The food here was really good! We came on Father's Day and it wasn't crowded. I got the trout and it was super moist and crunchy on the outside. They also give you bread with garlic butter. We were ready to try a new place and happened to walk by this place. A very pleasant young man greeted us and seated us outdoor. Riza made our dining experience very pleasant. We started off with their Bavarian Pretzel which was freshly made, lightly salted, and served with a honey Dijon mustard that I could not get enough of and Spundekäs (pronounced shpoon-deh-kess) which is a creamy, spiced cream cheese spread. We also tried the Meatball Appetizer (Konigsberger Klopse) which was thiese meatballs in a creamy caper sauce. Our expectation was building up for sure. We decided to order three entrees to share. We loved the Grilled Angus Ribeye served with this rich homemade Spaetzle pasta. The Chicken Breast Jäger Schnitzel is served with Pan-Fried Potato Hash and mushrooms with herbs demi glaze sauce. We were here yesterday , August 8, a little after 5. The restaurant was big, with comfortable seats and attractive decor. After being seated by a female staff member, our server "Willy C" brought us complimentary bread and took our orders . The bread was delicious. When we requested more, he said "every table gets 2 pieces" (meaning each table cannot be served more than 2 pieces). He did eventually bring us an additional serving after we gave him an incredulous look. The potato pancakes were the best we have had. The Jager schnitzel was perfectly pan fried and well-seasoned (as was the potato pancakes), accompanied by a flavorful mushroom sauce. The pork shank, though came with very good red cabbage side, would have been much better if slow cooked longer for a more tender texture. The dessert was the big disappointment among the foods. Instead of being apple strudel with "nuts and raisins" as we had ordered, it was a measly buttery turnover with apple (mostly jelly) and cheese filling. All in all, this restaurant serves good, high quality food. The most unpleasant experience of the evening was our server. His bad attitude and passive aggressiveness dampened our evening. Frankly, I am surprised he is given the role of working with customers. We will definitely think twice if he were the only server on the floor on our next visit. We met up on a Sunday afternoon here, since none of us have ever had German food before. Parking was a little busy since Sunday is San Carlos' farmers market day, but it was easy to get seated right at opening at 11 am. We opted to sit in their outdoor dining space, since it was a nice day but the overhead was covered, providing the perfect environment. It was our waitress' first day at the restaurant, but she did a great job attending to us! Most of us ordered schnitzels (I ordered a Chicken Breast Schnitzel) and a variety of beers. We also ordered the German Molten Cake and Apple Streusel to share for dessert. The schnitzels are Huge!! I only ate half of mine, saving the rest of it for a future meal. You can tell it was freshly breaded and cooked, and it went really well with the cream sauce. My friends all really enjoyed their schnitzels. The desserts were absolutely divine. Being from Vienna, Austria, it was absolutely unbelievable to us what was served to us as schnitzel. I have never seen schnitzel looking like this anywhere in Austria or Germany. I recommend the cook to just look up how schnitzel should look like and learn how to make it. Breading texture was off as you can see in the photo: Classic schnitzel (especially Wiener schnitzel) should have: * An even, golden-brown color * A puffy, airy, slightly bubbly crust Ours looked: * Patchy * Flat * Dark in spots and pale in others That usually means: * Oil wasn't hot enough * Not enough oil (schnitzel needs to "swim" a bit) * Breading wasn't properly fluffed (crumbs pressed too hard) I can't believe we paid for the worst schnitzel we've ever had a higher price than the best schnitzels we have eaten in best restaurants in Austria or Germany. read more

Our second visit to Bistro Mitte was an awful disappointment. I am of German heritage, traveled through out Germany a few times. And many, many Oktoberfests. I make my own Schnitzel, Spatzle, Sauerbraten. We had an out of town guest. She picked German food. And since we were leaving the next day, of course we thought this was an excellent choice. I ordered the Pork Tenderloin Wiener Schnitzel with Pan Fried Hash. I get..... SPAM. SPAM!!! And not even any Schnitzel crust. With mashed potatoes!?! I brought the plate back to waitress and said I was served the wrong meal. She claimed they changed the menu?! To SPAM?! Also since I am lactose intolerant I cannot eat mashed potatoes. I brought my disgusting meal back to our table and said well... this is inedible. I cut into the SPAM. Real Meat is supposed to be flaky. This SPAM had....bubbles. It was so disgusting I almost.... My husband tried a bite and said no way. I told the waitress I can't eat any of this. So they brought me some Pan Fried Hash. The rest of the party shared their meal with me, while I stared at SPAM. Like my coworker said, the word "Bistro" for a German restaurant might mean it's like a cafe and to lower our food expectations. Came here for lunch and it was empty which is never a good sign. First off the service was great, no complaints there. The food however was very bland. The sausage I got tasted like underseasoned pork. That's it. The mashed potatoes tasted like they're from a TV dinner and so did the cabbage and sauerkraut. Just complete underwhelming. I'd rather have some name brand chicken apple sausage from a packet in the grocery store. My coworker's pasta was greasy and lukewarm, but I think the saddest dish was their strudel. Nothing like a cold apple strudel with like a couple of raisins and barely any flavor for like $10. More than underwhelming, just plain sad. I have to address the service, or better the lack of it. -I was completely ignored at the front door by the two staff members who just kept walking past me. -When approaching the bar to place my to-go order, the woman working behind the counter didn't immediately approach me when she saw me and instead straightened things. -There was no warm greeting when she finally came over. - Since the menu lists the German name of the dish I placed an order for the Schweinshaxe only to be corrected by her with a "You mean pork shank." ugh - No indication was giving how indication how long my to-go order would take. -I wasn't offered any beverage or water while I waited even though it was a hot day and it was rather warm inside the restaurant. There was ZERO German hospitality, which was very disappointing Food: -Bavarian Pretzel (4/5): the pretzel itself was pretty good. Some salt and Lauge, and was nice and soft. I also really enjoyed the mustard they provided. I'm not sure what the yellow dip was, but it looked and tasted like runny mayo rather than cheese. A hard pass! -Schweinshaxe (3.5/5): This was the main reason why I came here. A traditional haxe is rather large and has a ton of crispy skin (my favorite part) encasing juicy pork meat. To my disappointment, they don't give you the full shank (the portion was small) and it was pretty much skin-free. There was a small piece of skin on the side which was very soggy, indicating that they don't just bake it as indicated on the menu, but likely braised (either fully or to finish it). The flavor was nice, but not at all what I was looking for. The accompanying mashed potatoes and red cabbage were good but in dire need of salt and pepper. -Honey cake (4.7/5): The cake itself was amazing: I'm not sure why they chose to cover the cake in raspberry sauce which overpowers the flavor of the cake. So when you place your order, ask them to skip the decor ;) I originally was impressed with the lower prices of the apps and main dishes compared to other German restaurants in the Bay Area. But after seeing how small and not authentic the Haxe was, I would rather get it from the other establishments. My first time here and this restaurant makes a good first impression. First of all the service is attentive and the bread is great, but it is the herbaceous, garlic compound butter that was the standout item for the whole meal. I mentioned this and my waiter made certain to add an extra portion of the butter in my to go bag. Expect to take home leftovers because portions are large. I haven't had schnitzel since I was in Germany in 1984, but on this cold Sunday night, it sounded good. I opted for Jǎger Schnitzel with mushrooms and pork tenderloin. We shared two entrees, the bratwurst and the portobello mushroom jager schnitzel. The bratwurst came with two plump sausage links, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, red cabbage and German mustard. We also added the currywurst sauce. The portobello mushroom arrived with two deep fried mushrooms, Jager sauce, mashed potatoes and vegetables. Everything was incredibly delicious! The bratwurst were not dry at all! The sausage paired really well with the sauerkraut and both sauces. The red cabbage was perfectly seasoned and not too sweet. The portobello mushrooms had a great crunch and it wasn't greasy at all. The Jager sauce was really savory and tasty. I really enjoyed the vegetables that was served with the mushrooms. We stopped here for lunch today because it was convenient and we've been wanting to try this restaurant now for a while. We asked the waiter if it was possible to get service in time to be out an hour later for a kid's soccer game and he assured us we would be. He was right. The service was terrific. Our waiter was funny, personable, and very attentive. Because it was lunch, I did not choose one of the heavier dishes that I thought I would enjoy like rouladen, but instead picked the Thuringer bratwurst, which was accompanied by red cabbage, as well as white and potatoes. The dish was excellent, although given that Ditmer sausages always are excellent, I'm not surprised. What convinced me of the authenticity and quality of the cooking was the potato salad. If you don't find dill pickle and a very clear vinaigrette on a potato salad, it is not German. This most definitely was, and we loved it. The pork weiner schnitzel was also excellent as was the frankfurter sausage, although the thuringer had more flavor. The beer (Dunkle) we had was the perfect drink with the food. Went here after an afternoon of walking around Fioli Gardens so we were pretty hungry! Had reservations for 8 and got seated pretty quickly. The service was friendly and pretty fast. We got the Spaetzle and Bavarian pretzel (2) as appetizers! OMG they were amazing! The pretzel came with a cheese sauce and a honey dijon mustard. I would suggest - eating it with the cheese sauce first so you can get the flavor because once you dip in the honey dijon - you want that full on flavor! The pretzel was pretty spot on - we had gone to Germany and tried all kinds and this one was pretty good. The spaetzle was a little different than what I was used to? It was thin and long - like chopped up spaghetti noodles - where the ones I'm used to are more curled? BUT regardless the flavors were so good and texture was perfect. That caramelized onion in the sauce really makes the flavors POP!! Could have gotten another order but luckily we didn't. Most of us got either the schnitzels (Jager) or the German Beef Rouladen. Nephew just got the hamburger but he seemed to really enjoy it! :) First off the schnitzels were so tender and juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside - and the Jager sauce (Mushroom) - honestly you can't go wrong. My dad LOVED the potatoes - the way they cut it had flavor all around. Needed a bit of salt but I love that they let you decide how salty you want it. The salad was "eh" with very little dressing but it provided me less guilt cause I did eat my veggies! :) We actually tried the pork and the veal. Veal was delicious - a bit thin but the pork was AMAZING. Very juicy and next time I'm going for the pork... Hubby and middle got the German Beef Rouladen - it's beef that has been pounded and rolled with their mustard, bacon, onions and pickles and came with a wine gravy/sauce on top of mashed potatoes - they also got veggies and pickled cabbage. The servers are a delight--like an Oktoberfest hug in human form. I've been keen to try Bistro Mitte since it opened. I've always been jealous that downtown Mountain View has Ludwig's. I finally got a chance to try it today and I was very disappointed. Service started okay, but a little slow. Where things went off the rails was the food. First I received a different beer to the one I ordered and told they didn't have the one on the menu. The schnitzel was just ok. The main issue was the jager sauce did not taste at all like jager sauce and tasted strongly of vinegar. The side veggies were all overcooked. The bratwurst plate we ordered came out room temperature. When we flagged it, they reheated (and charred) the bratwurst, but left the overcooked sides unheated and room temperature. It arrived back after we were done with the other food. We weren't checked on again. We had to go inside to pay as our waitress just simply never returned. Really subpar experience all around, and won't be back. Two stars only because my kids liked the fries and pretzels. read more

This is a new German restaurant located in downtown San Carlos. I thought the experience was neat since I don't see a lot of German restaurants around these parts. Service was nice and prompt except for the beer my friend ordered at the beginning didn't show up until we had to ask for it again. They have bread on the side which I thought was tasty. However, a lot of German food is very carb heavy so I'm not really sure if you need extra bread... We started with the Bavarian pretzel and it was solid. But it was of course carbs so it's definitely a snack / appetizer. We ordered the spaetzle and it did taste like upleveled mac and cheese. It was not bad? Just a bit too heavy for me to eat this all the time. Once again another carb though heh. We got some schnitzel and the pieces of meat they give you are quite large. I had to take some home. I tried mine with the capers sauce and felt that to be a hint too sour for me to eat this all the time. I did like the Jaeger schnitzel sauce better since it was more of a white creamy sauce so I'd consider getting that next time. The meat was very thin and breaded nicely, not super oily. A newish restaurant in San Carlos that offers a different cuisine on Laurel - some delicious, authentic German food. We came here for a weekday lunch during the holiday break, and there was plenty of seating, both inside and outdoors. They have a kid's menu, which I wasn't aware of, which made things even better. I was able to order a cheese spaetzle and chicken schnitzel with fries for the little ones, while my husband got the paprika schnitzel and I got the jager schnitzel. Pork is the default protein although you can also choose to upgrade to chicken or veal. Be warned - the schnitzel serving size is big! My husband and I should have just shared. He wasn't really a fan of his paprika sauce - it was very similar to a red salsa and didn't pair as well with his schnitzel. I, on the other hand, loved the jager sauce - it's a creamy, mushroom gravy and is so savory and delicious. I only wish there was more of it that came on the plate. Both meals came with a fresh, side salad. The schnitzel itself is nicely pounded so it's a thin meat with a light coating of breadcrumbs and fried so it's nice and crispy, but not greasy. I was really impressed with the options on the menu because they offer schnitzel and pretzels and sauerkraut like you'd expect but they also have salads and fish, so you can get a classy dinner or some really nice comfort food depending on your mood. Every aspect of the meal was good. They offer great German beers on tap and the server gave me a good recommendation. I knew I had to write a review when they brought out lightly toasted bread with herbed butter right after we sat down (delicious!). I had salmon as my main dish. It was seasoned and cooked perfectly and the potatoes and vegetables that came with it were good accompaniments. We also tried the sauerkraut, but I'm no expert on that. The food is delicious. It's also the most authentic German food I've had since we lived in Freiburg. And they were so nice!

Extremely disappointing experience. I went to this German bistro in Mitte and honestly, it was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. its eve hard to say German The food was shockingly bad bland, poorly prepared, and totally lacking quality. On top of that, the place had a strange, musty smell that made it hard to enjoy anything. The overall vibe was depressing and uncomfortable. I lost my appetite completely and just wanted to leave. Finally a German place right on Laurel! Took my German coworker and he agreed the look and taste is fairly traditional, in case anybody was wondering =) While we wanted to order one of everything, for our first time we got the rouladen and pork schnitzel, both were delicious and totally hit the spot! Rouladen I can't even explain... kinda like a flat beef piece stuffed with mustard onions bacon and pickles, and rolled and baked. Super good but if you dont like pickles skip it (or try to ask for without?) Because that's what makes this so extra good. Between the beef mustard bacon and pickles kinda sounds like a rolled burger but that wouldn't be doing it justice! I am honestly considering right now if I want to let my husband try my leftovers, or if I should hide them and let Future Megan enjoy a secret lil treat. I'm not normally like that with food I'm more of a sharer, so the fact I'm even mentally having this battle is a testament to how yummy it was. The pork schnitzel was also exactly what I had pictured - HUGE flat and breaded pork piece, great flavor in every layer, and wasnt dry at all even before the glorious gravy was added!! Can choose type of potatoes and it comes with salad too. The food was so satisfying I wasn't even looking around at other peoples plates because the one in my face had my undivided attention! And I always have a wandering food eye ;) Came for lunch but don't think I didn't spy the beer wall at the back! Will def return for more food and beer =) Incredibly pleased to have a German place in San Carlos, can't wait to try the other dishes. Esp my precious spaetzle! read more

The beer and vegan pasta is really good here. If you're feeling miserable the food here will brighten your day. This is definitely comfort food. The Bavarian pretzels here are really good too, mmm that cheese and honey Dijon. read more
