfortable. Tables were far apart for safe social distancing. Service was great. Friendly wait staff . My wife and I were made to feel like regulars even though it was our first time there. Portions were plentiful and food was delicious. I've dined here a couple times 2 years back and rented their upstairs facility to hold a family gathering and everything was decent. Staff was accommodating, food was above average, and the price point was very reasonable. Until most recently I returned to celebrate our friends' daughter's first birthday party. Food is still above average except for the fact that it was a bit on the salty side but aside from the food... Service was TERRIBLE and management put me at loss for words. Since this is a restaurant and a facility that hosts many events you would think they would have a changing station. Regardless, even if it was ok that they didn't have one when we asked if there was a changing station available the answer was: "I'm sorry we don't have such things you can walk to the nearest McDonalds." I don't know if I should be angry or laughing because I was dumbfounded by such an unprofessional response that stemmed from pure stupidity. Then we asked for some drinking straws and they responded: "oh we don't have that. Here use this" and handed us stirring straws. I just can't imagine a restaurant that would get rid of straws when they had them 2 years back during my first visit. And to top things off, every time we ordered something our waiter would just walk away mid conversation then bring us whatever he assumed we wanted. read more

This was my first and last visit to Sear House. Make sure you read ALL reviews. I hosted a party in the upstairs room, 65 people, adults and children, scheduled for 6:00-9:00. Everything started out great, aside from the fact that the deck was still dirty and had garbage from the last party. Family style appetizers came out at 6:15 and were delicious, and staff was friendly and accommodating. They said dinner would be served at 7:30. By 8:30, there was still no food and now guests were leaving with no dinner or dessert because it was getting late for their families. Cake was cut, but only half of it was put in front of guests and noone was served coffee or tea. I was the party host and I had no cake, and no coffee and neither did anyone else at my table. Multiple children were not served dinner, and my son, the person we were celebrating, was not served dinner or cake. In fact, staff put cheap carafes on the candy table with no sugar, milk or cream. It was disgraceful, embarrassing and unacceptable. When the bill was questioned and disputed, management became inflexible and unwilling to match the bill to the amount of dinners served, the missing dessert service, the lack of coffee and tea and the fact that people left without eating the dinner they ordered or the dessert we provided. I spent half my night chasing down staff for food updates, dinners, then later cake and coffee which was never served. The owner called the police and then had an assistant tell guests that were outside that they could not get their cars from the valet. The embarrassment and humiliation that was put upon us was disgraceful. The owner tried to intimidate us by saying if you don't agree to this, the "deal" is off the table. There's no deal, it was absolutely ridiculous. We agreed on a menu and the service, and were ready to pay cash for the party. But it didn't happen that way. We had to press and press until we were given a bill that satisfactorily matched the service, food and treatment we received. The restaurant clearly could not handle the parties they booked, forgot about the upstairs party, and unfortunately this will remain the memory of my sons communion. It was not enjoyable at all and so far below acceptable standards. Sear House ruined an entire evening. I will not return, and would NOT recommend the venue to anyone, for anything. read more
