Came here this weekend to celebrate Oktoberfest! I wanted to get some German beer and Wursthall was the closest location to us at the time. Although this was not my favorite German restaurant in the Bay Area, it was convenient in San Mateo. Sad they would be permanently closed down this week! My family and I decided to come here one last time instead of going to my favorite German restaurants in SF or in RWC so we could enjoy one last beer, wurst sausage, and pretzel from Wursthall. The place was packed! We came here a few times and this was the most business we had seen here! The workers were kind and offered two high chairs for us. Instead, we asked to sit in the kid's table so our toddlers could draw and sit in those cute, tiny chairs, while the adults enjoyed the one liter beer in the boot! We ordered the pretzel with pepper and honey! It was tasty! We also got the Porchetta wurst so the kids could eat it. It was good but I preferred the curry one. The place was super lively this past Saturday! Guess everyone wanted to enjoy German beer/food for Oktoberfest too or because they knew Wursthall was closing! The speakeasy bar downstairs was covered by the curtains but heard it was staying. Prices were a bit higher than other German spots. Overall, it was a good closure to try Wursthall one last time!
I've been a fan of Wursthall ever since I moved to the Bay Area! During COVID, I remember watching Kenji's videos filmed in the Wursthall kitchen, so walking in for the first time a few years ago was like a dream. I'd come around pretty frequently to work in the corner with a beer. It's such a nice casual space that also offers really delicious food. The service is always quick and friendly, and the beer selection never disappoints. I'm really going to miss this place when it closes next week. Seeing it absolutely packed this past week has been crazy and so heartwarming - it's amazing to see the hall full and the business getting the love it deserves. Thank you for everything, Wursthall!
When with family friends to farewell Wursthall. Walking in a big hall of all the long table chairs just like the first time, hearing everyone next to you, laughing. Burger, hot dogs, pretzel, and draft beers. If you are planning to go, I believe they only open to the end of the month. Everyone in the restaurant still works really hard, super nice, services arre good. We Ordered Pastrami & Swisswurst with tater tot, loves sauerkraut so this is my pick. Al Pastor is interesting pinapple balance out the spicy. Wood-Fired Pretzel is not very exciting for me, it's not bad but feel like missing something, it's soft inside but not crispy enough. Overall I would say I will miss this place.
Seriously, if you're looking for a fun night out with good vibes, this is it. The place has this awesome, lively beer hall energy that just makes you want to hang out and chill with friends. And the food? Ugh, so good. You absolutely have to get the any one of their house-made sausages. I had the bier wurst and curry wurst, both super flavorful and juicy. Basically, everything feels like really solid, comforting German food but done super well. Plus, their beer list is legit. Like, if you're into beers, the bartenders here will make sure that you'll be happy. And hey, knowing Wunderbar (their cool hidden speakeasy) is just downstairs is a bonus if you're feeling adventurous after dinner!
Wursthall is not your average German beer hall. This casual restaurant serves a menu created in collaboration with cookbook author J. Kenji Lopez-Alt and features bold, flavorful, globally-inspired dishes. My favorite item was the Impossible Turkish-ish Sausage, a housemade vegan sausage spiced with cumin, Urfa Biber chile, and sumac, served in a toasted bun and topped with arugula, sumac onions, pickled chilies, and vegan mayo. The spices added a delicious flavor to the vegan sausage (which was convincingly meaty), and the toppings added a contrasting freshness. Another creative, non-traditional sausage was the Al Pastor Wurst, a pork sausage spiced with cumin, oregano, and chilies, and topped with roasted pineapple and chile aioli. Finally, we had Kenji's Korean Hot Chicken Sandwich, a breaded boneless chicken thigh tossed in chili oil and Korean spices, served with yogurt ranch slaw and pickles on a brioche bun. The chicken thigh was super crunchy and flavorful, and the spicy kick was contrasted by the creamy slaw and crunchy pickles. Each entree came with a choice of side, which was hit-or-miss. The Sauerkraut was overly salty; the Haus Potato Salad was made of (slightly undercooked) potato slices in a mustard, red onion, and dill dressing; but my favorite was the Chickpea & Carrot Salad, a simple but tasty mixture of chickpeas, cucumbers, carrots, red onion, cabbage, and dill in a delicious dressing. We also got a side of their Blackened Ginger Curry Ketchup, which was nicely spiced and far superior to any curry ketchup I've had in Germany! Overall, the food here was a step above by any measure, and everything came at a good value with no frills service (ordering is done solely via QR code). Good-bye, Wursthall! So sad that you're closing, and you will definitely be missed!
wursthall was a great spot for dinner for my family and me! the restaurant was packed and had a great social & cozy vibe. it was very family friendly and looked like there were some team events too! the staff were all extremely friendly and had us seated really quickly. the food was amazing- I ordered the pastrami & swisswurst, which tasted just like a reuben but even better. we also had the bier bratwurst, kenji's korean hot chicken sandwich, sauerkraut kasedilla, and pretzel. everything was great and had amazing flavors, especially all the sauerkraut! overall, would definitely come back for drinks with some friends or to catch a giants game!
Like others, sad to see this place close on 9/27. Always enjoyed the vibe. The food and beers on tap were delicious. The pretzel was always my son's choice. We came back one last time and I had the bier bratwurst. I should've gone with tater tots but it was still tasty. Service was on point even though it was slammed!! We shall need to drive to RWC for good german cuisine now. So long Wurtshall! auf weidersehn!!!
Really chill spot to grab some beer and food with a group of friends. I love how this place has a lot of natural light and has ample seating. Service was great and we got our food right away. Was not the biggest fan of the potato's but the main entrees were memorable.
Usually I come here and order the wursts but this time I ordered the spicy fried chicken sandwich and the portion were huge. There was a lot of coleslaw and the chicken was very spicy but the flavors were there. Also, I got a side of potato salad, and that portion was huge as well. This place also is known for their beers , so don't forget to order a glass of beer with your wurst or entrees!

The atmosphere is cozy, inviting, and perfect for a casual hangout or a lively evening with friends. Favorites: - Radler: The perfect blend of beer and lemon soda, refreshing and delightful. - Quesadilla: The spicy sauce it comes with is absolutely awesome and adds a fantastic kick. - Pretzel: Soft, salty, and served with a delicious dipping sauce. - Sausages: Rotating pool of flavors but they had a chicken and mushroom one that they had when they first opened but haven't come across it in years. That was the best! They also had a speck topping that was killer as well. And don't miss out on the speakeasy downstairs! Wunderbar (Reservations only) It's a Wonderland-themed gem where you can slice into the wonderland experience with creative cocktails and an enchanting ambiance. It's the perfect way to round off a visit to Wursthall. Highly recommend giving this place a try. You won't be disappointed!
It has been a few years and I think that Wursthall has found its stride. The pricing has become more in-line with what society is and I thought it was good quality. Beer list has improved and had many good options to choose from. The environment has found itself as well as it attracted a nice Friday crowd on the rainy day I visited. + The sausages are top notch + Burger was good + Fries were good I do not recommend the Korean hot chicken chicken bites. I felt they were dry and the breading was dry as well leading to just blah dry chicken. I'd go again when in the neighborhood.
Had a late night bite at Wursthall with the husband and group of friends, and was not disappointed! Once you are seated, scan the QR code at the table to order and pay; the husband and I ordered the Smashed Cheeseburger and Pesto Chicken Bratwurst. Food came out quickly, and overall everything tasted well. The Smashed Cheeseburger was fulfilling and tasty, but I have to admit it wasn't anything too spectacular. The Pesto Chicken was good and I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors. The restaurant is spacious and bright with communal tables. Atmosphere was chill yet lively, and staff was friendly. All in all, solid food and vibes.
First things first, that mac& cheese was insanely good. The potato salad was a close 2nd. The food overall gets high marks. The soda has transitioned to be one of my favorite drinks now. One of my friends is a server at Wursthall, and she said it's closing! I had to try it and wanted to be there for her last shift before they permanently closed. Ordered two sausages, two burgers, one salad, and one of each side. Also tried the chicken schnitzel. My only regret is not coming here sooner! It's a very laid back, yet charming spot with high ceilings, beers, bench-tables, and an upstairs! They even played the Giants game on their screens. Everything tasted well-thought out, and the price point was fair. I'm sorry I didn't come sooner, but I'm glad I tried it before it's gone. read more
Sad to hear they're closing on 9/27 I love wursthall and their unique dining experiences and food compared to so many copy and paste restaurants in the bay and even more so in San Mateo. It was always a vibe to grab a beer and/or a bite with friends, sit at the communal table and people watch while splitting a wurst, burger, or app. wursthall and its staff will be missed, I believe the speakeasy will remain though? read more

When you order food here, you order on the QR code and they bring the food over to you once it's ready. Staff is friendly and the service was good. There's plenty of seating and the tables are large enough for big groups I got the chicken schnitzel, deviled eggs, and potato salad. The Chicken schnitzel was very filling and is good enough for at least 2 servings. It was crispy and not dry. The deviled eggs were solid and the potatoes were decent. read more
Drove down here for lunch and had a great time! They have a very good selection of beers and the food itself is very good. Personally, the quesadilla with sauerkraut was something I had never tried but ended up being my favorite thing. I didn't try anything else but the people I was with really enjoyed their burgers so they are doing something right! read more

Taste: 5 Value: 4 Service: 4 Came here for a team dinner in their upstairs area. Had a dedicated server and staff. Food was tasty. Liked the pretzel, deviled eggs, fried chicken, and bratwurst. Chickpea salad was okay. Large beer selection available on tap and also a full bar for cocktails. Tried some of the other sausages and they were all pretty tasty. TVs press out that were setup as split screen to show multiple baseball games playing for the postseason. Could see it as a fun place to eat with friends and watch games. There's also this weird library downstairs before the bathroom. Has animals and figurines in the library and a large mirror. Quirky. read more

this is a very cute beer hall with delicious food! you can order on your phone and the food comes out pretty quickly. I would recommend getting the sausage without the sides and bun. the bratwurst was somewhat oily and salty, but overall really good. the crispy potatoes are fine, but not my favorite. the spicy chicken bites were the star of the meal!! they are super juicy and crunchy and the ranch on the side is amazing!! it's a little pricey but the vibes are fun! read more

Came here on a Thursday at 5pm. We were seated pretty quickly as there were plenty of tables available. As the evening went on, it did get busier and louder. I ordered the bier bratwurst. The sausage was flavorful and I enjoyed the sauerkraut. The bread was a little too much and the potatoes were greasy and bland. The pretzel was delicious. I didn't love the spaetzle and cheese. Overall, nice place to go to with friends or coworkers. read more

Went to this place at 4:30 on a Thursday for a work event. The place is not huge and it has long tables like a German pub. The is also a first floor but it can get crowded because the space is small. When I arrived at 4:30pm, which is when the place opens, I found a spot right outside but I can see how it might be difficult to get parking during peak hours. Most of the people in my group drank beer but I tried the rose, sauvignan blanc and both were terrible, not surprising since this place is a beer hall. The mixed drinks were strong and the beer tasty (I was told). They also has a buffet for our group - pretzels, hot chicken bites, a vegetarian quesadilla filled with sauerkraut and a garbanzo salad. The garbanzo salad and quesadilla were quite bad but the chicken bites and pretzels was hot and very tasty. The highlight of the menu though was the cheese sauce that came with the pretzels. You can eat that on it's own. Not sure I would go back, if I become a beer drinker, I might. read more
Wursthall is a bierhaus with Californian influences. Lots of indoor long tables with benches as well as a couple of outdoor tables. After you are seated by the friendly staff, grab the QR code on your table and place your order and pay right on the spot. Your order will be brought out to you. You can also get your water order in (no charge) along with your food order. If you want dessert, place it when you're just about ready for it, because they make your order right when it's placed. We ordered the chicken schnitzel, deviled eggs, wurst, and not pictured, the spaetzle with cheese. The schnitzel was perfectly breaded, side salad tossed with light lemon dressing. The deviled eggs were delightfully creamy, the spaetzle went well with the schnitzel. Let's just say when I come back, I'm definitely getting the wurst. I didn't think I would like it this much. But I should have known, it is what they should be good at here. I would also like to try Kenji's Korean Hot Chicken bites or the sandwich. After all, even though he is no longer the owner, the recipes are his or "Serious Eats inspired techniques". If you don't know about Serious Eats, just do a search. I'd also like to try to get a reservation to get into their speakeasy, which I think is supposed to be underneath the restaurant. read more
Great spot for bar bites! We grabbed a few items to-go, and they tasted just as good as dining in. Very quick service and chill ambiance. The food was still warm when we got home, which was a nice surprise. 5/5 - Pastrami Sausage - Hands down my favorite! The flavors and seasoning were spot on for the sausage. 2.5/5 - Spicy Sausage - This one was just okay. It lacked the kick I was expecting, and honestly, it tasted a lot like Costco Hot Links. Plus, the toppings made the bread a bit soggy. Wouldn't order again. 4/5 - Curry Sausage + Potatoes - A solid choice! The curry flavor was bold but not overpowering, and the sauces complemented it really well. 4/5 - Pretzels & Beer Sauce - Simple, classic, and delicious! Perfectly salty pretzels with a rich, creamy dip. Would definitely come back for the pastrami sausage and pretzels! read more
Went for Dinner Food - 1/5. Bratwurst was disappointing. The sausage is completely lacking in texture. The meat was way too loose, creating weird air pockets that creates a poor mouthfeel. This is especially bad for a forcemeat like sausage, which is meant to be stuffed to mimic the feel of a whole muscle cut of meat. The looseness did not allow the casing to expand fully, resulting in a gummy, chewy texture. Flavor of the sausage was milder than expected, which did not pair well with the sharpness of the toppings. Both the sauerkraut and the mustard had a strong piquant flavor, way overpowering both the sausage and the bun. It would have been better if the sauerkraut and mustard were placed on the side, rather than placed on top. Fried potatoes were delicious with a perfectly crunchy crust paired with a soft center. Service - 4/5. Ordering and paying is done by QR code so the interaction with servers are minimal. Food came out in good time and service was swift. Value - 1/5. The wursts are $16 each and comes with a choice of side. That is not a terrible price for the area, but given that the wurst was terrible, the money spent felt completely wasted. I have been to a lot of German bars. This place was unique in one way their food selection blew my mind with the amount of creativity they had in there plenty of options, and their sizes are pretty huge. They have a great selection of beer too, but a pro tip. If you sit on a table you can only order and until you order nobody's gonna come check on you to see what you like or make some recommendations. You should go to the bar area and do some tasting before you order on your phone , there's a street parking available on the road so plan your trip accordingly. It's very casual German beer bar. Friday night we just needed some good beers and indulgent food to pair with - you can get both here. It's a clean and spacious interior. It's also one of those QR code menu and online ordering platforms. Order/Pay and the food will come. No problem here, if you can use your phone, you'll know how to order. It's nice to not need to flag down a server. My favorites were the thrice-fried potatoes, korean chicken sandwich, and the porchetta wurst. Out of all the available sides, the thrice-fried potatoes were the best. If you don't eat anything else, at least eat this! You'll salivate at just how crispy the crust on those things were. Fluffy potato-ey inside, it's what potato lovers dream of. Do yourself a favor and order the currywurst: potatoes topped with wurst and curry ketchup, yum! the potato salad side is a close second -- so creamy and refreshing with a good bite. The Korean chicken sandwich was well seasoned, chicken was crispy, (a little messy to eat from the sauce) but hey.. we are here to get dirty with it.. this is a not a fancy knife and fork place. Porchetta sausage is so good and earthy, definitely paired well with the lemon, fried shallots, and herbs on top. Bacon and sesame sauerkraut is nice and so was the chickpea salad side, although we couldn't finish those.. We got the sauerkraut quesadilla which sounded so genius. If only they added more kraut over the cheese as it gets pretty rich.. To down all this food we got the great notion mighty mango sour and another beer that I can only describe as a sangria type of drink. Not so much a hops or IPA person so I like that they included some fruity/citrusy beers for drinkers like me. I'm much impressed over their wide alcohol selection. Love it! read more

Pretty good! Came here for a casual lunch with friends. The inside is pretty big, with food hall vibes. We got a few appetizers and each got our own entrees. I got the burger with chips. Everything was pretty good. I really enjoyed the pretzel too. read more
Came here at noon on a Saturday for a one-year memorial gathering for my niece with family and friends. Located at the corner of Baldwin and S. B St, the restaurant with its high ceilings is bright and airy. The tables are communal like a German pub. We had the upper level reserved for our gathering. It's a menu less ordering process. You scan the QR code on your table for the menu, order and pay. After ordering, the servers brought the drinks and about ten minutes later, they brought the food order. There were plates, utensils, napkins, cups and a water dispenser along the wall. Our order: Hacker-Pschorr Munchen Dunkel - it was tasty dark German lager beer. One of the few German beers on the menu. Deviled eggs - two or four to an order. Made with Aleppo pepper, dill and mustard. If you love mustard, you will like it with it strong mustard taste. Porchetta Wurst with side of Haus potato salad - a rosemary, fennel, garlic and lemon zest pork sausage in a toasted split top bun topped with lemon gremolata and fried shallots. Potato salad with made with slices of potatoes in a dill mustard dressing. Chicken Schnitzel - two battered fried cutlets with a large house mixed greens dressing with pumpkin seeds in a lemon vinaigrette. The chicken cutlets were very moist and fried to a nice golden brown. Overall, good German beer hall/pub. However, menu is limited than typical German restaurants since dishes like wiener and jager schnitzel and sauerbraten, potato soup and apple strudel. I went to Wursthall recently and was pleasantly surprised at how much they improved since the last time I visited during the first few months of their opening. They have a bunch of really great food options now, like sauerkraut quesadillas, all types of sausages and a really great salty pretzel. Oh, and you can also get sides with your meals like fried potatoes, potato salad and chips. All the hazy IPAs I tried were good. The service was great. You order using a QR code on the table and the food quickly gets served to you. The really great thing is that if you come in a large party, you can pay for your order separately through the QR code. The spot was pretty large. There were a bunch of tables and seating available. You can help yourself to water at the bar or order through the QR code. It seems like a popular place to go for happy hour for those that work in the downtown San Mateo area. read more
This spot is located conveniently next to the Caltrain station in San Mateo. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and it was not very busy. They have a good amount of TVs to watch your favorite sports games, and the waiters are very nice and open to changing channels to a ball game you'd like to watch. That's exactly what I did and came here specifically to watch a college football game (seems like others were there for the same reason). Decent spot to watch the games, only knock is some of the TVs are far away so will depend on where you are seated. The food was really good. More on the expensive side and portions aren't huge. But the food is tasty. I got me a Porchetta Dog. Had a little tartness that balanced the flavors well. Potato salad is bomb. Not your typical style but again very balanced flavors. Got a pumpkin brew to go along that was the cherry on top. There are lots of interesting menu options for the dogs/wursts. Will be back to try some more! read more
