While visiting Peoria, we decided to venture out and find some good food when I came across the Yelp for Pad That Cafe. As a proud Yelp Elite, I decided to give this place a chance because the reviews were the best I saw in the city! The place was busy on a Sunday night and it is small but I never say customers waiting too long. There were two larger parties seated so the food took some time but nothing outrageous. We started with the calamari, spring rolls, and crab wontons. The calamari were the biggest I've ever seen and very delicious! Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the spring rolls or crab wontons. I feel like those are hard to get wrong but I was not a fan of the cream cheese that was used and it was a lot of it, barely any imitation crab. For entrees, I had the spicy basil and substituted ground chicken for chicken breast, my personal preference. I ordered level 2 spice but it was still a bit spicy for me. Trying a new Thai place is always hit or miss with spice levels so I actually thought I was being safe with 2. Additionally, the chicken was so bland. Some Thai places season their chicken, some do not and unfortunately Pad Thai Cafe missed that mark. My partner ordered the short rib curry dish and my goodness, it smelled like heaven and tasted just as good. I don't eat beef but had to taste it and it was divine! He also ordered spice level 2 and his dish was not as spicy as mine. Great vibe and food! I was transported back to the alleys of Sukhumvit where savory plates were served with amazing Thai hospitality: Sawadee ka! The massaman curry with chicken was rich and en pointe. I loved the crunchy peanuts that added that texturrific satisfaction. The fragrance of the Jasmine rice... Wow! We were seated quickly, and picked our entrees quick... but it took 20 minutes for someone to take our order. It wasn't very busy so we weren't sure what happened. We ordered vegetable egg rolls, a pad Thai noodle, and a pepper steak. Our food came out super fast (under 10 min) which was nice. The food overall was a 3/5 for both of us, it was mediocre. The pad Thai didn't have many vegetables so it felt very monotone with the noodles. The pepper steak was decent and tasty. We ended up getting veggie eggs rolls and pad Thai. The veggie egg rolls were ok, a bit overfried but good overall. The sweet and sour sauce was on point. The pad Thai, which we used to gauge the baseline for the restaurant was VERY good. The pork was cooked to perfection and the over all flavor was great. Portion size is good too, able to be shared, which we did. The pricing was a bit high but I think worth it, ~15-17$ for the pad Thai w/protein. My only small issue with the pad Thai is the "spicy ness" of the overall dish. I like very spicy Thai food but I opted for a 4/5, so I could gauge where the floor/ceiling was. A 4 was basically the equivalent of a mild/ low medium anywhere else. I will have to try the 5 some other time, or ask them to not go easy on me. Overall, this was a pretty good lunch spot and I'd definitely be willing to come back again. First the good: pad Thai portion was BIG! Shareable for two folks who are hungry. Quality meat and really good flavor. Service was also friendly and fast. A little bit on the oily side, even for pad Thai. We also got an order of vegetable spring rolls and these were not as good. They were crispy, but there was too much oil for my liking. There were actually dollop drops of oil in the plate after I cracked into one. Also was not a fan of the vegetable medley they put inside. This is a popular Thai spot in the NW Phoenix area. I've been twice and both times it was considerably busy! Food is tasty and authentic with generous portions. Despite the portions, I believe the pricing is considerably high for AZ ($15-17 per dish without meat) and cornering you into paying an extra $2-4 any type of protein. Pricing is comparable/higher than what I was paying for Thai food in coastal CA. In contrast, their alcoholic drink pricing is such a great deal! Most cocktails are $10 and beers are $5. I am trying to find a group of friends to come in with to drink & yap with light apps. Note for management: I would consider adding two top tables and pushing them together to accommodate varying party sizes. Most tables have 2 people but seat 4-6. I ordered a Thai iced tea and it came in a mason jar with a handle. I used my own straw and the drink hit the spot. A good amount of ice so I finished it pretty quickly. For an appetizer, we got the chicken potstickers. These were small but good! As for entrees, I was craving their drunken noodles (pad kee mao), one of my favorite Thai dishes. I ordered it with tofu and a 4/5 spice level. It was great! Def spicy so I didn't eat much but I prefer that because I look forward to leftovers. I also tried the massaman curry with rice which was tasty as well as some the spicy basil dish, which had a really nice flavorful sauce to it. Overall, prices were a bit higher than anticipated but there was a sign that said they recently raised them, which makes sense in this economy. We have another winner. Pad Thai Cafe is a best of class in my 'Ethnic Eateries' category. Family run, authentic cuisine, neighborhood strip mall, cordial service, marginal ambiance, and an eclectic crowd of customers. Very eclectic. Totally industrial space, concrete floors, open black painted ceilings, with a whole wall Thai mural and a full bar at the back of the room. But, the real give-away is the crowd that ranges from work crews, to old retired people, to full body tat displays, to young executives, to the young Asian women in their scrubs from the medical service across the street. I knew from other Yelp posts that Pad Thai Cafe is a family operated place with highly praised authentic ethnic cuisine. It did not disappoint. Our server was extremely cordial, efficient, and helpful. We ordered fresh spring rolls and Pad Thai. One chicken and one mixed seafood. The rolls were perfection. Lots of veggies, shrimp, and savory fresh cilantro. I loved the peanut sauce. The Hoisin was spot-on as well, but give me the peanut any day. The Pad Thai was so good and real it couldn't speak a word of English. My wife played it safe and ordered her chicken version with no spice. It was mild, full flavored, and generous with the chicken. I'm a spice guy, but in an unfamiliar restaurant I played it safe, I thought, and ordered a 2-3 out of 5. It was Thai-Chili full flavor, high heat, awesome. I'm still smoking a bit. I might step down to a 1 next time, but maybe not. There are few tastes quite as great as real Thai Chili Heat!!! My mixed seafood was amazing. Although there were restaurants located much closer to my hotel, the existing reviews and pictures of this establishment looked more enticing. The waitresses are cheerful and welcoming, and the food is absolutely delicious. My cousin and I stopped in for lunch before a movie and I'm so glad we did. The pad Thai was our favorite entree. It had an amazing flavor and we kept going back for more bites. We also tried the spicy basil. We loved the sauce with the white rice, ground chicken and fried egg, but we didn't love the undercooked green beans which were kind of the dominating vegetable on the plate. You will not be disappointed! 2 Thai teas - 10/10 as expected. The lunch entrees do come with a veggie egg roll but it is not notated on the menu. The veggie egg roll was wonderful but I like the chicken egg roll way more. We really enjoyed our meal and are looking forward to the next visit. I sat at the bar by myself for efficiency and ordered the spicy green bean, also known as pad prik king, which is usually one of my favorite Thai dishes. Unfortunately, this version was almost inedible. It was full of grease and completely missing kaffir lime leaves, which are what give the dish its signature flavor and aroma. Without them, it was flat, heavy, and honestly repulsive. I even asked for kaffir lime, which is sad because that's a basic herb every Thai chef should know belongs in this dish. It felt like they were cutting corners, maybe assuming customers wouldn't notice. Some of us actually care about real Thai food. The owner, a white man, kept interrupting me while I was watching TV and waiting for my food. I tried to ignore him. He saw my hat that says "Make America Healthy Again" and said, "That would never happen," then went on a tangent about why I should move to Thailand. That was really disappointing. He didn't even realize that "Make America Healthy Again" isn't just a slogan it's a real campaign that's already achieving big things for our country. It's about improving health and nutrition nationwide, which you'd think someone who owns a restaurant would appreciate. Instead, he encouraged me to move out of the country. I never insinuated that I wanted to move, so his unsolicited advice struck me as unpatriotic. Honestly, I think he was projecting -- maybe he's the one who should move. Ironically, I noticed this business seems to be heavily supported by veterans in the area. Here are just a few things the campaign has already accomplished: 1. A national health commission was created to focus on preventing chronic disease instead of just treating it after the fact. 2. Several states, including Indiana, Iowa, Arkansas, and Utah, have started banning junk food and soda from being bought with EBT cards. 3. Food labels are becoming clearer, and artificial additives are being phased out of school and government food programs. 4. Nutrition education is being added back into schools, and the government is shifting support toward fruits, vegetables, and real food instead of processed junk. 5. Multiple federal agencies are finally working together to help Americans eat better and live longer. So yes, America is becoming healthier -- it's already happening! The food here was greasy, a key ingredient was missing, and the owner's comments were out of touch. Maybe if he spent less time discouraging young people and more time supporting what's actually good for America, both his restaurant and his attitude might improve. The ambiance was the only thing holding this place together. * Yes, this all did happen. I actually took these attached photos while I was sitting at the bar after that awkward conversation, waiting for my food. I posted them online that same day, and they're still visible in my Instagram archive with the date stamp. I also have my receipt. I'm simply sharing my experience which is exactly what reviews are for. The interaction happened, and it made me uncomfortable. I genuinely wanted to have a good experience here, especially since I'm in the neighborhood often. I was there on January 19, 2025.
