One of my friends is a server at Wursthall, and she said it's closing! I had to try it and wanted to be there for her last shift before they permanently closed. Ordered two sausages, two burgers, one salad, and one of each side. Also tried the chicken schnitzel. My only regret is not coming here sooner! Came here this weekend to celebrate Oktoberfest! I wanted to get some German beer and Wursthall was the closest location to us at the time. Although this was not my favorite German restaurant in the Bay Area, it was convenient in San Mateo. Sad they would be permanently closed down this week! My family and I decided to come here one last time instead of going to my favorite German restaurants in SF or in RWC so we could enjoy one last beer, wurst sausage, and pretzel from Wursthall. The place was packed! We came here a few times and this was the most business we had seen here! The workers were kind and offered two high chairs for us. Instead, we asked to sit in the kid's table so our toddlers could draw and sit in those cute, tiny chairs, while the adults enjoyed the one liter beer in the boot! We ordered the pretzel with pepper and honey! It was tasty! We also got the Porchetta wurst so the kids could eat it. It was good but I preferred the curry one. The place was super lively this past Saturday! Guess everyone wanted to enjoy German beer/food for Oktoberfest too or because they knew Wursthall was closing! During COVID, I remember watching Kenji's videos filmed in the Wursthall kitchen, so walking in for the first time a few years ago was like a dream. Kenji Lopez-Alt and features bold, flavorful, globally-inspired dishes. My favorite item was the Impossible Turkish-ish Sausage, a housemade vegan sausage spiced with cumin, Urfa Biber chile, and sumac, served in a toasted bun and topped with arugula, sumac onions, pickled chilies, and vegan mayo. The spices added a delicious flavor to the vegan sausage (which was convincingly meaty), and the toppings added a contrasting freshness. Another creative, non-traditional sausage was the Al Pastor Wurst, a pork sausage spiced with cumin, oregano, and chilies, and topped with roasted pineapple and chile aioli. Great spot for a big group! We had around 15 people and they were able to accommodate all of us in a large long table. I really like how we order and pay on our phones so it makes eating out as a group so much more doable and less of a headache with the bill. The vibe is very post work happy hour vibes. A few weeks ago, while my parents were in town, we were meeting up with a another family we are friends with and looking for an option that would accommodate a larger group (8 people total). I had known of Wursthall for a long time - I remember following Kenji Lopez Alt's food videos during lockdown and him working in the kitchen there. With that in mind, I decided to finally rip the bandaid off and check out this place. Our group went to Wursthall on a Tuesday night around 6:30 PM - street parking was relatively easy to find in downtown San Mateo and we were able to find a table to accommodate us easily. For our meal everyone placed orders of various sausages and other items (chicken schnitzel, potato salad, chicken bites, etc.) and we ordered a few beers. We did everything family style and shared things as they arrived. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed everything we had. If I could, I'd go through and have every single item on that menu. Service throughout the evening was also prompt and friendly. Highlight food items for me were the currywurst and the Schnitzel. We had an awesome experience and I'd definitely like to go again .... which is bittersweet seeing as the restaurant is closing at the end of the month. Went to this place at 4:30 on a Thursday for a work event. The place is not huge and it has long tables like a German pub. The is also a first floor but it can get crowded because the space is small. When I arrived at 4:30pm, which is when the place opens, I found a spot right outside but I can see how it might be difficult to get parking during peak hours. Most of the people in my group drank beer but I tried the rose, sauvignan blanc and both were terrible, not surprising since this place is a beer hall. The mixed drinks were strong and the beer tasty (I was told). They also has a buffet for our group - pretzels, hot chicken bites, a vegetarian quesadilla filled with sauerkraut and a garbanzo salad. Went for Dinner Food - 1/5. Bratwurst was disappointing. The sausage is completely lacking in texture. The meat was way too loose, creating weird air pockets that creates a poor mouthfeel. This is especially bad for a forcemeat like sausage, which is meant to be stuffed to mimic the feel of a whole muscle cut of meat. The looseness did not allow the casing to expand fully, resulting in a gummy, chewy texture. Flavor of the sausage was milder than expected, which did not pair well with the sharpness of the toppings. Both the sauerkraut and the mustard had a strong piquant flavor, way overpowering both the sausage and the bun. It would have been better if the sauerkraut and mustard were placed on the side, rather than placed on top. Fried potatoes were delicious with a perfectly crunchy crust paired with a soft center. Service - 4/5. Ordering and paying is done by QR code so the interaction with servers are minimal. Food came out in good time and service was swift. Value - 1/5. The wursts are $16 each and comes with a choice of side. That is not a terrible price for the area, but given that the wurst was terrible, the money spent felt completely wasted. This place was unique in one way their food selection blew my mind with the amount of creativity they had in there plenty of options, and their sizes are pretty huge. They have a great selection of beer too, but a pro tip. If you sit on a table you can only order and until you order nobody's gonna come check on you to see what you like or make some recommendations. You should go to the bar area and do some tasting before you order on your phone , there's a street parking available on the road so plan your trip accordingly. It's very casual German beer bar. Friday night we just needed some good beers and indulgent food to pair with - you can get both here. It's a clean and spacious interior. It's also one of those QR code menu and online ordering platforms. Order/Pay and the food will come. No problem here, if you can use your phone, you'll know how to order. This spot is located conveniently next to the Caltrain station in San Mateo. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and it was not very busy. They have a good amount of TVs to watch your favorite sports games, and the waiters are very nice and open to changing channels to a ball game you'd like to watch. Decent spot to watch the games, only knock is some of the TVs are far away so will depend on where you are seated. The food was really good. More on the expensive side and portions aren't huge. But the food is tasty. I got me a Porchetta Dog. Had a little tartness that balanced the flavors well. Potato salad is bomb. Not your typical style but again very balanced flavors.
