Newish restaurant and we like German food so thought we should check it out. It took a while to get served and there weren't many people there, servers were chatting in the back. Once they came to our table, it was fine. Schnitzel was good, jaeger Schnitzel was not quite as good, just has a tiny little container of the mushroom sauce, not many mushrooms. The red cabbage salad was very good. The schnitzel was very plain without any kind of applesauce or berry sauce so the cabbage salad side is a must to go either it. Good selection of beers. The decor was nice, didn't change a lot from the previous restaurant, but that's ok! It's a good place. read more

Fun new place. All the food was delicious. Go hungry, as the portions are big. Service was good and the place has a funky but warm European ambiance to it. A good place to go when you're in the mood for some comfort food. read more

Visited last night for a little date and oh my gosh! The staff were so friendly and professional. Service was exceptional. We ordered a couple Bavarian pretzels, Käsespätzle for appetizer, Jägerschnitzel and German Beef Rouladen for entrees, and Lavakuchen for dessert. For being a fairly new restaurant, my husband and I were so impressed. We met the owner and we could tell his heart is in his restaurant. Highly recommend. read more

I made a reservation on January 20th on open table for my father-in-laws 80th birthday. A table for 5 for Saturday, March 15th at 5pm. Nearly two months in advance. Then they tried to seat an elderly man outside in the cold because apparently, at some point, they booked a party that consumed the entire inside of the restaurant. You messed up. You should have called to tell me that you wouldn't be able to honor my reservation. Instead, I received the confirmation request the day before and confirmed. You ruined the man's birthday. His kids were just trying to get him some dang German food (his favorite) for a big birthday. Fix your system and don't lie to your guests that you told them it would be outdoor seating. You absolutely did not. read more

Tried this place last night and it was great! If I could spell schnitzel, I would highly recommend it! Tried both and loved them. 4 of us sat at the bar and had excellent service by Julian. Inside is very warm with a couple of TVs behind the bar. Warriors lost but everything else was a win. read more

This is a great German restaurant with classic German food. I had a great Jäger Schnitzel. Their menu has classics including sausage, schnitzel, Rouladen, and beef liver. They have a great selection of German beers on tap and in bottles. The kids liked the frankfurter hot dog and pretzel. Definitely coming back to try the other dishes. read more

Went here today with an old friend. He had been here a few times in the past and wanted me to try it. We both had a schnitzel, mine Wiener and his had a pepper sauce. He also had the spaetzel and devoured it. The meat came out perfectly cooked. The portions are a good size. The salad is lightly dressed, so no need to have it on the side. We have visited this restaurant twice and will return again. The schnitzel is the star of the show. My husband ordered the chicken breast Jaeger Schnitzel both times and thoroughly enjoyed it. The schnitzels are HUGE. My father ordered the veal Parmi Schnitzel, which had a thin layer of melty cheese over top. Good comfort food vibes. I tried the beef skewer appetizer (Schaschlik?) which came with a small salad. The tenderloin was cooked nicely and the salad was well-dressed. I tried to order the DoppelBock beer both times, and they were out. They were also out of the Pilsner on our second visit. I drank a Belgian Tripel instead but really wanted a German beer. My dad and husband tried some kind of wheat beer which was adequate. They do also serve wine, but we didn't really peruse the selections. We tried the Honey Cake for dessert and it was delicious. Our server highly recommended the apple strudel, so we will try that next time. The restaurant always seems understaffed when we visit. The servers are kind, but it was hard for us to request the check at the end of the meal. Bistro Mitte has indoor and outdoor seating, which is convenient for dog owners. Big windows in the restaurant provide a nice view of the many passers-by. A truly nice place for lunch or dinner but service can be spotty. read more

Had a wonderful meal at Bisto Mitte. I'm such a fan of veal schnitzel as it was a staple food while growing up so it brings back great memories. Chef was working in Germany for many years and the owner, awesome, friendly guy, encouraged him to come and open up this new place. All of our meals were wonderful: pretzel, schnitzel and rumpsteak. Top it off with the must-have lava cake dessert - soooo good. So glad to have Mitte in San Carlos. read more

Turns out they have one of the best burgers in the area and you can order it medium or medium rare. The pork knuckle is my go to favorite but switch it up with the Schnitzel from time to time I haven't been to a German place this good since Schroeder's in SF The service is also spot on read more

What a dynamite addition to downtown SC! Loved everything about this place, reminds me of our trip to Munich and some of the little German places that used to be in SF years aback. This has the vibe of a cozy upscale gastropub plus a dark sophisticated restaurant plus a rustic lodge plus a sports bar plus n art gallery ... you name it and want it, that's what it'll magically be. Their bar is insanely beautiful with a cross sectional slab of polished tree bark, so gorgeous. Their walls full of vibrant artwork, and chandeliers with exposed bulbs that are forgiving and not harsh. Beautiful ambience, this is what all restaurants should aspire to. Their bratwurst has a mild rich nutty flavor that any eater will love plus their red cabbage has the requisite sweetness, and their sauerkraut the tangy bordering on sour but with complexity. Their salad with a dill yogurt dressing and mixed vegetables of grilled green and yellow zucchini and yellow and red bell peppers, char marks exterior with shaved Bermuda onion--OMG the freshness off the chain, every bite heavenly, looked that plate. Stunning flavors and an ode to what nature gets right. Their potato salad is not ordinary. It's a revelation of textures with pickles and potatoes with egg boiled and Bermuda and more chives. The pretzel with soft cheese and sweet honey mustard sauce is absolute bomb. Their complementary bread with an herbaceous butter, perfectly spreadable and loads of flavor. By the time we ate our starters, we were already stuffed and couldn't do justice to the main. But we couldn't resist their carry chocolate Chantilly cream cake. That thing slaps. The perfect combination of fresh cream and deep rich chocolate with a kick of cherry layered and nestled in between. The customer service is sweet and attentive, super solicitous , just fantastic and the prices are more than reasonable. For the freshness and quality of ingredients, so great. Outstanding. The chicken schnitzel, basically a breaded cutlet, is just about better than any breaded chicken cutlet I haver had. Tender, thin, crispy and flavorful. The salads were fresh and tasty and the home made bread is yummy. Don't understand why this place is more crowded. This was a nice fairly reasonable place for an underrepresented cuisine. They have a number of interesting starters. Be sure and get the German Spring Rolls - excellent. Stuffed with ham and swiss and dipped in paprika mayonnaise. They have an impressive list of house made sausages and schnitzels, either chicken, pork, portabello or veal. They all have potatoes. Also have a couple fish. The trout was perfectly done and came with a salad and potatoes. Nice selection of wines and they also have cocktails. Will likely be back to try other dishes. Nice outside area, otherwise, might be too loud inside. There is parking nearby. read more

I had an unusual experience at this restaurant this evening. I'm a fan of German food. I'm German myself. I am always enthusiastic to check out new places with German food. I heard from friends that there was a fairly newish German restaurant in San Carlos. I looked it up on there web page previous to heading over there. Webpage didn't have a menu or any information about the restaurant who the people running it are or any of that.. so I headed over in curiosity. When I got there, the restaurant was about a third full and nobody was at the bar. It was raining outside and rather than looking at the menu outside. I thought it might be nice to go inside and sit at the bar and view the menu I asked to sit at the bar and asked to see a menu.. I was promptly asked what I wanted to eat and drink. I said I'm new to the place and I'm not sure if I'm gonna get food. Can I possibly just get a drink and look over the menu for next time? I was then asked within 5 minutes or less two more times by two different people working there if I wanted any food.. I said no can I please just look over the menu and can I please get one of your bottled beers? I ordered a German bottle beer and they promptly told me that they were out of it. They no longer had it and they were out of it. I forgot to mention at one point in this really strange interaction with the server. I asked if the owner was German. I was curious about the restaurant and just why they are passionate about it.The reply was no the chef is German not the owner.. I said oh that's wonderful. I asked if it would be possible to meet the chef and the server replied that the chef is not working tonight. A little strange considering that it's a Friday night and that should probably be a busy time for this restaurant I would think.. honestly I can't see if this restaurant food is good or bad because I pretty much walked out after they told me that they didn't have the beer that they have on the menu and they repeatedly kept asking me if I wanted to order food when I said, I just wanted to review the menu. I hope this makes sense and I hope that the owner of this business shares more about who they are and what their passion about this restaurant.. clearly the folks working there we're not able to explain that to me. I forgot to add that I've been to many great Italian restaurants and the owners haven't been Italian. For a small restaurant it's strange not to have the owner present and not to have a feel of what this place is really about.. read more

I have eaten it here 3 times. I normally don't like Germany foods with various sausages, but this place offers a variety of foods (I lived in Germany/Switzerland for half a year). Here I have eaten meatballs, schnitzels, mashed potato, deserts, all very good. Services are attentive and friendly. The only thing I don't like is the loud music and their musical choice. I'll be upfront and say I'm not a German food connoisseur. That being said, the food was great. I had the Weisswurst. It was flavorful without being salty. Texture was great as the sausage was not rubbery. Sauerkraut, red cabbage, and mash potatoes all very good. Never had warm sauerkraut. I liked it. Service was very attentive without being obtrusive.
