Ordered the lobster boil with mussels and shrimp special. It took almost an hour to prepare. When we pointed this out to the waitress she insisted it would be out soon. After ten more minutes I noticed the couple next to us that was seated after we where .. already on their after dinner drinks. When i asked what was taking so long she said they were really busy. I pointed at the table next to us and the waitress suggested it was because we ordered appetizer (two grilled oysters and a clam chowder) and they didn't. I don't even know where to start with this review. Decor? Selection? Atmosphere? This place is of the chain good. Not on your normal beaten path that is known as the plaza, but your feet will take a detour for this place. I decided to try out Salt Fish with my wife. Walk inside, boom, service. Nice tables, killer paint on the walls and a real modern sea vibe. Now, here's what's weird. I don't like much fish ( then why was I at a place that serves mostly fish,?!?!) Either way, ordered a glass of great wine, and had some charred oysters for an app (killer, no real hard sea taste!) My Wife ordered a dish that has sole on it and mushrooms (forgot the name) and I ordered the surf and turf. When this food got to our table, I knew..... The plating looked like it came off of TV, some high high end place out of NYC. One bite (sturgeon BTW for surf!) And I knew, this is my new spot for dinner. That one place that covers all occasions. Dinner with in laws, anniversary's, birthdays, out maybe just make up an excuse to go kinda thing! Dessert was on point. It was a brownie bread pudding. We are never disappointed after eating at Salt. We usually prefer to sit at the bar so we can chat with the lovey staff. The food, cocktails, and service are all phenomenal. In particular the octopus appetizer and the mussels stood out. Also, there's always a SELECTION of oysters!!! The king crab legs, mussels and fish tacos were all awesome (and larger than we were expecting), and the drinks were funky, different and delicious too! 2 foodie farmers find Salt to be fabulous. On our annual getaway to the coast from our hot inland farm we picked up Salt on our yelpdar screen. We had to try it from perusing the menu. The white walls and lite colored tables keep the atmosphere light in what could be a dark space. And to Salts credit the sound reducing measures work well in what could be a way to noisy space. The place filled up with not an empty table by 7pm on a teusday, and for a good reason. The food is good to excellent, the service quick and attentive, and we found the prices to be really reasonable. Our starting course was some raw and grilled oysters. Fresh and fantastic, the raw  with mingnonette were sweet and briney and the grilled with chimichuri were a nice treat, but the standout was the charred citrus oyster. It was like a super fresh and lite oyster stew in one slurp. Should have knocked down a few more of those. The ceaser salad let us down a bit though. It wasn't kale in it that disappointed us it was the lack of Zipp, garlic, or anchovy in the dressing. Ceasars in a seafood restart should have some anchovy in the dressing and better yet some pieces of anchovies. Seems constructed to be safe not great. Next came the charred octopus with sundried tomato and arugula and it was divine, cooked perfectly and a texture and flavor treat for our mouths. I'm a sucker for octopus and this dish reaffirmed that. We followed with 1/2 # of King crab served with butter and coctail sauce,yes king crab isn't fresh nor freshly frozen this time of year but it's been ages since I've had any so I took a chance. The legs were a bit worse for the wear but not beyond what i expected, but the body was juicy and soo sweet. ( I'm gonna make sure this winter to find some fresh and gorge on it if I have to go all the way to Alaska) Then as the wife was getting full I had to limit the next dish to something lighter I choose a Hamachi and grapefruit crudo that was delicious. Light, refreshing and a fun mix of textures. I wished it was a little more adventurous though. I took a different route for dessert than many, I choose to try the mac n cheese over a traditional dessert, as we had some nice cookies waiting for us on the counter of our beach shack. The MnC, was delighful, a more refined rue than a heavy overpowering flavor. On whole we enjoyed our whole experience from the setting and service all the way to the food. The prices are very reasonable, as your not paying big $$ for a view of the ocean for so-so seafood. Next year we will definitely come back to try some of the other delicious looking dishes. read more

Wow. bay area prices on the cocktails.. but they are good! the bartenders are really welcoming and friendly even when it was slammed on a friday night. Had the oysters with a girlfriend and fries were excellent. She got the fish special and loved it, i kept it simple with cocktails and apps. Extra star because it Humboldt. Minimalist modern interior and a pleasant wait staff. Gibson is a really good bartender so eating at the bar is always a nice option. The menu is well thought out and balanced with light to hearty dishes. The last time in the table ordered the shrimp cocktail, burrata, and the smoked fish mousse to start and the clams with pasta, mushroom risotto and fish tacos for mains. Everyone at the table was happy with all the dishes. But the clams, and the risotto with the prawn addition were the stand outs. We passed on desert as we were to full. read more

It's pricey but the food is amazing. My boyfriend got the clams and the fish tacos and loved them both. The tacos had a little kick, and he fell in love with the clams. He wished he had them for the whole meal. I had the cod n chips and the halibut ceviche and they were both amazing. This was my first time eating there. We went for my birthday. The food was excellent! I had a drink, which was supurb. The price was moderate. The restaurant was rather noisy, and it was half full. With a full house, it would be very loud. While restaurants are not "required" to do anything extra for a persons birthday, I've noticed most offer a simple free dessert. When the waitress was informed it was my birthday, she just wished me a happy birthday, no extras. So, next birthday I'll go to a different restaurant where birthdays are celebrated with a free ice cream dessert. I'll save the return visit for another occasion. read more

The food was delicious! We started with the fried calamari and stuffed olives. I ordered their fish tacos with the spicy slaw and watermelon radish (yum) and my boyfriend had the risotto with scallops, which were both really good meals! My only complaint is that it took a long time to get our drinks, a beer and a cocktail (which was great!) but the restaurant wasn't that busy so I'm not sure why it took so long. No shrimp or squid even though that was listed as part of the menu. I don't think they used any saffron which is critical to a great paella. I had a wonderful dinner at the new seafood spot in town...Salt Fish House. For starters my vegetarian date and I shared a mixed greens salad and the Burrata Cheese App. The salad was big enough to share and could have used some shaved white onion to spruce it up, but both dishes were well seasoned and we ate every bite. I had 3 grilled oysters and 3 raw...delicious and fresh! For dinner I had their version of the "surf and turf" which was grilled sturgeon and Asian pork belly. Both meats were cooked to perfection and the sizing was just right. My date is a vegetarian and insisted he wanted to try all the sides before making his decision to come back and actually try one of their vegetarian main meals (they offer two vegetarian friendly dinner options). The sides are big enough to share for 2 people. My only complaint was the seasonal greens which in my opinion were a bit on the mushy bitter side, but my date said he felt they were "passable". We ate every bite of our dinner and had Panna Cotta with sesame brittle and grapefruit for dessert. The ambience was fresh, bright and welcoming. The staff friendly. The drinks were refreshing and delicious. And all the food that came out of the kitchen looked amazing. And surprisingly enough, for a seafood restaurant, it didn't have the invasive smell of fish! So salt fish is a fun place to try raw oysters for a first time. We went for a lunch time meal. Our family shared fish tacos, raw oysters (first time adventure) and clam chowder. The restaurant is located in an area of arcata that frankly just smells terrrible. The restaurant is a new establishment, only two years old. We were surprised by their desire for excellence, and detail to service, both were good, but simple things like not getting water refills were missed. I would definitely eat here again, if I'm in Arcata. But arcata itself is Not exactly a go to place. This restaurant will have to really become a place on the map and change the way people see Arcata. read more

They are very hit and miss with their food. Think it depends on the chef who is cooking. First time I got the fish sandwich it had a great breading and was nice and moist, with a good portion of fish. The second time I was really looking forward to it, but was disappointed when I got it. The fish was dry and less than half of the actual sandwich had any fish on it. I showed the waitress, and she was apologized. Also got the steamed mussels with fries, which was so good that we cleaned the plate. The fries stayed crispy despite soaking in the yummy lemony garlicky white wine mussel juice. Could've had a glass of the juice alone. Great service, nice atmosphere, and truly wonderful experience! Way too much of a chipotle style sauce on it, and the chicken was pretty greasy. She had the grilled fish tacos and a side of cod fritters and liked them both. The food here is excellent. The space is a little noisy, but overall appealing. The issue I have is with the service. We were here about a year ago and then one of the entrees arrived at least five minutes and perhaps ten minutes after the other dinners. We haven't been back because of this. We decided to try them again on Saturday, February 8. Same thing. Because of our previous experience, I timed the difference between the first plate and the last plate. The fish taco arrived a full five minutes after the four other plates were on the table. I mentioned this to the wait staff and they offered to take it off the bill. I appreciated the gesture but when it came time to pay the bill they had us sitting and sitting before picking up our charge cards and charging out the bill. I finally had to take the charge slips to the cash register. The dinner experience, usually an hour, was over two hours -- most of the extra hour was due to the service. read more
