Had an after-dinner drink to celebrate a buddy's milestone birthday. He already had Bar Underdog in mind. I knew it was on California Ave. This was an old haunt of mine back when The Edge dance club was the place to be in this part of Palo Alto. Over the years I had still visited the area for its restaurants and the old camera store Keeble & Shuchat (closed for many years). Stepping into the very dark bar lit by small candles on the table I was immediately reminded at how old I was. It would say it was intimate, but it was a bit too loud to be that. However, it did have an intimate vibe. This joint's specialty (I assumed) was a menu full of house drinks. Sadly, I did not recognize any of them. I went with "You Should Try It" and it was fine. I could not describe what it tasted like, other than it was a mixed drink. My buddy ordered a "Vesper" but it didn't seem like the one Daniel Craig ordered in "Casino Royale". Bar Underdog is first come first serve, they don't take reservations. Lots of seats at the u shaped bar, but can also get pretty packed. We tried to get here before the end of happy hour which is kinda early, at 5:30pm. Drinks are interesting and different, everything on the menu from the bites to drinks have a little Japanese fusion or influence going on. We pretty much tried every small plate on the menu. Most of it was delicious, a couple were just meh (katsu was not anything special, not was the duck meatball). Other than that, and over all, would highly recommend this spot in general. Loved the cocktails ,they were seriously amazing and definitely strong in the best way. We tried the Pickle Juice and the No34, and No34 was my favorite. The mochiko chicken was sooo good, just wish the portion was a little bigger. The tables are extremely close together, to the point where it almost feels like you're sitting with the people next to you But honestly, if they spaced them out more, there would barely be any seating and the wait would probably be much longer. I've now been here a couple times, and both were wonderful. It's a modern, high end, elegantly lit cocktail bar that is absolutely packed on weekend nights. Right to it since there are tons of reviews already: - The cocktails are all over the map, covering a wide range of spirits, sweetness and spice levels. Between a few rounds shared by a few groups, I've tasted a decent fraction of the menu. I'd rate the "Has Been" - with Japanese whiskey and mango eau de vie - the most successful overall. None of the other most popular or famous offerings was bad, but some were mixed in a way that allowed one ingredient to dominate the others. (Based on our receipt order order included Chilly Wonka, the Old Soul, Fru-Ti' Punch and You Should Try It... though I seem to remember the YSTI being good too.) My advice is to go with what looks good here, not with what's popular - except for the Has Been. - It's worth getting here before the kitchen closes because what they call the "Crisped" might be the best small chicken dish between SF and SJ. The menu doesn't offer say much about it other than it's "mochiko" chicken with Taiwanese spice and kanzuri-kewpie (I guess I know Kewpie is a Japanese mayo?). It was served unbelievably juicy and piping hot and it almost reminded me of the famous fatty chicken meatballs from Nojo in SF or the best chicken pieces from Sumika in Los Altos. Our group wound up placing a second order for this even though we weren't even that hungry. Do it! The other food items were tasty too... the buckwheat waffles were a winner and the humorously named nut appetizer was good too. But nothing can touch that chicken. read more

This spot is lovely and the drinks are solid. Only downside is there's no reservations so expect to wait in line to get seated. The servers are more hands off so we were a little confused at first. It'd be more helpful if they checked in more, especially if the line is decently long. The drinks are super unique and phenomenal. Using that language sets up an expectation that neither the ambiance nor the vibe is able to live up to. I can only assume that those reviews that commend this place as a speakeasy have never actually been to a real speakeasy and are more accustomed to box restaurants and bars. I sat at the bar and ordered a bourbon neat with a water back. There were three staff members behind the bar, none of them were particularly friendly or outgoing, which as someone who worked in the industry for years is surprising as a new establishment. Even though it was happy hour time, it was a Wednesday the place was less than half full and good servers /bartenders normally add to the experience and help creat a customer base of regulars to sustain business after the "come see" crowd is over. I ordered d' nuts as a snack and they weren't very special, even a bit overcooked / burnt. Maybe this place is exciting for a Palo Alto crowd that doesn't get out much, especially on the stretch of California given the lack of competition. My guess is that after a few months they will be hard-pressed to find a steady crowd. read more

One of a more upscale bar that use long cube of ice for their highballs. I'm a highball drinker and most of the time bars don't have the right way for you. I think it's kind of funny that there is such a discourse amongst other reviews about whether or not this place is a speakeasy. As a speakeasy enthusiast myself I definitely agree to the fact that it is "hidden" but also it does kinda give corporate vibes a little bit - maybe we can say they "gentrified" the speakeasy experience which is honestly so funny for Palo Alto. But anyways I don't think a classification should stop you from visiting it. The food is actually surprisingly really good. We came with a pescatarian and honestly while the offerings for snacks were a bit slim, every option was really good. I feel like this was the first time where I understood the price even the the quantity is no where close to be desired. One shrimp is like $6 and I was like whoah. Service is definitely more laid back and it's overall just like a more chill atmosphere. I'm fortunate to work nearby so I'll definitely visit this place a few times after work to blow off some steam... And the drinks! Yes they are good! They are also quite strong! New hidden treasure of a speakeasy bar with tasty food bites in Palo Alto on the corner of California and Birch. Food: fave were the wood ear mushrooms with burrata followed by the tuna tartare and amberjack tostada. The wood ear mushrooms were really bright and refreshing with the Meyer lemon and cilantro- unexpected combo that works well. Love the crispy balls and citrus in the tartare. Just the right balance of citrus with cream. The mochiko chicken was fresh and tasty with the lime wedge and spicy kewpie mayo. Spirit free Alibi and Salty & Sober were both very refreshing and unique. Cocktails: No. 34 was a favorite as well as off menu Lychee Citrus cocktail (Angela's special). If you like tequila, Not Your Grandmother's is your cocktail. The XXX with champagne pearls is a unique drink - like boba but champagne! Very cool bar with great music. From the outside, the place is a bit underwhelming, almost mysterious, and you can't quite tell if it's an old bank or a shuttered corporate building. But step inside, and it turns out to be a surprisingly vibey little spot. We stopped in on a Friday evening and we're sat immediately at a cozy two top next to the bar. Our server was incredibly friendly, drinks were delicious. My fiancée enjoyed the menu and variety of offerings. I had a delicious spirit-free cocktail called the alibi and we ended our evening by sharing a dark chocolate pudding/hojicha. We both wished the hojicha flavor came through a bit more. I've been to this bar twice. The first time, we were seated at a table, and the drinks and service were on point, so we decided to come back. Yesterday, however, all the tables were full, so we walked up to the bar since there was a chair available at the end. I sat down, and my boyfriend stood next to me because there was plenty of space for another person to sit. We noticed there was an empty chair nearby and asked if we could move it next to me. The bartender said no, which was fine. A little later, the bartender placed a cocktail directly in front of me. I assumed it was my drink and picked it up. A blonde woman then yelled at me, saying that I had taken another customer's drink. Apparently, that area was the pickup area for completed drinks, and they also didn't want us moving the chair because it would interfere with that area. She claimed that I moved my chair, and BTW I didn't move the chair to save a space for my bf. She did not do her job well keeping the area clean and tidy. But how are customers supposed to know how your bar operates if none of this is clearly communicated? There was no sign or explanation indicating that the area was a pickup zone. Instead of yelling at a customer for an honest mistake, the bartender could have simply explained it politely. The experience was completely different from my first visit, and unfortunately, the service this time left a very bad impression. We won't visit anymore. read more

Underdog is a new cocktail bar from the owners of Protégé in Palo Alto. There is no sign on the outside and with the tinted windows, you can't see how many people are inside. The waitresses were attentive and seated us right away. There's an assortment of booths and high tops along with the central bar. There is a savory menu of appetizers and entrees. We ordered a tuna tartare with crisp onion chips and a burdock and carrot dip with sprouted lentils, togarashi and two pieces of buttered sesame toast. For my first cocktail I tried a Suntory Toki Whisky Highball. I couldn't see the actual Toki Highball tower machine because someone was sitting right in front of it. Normally highball machines provide carbonation with finer bubbles than you'd get from a conventional soda machine. It was nice and chilled with a clear Collins-style ice cube. The flavor was exactly how you'd expect a Toki Highball to taste. For my second cocktail, I ordered a Fru-Ti Punch. It came in a highball glass and Collins ice cube wrapped in a thin ribbon of papaya leaf. I expected something a bit more colorful with papaya and lychee but it was completely clear. The first sip was unexpectedly earthy. Later, Chris the head bartender at Protégé told me that it was the Beerenauslese, a type of wine from Germany. This is a definition that I found online: 'Beerenauslese (literally "individual berry selection") is a wine made from hand-selected individual grapes that have been affected by botrytis cinerea or 'noble rot', a fungus that dehydrates the berries and adds a unique honeyed flavor to the wines. This rare condition in the vineyard allows for the extraction of very concentrated flavors and sugars in the tiny amount of dehydrated juice of the affected grapes. The resulting wine is extremely rich, dense and viscous with a unique profile." After the startling initial sip, I settled into the flavor and was able to finish the remainder. We ended up crossing the street to sit at the bar of Protégé' where we ordered rosé oysters and milk bread. I was also glad to see one of my all-time favorite cocktails "Goose Got Me Loose" still on their cocktail menu. I look forward to returning to Underdog to try some of the mezcal and tequila cocktails. It's nice to have another creative cocktail bar on the Peninsula, joining the recently opened Horsefeather and Eylan. read more

We ordered drinks when we arrived and a worker let us know when someone was vacating the bar so we could grab their stools which was much appreciated! We ordered two of the house cocktails, both of which were strong and tasty. We also got a shochu highball since it was happy hour (only $10!) which was much better than I expected though I wouldn't pay full price for it. This is my second time here, mainly because I really enjoyed everything here my first time around. But on a busy Friday, their service system entirely breaks down. After around 20 mins wait, it was finally our turn and a booth cleared up. But instead of letting us get seated, they seated an existing table which asked to be moved to that booth. Fine. We will settle for the table they moved from. But 5 mins, 10 mins passed. Instead of seating us, to get the long queue (5+ people behind us) moving, three or four servers walked right past us, not even batting an eye at the queue. The most irrational thing was that the servers would wipe the table again, take orders, go to the cash register to talk with one another, and move all five chairs ever so slightly (!) without offering to bring anyone to the empty table right in front of the queue! It doesn't take someone with an economics degree to realize that it makes no sense. So finally we seated ourselves, prompted by the 2 diners behind us. Within 3 mins, the waiters went to the line and seated the people right behind us! So now we're wondering, was that personal? Did they just don't like us, and decided to skip us? Not just that but they also seemed unhappy when interacting with us, after we seated ourselves, having been ignored and confused so long. It was such an odd and most uncomfortable situation to be in. While I enjoyed the drink, and I think the bartenders have done a great job, the service and experience were made very unpleasant by entirely avoidable conducts. Is it possible that they're treating us like that because they have a monopoly over the bar scene in calave? I certainly hope it was just a one off incident. read more

Highlights: - Happy hour: 4-5:30 weekdays--including Fridays. Includes a set of $10 drinks which is a steal for the bay area. Includes one of my fave cocktails (vesper) so I was super excited about that. - Cocktails: quality and a choice between classic like the vesper or high balls and special ones like the XXX and a bunch of others. - Sodas: they make their own which I think is super cool - Vibe: energetic and classy--not stuffy. Nice staff. - Nuts: tasty warm snack while you enjoy your beverage. 4 stars - Raw fish tostada: complex but fresh mix of flavors and texture. 4 stars - Mochiko chicken: standard flavors and textures was fine. 3.5 stars - Cocktail option on California: not too many but more opening up lately. We like to explore different restaurants and bars around the Peninsula, but for a long time Palo Alto has had a very specific gap. There are good bars inside good restaurants. There are places where you can get a solid cocktail while waiting for a table. But there hasn't really been a place that fully commits to being a great bar first. A place that takes cocktails seriously, pairs them with thoughtful small plates, and isn't trying to force you into a full sit-down dining experience. So when Bar Underdog announced it was opening, and it became clear that it's essentially Protégé's cocktail-forward outpost, we were super excited. And given that it's walking distance from us, it's honestly surprising it took us this long to finally make it there. We're very glad we did. We did what we often do at places that seem capable of it: we went with dealer's choice and put ourselves in the hands of our bartender, Diego. From the start, it was clear we had made the right call. For the first round, I had Pickle Juice and my wife had XXX. For the second, she had Has Been and I had Not Your Grandmother's.... Across all four, what stood out was how balanced and intentional everything felt. Each drink had a clear point of view, but none felt gimmicky or overworked. They were layered without being heavy, creative without being confusing, and consistently easy to enjoy. You could tell real thought had gone into how they fit together over the course of an evening. We were seated at the bar, and even on a busy night, Diego checked in regularly, talked us through each drink and dish, and kept the conversation going. He seemed genuinely excited about doing dealer's choice and clearly took pride in curating the experience. There was a lot of easy banter along the way, and it never felt rushed or transactional. It felt like he was having fun putting it together, and we were having fun being along for the ride. He knocked it out of the park. The food matched that same sensibility. Everything we had was strong. But the biggest surprise was the sesame toast with burdock and carrot dip. It was unexpectedly deep and interesting, and easily something we'd come back for on its own. The tuna tartare was clean and fresh up front, light and bright at first, and then finished with a gentle kick of spice that built slowly on the back end. The mochiko chicken was richly spiced (Szechuan and cinnamon?!?) with a delicious dip The ribs and turkey wing (current special) were both tender, and had complex but not overpowering seasoning. We finished with the waffle, which was exactly what it should be: light, comforting, and a perfect way to close out the meal. Bar Underdog feels like it's on track to become a destination for the entire Bay Area. It's that good. The drinks, the food, and the experience all work at a level that stands up anywhere. Spending the evening at the bar, letting the menu unfold through Diego's choices, was genuinely fun. We'll absolutely be back. And we're glad that Palo Alto finally has a place like this. read more

The drink selection is really solid -- plenty of choices whether you're sticking with a simple well drink or going for something top shelf. We came to visit bar underdog Saturday night around 8:30, there was no line but by the time we left around 11, there were a many couples waiting for a seat. The food and drinks are absolutely phenomenal. We tried the burdock and carrot spread over the sesame toast, the lamb skewers, the poached shrimp, fried chicken, tostada's, and ribs. And the cookie miso chocolate cookie. Any one of them would have been incredible on their own, holy moly. The drinks were also all so unique and delicious. We had the Has Been, You Should Try It, Floating, and No. 34. And the Japanese Ichigo beer. I'm certain that any cocktail would have been a winner, the folks behind the menu clearly know exactly what they're doing, and unsurprisingly, because they're the owners of Protege across the street. The vibes are immaculate, gorgeous wood paneling in the space, with perfect ambient warm lighting that highlights the menu and food just right. My husband literally said, after we left, that if this was his last meal he could die happy. I hope that convinces people on the fence about visiting, show up early and have your dinner here! read more

This is the new bar in the old Calave space that was opened by the Protege team. At 5pm on a Friday, it was completely packed, and I snagged the last 3 seats at the bar. After this, it was standing room only plus a line out the door. Standing room is ok for drinks, but then you can't order food. Despite how busy it was, the bar team kept up great, and I was impressed with our bartender's ability to talk to us, make drinks at a quick speed, and take food orders. Happy hour is from 4-5:30pm, and classic drinks are only $10, which is a hot deal. Otherwise, classics are $15, and the regular cocktials are $18. Drinks: - Omijarita: a margerita with imo shochu and omija - well balanced and with a nice salt rim - Fru-ti' punch: tiki but not too sweet, not too heavy on the lychee, well balanced, served with a nice, clear ice cube Food: Small plates but enough for a dinner! We got one of everything on the menu except the nuts. - Korean corn cheese puffs: with smoked mozzarella and pickled jalapeno. 2 per order, like a smoky gourgere, great arm - Burdock and carrot dip: an umami dip topped with sprouted lentils and togarashi, served with buttered sesame toast (2 slices but pretty big slices) - Tuna tartare: with plum miso, avocado, and super thin sweet onion chips that were great even on their own - Heirloom tomatoes: with cucumber and a great sunflower seed chili crunch that was like a nutty XO sauce - Steamed A5 wagyu shumai: 2 per order, with pickled mustard seed and a mild chili - Mochiko chicken: freshly fried, tons of flavor, not dry at all, with kewpie on the side - Matcha brownie: great matcha flavor, good texture - Yuzu pudding: not too sweet, just the right amount of yuzu balanced with the creamy pudding Since none of the dishes are that big, prices aren't too bad for the dishes. Most dishes are best for two people to split. All the food was on point - interesting flavors, great execution. I'm super impressed with the drinks, food, and service, especially since they just opened not too long ago. came for happy hour right around 4, was able to get a table! the server who helped our party was extremely prompt, and the food was surprisingly perfect with the drinks our table ordered. i wonder if they'll be willing to sell the sunflower chili crisp on its own! one thing to note is that it's very loud in the bar. but the price of happy hour is really attractive. read more

Overcrowded, overpriced, and overrated. A gin and tonic with one cucumber slice was charged as a "specialty drink."

Love this place. Intimate atmosphere, friendly service and the one drink I had with egg white was on point. Very well executed!
