Great selection of wine, cheese, meats, and fish. We went shopping for a salmon dinner and got all of our spices, proteins, and sides. The place is well laid out, and the staff are friendly. The layout makes sense. This may sound odd, but I do love being able to smell produce. It was local, organic, and fresh. Got some granola and yoghurt for breakfast, and someone needed toothpaste and a hairbrush. Done. Surprisingly wide selection. Bulk granola, nuts and whole grains. Best hot foo bar in Humboldt!! Go there for lunch from time to time last time I asked the guy who seems to be running the hot food bar for chicken noodle soup one day and then today I went in and he had made it!!! I don't what they are doing over there but the hot food today was AMAZING so much flavor! Tofu phenomenal, great taste, and tender! Collard greens fantastic! There has been multiple things that has led to this horrible review but this co-op has really bad quality control and safety control. I've purchased many items from here that are fine and many that are questionable. For a store that promotes organic and better food. Quality control and safety is not important here at this store. The pile of throw up in the picture was sat there for 20 minutes before a sign was put over the throw up it wasn't cleaned up. The workers here are SO RUDE, I've never been to a store where the workers are so judgmental and lazy. They need to hire better staff, it's like they got desperate and picked whoever they could last minute. Lots of fresh food options though. I enjoy coming to the Co-Op for the occasional bite to eat and a few groceries. There is a huge selection of items catering to various dietary restrictions/needs on the shelves and in the deli, and I've always been able to find something tasty relatively quickly. The Co-Op isn't always very budget-friendly for me because I don't have a membership and I don't buy in bulk. I feel that the Co-Op membership primarily benefits people who live in a household with a few other people. Sometimes I do find some good deals, but most of the time my purchases ring up a little on the pricey side. Prices aside, I like the Co-Op a lot. It's a one-stop shop for groceries, cleaning supplies, makeup etc. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and the store is always well-stocked. read more

I am a long time co-op member. I am increasingly disappointed. At every other grocery store I shop, cashiers at least try to help you put your food that you just purchased in the bag for you. Instead Co-op cashiers stand there and watch you as you hurry to load your groceries as they move to the next customer. The co-op benefits are next to nothing. There is really no reason to be a member. You get 5% off on the first month of the first quarter? This is ridiculous to keep track of and shows a complete lack of appreciation for the customer. Recently they are redoing the store and have been in construction for weeks, even months. I wish they would have just shutdown for 2 weeks and completed renovations. It's an awful place to shop currently. I go there only for specific items such as supplements and a few items in their bulk food section. Most everything else I can get at other grocery stores such as Murphy's market, wild berries, or Eureka natural foods. There is never enough parking. The location of the store and the sloped parking lot that is always full is another deterrent. The bakery is uninviting and is not very welcoming. I really want to like my co-op more than I do. But I am finding other co-ops such as the Ukiah coop, 110 times better than our little Co-op. I remember the days before craigslist and the Arcata Co-op had a great bulletin board that brought people from all over looking for rides, places to rent, or things to purchase. The spirit of our old co-op seems to have disappeared. I am not sure what to do to make this place better. A kick ass hot food bar would help! I think the Co-op is trying to do too much. The nursery outside the entry door is distracting and unnecessary as there are plenty of other places to buy flowers for your garden or six packs of vegetables. It would be really nice to have an outdoor seating area or that space just vacant. I'll keep being a member. But will continue to shop elsewhere for my groceries. read more

What a great location that cater's to the local organic/fresh cause! Great selection of products across many categories at decent prices that are enticing. We purchased some local honey from their bulk section. This location cater's to the type of person that brings their own bags and containers for EVERYTHING. Their bulk section is impressive for honey, oils, seasonings, molasses and more. Their beer aisle is impressive and rivals some of our larger stores in big cities! So we were in town over the weekend from The Silicon Valley and was told about North Coast from our daughter. When we went in it felt like what we have our her in Whole Foods or Sprouts. A very familiar feel as The Bay Area is going more organic and natural now days. The bakery is great. We got a Basque cake as my wife is Basque and that cake was dense and extremely flavorful. It had the consistency of a lemon bar minus the lemon and took on a pecan pie type flavor. It was really good! Aside from the hot bar, the gombucha bar, the bakery, the salad bar, the wine cellar, the great selection of food and other perishables they have the most epic IPA selections that I had ever seen. It was like a history book for my wife as she went through each IPA she has tried over the years. It was quite a sight. Coming from The Silicon Valley the prices seemed fair but then again everything out here is marked up so who knows. It was a great stop and a must while coming into town. read more

Really nice store. I stop in when I'm in the area, which isn't very often. But they always have interesting stuff. Their mushroom selection is beautiful. They even have some good bargains--last visit we got a bag of organic lemons for $1. I wish I lived closer for the bulk items. I remembered that there was a wheat-free recipe I wanted to make for a friend. I was able to buy just a cup or a half-cup of the ingredients I needed instead of buying an entire container of something I'd never need again. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. When I had a question about something, one staffer went back to the computer to Google the answer for me, then found me in the store to give me the information. The alcohol selection is pretty good and often cheaper than the supermarket. We found St. Germain and some good beers. Lucky for me, non-members can shop here, too. read more

We had a great time doing a thorough scour of this extensive store. Lots of interesting options, including a steady sprinkling of local artisan fair. We bought stuff for then (deli), stuff to ship home, and stuff for our trip. Extensive hours, 7 days a week - we actually stopped twice in our day in town! We are huge fans of local coops like this, and have seen several across the country that did a big expansion like they did, then ran into a cash crunch due to a dip in tourism, seasonal spending, or the like. Supporting stores like this is a great way to, in turn, support all the providers they purchase from, and thus support the regional food economy. Comparing the prices to a corporate run, consortium owned, GMO-featuring supermarket is fundamentally missing the point. I understand price sensitivity, especially in folks of limited means, but if you can frequent and support places like this, do so -- it means a lot! read more

I shopped a few times at the co-op when I went to Humboldt State in 1978-82. They had a great sourdough loaf of bread for a dollar. That and a can of tuna, and maybe a slice of cheese was my single meal most days. The had some snotty folks back then too. They would not carry Coors beer because of the brewer's politics, but carried San Miguel when Marcos was in power. People must be earning money with the pot head trade. Sounds pricey now. read more

Ah, the co-operative. I have been an on-and-off customer here, on the regular, for about the last 15 years. One of the more off periods was stemming from an incident, oh, I'd have to say, sometime between 2011-2013, when I walked in wearing a slightly-tattered hemp hoodie, and attempted to purchase a few cans of hard cider. The checker, probably assuming me to be a gutterpunk (at a time when that was not yet quite socially acceptable in Arcata) ID'd me, and, after presenting it without compunction, he proceeded to claim that the photo "wasn't [me]," which was the first (and to this date, only) time I had anyone try and tell me that my own driver's license was not, in fact, my own. The manager got summoned, and proceeded to chastise me for using profanity in front of his hapless checker (apparently in my advanced stage of disbelief, I said, "I can't believe this shit"), but still authorized the purchase so I could continue on my day and drink a lil' bit. I didn't go there much over the next several years, since the employees seemed somewhat cultlike in their blind devotion to the mission of what was an otherwise failing enterprise, and exhibited a leering condescension towards anyone who didn't drink the kool-aid, i.e. purchase a membership. Fortunately, they had a change in staff, and in the past few years, the checkers have been far more pleasant to deal with. [The clientele, on the other hand, typically are stoned out of their organic gourds and act particularly awkwardly while shopping: zig-zagging haphazardly throughout the store, giving you the death glare if you attempt to grab something off a shelf which they've spent the last ten minutes deeply contemplating, impeding your navigation through the narrow aisles as your fellow shoppers engage in life-affirming conversations with their carts parked perpendicular to the flow of traffic]. Which brings me to the point of finally leaving this thoughtful review: a subpar chicken sausage. Granted, it was on markdown, but typically their in-house sausages are pretty tasty. Not so tonight. I was so eager to bring home the chicken-basil sausage that I saw on sale for $2 off, I actually planned an entire grilled meal to compliment what I assumed would be a tasty center dish. Tons of great organic items. Friendly staff. A bit pricey on some things for a college budget, but if you're trying to find a specialty item, its great. Vegan options galore too! I found a huge block of tofu for about 4$, way over two pounds of it, so thats a bargain. They have a sushi bar, a bakery, a deli counter, bulk items, plants outside, produce, frozen items, refrigerated items, and a pretty decent selection of wines, ciders and beers - oh and they sell stuff for home brewing kits! I am not the person to write Yelp reviews, but my experience here yesterday needs to be noted. I went into the Co-op in Arcata to get tea tree oil so I went to the wellness department. The person working this section was blocking the aisle, and talking very closely to another customer. I asked politely if they could step aside so I could pass while maintaining the 6ft rule. The worker proceeded to get upset with me, and told me that I would have to pass her and the customer in order to get through. This could have easily been prevented if she would have stepped aside. I'm not sure if the worker was having an off day, or why this happened. I love the Co-op, but maybe talk to this worker on handling COVID precautions. Thank you. read more

All Organic produce, much of it is locally grown. I like that. However, I would like to see the produce area expand, since that's mostly how I eat. Bakery is great. Some items are brought in from other local businesses. I have found some excellent dips, cheeses, and pre-made foods here. I have yet to make full use of the BULK items in this store - grains, nuts, soaps, seeds, tea, cookies, and more. If you would like to move towards ZERO garbage from food consumption I believe that the Co-op would accommodate your needs. Once in a while check-out can be slow due to the community nature of "checking-in" with your checker here. This grocery store is heaven outside of the hefty prices thus the 4 stars. The selection is huge and has several rare items like fresh ground Tahini and homemade pumpkin ravioli. The bulk section is outstanding, a backpackers paradise. Tons of freeze dried, quick oats & nuts, etc. okay okay I'm getting there the coop had the king of brews selection, it's a place to pick out a beer you've never heard of from small obscure brewer and give it a try!! And for dessert head over to their handmade cookies....your eyes will pop out of your head. My favorite is the espresso bean cookie. Whoa is a power house of energy!! Expect expensive, just like Whole Foods. Walking out of there with a half bag of groceries for $55 really does make me feel bad about myself and what I just did. But hey, the wife has to have organic this and that so... Member benefits are pretty much a joke. The guys at the butcher don't seem to give a crap, and act like you're bothering them by interrupting their play time. Tip: don't buy anything there that is also sold at Safeway or WinCo to help save a lot of money. The good: Beer selection and good produce for the most part. read more

Grabbing lunch here has gotten more and more expensive. Sandwiches are a total rip-off at nearly $8 and a scant allowance of fillings. Wont bother with the deli anymore. The beer selection is one of the best in Humboldt County--a great selection of local microbrews and some English/Belgium imports. Great choice for doing grocery shopping in Arcata. This grocery store has pretty much everything you may be looking for on your shopping list. Fresh produce, veggies, fruits, canned goods, sweets, snacks, household & hygine products...and the list goes on. What I like about the Co-Op is that they seem to use more sustainable, organic and healthy options in their stores. Granted this is in Arcata, so that's kind of a given.
