Scratch is one of our favorite pricey casual restaurants. The service is top notch, the dining room is beautiful (we have also eaten outside which is not as atmospheric but good for people watching). There is plenty of parking nearby, both street and parking lots. Here's what our party of 3 had on a recent visit: Appetizer - duck potstickers with hoisin dipping sauce -- wonderful, I could have ordered 2 of these plates as an entree and been happy Mains - I had the pan-seared scallops with mashed peas, spinach, capers etc. Very good -- my only complaint is it only included 3 small scallops. For the price there should have been 4 or 5. Fried chicken with mashed potatoes, sautéed kale. This was delicious, we don't often order fried chicken but this was cooked just right. My sister had the goat cheese salad as her main, it was very good with little balls of fried goat cheese. Drinks: Good wine selection, I had my usual glass of Savee Sea Sauvignon Blanc. Dessert: We split an amazing dessert, the Sticky Toffee pudding Sundae which is caramel and vanilla gelato with a toffee sauce, whipped cream, pecans-- so good! next time I"m getting one for myself. read more

My friend and I came here on a Wednesday for happy hour and the place was pretty quiet. However, it was fairly crowded by the time we left. I ordered the happy hour special burger and Hurricane. My friend ordered the chicken sandwich and we got the sweet potatoes to share. I really like my burger, it was juicy and flavorful. The size is smaller than I expected but was filling with the fries. My friend thought the chicken sandwich was too crispy and too much batter. The sweet potatoes was really good without the aloli. The service was quick and the bartender was efficient. It's not our first time here but this time we felt both the service and food quality have improved. The menu is generally not cheap, but we managed to find something for everyone of under $25 per item. Truffle mushroom flatbread, Ciopinno entree is only $22, Sctarch burger was $25 and hubby was very impressed with the juicy patty and the overall quality of the burger. I saw juices dripping out while he was biting onto it. My Cioppino was loaded with ingredients and the bread was buttery and toasty, every bite was so perfect. This has become my new "go to" brunch spot. Not a giant menu, but just enough to satisfy nearly anyone with a nice mix of breakfast and lunch offerings. Ambiance is fantastic , service is also fantastic but I was slightly disappointed with the food. To start my glass of house Chardonnay was very good. The beet salad was very good but the grapefruit and blue cheese with pickled beats was a bit strange. I had the scall and although the scallops were cooked properly they were a bit salty and the mashed peas were slightly too sweet. My daughter had the five spice duck breast which was delicious but very rich. A touch of acidity or a few more berries on the plate would have balanced it out a bit better. For dessert I had the cream brûlée and my daughter had the apple fritter bites and both were very nice. Would I recommend this place, maybe, I would definitely give it another try . read more

This review is specifically about their Happy Hour. The menu? Great! The experience? Not so much. Service: 1/5. Even though we got there right at the start and the place was dead empty most of the time we were there, we barely existed. Our water glasses were empty (and it was 90 degrees outside). It took like 25 mins to get our calamari. The staff clearly didn't give a sh- about taking care of guests. Case in point: our calamari (which the menu describes as served with cocktail sauce and tartar sauce) came with... NO sauce. And when we asked? The server pointed to a red smear on the side of the bowl and said, "that's the sauce." Now, I know we were not the first people to ask about calamari served without dipping sauce. Another employee even said as much! So why not say, "yeah, this is how they serve it, but let me get you some extra as dipping sauce." Food: Calamari was served without sauce and included some weird peppers (?), some of which were super thick and others which were very thin. Not sure what they were or why they were in there. Sweet potato fries: were served with "aioli" which basically looked like clarified butter. It was thick and goopy and weird. Burger and fries: Good. A great deal for $10. Almost made the whole experience worth it! Drinks: If you go to happy hour, you're getting a great deal - $11 for a well alcohol cocktail of your choosing. I got a gin gimlet and my friend got a dirty martini. In the Bay, for $11, it's a steal ... as long as you don't mind waiting 20 mins for it! read more

I can say my wife and I both enjoyed our time here. The staff was friendly, our food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. The atmosphere was good for being able to have a conversation. We came to this restaurant after walking by so many times and not ever looking at reviews. We can both say that we would come back for a special occasion like family visiting town. For what this restaurant does it does well. My wife enjoyed her drink thoroughly and all the food we had to eat. The brussel sprouts came out crispy and with a new flavor note we haven't had before at other restaurants. We spoke with the manager, as the restaurant opened at 10am, Saturday morning. and he was very welcoming and helpful. We ate outdoors for brunch. I had the teriyaki, NY steak strip and eggs, with fried rice. Excellent! My husband had the corned beef hash, corned beef forward, with 2 poached eggs and a biscuit. We had a side of fruit: Excellent quality raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, bananas and some sliced red and green apples. The Bloody Mary cocktails were tasty. Make sure and add a slice of bacon. (Thick and meaty). The other items on the menu looked delicious as well. Eggs Benedict, an egg scramble, crab cake on brioche. The pork chop was so tender and flavorful and I really liked the oyster mushrooms on the side. The spicy greens tasted interesting (not my fave) but it was fresh. It was a large group (my friend made a reservation for 20), and I would say the waiters and waitresses did a great job. 5 stars for the service. They kept refilling our water, checking up on us, etc. The food and drinks are a little more on the pricier side (my glass of white wine was $16). I had the truffle mushroom flatbread which was VERY delicious. I would definitely order it again. This was my 1st time back to the restaurant post pandemic. I've walked passed this place many times the past few years while out on Castro street but never actually ate inside. So when my friend asked if I wanted to have brunch there, I was like sure why not. I checked the reviews beforehand and though hmm, how bad could it be? Let me tell you, it wasn't terrible, but it was not great by any means. I would give it 2.5/5 stars. It is overpriced, the food is bland and lacks finesse, and service was borderline acceptable. 1) Food. So I was debating between two dishes on the menu and I asked the waiter and he recommended to try the corn beef hash. He was raving about it so I was like ok, I'll try that. He should know what he's talking about right? Hmmmm no. Apparently not! So I ordered that and really wish I hadn't. The food was edible and acceptable for a restaurant dish but it certainly lacked flavor, presentation and overall taste. The potatoes felt like they were stone cold frozen and reheated in the microwave. The hollandaise sauce tasted very plain and the biscuit lacked salt and flavor. I was able to eat it as I mixed everything together but man do they need to work on their dishes. 2) Drinks: We wanted to treat ourselves to a nice drink so we ordered the Bellini. For $13 you'd expect them to put some kind of garnish like fruit or something inside but the drink I ordered did NOT match up to the price, same as the food. I would not recommend that drink. I could have made it myself at home ten times better then that drink. 3) Service: As soon as I walked in I was asked "can I help you m'am?" Which is pretty unprofessional. As a hostess or whoever is greeting needs to be more friendly and welcoming, and not looking as if they have a plane to catch or I'm a customer shopping at the mall. Ugh it did not leave the best impression. The waiter was also not very chatty, which is fine, he seemed like he just wanted to do his job and that's that. I did appreciate them checking in on us if we needed anything but maybe a bit too much as the point where a staff member almost took my friends half eaten plate when she wasn't even finished. So all in all, I'd say do yourself a favor and go eat somewhere else on Castro and save yourself an "acceptance restaurant experience". Scratch remains a solid three-star establishment. It's a pity, because the place has HUGE potential. Unfortunately, the owners seem to have no vision beyond milking the place for any profit they can, at the expense of pretty much any vision or consideration for staff. You walk in and can tell immediately that the owners DGAF. The staff DGAF, they're not paid to. Evidence of this is everywhere, from the menu whose basic format hasn't changed in over a decade, to the fact that only the shift manager is empowered to solve problems/handle issues. The host stand is located well inside, past the bar just before the tables. Walking in, every staff member ignored us even once we reached the host stand. The one shift manager was apparently the only person allowed to greet customers and sort them out. The rest of the staff? Not my section, not my monkeys, not my circus. The uninspired scallops plate was adequate, albeit confusingly shy of half a scallop. When I tried asking our server if the dish was INTENDED to be served with only 2.5 scallops, they were like deer in headlights, uncertain how to proceed. IT WAS ONLY A QUESTION, not. a complaint! Yet the shift manager had to be called in, who ALSO wasn't interested in determining an answer to the question but preferred to just comp out drinks or dessert. We had honestly not intended to even have another drink and initially refused, but another round was sent regardless. Still a tad peckish, we ordered the brussels sprout starter...which of course wasn't comp'd lol. It's just that... every single time we finally decided that the transgressions of the past were certainly no longer an issue, we return only to experience yet another. Experienced staff who actually GAF cost more. You get the people you pay for. You take care of your staff, they take care of your business. You hire on the cheap and treat them like infants, and you get staff who ignore customers when they walk in and plate half a scallop because they simply aren't paid enough to care. read more

Had the steak and eggs with the cubed hash browns. Which was amazing. Had the calamari, the sauce inside the dish was delicious. The deviled egg lobster was good but I probably won't order it again. I'm reviewing Scratch just based on the food served under a corporate function/event/dinner only. I am not reviewing Scratch based on the price point or service under normal and ordinary circumstances. I will just get this out of the way, the vibes in this restaurant was nice. Relaxing, but upbeat. With my disclaimer above, I thought the food was done pretty well considering there were three tables of approximately 20 people per table gathered for a 3 hour dinner service that included a salad starter, 3 different appetizers, 3 different main courses, and a classic creme brulee dessert. I thought the food was done well and actually exceeded my expectations. The Market Fish was nice and tender, the Southern Fried Chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and the Grilled Prime Filet Steak was melt in our mouth well done. The Creme Brulee was tasty and done with the classic taste. I can't comment too much on the appetizers because I arrived a bit late, but the food was good! read more

Last night (6/7) I ordered the fried chicken and it was dry and the crust was so very hard and unpleasant. It was as though my order was a leftover mistake and refried to heat. The cornbread too was overcooked. At $34 for chicken, one should expect perfection. The fam and I finally made it back here after 6.5 years! This time, we dropped by for Valentine's Day dinner. Their regular menu was updated with a few specials for that special day. The restaurant was crowded so we were not sure what to expect. Based on our experience, the staff was not prepared to handle the restaurant at its full capacity. We came away disappointed. 1) Upon being seated, we were greeted and provided our menus. Our drink orders were taken. No one offered bread service so we had to ask. 2) We asked for Iced Teas with lemon, but it took several requests/reminders before we received the lemons. We were told the kitchen was cutting more lemons. 3) For appetizers/starters, we ordered their Clam Chowder and Citrus Burrata Salad. Both were disappointing. As Clara used to say in the Wendy's commercial, "Where's the ----?" The chowder was basically potato soup with a few clams. The salad contained 3-4 thin slices of Burrata. I would recommend they call it an Arugula Salad. 4) While leisurely eating our appetizers/starters, the staff brought over our entrees. Being shocked at the sight of them, we moved our appetizers/starters to the side to make room for the new additions. One of the staff members asked if we were done (with the apps/starters) while trying to take them away. Hello!!!! On the plus side, both the Seared Salmon Mojo and Poppyseed Crusted Ahi Tuna were delicious. However, the Ahi Tuna had a bit of heat which was not mentioned in the menu's description. And oh, the side of Cornbread With Black Pepper Honey was the best part of the meal. It could have served as our dessert! read more

I especially want to highlight Isaiah, the manager, who went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. He was attentive, friendly, and extremely helpful throughout our visit. It's rare to find someone who genuinely cares about the guest experience the way he does. Because of him and the wonderful staff, this has become one of my favorite places to dine.
