4 1/2 Stars? Best German restaurant in the Bay Area? Those are some pretty big claims, so my wife and I were intrigued about all the hype and figured we would give it a try. First off, it is a festive atmosphere during World Cup, and lots of outdoor seating with a friendly and energetic staff. And they have a nice selection of great (yet pricey) beer (half-liter for $9). But it pretty much ends there... having been to Germany dozens of times, and loving German food, I had high hopes that this would become a go-to place for us, but...I had the sausage plate, my wife had the schnitzel and both were really mediocre and far below what you will experience at SupenKuche in the City, or Speisekammer in Alameda. Sausages were house-made but weird. They were meaty but not very tasty, with an odd texture, and the casings had no "snap" like you would expect, especially with the Nuremberg sausages. The red cabbage was pretty bland, like it didn't have the right amount of vinegar in it. The Schnitzel was greasy and not very tasty... I received a Jaegerschnitzel that was not visible due to the mountain of white mystery cream sauce slopped on top. Upon cutting, it was clear that the cooks had not bothered to pound the meat; it was a pork thick pork cutlet which is not how it's supposed to be served The microwaved spatzle actually had mozzarella cheese mixed in. My son had a burger that was mediocre at best with frozen bagged fries. I hate to be negative, but this restaurant lacks passion and dedication. This is a good spot to grab a beer and chill. I've tried food here a couple times. Most recently I ordered the spicy chicken schnitzel. It was crispy and reminded me of katsu. The portion was huge but I found chicken quite plain even with the spicy sauce. The lingonberry gave it a boost with some contrasting sweetness. I thought the spatzel was pretty nice. The waiter we had was an older man who was very friendly and made a few jokes as small talk as he handed off our food and drinks (turkish tea, pretzel, draft beer/cider). For entrees, you must order inside and you are greeted with a large menu of turkish/german cuisines. While I would come again for the draft beers and beer garden vibe alone, I had to try the pretzel. It appeared to be a pretty authentic bavarian soft pretzel from looks alone, and the texture was soft with a bit of a solid crust. We called a few days ahead and let them know we'd have a group of 30 for Friday Happy Hour. When we arrived we were immediately greeted by Eden who had our table ready and answered any questions we had. We elected to go for self service at the bar since it was easier than splitting all those checks. Waiting in line was consistently under 5 minutes and all of our food came out hot and delicious. Harder to sit inside with a larger group of 7 but we made it work. Order food at the cashier, but can get drinks and dessert from the QR code on the table. I got a spicy schnitzel and it was delicious. My friends got burgers, bratwursts, and a few beers. They said the first round of drinks they got tasted more like water than beer, but were happy with the food and second round of drinks. It also took over an hour or two before I took the plates up to the bar since they weren't been taken from our table but it was a busy night so we didn't mind. Das Bierhauz has excellent German cuisine! I have been here multiple times now, and I definitely plan on coming back! They have some of the best German food in the Bay Area I've had, especially the Schnitzel and Spaetzle! Those are our favorites and I get them every time, and they never disappoint! The mushroom sauce on the Jaeger Schnitzel is also incredible, and I'd encourage anyone to give it a try! The whole area is a great area to walk around and hang out, and Das Bierhauz hangs on the side with a nice open seating area to relax in. I had a pretty disappointing experience, a friend got me a gift card online for Das Bierhauz, so me, my wife and daughter came here for dinner. I ordered our food and when I tried to use the gift card to pay it kept getting denied, come to find out the gift card is for their Redwood City location, which is affiliated but they don't accept the same types of payment I guess. That seems like a major flaw in their system and should be made clear when gift cards are purchased. The food was ok pub food but in my opinion not worth the money. A kids cheeseburger is $16. Which is $1 less than a regular cheeseburger. Most expensive child's burger I've come across. I ordered a Das Burger and my wife ordered the Beef Bratwurst. The Das Burger is filled with beef patty, turkey bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and pickles in between a brioche bun. The beef bratwurst consists of beef sausage, garnished onion, mustard, and pickles. Both are served with fries and sauerkraut. Their fries are really good. Hot and crispy.
