This is a stylish and buzzing bar near downtown Palo Alto that plays cool tunes. Drinks - Pickle Juice & Has Been ($18) Snacks - These were all A+ and nice light bites to pair with the drinks. Tuna Hand Rolls ($18) Tostones ($9?) Shrimp Skewer Things (I can't find them on the menu anymore) We came around 7 pm and closed the place down! The drinks are excellent/craft and bites are high quality, unique and yummy! The staff are cool and attentive :)

This place was buzzing - awesome vibe - people come coming to hang out - maybe grab a small bite. We only had the cookie, which was warmed to perfection. The cocktails were out of this world! The ingredients just worked! We were 8 friends and tried almost all the cocktails. The staff seemed like there weren't enough of them - it was hard to make eye contact and get the menu for our round 2 of orders. But despite all that chaos and noise, they were managing the priorities and tables for the guests. There was an owner / supervisor that was around as well. Small and cozy place - noisy, as it's a bar - so don't go if you want to have a deep conversation:) but go if you want to try some unique cocktails. My fav were, number 34, has been, xxx and CPR.

Fun drinks and great vibes. We didn't get any food but they had some good looking dishes pass by so we'll need to come back to try them out! The decor really leans into the underdog theme and the servers were great. We look forward to coming back!

This spot is lovely and the drinks are solid. Only downside is there's no reservations so expect to wait in line to get seated. The servers are more hands off so we were a little confused at first. It'd be more helpful if they checked in more, especially if the line is decently long. The drinks are super unique and phenomenal. You can taste each flavor one after another, and the after taste is clean. We will definitely be back to try more drinks! Servers are very attentive with constant water refills and just pleasant overall. You may want to come earlier on the weekend!

New hidden treasure of a speakeasy bar with tasty food bites in Palo Alto on the corner of California and Birch. Food: fave were the wood ear mushrooms with burrata followed by the tuna tartare and amberjack tostada. The wood ear mushrooms were really bright and refreshing with the Meyer lemon and cilantro- unexpected combo that works well. Love the crispy balls and citrus in the tartare. Just the right balance of citrus with cream. The mochiko chicken was fresh and tasty with the lime wedge and spicy kewpie mayo. Spirit free Alibi and Salty & Sober were both very refreshing and unique. Cocktails: No. 34 was a favorite as well as off menu Lychee Citrus cocktail (Angela's special). If you like tequila, Not Your Grandmother's is your cocktail. The XXX with champagne pearls is a unique drink - like boba but champagne! Very cool bar with great music. Sophia was a very attentive server. Fabulous place for a date or drinks and some small bites with friends or colleagues. Two unisex bathrooms that were clean is a plus!

Big city vibes in a Palo Alto setting. Such a great bar to visit for a night cap. It's actually feels like less of a bar and more of a speakeasy or cocktail lounge. The service is always on point and makes potent drinks. Shoutout to Jordan who makes great drinks and is always composed under pressure. The atmosphere is great for dates, small group of friends, social events, and team gatherings. You cannot go wrong here. This is truly the best addition to Palo Alto in a while. No need to go to SF or SJ anymore because these guys have brought such a great atmosphere, drink quality, and world class staff to your backyard.

From the outside, the place is a bit underwhelming, almost mysterious, and you can't quite tell if it's an old bank or a shuttered corporate building. But step inside, and it turns out to be a surprisingly vibey little spot. We stopped in on a Friday evening and we're sat immediately at a cozy two top next to the bar. Our server was incredibly friendly, drinks were delicious. My fiancée enjoyed the menu and variety of offerings. I had a delicious spirit-free cocktail called the alibi and we ended our evening by sharing a dark chocolate pudding/hojicha. We both wished the hojicha flavor came through a bit more. Overall a wonderful experience.

Bar Underdog was busy but not overcrowded late on a Saturday night. We ordered drinks when we arrived and a worker let us know when someone was vacating the bar so we could grab their stools which was much appreciated! We ordered two of the house cocktails, both of which were strong and tasty. We also got a shochu highball since it was happy hour (only $10!) which was much better than I expected though I wouldn't pay full price for it. The bar staff seemed to be highly skilled and certainly knew how to make a quality drink. Note that the kitchen closes promptly at 11pm if you're looking for a snack.

Underdog is a new cocktail bar from the owners of Protégé in Palo Alto. There is no sign on the outside and with the tinted windows, you can't see how many people are inside. The waitresses were attentive and seated us right away. There's an assortment of booths and high tops along with the central bar. There is a savory menu of appetizers and entrees. We ordered a tuna tartare with crisp onion chips and a burdock and carrot dip with sprouted lentils, togarashi and two pieces of buttered sesame toast. For my first cocktail I tried a Suntory Toki Whisky Highball. I couldn't see the actual Toki Highball tower machine because someone was sitting right in front of it. Normally highball machines provide carbonation with finer bubbles than you'd get from a conventional soda machine. It was nice and chilled with a clear Collins-style ice cube. The flavor was exactly how you'd expect a Toki Highball to taste. For my second cocktail, I ordered a Fru-Ti Punch. It came in a highball glass and Collins ice cube wrapped in a thin ribbon of papaya leaf. I expected something a bit more colorful with papaya and lychee but it was completely clear. The first sip was unexpectedly earthy. Later, Chris the head bartender at Protégé told me that it was the Beerenauslese, a type of wine from Germany. This is a definition that I found online: 'Beerenauslese (literally "individual berry selection") is a wine made from hand-selected individual grapes that have been affected by botrytis cinerea or 'noble rot', a fungus that dehydrates the berries and adds a unique honeyed flavor to the wines. This rare condition in the vineyard allows for the extraction of very concentrated flavors and sugars in the tiny amount of dehydrated juice of the affected grapes. The resulting wine is extremely rich, dense and viscous with a unique profile." After the startling initial sip, I settled into the flavor and was able to finish the remainder. We ended up crossing the street to sit at the bar of Protégé' where we ordered rosé oysters and milk bread. I was also glad to see one of my all-time favorite cocktails "Goose Got Me Loose" still on their cocktail menu. I look forward to returning to Underdog to try some of the mezcal and tequila cocktails. It's nice to have another creative cocktail bar on the Peninsula, joining the recently opened Horsefeather and Eylan.

The service was excellent as the waiters frequently checked on us and refilled our water, wiped the table and cleared the plates. I got 2 quesobirria tacos and 2 tacos al pastor, and visually everything looked on point -- the plating was clean, tacos looked well-stuffed, and the birria tortillas had that nice golden crisp. But once we started eating, we all felt the same thing: the salsas were lacking flavor. And with tacos like these, good salsa takes everything to the next level. Here, it kind of held them back. They only gave me two tiny lime pieces, and I couldn't even get enough juice out of them to brighten up the tacos. Something so simple, but it makes a huge difference. We also asked for chips and salsa (they're not free), and they never came. Honest mistake -- they were cool about it and took it off the bill -- but still, it added to the overall experience. Another thing: the nopales weren't well cooked or prepped. They had that slightly tough, raw texture instead of the tender, seasoned bite they should have. Flavor-wise, the pastor and birria were decent, but with weak salsa and barely any lime, it felt incomplete. All four of us agreed on the same thing: This place could be great if they tighten up their salsas and the little details. I'd give them another shot someday because the base is there -- they just need that extra punch of flavor to really elevate their tacos.

I was the Designated Driver so I ordered an Iced Tea while others in the group ordered expensive double whiskeys and top shelf cocktails, The owner of the bar comes up to me and says, and I quote, " I paid 1.5 million dollars for this bar, you can't come in here and order iced tea, It's not a coffee shop, you need to order something more expensive" Despite a lifetime of experience of ordering food and drink, apparently I ,the customer, ordered wrong. Not having Iced Tea at a bar is like not having vanilla at Baskin Robbins. There are non-alcoholic drinks here which I was well aware of, but mocktails are usually full of sugar or zero-proof alcohols which often taste like salted donkey anus, So that's not happening with me. After taking a second to process, I put 2 & 2 together and thought this was a money issue, So I said "I don't care, charge me whatever, but I would like an iced tea" and the response from the owner was " I don't care, GO FUCK YOURSELF, GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY BAR" as he pulled all of the entire groups drinks back over the bar and started gesticulating wildly. At which point further "Pleasantries" were exchanged across the bar and at the end of it all no additions to police records were incurred and we parted ways. This gatekeeping and aggressively inappropriate behavior seemed wildly incongruent with the mantra of "What would Jerry do" ( Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead ). Regardless, I am never going there again, nor their sister restaurant Bistro Vida. This pretentious, overpriced, clown show of a venue can collapse in on itself as far as I care. The bars decor of cosplaying as a secretive 1920's speakeasy burnishes the venue's lack of differentiation which is in direct conflict with the bars new money aspirations of being elite or exclusive. The ridiculous idea that the owner spent X dollars necessitates you ,the customer, spending Y dollars breaks all social conventions that I have known throughout my entire life. There is no reason for a host/owner to behave like a foul mouthed spoiled child when asked for the basest of requests. The kicker is that this is not new behaviour from the owner and has been a long running aspect of the business https://yelp.to/rVUTLHQ53y ( review from 9 months from my encounter ) I refuse to support businesses that don't respect their customers. Everything was well-presented and aesthetically-pleasing, service was on point, and they checked upon our large party often. The restaurant itself is well-decorated, with nice photographs on the wall; request for the tufted seating, as it's more comfortable. +attentive staff +a la carte and tasting menu offered +reservations accepted
