Sear House was really wonderful! I didn't know much of the place. I just wanted to go for dessert, but ended up getting a full meal. :P The hostess was exceptionally friendly. The atmosphere was nice and they have a party room upstairs and we heard the music bumpin! The have a lovely bar right in front with TVs if you want to sit back and watch some sports. Now to the food! My boyfriend and I ordered mushroom soup and lobster bisque to start. I didn't enjoy the mushroom soup because it was more of a purée. I was expecting a clear soup with mushrooms in it. The lobster bisque was good, it had good flavors, just wish it had more lobster meat in it. For dinner we shared a porterhouse with mushroom risotto. The porterhouse was cooked perfectly! Very good! The mushroom risotto was alright, seemed a little mushy for my likely. I also had the lychee martini! Very good! Not too strong, just the right amount of alcohol! Lastly, we had the chocolate lava cake with ice cream for dinner! Mmm, yummy! The food was EXCELLENT! The service was lousy. I saw the waiters and staff going from table to table. They were very attentive to everyones table, except for ours. I pointed out the disparaging difference of treatment to Ben, the manager. I also recommended that he review the tapes for training purposes. He was apologetic and offered us desert and coffee on the house. That was a nice gesture for such deliberately piss poor service. I am sure that being Black had absolutely nothing to do with it. We thought we try something different than our usual porterhouse. We ordered the tomahawk steak for two. Excellent choice if you're looking for that juiciness in every piece! It was tender and absolutely delicious. Also, we ordered the Portobello mushrooms with gorgonzola and AMAZING balsamic sauce for the appetizer. When it came out, it looked as though it was going to be heavy and salty, but NOOOOO! It's absolute heaven, it goes perfectly with their warm bread! Highly recommended! -------------- Yes there's the food of course, but the 5-star rating mostly goes to the service. Came here Thursday night for dinner. It wasn't a packed house but they provided valet service. We were welcomed by the warm, friendly hostess and waiter. Food arrived quickly, one course after the after. So we had a not so great experience a number of years ago but I have been back with family a couple of times since then, most recently last month. The food was wonderful and the service was top notch. I appreciate the effort made to care for our large party and help deal with 9 children. I would also like to add that the owners had reached out in the past after the bad review and offered to comp a meal. We didn't take them up on the offer, as it may have been a bad night. It wasn't necessary but the fact that they offered meant that they cared to make things right. As I said, we have been back a number of times since and I feel it is time to update the review to show that they did change and that the staff and owners do care to make things right. Came for dinner last night. My daughter loved the lobster bisque as her appetizer. The crab cakes were good, the aoli sauce it came with was good not too thick, very fresh. For my entree I ordered the ribeye with mushrooms & onions medium rare. The steak was cooked nicely with good flavor. We also ordered the 8 oz lobster tails. They were perfectly seasoned however a little too overdone & tough. Our sides were the garlic mashed potatoes, sautéed Brussel sprouts, & the hot long Italian sautéed peppers. The mashed potatoes were inedible poor quality, the peppers were okay if you like spicy, & the Brussel sprouts were amazing. My daughter enjoyed her rigatoni bolognese, no complaints. For dessert my daughter chose the chocolate lava cake which was so decadent I would 100% recommend. We had the tiramisu which was not so good, I would skip this all together. Place was relatively empty (as one would expect on a Monday night). Although it is a steak house, I saw on the special menu Chilean Sea bass and decided to go with that. Now usually they say "don't order fish on a Monday night" because it might not be the freshest, but let me tell you. This was quite possibly the best prepared sea bass dish I've had. We really wanted to like this place and I have a lot of empathy for the hard work that goes into running a restaurant in a pandemic. Additionally the food was tasty and came in large portions. If the service and the social distancing were as good as the food, we would have a real winner and would like to return however that just was not the case in our experience. The service was clumsy, cold and slow, whether asking for a wine recommendation (never got a wine list) or trying to find the restroom. We ordered the tuna tartare, a caesar salad, the lamb chops and the scallops and although we asked for the lamb medium-rare and it came blood red, it had a nice char on it from a good hot grill. We remarked with pleasure on the quality and presentation not only of our dishes but of those passing by, and the bread was warm although no olives or cheese or amuse of any kind. My Aperol spritz was generous, as were the wine pours. Service was another matter altogether. From the forced valet parking and the attendant who didn't even say hello/welcome to us much less ask if we had a reservation. He was just a guy in a mask sort of lurking uncertainly next to the car, and hard to tell if we were giving our keys to an employee or... ? Our waiters never introduced themselves and were spread really thin. For instance, we said in our reservation that it was both our birthdays and yet for long periods we ate without wine because we couldn't flag down an anonymous guy in a mask (again hard to tell if they are patrons or staff!) Also, unfortunately the bathroom was very dirty which is a deal-breaker for me. We left pretty immediately after that. The bill was not horrifying with several drinks and the above food ordered, so that is a nice thing. Now, a word on social distance. There is no way the people seated in the two adjacent booths were anywhere near 6ft apart from us. I was exactly the thickness of the banquette away from the gentleman dining behind me. The couple in the corner booth sat close to one another and were perhaps 4-5 ft from my husband. If that squicks you out at this moment in time, you should question the staff about seating options, which I wish I had done. All in all kind of a weird disappointment and with so many other better options even in Closter, such as the wonderful Stern and Bow and cute Brasserie Memere, not worth a return visit. read more

My husband wanted to come here to celebrate Father's Day, so I took him out for a date night (no kids) on Saturday. We had 7 o'clock reservations and the place was busy - not packed, but nicely filled. The roof top seating seemed to be the place to be (it was a lovely night) but we didn't specify that in our reservation so it wasn't a choice. We were seated at a large round table (set for four) closer to the entrance and the bar. It was nice to have the space and plenty of room for all of the food. Complimentary olives, cubed parmesan cheese and bread started us off. Next was the complimentary house salad to share. I sprinkled some parm on it to make it official. Glad I didn't order a salad as an app. Next were the mussels in white sauce - very good. Not a huge portion but we shared anyway. I opted for the one of the day's specials- sea bass with butternut squash risotto. It was delicious. The sea bass was a nice portion and cooked perfectly. The risotto was rich and filling and I have at least half to my husband (to his delight) since I was stuffed. He had the halibut special and loved that too. I was disappointed that they charged $3.50 for my seltzer - really? Other than that service was attentive (but not overly so) and we enjoyed our meal. I would definitely return, especially to try the rooftop (but avoid ordering the seltzer.) read more

Enjoyed a fun and enjoyable dinner last night. We were originally seated in the main dining room, but we requested to sit in the back near the open fire and bar which had a more dim lit ambience for us young folks. The server and manager were incredibly accommodating about this last minute change. Our server Alex was great with our party of 6. We started with the burrata and figs and the grilled calamari. The burrata was already cut in half which was a let down. The grilled calamari on the other hand was really flavorful. I loved my linguine seafood special. The portion was huge! The thin linguine was cooked perfectly. There was ample seafood as you can see from the photo and the sauce was flavorful. My friends enjoyed their rib eye steak - acceptable for a non-chain restaurant in the suburbs. Great wine selections by the bottle. We couldn't decide on dessert so Alex offered to great a smorgasbord of most of their options, which was a fabulous offer. My favorite was the chocolate mousse which came on a delicious Oreo crust. Overall enjoyed our experience especially how we were taken care of by Alex and the managers who stopped by to check on how we were doing. Looking forward to stopping in again! read more

Awesome! I was craving seafood and have been very selective with restaurants, second guessing quality during COVID. I picked up an order of Linguini with white clam sauce. It did not disappoint: there were close to 15 clams beautifully encircling the round container with a mound of linguini in the center. They went heavy on the garlic (which can be a good or bad thing depending on personal preference.) I enjoy a light garlic flavor so I picked out all of the pieces I could find. The sauce was wonderfully thick and somewhat rich. I also asked them for some of their bread and they gave me a giant saran wrapped piece of fresh bread. This is a place that tries to be a high end steakhouse, but falls quite short. We went here a few years ago for dinner and did not like it. Slow uncoordinated service and mediocre food. My Lobster Bisque was a strange, brown color and off tasting. It was also almost boiling hot - should not have been served that way. Recently, we decided to give them one more chance. Well, the slow uncoordinated service is still an issue. We noticed that "regulars" seem to get the lions share of attention while others sit twiddling their thumbs. The Food is mediocre, "just ok" is how I would describe it. The steaks are nowhere near Capital Grill or Allendale Steakouse levels of quality, not even close. One of our steaks was over cooked and some of the steaks were grizzled with fat and served on plates way too small. The sides were just "meh" - nothing to write home about. Even the Valet seemed to be scratching his head, befuddled as to what his purpose in life is. We will not be back. read more

I went to Sear on a Friday night. The restaurant has amazing decor and ambiance plus valet parking. Everything is socially distanced and set up well but oddly empty for a Friday night (even in COVID). For the meal, we got: Swedish Meatballs Bone In Filet (Special) Spicy Tuna Roll (Special) Side of Garlic Mash Side of Mac and Cheese Pear Martini Glass of Malbec The filet was cooked to temp but fairly fatty. Most likely, this is due to the bone in aspect since the kitchen can't trim the steak. However, due to this, I do not believe it was worth the $55 price tag (most expensive filet on the menu) and wish I got one of the more traditional filets. The meatballs were over cooked and pretty disappointing. They were hard to cut and two had a rough gristle on them, kind of as if they were cooked, refrigerated and reheated over several days (or perhaps more than once). Either way, they clearly weren't fresh because fresh meatballs shouldn't have been this difficult to cut through. As I was trying to chew through this rough bark found on 2 of the 3, I kind of imagined a walk in fridge, reminiscent of Kitchen Nightmares where Gordon Ramsey finds week plus old meatballs in a tray cooked in bulk. I feel like this is laziness as you could probably spot/feel this in a well lit kitchen or just choose to cook them fresh made to order. The sushi roll was very good and plated well as were both the sides. The drinks were fine, no complaints. The "house" steak sauce was generically bottled and tasted like Peter Lugers sauce. I can't knock them for trying to copy/recreate this since this sauce is amazing in itself so I was kind of happy to receive it. Overall, for the price range of this restaurant and for the kind of restaurant it wants to be (high end steakhouse) it was just average. I don't think the prices were too high on paper but you expect a certain execution in exchange and that's the part that was missing. At quick glance at the menu you think suburban Peter Lugers but it just wasn't. Next time I want to pay for an expensive steak I'll probably be driving to River Palm Terrace, Flemings, or trying somewhere else. read more

It was a special night out and we wanted to find a local steakhouse to celebrate. When we pulled up and got out of our vehicle we saw the valet walking up from the lot. He walked right past us to the car BEHIND us took his key and quickly parked his car. Not a minute later he comes sprinting back only to run past us AGAIN to the second car behind us!!! As he took the keys from the 2nd gentleman. I was like wtf to my husband!! Valet comes sprinting back about to take the 3rd car behind us. My husband calls out to him and the valet simply tells him to leave the keys in the car. Huh? 3 cars got quick right to your door service and he tells us just leave the keys and passes a ticket to my husband in passing? We enter the restaurant and we are seated within 5 minutes (mind you our car has still not been parked as we are escorted to our table). We sat outdoors (i didn't want to be indoors since I didn't know if their hvac system was updated to covid-19 protocols. A wee bit chilly but tolerable not a standing torcher heater anywhere out there. Most guests stayed in their jackets. The wait staff was quick and attentive. The food came out well timed from appetizer to entrees. Appetizers consisted of Greek style grilled octopus (a tad bit salty), lobster bisque (yum) and tempura shrimp sushi (the sauce had a little kick to it). All three were delish. Entree was the Tomahawk steak for 2 and 3 sides: brussel sprouts, burnt broccoli and garlic mash potatoes. The broccoli was as they said BURNT. It was beyond burnt (bitter). Bathroom was dirty! We were there around 1pm on Sunday (5/5). The bathroom had paper towel all over the floor and there was an empty drink left by the sink. Our food was okay but the male host was rude and when I mentioned the bathroom needed tending to, he was quite rude and didn't seem to care. At this prices, I expect everything to be top notch. Excellent food at a reasonable price in the middle of Closter, NJ. We stopped here for dinner on our way up to Woodbury Commons because it's the perfect halfway spot between there and the city. I had the rack of lamb and there were 7 bones on the rack, which was perfect. We also had the tuna tartar and the baked clams for apps - both delicious. My wife had the filet mignon and enjoyed it. The only thing I would recommend is a bigger wine by the glass selection. We'll definitely be going back. read more

I swallowed at least 5 on my first sip. There were likely 50 bugs in the glass. I am in utter disbelief.
