Although the food was good, the service was less to be desired. We were there early (6:30 on a Friday) and our waiter seemed annoyed. I asked for Gluten free (which is a no brainer at at steak house) and ended up having a major reaction the rest of the night. This was by far the worst piece of filet mignon I ever had...and I've had plenty. I ordered the center cut filet mignon, which was the pricier cut. I ordered medium and specified pink in the center, NO red. The waiter asked if I'd like it sliced and I ordered a sauce on the side. The FM was served rare , unsliced and no sauce. I sent it back. It came back out, well done and crispy in some slices and still raw in others. Absolutely no taste. I couldn't eat more than a few bites, which I only ate because I was starving. The waiter stopped by after he served it the second time to see how everything was...I told him it was terrible, something I have never done but this was BAD. He offered to bring it back, no thank you...3 strikes your out. Dinner was ruined. It was a Friday night, 8:15 PM reservations, the restaurant was fairly empty. I now know why. My friends salad was good and I felt obligated to tip 20% so he wouldn't be uncomfortable...but I have to say, it killed me to give the 20% for a horrible meal and horrible service. Went for New Year's Eve dinner with a 9pm reservation. When we saw the menu, we were surprised to see a stupidly overpriced price fixed menu with minimal choices. I wish I knew this before hand as I would have gone somewhere else. $150 per person for a choice porterhouse for two, two shrimp cocktails with 3 shrimp, 2 sides, and 2 desserts. The steak wasn't even prime! Other choices were a surf and turf, salmon, and something else that wasn't even memorable. I've been there before and got the porterhouse for 2 for $150, but that was prime dry aged and extremely good. So we basically got charged double for an inferior steak. Extremely disappointing. They even felt the need to include a 20% tip at a table for 2. The total was $420 including tax and tip. We sat at 9pm, our appetizers came out at 9:30, and our steak and sides didn't arrive until 10:20. An extremely long wait for an understandably busy day. I really feel bad for someone that ordered salmon for $150. I don't mind paying for exceptional food and service, but this was clearly an establishment taking advantage of its patrons. Yes there was and we were completely prepared for it. What we weren't prepared for was the fine print of the pre-fixed 20% tip. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and was finally able to go. got last minute reservations with no trouble on a Friday night. the place is huge and was decked out for Christmas. the dining areas are gorgeous and theres even a fireplace in one of the rooms. we started with the lobster bisque which was pretty good but super heavy and a large portion. i wish i didnt finish the whole thing because i was really full by the time my dinner arrived. steaks were tasty and cooked well. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance strikes a balance between modern style and relaxed comfort, with dim lighting and rustic décor creating a welcoming atmosphere. And my mom was greeted by a lovely doorman dressed in a suit and tie. We proposed walking into the slightly lit hallway and up the stairs. We were seated in a booth in the corner of the room right after that. We were approached by a waiter. A first impression. Later. After, a different waiter brought menus. When the first waiter left, I noticed glass shards scattered on the table. Although no one was hurt, the presence of glass was confusing and concerning. A third waiter was called to address the issue, and while the situation was handled, it left me and my mom feeling uneasy. The clock is running.. Although I said it was getting better, we aren't done yet. My mom and I hadn't even ordered, and it was 6:30. We got there at 6:00. We still had the menu, and we were wondering what to order. After careful consideration, my mom and I decided what we wanted to order. I requested the burger with a large side of fries, and I made sure that the burger was done medium well, too. My mom got the shrimp salad and bread. After a while, a different waiter finally came to collect our orders and the menus that were left with us for quite a while (45 minutes ) The lights are out.. After we placed our order with the waiter, we began chatting, trying to enjoy the atmosphere and pass the time. But not long after, something odd happened: the lights in the restaurant began to dim. At first, we thought it might just be part of the ambiance, maybe a subtle shift in lighting to create a cozy evening mood. But within seconds, the lights didn't just dim, they went out completely. For what felt like an eternity, but was probably around 30 to 45 seconds, we sat there in absolute pitch darkness. Eventually, the lights flickered back on, not all at once but in a sort of shimmer and spark that only added to the confusion. I glanced around the room, trying to make sense of the situation. My mom and I weren't thrilled about being left in the dark, but we tried not to make a big deal of it. We brushed it off as a glitch or temporary issue and patiently waited for our food. However, that patience was starting to end. Time dragged on. The first 45 minutes passed, then an hour. Still no food. Not even a check-in from the waiter. What made it more frustrating was the fact that we weren't in a packed restaurant. So it didn't make sense why everything was taking so long? There was no excuse for such a delay, especially when the place was nearly empty. We exchanged glances with the other couple, who seemed just as puzzled and annoyed as we were. At that point, the whole experience felt strange and uncalled for. The food.. The menu at Sparkill Steakhouse featured steaks, wines, salads, and soups, with no vegan options but offerings for gluten-free and diet-specific needs. After about 30 minutes, my mom and I ordered appetizers, calamari with lemon, and cheese mushroom soup. The calamari arrived 10 minutes before the soup, which was unusual, but both dishes were well-received. I rated the calamari 10/10, and my mom gave the soup a 9/10, showing the restaurant was starting to make a good impression despite earlier issues. Despite a long wait to order and get the food, over an hour and the portions were massive, especially the burger, which I rated 9.7/10 for its size and taste. My mom's meal was smaller and rated 8.5/10. Dessert, a tiramisu, arrived quickly and was a standout, earning an 11/10 rating. Though there were delays in service, including a 35-minute wait to get the credit card back, the overall experience was very positive thanks to the excellent food. Final overall rating: 9.0/10. Despite the many Cons during this experience, I still believe that this is a gracious rating, understanding the experiences my mother and I went through just to order a burger and tiramisu. Started with dozen of blue point oysters my buddy said the were very fresh and juicy. Had to get baked clams with were nice and crispy on top but clams were overdone. We did an app and a salad to start and then did surf & turf and the T-bone for entrees. Given I had been so full from the app and salad, I didn't even eat half of my meal. Maybe a fifth of my steak and a quarter to half of my lobster tail. When the waiter came around to check I asked that everything be wrapped. We couldn't check the packages because they were not clear and assumed everything was in there. Saturday I went to have my leftovers for lunch and all that was in my container was the steak. They'd thrown out the lobster and my potatoes. As you might imagine I was pissed. This dinner was over $300 with the tip. What gives the waiter the right to pick and choose what gets wrapped up a very pricey meal that I paid for?! I sent them a message via Facebook complaining the next day. Twice in fact, that we were there for a special occasion-- to celebrate our anniversary. We ordered the crab cake for appetizer- which was pretty decent and reasonably priced. The pomegranate martini was ok. My date enjoyed his salad. For entree, I had the Colorado rack of lamb chops--4 lamb chops on top of a bed of sautéed spinach. They were delicious. Truly enjoyed this dish. My fiancé had the surf and turf. He asked for medium well. Steak was charred on the outside but clearly, had a lot more red on the inside. We had to send it back and have it cooked a little more. The lobster tail was a decent size -- looks more than 8oz and it was delicious with lemon and melted butter. Mashed potatoes side order were plain and average, not worth the extra $12--I would skip it. For dessert, we had the tartufo. It was a nice way to end the meal. Our only gripe for the night was that we didn't feel the waiters acknowledged the special occasion we were celebrating that night. There were only 2 other tables that dined in the restaurant, which meant they were certainly not busy. When celebrating a special occasion, every little bit counts. A gesture (happy anniversary written on our dessert plate), or a simple congratulations would've been nice. Instead, it was just a plain dinner experience, on a regular Tuesday night.. nothing special to rave about considering we were spending over $200+ for a 2 person dinner. Lesson learned-make a reservation ahead of time and indicate the special event you're celebrating as the waiters may not get the hint. Overall, the place is decent. If we had to do it over, would we come here again to celebrate a special night? Most likely not. On a regular night? Maybe... IF I'm craving lamb chops because they were delicious. Since Restaurant X closed, this is now the preeminent high end restaurant in Rockland County, NY. The steaks are absolutely fantastic. They're on par with any other steak house in the New York City area, including Peter Luger and Sparks. The service is very personable. I felt totally welcomed from the moment I walked in the door. It's expensive as heck, but it was my birthday present from my daughter. I had a bourbon Manhattan and a ribeye steak--both were delicious. I have eaten at Sparkill several times, and worked my way through about 80% of their menu. Everything, every time has been on point. Yes. One can nitpick at this, or that. However, the overall experience and general quality of the food surpasses most of the storied steakhouses in the City. Or, any city for that matter. The porterhouse has always been cooked exactly to the requested temp, and with the perfect amount of dry age funk and high temp char. Crab cakes -jumbo lump, always with more crab than breading. Sides are all excellent examples of steakhouse classics. And, the cocktails are always poured with generosity. I might even say more so than I would pour for myself. And to top it all off the service is just what one would want -understated elegance. Friendly, mindful, and always eager to make the Sparkill experience special. This is my special occasion place with my love. We've been here numerous times. The dining room is lovely and modern. Every time we have gone, the service is spectacular. You can not go wrong with their food, from their thick cut bacon, wedge salad, lobster bisque, oysters, and of course the porterhouse for 2. Sparkhill also makes their own steak sauce that goes great on everything. I usually wouldn't put a sauce on a quality grade meat, but they compliment each other. They also have "slog" which is their own version of whipped cream. It's so delicate after a meal. It pairs nicely with their chocolate mouse. We came on Friday afternoon around 4. Of course we were the only patrons at the time. The bread was amazing. However, they don't refill your bread basket. The salad is excellent. I had the salmon which was dry. I tried to ask what the sauce was, but we didn't see the waiter or anyone for that matter until we had finished. They were too busy conversing in Russian in the kitchen. The chicken parmigiana was ordered by my dining companions. They said it was ok...nothing to write home about.
