I've been going here since it opened, though I only actually go here maybe once or twice a year. Reason? No TVs at the bar. I, like many, love to watch sports while having a drink and/or an appetizer. There's no reason not to have a TV or two, with the sound off, so you're patrons can enjoy a game. I notice on sports nights, this place is always empty. Shame. Lack of TVs aside, everything else is really good here. Great atmosphere, nice, professional staff and the food is excellent. Prices are fair. For lunch, dinner, I'd highly recommend it and desserts, appetizers are very good too. Great selection of booze, beers and wines and a very nice bar. I'll go back, just not on Sat, Sun, Mon or Thurs (college and pro game days), or MLB evenings or Superbowl or World Series. Went here for brunch on Sunday and it was great! The patio was heated and our server was really accommodating. I think he said his name was John, or Jonathan. Really great guy! When it came time to order, I wasn't sure what to order and our server me asked questions that help me decide. He tailored his questions to the taste I was feeling that morning. Scratch has found the recipe to getting your money while putting in as little effort as possible. It's a shame, because the restaurant is still attractive, but the food and service have slid dramatically downhill. Silverware was sticky, food was just a notch above airline (kind of like a busy banquet hall), and the service was clueless. The restaurant looked promising. We were greeted at the front desk and promptly seated at our preferred type of table. From our online research, we knew that the menu prices are high, but we noticed that the a la carte prices were more moderate. Once seated, we ordered drinks. It was not so shortly after that the problems began. There was a long wait for the drinks --we had to ask for them again. Nobody came to take our orders for quite some time. We had to flag down our server since we had only allowed 2 hours (!) for lunch. Once we placed our orders there was another long delay for our food. Our waiter proactively apologized for the delay, which was blamed on a large party that was seated ahead of us. But the party wasn't particularly large and the restaurant is large. Eventually, our fairly small portions came. We had to ask for each of the following typical items: spoons, salt, pepper, condiments, salad dressing, coffee refills, water refills, etc. Our waiter never checked on us to see if we needed anything. We even had to ask for our check. The prices are high. Especially high given the small portions. Maybe we had a rookie waiter, I don't know. But given the poor service and high prices I doubt that we'll be giving them another chance. read more

DONOT ORDER SANGRIA: GAVE ME DIARRHOEA We went there on a Sunday evening date and were promptly seated by them. The service was quick and friendly. We are vegetarians, so it was nice to see a separate vegetarian menu. We ordered CRISPY TOFU which was amazing and PAN ROASTED CAULIFLOWER AND BELUGA LENTILS which was very okay, would not recommend unless you are a fan of close to raw cauliflower. But here's the worst part. I ordered a Sangria which had strawberry which had gone bad. I didn't realise it back then that it was bad since it was my first ever Sangria, but it gave me the worst diarrhoea of my life. I would have recommended this place, but I didn't expect something this bad from an upscale restaurant like Scratch having quality control issues. read more

We came to Scratch since it was very close to the Performance Center. The food was long in coming, the food was mediocre at best and the servers tried their very best to cover for the less than stellar kitchen. Will not be coming back. A shame really. We've given the place many opportunities to be good but each visit is a disappointment. read more

I've been here several times, including bringing my team from work. The food is good, drinks tasty and the waitstaff are superb. This could be a great place. However, Steve, the manager apparently has never heard of the concept of customer service. When we arrived recently with some older relatives who have minor mobility issues, he tried to give us the worst table in the place, in the very back, while other, much nicer tables were available. We booked reservations several weeks in advance for 1 hour after they opened, (it was a special occasion), we arrived on time for brunch and had requested a specific, nice table, which was already given to another party. I'm not sure what's going on there but it's clear Steve is in the wrong line of work. I'm guessing he doesn't want older or slightly disabled folks affecting the restaurant's image. read more

The place was mostly empty so we got pretty prompt service The restaurant is gorgeous inside. Feels quite upscale from the decor. The food was good but not gourmet enough to match the decor in fanciness, but we were happy We start with drinks. The wife ordered cocktails, which were generous, and i stuck to beer which was all local brews. Nice touch The apps were good. I got the mussels and fries. The areas of the dish that mixed flavors together were excellent. Without the sauce or mussel juices the fries were so-so. For entrees i got the fried chicken which came with a cornbread and refried bean sides and i also ordered the sweet potato fries cause i wanted to taste the chile lime aioli. The chicken was very good, the breading was delish and the meat was perfectly moist and tender. The cornbread was fine and the beans tasted like any canned refried. The sweet potato fries were good enough. The aioli was a little too spicy but good enough. For dessert i tried the cheesecake with the recommended port, the combination was great but the cheesecake was a huge cake. Too much for a dessert. I was hoping for a light dessert. I chased the meal down with coffee and we called it a day Price was fine. As expected for 2 with 3 courses each and drinks, about 250 in the end. Scratch my back and I'll scratch yours! The portions will surprise you because usually at high end restaurants , they'll give you a great meal but kid size. Here at Scratch, you pay for the portions and the taste! Starters- calamari Big bowl . It has vegetables in it (don't worry it's fried ) Entree- Steak (medium rare , of course!) cooked perfectly and the broccolini was amazing. Made a reservation last night for a party of 3 at 8:30, and from the moment we show up our server, Anthony, is rushing us out "kitchen and bar close at 9, do you know what you'd like", mind you we've been seated for less than 10 mins. Place a order for fried calamari and two cocktails to start. Anthony comes back to the table once the calamari's been brought out (cocktails still MIA). My friends and I are then talking about what we'd like for our entrees (I got the stratch pizza and my friend ordered the pot belly appetizer and the salmon) and our server Anthony says "that's a lot of food, and I don't ever tell anyone that" ..... okay, so why are you telling me? Lovely restaurant and great service! This is a high-end and fancy place. Perfect for a romantic date! This is my favorite in Mountain View. Less noisy and many waiters are presence to take orders. I ordered meatloaf, salmon and mussels. The food came fast - litterally within 10-15min. The waiters never let our glass empty for water and were very serviceminded to fill up or receiving request for more napkins. Strongly recommended if you're into a quite night with romantic atmosphere and they've a cool round table next to the bar where you can just enjoy drinks. Called in for a drink around 7pm on a Saturday night, the bar used to be lively and a fun place to hang out, but there were 2 other people sat at the bar. We were giving food and drink menus fairly quickly and then the server disappeared. We finally managed to get some drinks with a grunt, then he disappeared again. No one ever came to ask if we wanted food - thankfully we didn't. Eventually I went to the hostess to ask someone to give us our check - after no one had been near us for over 20 minutes. The crab cake and Mac and cheese were good, but the steak sandwich was shockingly light (very tiny piece of steak and some Mayo) for $20+ and my bf's fish and chips were oddly presented. It was just one large piece of fish that made the fries soggy and the fish hard to eat. I hate to leave less than stellar reviews because I know how important they can be to a restaurant, but their food is very pricey and should be held to that standard. read more

Service was not great, bread was terrible - dry and stale. Biscuits were obviously reheated, cold on the inside and we never hot our honey maple butter. Waitress never asked how our meal was, but she was generally pleasant. Rotisserie chicken is bone in, could use more pan jus. Short ribs were good, again more sauce needed, and pretty cheap with the grits. Local greens salad was delicious - best thing we had - really enjoyed all two tomatoes. I've been here a handful of times, and it never disappoints. Full menu of American cuisine. I even enjoyed there separate vegetarian, and vegan menu. I always enjoy the large open bar, and the cute bar stools near the windows to people watch. There is a large selection of wine, beer, and cocktails. Drinks and food are a bit pricey, but the service, and ambiance make up for it. Food portions are large, so come hungry! Few of my favorites here are the turkey club, mac n cheese, and salads (all of them)! I tried the brunch menu on Sunday and it was delicious! Also, Juan was great! Happy hour is the only thing worth getting here! Dinner is over-priced and significantly lacking in taste. Came with a group of coworkers and was sitting in dining area. It was still Happy Hour but our server would not let me order off of the HH menu. I was told I had to go sit by the bar! wtf? Just b/c of the location of my effin chair, the price of my food doubles! What an insanely idiotic concept? I ended up ordering HH food by the bar anyways, and ordered entree with my group. HH food was inexpensive and very tasty! Entree was very mediocre and overpriced. I guess it just wasn't all that notable here in the corner. I came here with a gf last night and the food was amazing! Sure, it is on the pricey sure, but honestly you're paying for the atmosphere and the presentation. I think it's a great spot for a date night! They have a nice round bar at the front of the restaurant and lots of beers on tap as well so that's A+ for anyone who wants to grab a quick drink. I had salmon and the crab cakes and both were absolutely delicious and well made. Even the cream sauce that I was a little afraid of wasn't too heavy at all. When I am in this part of California, I am traditionally here for work. Let me translate "work" for you. "Work", in this case, means that I am ordering room service at the Sheraton in Milpitas late at night because I have convinced myself that fries and pizza are an awesome idea, as I have talked so much that for some reason I cannot feel my legs anymore and my brain is mush. Also, I am also going to watch The Bachelorette. The last time I was in Mountain View, I got swept away by a friend in a convertible and we landed here. It was a little miracle to score a table when we did, but we got the last two-top and went at it. The restaurant is modern. It is high end. The environment is also surprisingly warm... or was the night we were there. It seemed that everyone who was eating around us was having a good time. I can't say that the service helped things, but they also didn't hurt them. They got to the brink of too-much-time-away, my-drink-is-too-low and you-are-talking-too-long, but then recovered. The white sangria was perfect for a light summer drink. I had perfectly cooked scallops, which (let's be honest) never happens. The onion rings are magical. Go here. Call first. read more

Finally this space is no longer cursed and a restaurant has been able to establish itself successfully on this busy corner of downtown Mountain View. Scratch renovated this place to be modern and elegant with lots of light. Throw in a raw seafood bar and a great happy hour and I am a fan! Excellent beer choices on tap for the boyfriend (including Allagash, Full Boar, and Arrogant Bastard) and superb wines by the glass for me - the favorite so far begin the Foxen Chenin Blanc. Both wines by the glass and beers are half off at Happy Hour, giving me one more reason to overindulge. All appetizers prices are slashed in half as well ($1 oysters whaaaaaat!) and you can get their flatbreads for $7. On our last visit we started with a half dozen oysters, 3 of them were Fanny bay and the other 3 were Miyagi. Both were excellent and paired well with the wine vinaigrette they were served with. We then had the steamed mussels in a shallot, garlic, and bacon light cream sauce with French fried kennebec potatoes. That sauce is pure genius! I used my empty mussel shells to spoon that liquid goodness straight into my mouth. The French fries soaked the sauce up very nicely, too. The bacon bits in dish give great texture and make for a hearty flavor addition. I could eat this dish any day! Still hungry, we ordered the BBQ pulled pork flatbread - slow roasted pork, red onions, poblano slaw, and mozzarella on a nice crispy dough. Delicious and filling! Our bartender was very attentive and quick to clean up our empty dishes. here's the skinny: food? above average. service? awesome! my bff brought me here for a belated birthday brunch since neither of us had ever dined here. i'd heard that this is one of the "it" spots for drinks in downtown mv, but i was curious to see how their food and service compared. although we made a reservation on opentable.com, clearly this was unnecessary as the restaurant was pretty empty at 1.30 on a saturday afternoon. we were seated right away and given both the brunch and lunch menus. we ordered a cobb salad to share, which consisted of romaine, lettuce, tomatoes, chicken, avocado, quail eggs, blue cheese, and red wine vinaigrette. we requested the cheese and dressing on the side since we weren't sure how strong they'd be, and were glad that we chose this option since the cheese was really strong and mixed with the dressing, created a powerful combination. the grilled chicken was very fresh, and the quail eggs, which were semi-soft boiled, were quite tasty. my bff ordered the blueberry pancakes and opted for a side of bacon instead of the default chicken apple sausage. the pancakes were just ok, i could tell the blueberries were not fresh, however, adding the warm, vermont maple syrup made them a step above the usual pancakes and room temp syrup. i didn't try the bacon, but bff said that the slices were crispy and tasty. i ordered the cous cous crusted crabcake which was an unexpected delight! the presentation was gorgeous, like a work of art, with a spiced cracker bread right in the middle, and colourful garnishes on either side. the crab cake was tender and flavourful, although i had a hard time tasting the cous cous. i loved the red pepper hummus and freshly chopped tomatoes and cucumbers that accompanied the crab. the cracker bread had a nice texture, but it had a bit too much of a spicy kick for me. although i wasn't planning on having dessert, my bff somehow snuck in a special dessert order with the waiter, and moments after their cleared our lunch plates, a bowl of fruit with a candle was brought to our table. i appreciated a light and healthy dessert since we were planning on having some sweets later that afternoon. while the food was good, the service was simply stellar. our waiter was very prompt in refilling our water glasses, checking in on our food, and tastefully wishing me a happy birthday without creating a scene (i'm not a fan of being embarrassed or having the entire restaurant know that it's my birthday). this was a really nice venue to celebrate my birthday, and i love the ambiance and simple decor inside the restaurant. i'm eager to come back to try some of their other dishes, or perhaps check out their HH sometime. read more

My super sweet new co-workers brought me by Scratch for my first day on the job! So nice right? I wanted to like Scratch, so for the moment I'm sticking with a 3, especially since the company was good ;D So while the chicken was cooked perfectly, the negative 2 stars essentially result from the au jus being overly reduced and absolutely smothering the food. If I can't taste the delicacy of the carrots, you've gone terribly wrong with your sauce gentlemen. This probably wouldn't be my go-to, especially since the service was quite slow for the low number of people in the space, but it was nice to come out and enjoy ourselves! I'd try it again with a different dish, but most likely move on if it still let me down. read more

I love love love the vibe here. The bar is rounded, huge, long, and in your face as soon as you walk in. There are intimate little tables alone the windows of the rounded feeling entrance. You walk through there to get to tables. Two large dining areas are split by the kitchen. Very open and comfortable feel while still feeling private and quiet once you're seated. Very classic feel as all staff is in shirts and ties. If you had a live piano player in here I'd live here weekly. Drinks...amazing. Huge menu of well tailored seasonal drinks. Food...can only comment on a few salads, flatbreads, and apps from memory. Not incredibly vegetarian heavy but enough for me to be satisfied. Ambiance is fantastic for a date, business dinner, or catch up with fam/friends. I've seen kids here and its fine for them too. Let me start by saying that I had very high expectations of this place... but from what I can tell, all glory must've gone out the window with the restaurant's opening chef. To begin, upon arriving, we were curtly told that the restaurant was "fully committed" and were advised to either sit at one of the 1x1' high top tables, or at the "bar" near the kitchen. We chose the latter. (Mind you - we weren't upset that the restaurant was booked solid - that's typically a good sign, but there's a much warmer way of letting your guests know). Training. So, we sit at this "bar" near the kitchen and wait for a server to come over. When he does, his breath WREAKS of whatever he'd just scarfed down for family meal. Mints are your best friend in this business. Hygiene. After sifting through all ten menus we were given (why does everyone receive your vegetarian menu??) we finally decided on dinner - but only after our server had asked if we were ready 3x within 7 or so minutes. Read your guests - especially when they're still clearly reading their menus. So, the watermelon salad arrives for us to share. Nothing to write home about, except that the peppers and raw onions have totally killed a dish that could've been really nice. Meanwhile, we watch one of the cooks handling all of their PRE-SHUCKED OYSTERS with his BARE HANDS. Right in front of us was their measly stocked oyster bar. We soon realized that all of their oysters in house (other than the 5 that were for some reason halfway on display, along with the lobster that looked like it wanted out as badly as we did at that point) had been PRE-SHUCKED and were sitting on top of one another in drawers below the station. Mind you, it doesn't say "freshly shucked oysters" on their menu, but the whole point of oysters is that they are FRESH and shucked to order - not sitting around in a drawer drying out and mixing flavors. Now back to the cook who is still half-assing his food handling. You either wear the gloves or you don't. There's NO point in putting one glove on and then continuing to use your bare hand to smooth on the sauce over the lobster tail that's about to go into someone's mouth. You're clearly on display. Maybe wash your hands at the neighboring sink right before you start to plate food. Oh, and not washing your hands in between changing gloves is still technically cross contamination. Training. Integrity. My point here is, if you're going to have any part of a kitchen within view of the public eye, you better be sure your staff are handling food properly. Finally, our entrees arrive. My husband got the fried chicken, a side of bacon cheddar biscuits, and I got the beef short rib. **The beef short rib was the entire reason we drove from South San Jose to check this place out.** He loved the chicken, although the beans alongside were NOT true "Boston baked beans" in any way, and were nearly too spicy to ingest. In addition, the slab of corn bread that accompanied the chicken was dry and cold, and had unfortunately large pieces of whatever herb was used therein. The side of bacon cheddar biscuits weren't bad, but if the accompanying butter is going to be called a "honey butter" per their menu, they should let you taste the honey. Now to the beef short rib. The main event! Right? WRONG. The accompanying polenta and mushrooms, I will just say did not do the dish any justice. If anything, it took away from the short rib, which was nearly the driest piece of meat I've ever had put in front of me. The "blackened" tomato polenta only intensified the dryness of the meat. Not inedible, but most certainly not the delicious piece of meat I was expecting to devour. Dry dry dry dry dry. Had our server checked back with us AFTER we'd tasted the dish, maybe I would've been able to order and enjoy something else. But instead, I sat there for nearly half an hour with my silverware clearly not being touched and my hands in my lap. Failure. Finally at least ten minutes after my husband was done with his meal, we were able to flag down a manager to bring us our bill. Who knows where our server disappeared to.... When the manager brought over the bill, she asked if we'd like boxes and I explained to her that I was disappointed with the dry short rib dish, which was why I had eaten only a few small bites. She kindly took it away and removed it from our bill. This is most definitely the go-to after work spot for the Mountain View business crowd. If we lived closer, would we go back for drinks? Possibly. Would we ever go back for the food? No. Although everyone was mostly friendly, service was very much lacking. Needless to say, we hit Chick-fil-a on our way home, as the few pieces of watermelon I had didn't quite fill me up for dinner. What a sin. I came here for Happy Hour (4-6pm) today and ordered the following. Cocktail -Lavender Side Car: tasty flavorful drink and a good deal at $5 (50% off during happy hour) Appetizers -Porkbelly: YUM! This was my favorite. The grits, sauce, pears and green that come with this add really great complimentary flavor to the salty/soft porkbelly. -Goat Cheese Souflee: It was tasty but small and not as wonderful as I imagined it to be. I wouldn't get it again. -Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Dates: I liked the way the bacon complimented the sweetness of the dates. However, at the end of the day, dates are not the best. Bacon wrapped figs would be better! Main- Butternut Squash/Pancetta/Blue Cheese Pizza: MMM! This was some tasty pizza. I'll definitely get this again. You really can't go wrong with Pancetta and Blue Cheese. The service was very amiable. We had a bunch of different waiters help us out (we were sitting in the bar area) but every gentleman was cordial and very helpful. I'll be back for this happy hour again, surely.
