I've been coming here for years. Food's always been good and they're fairly close. A bonus has been their BYO policy. A couple of years ago they started adding a minimal $5 corkage fee for wine. OK, fair enough. But tonight we brought a partial bottle and I expected it. But I wanted a beer, so I brought a single beer, too. That wound up adding another $2.50 for just the beer. That's excessive. I paid $3.25 for a Kiltlifter in Payson earlier today. Also, as others, have noticed smaller portions. Will be rethinking my choices on local Thai restaurants. read more

Fantastic little neighborhood Thai restaurant. We're all about the Pumpkin Curry, but Sala Thai has a lot more than one dish to offer. The atmosphere. It's intimate, with pretty much every square inch of wall space filled with kitschy artwork and memorabilia. The napkins. Neatly folded in birdlike form with a fork inserted. The presentation. Food is served in a manner consistent with a much more expensive restaurant. The menu. Pumpkin Curry! What more need be said? In all seriousness. I love the food. There is plenty of variety on the menu. Those in search of heat will find it. Those not can find safe refuge. Servers routinely ask for your heat preference on a scale of one to five, with five being hottest. Keep in mind it's an Asian scale. I'd suggest you go no higher than a three, my preference, even it you like your food spicy. Go higher at your own risk. They will ask you to pay in cash if possible. We paid with a credit card on our most recent visit, without problem or comment. It's just a small business understandably trying to avoid high credit card fees. Ordered two dishes to go plus egg rolls. Ordered ZERO spice. None. Bland. I had throat cancer and can't tolerate any heat. We got home and started to eat. The red curry beef was so spicy that it was totally inedible for me and barely tolerable for my wife who can easily handle spice. We called to inform them of this and after a long hold were told, "there's nothing we can do because it read no spice on our screen". They screwed up. Not us. We left a 15% tip for a to go order. I went with my family to Sala Thai this evening. We sat down and ordered very quickly starting with an appetizer of angel wings (stuffed chicken wings with clear noodles, onion, carrots, and ground chicken). We then ordered dishes for the seven of us: two orders of Pa-nang curry, Thai fried rice, drunken noodles with tofu, spicy eggplant with tofu, grilled salmon, and the special (basic leaves duck). The angel wings were a hit! The other dishes were for the most part very good. The eggplant was a little oily though the sauces were great. The drunken noodles were okay. As a hint to any Yelp readers, be very careful with the numbers (0-5) of how spicy you would like it. We all ordered numbers between 1 and 3, and it appeared that those of us who rounded up found our dishes a bit too spicy while those of us who rounded down found the dishes just right. Sala Thai also allows guests to bring their own bottles of beer or wine (though I do not believe they serve their own though I could be mistaken). While two of my family members go to Sala Thai on a regular basis, most of the rest of the family had never been there before. This was my second time and while the restaurant is good, it really didn't stick out as a unique Thai restaurant. It is definitely worth checking out (as I am sure it is a great restaurant for others). There is also plenty of parking available outside. read more

Wow! VERY VERY good! A very good friend recommend meeting here for lunch during a recent visit to Phoenix, and I'm SO happy that she did. Sala is the best Thai I've ever had. Sala is located in a very run-of-the-mill strip mall, and is a place you could easily overlook. Definitely look for it and indulge. My friend ordered a thai curry, and I ordered a hot seafood dish. Went in on a Sunday afternoon for the first time. I ordered the Drunken Noodles with chicken, and my friend ordered the Pad Thai. We both enjoyed our dishes. I wasn't crazy about the pad thai but loved the Drunken Noodles and would definitely order again. We both also got the coffee frozen drink. (They offer many different flavored "Mocktails" and it was very good). The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the service. It was friendly, but I had to ask for things a couple times before I got them. Not a big deal but the reason why I withheld a star. I would recommend the food and will be back. read more

Came over for dinner on a week day. One side note, didn't see a single Thai person: hispanics, caucasians. No greetings, after waiting 5 minutes, we had to seat ourselves. Overall, not friendly staff and super slow. 25 minutes for someone to come take our order, no drinks. We asked for our appetizers to come first...one came after our entrees and the other one never came...and yet we were charged for it. Our water glasses were never refilled even though our glasses were on the edge of the table. The food was good. We wanted deserts...and had to wait another 25 minutes to order. Yum! I just tried this place for the first time today and all I can say is delish! I like the decor, it's a nice clean atmosphere. They have really big booths that makes it comfortable to eat. Food is amazing! We ordered the phad se ew (my favorite Thai dish) so far its the best I've found in Phoenix since my mom's recipe. The basil fried rice was also good, rich flavors and the perfect level of spice! I think I found my new thai spot! I totally will be returning! Sad excuse for a Thai food restaurant. Everything we ordered was wrong or just weird. Teriyaki chicken? A piece of barely cut up chicken on a bed of rice, with teriyaki "sauce" on the side? It literally looked like soup. Thai fried rice? No egg at all, we also asked for them level 3 spicy, they were not even a little spicy. My 2 year old nephew was eating it with us so that should tell you about the lack of spice. Just insane. Took over 40 minutes for food to be ready. Like I get it's a Friday night, however, that's unacceptable especially when we were in person to pick up. ‍ ridiculous. Won't be returning. That is some pretty tasty thai food! I went here last night, service was pretty quick and food was good. I ordered the pumpkin curry, it was tasty. I asked for mild though and there was kind of no spice at all. Usually I play it safe at Thai places and order mild, but I wish this would've had a touch more kick to it. The vegetables, tofu, and pumpkin were just right though! Also I usually kind of plow through rice at thai places, but I had quite a bit left over here which was good. We had spring rolls and chili wings on Happy Hour prices (basically $1 off regular price. My wife had roast duck with vegetables and I had garlic snow peas with shrimp. This place was good before but have to give a bad review due to a negative experience. Got there, was busy my food was served after other people's that arrived before me. Anyway, I ordered garlic chicken and I was served a kind of sweet and sour chicken with hard to chew chicken. The sauce was so thick couldn't even mix with the rice. When told the first helper about the issue she didn't care and left. Called the second attendant to get some customer service but didn't get no sympathy from her either. I could not eat the dish at all. I then asked to talk to the owner and a young guy came upset to the table. He said that is the dish and he is a chef with 18-year of experience. I mentioned I did not like that dish since is sweet and with no garlic flavor at all. He said that how it is. It was a no sympathy from them, they didn't care the customer was not happy with the food and I still had to pay $15 for the dish I didn't eat. I used to rate this place a 5 when we first started using them several years ago. However they appear to have changed ownership and while the decor has been updated and looks much fresher and cleaner, and the menu is the same, the quality of the food and service has slid backwards. We used to eat there maybe 3-4 times a month now it's maybe 1 time every 6-8 weeks. I am used to certain dishes costing more, for example if I order shrimp or beef I accept that I will pay a higher price for them, BUT charging an up charge in a Thai restaurant to make the spice level 'Thai Hot' is LUDICROUS, especially since their regular '1-5' spice level choices are bland and weak in spice and sauces appear to have been watered down at times. It is an indicator that they don't know how to truly create the food they are cooking, or are simply cooking pre-purchased sauces and adding a small pre calculated of chili paste before serving (note to the restaurant - you can add as much chili paste as you want, it still doesn't replace or taste like fresh chili's or bring on the heat like fresh does and fresh are a lot cheaper too, so no need to charge the customers for your own inability to serve spicy Thai food in a Thai restaurant). The other thing this restaurant does consistently badly is to start bringing your entrees about 1 - 2 minutes after they serve your appetizers. We have even made sure they understand that x is an appetizer and y is the entree, but the kitchen seems to treat the whole order as a sprint to the finish line. There is a lack of management and care and it's sad to see an old favorite go down hill so far for things that if they cared or even observed their own performance could be addressed so easily; but it's being staffed by young kids and no one seems to care. read more
