I ordered a French 75 and was extremely sweet.. after my first sip that's when I knew I messed up and I should have kept the Maribella champagne the crispy chicken sandwich with a Korean twist comes with either local greens or fries. I'm very familiar with chili crips as I fancy them on my loaded smoked Gouda grilled cheese/turkey sandwich... this for me was a miss. It tasted minty and I did my best to eat it. The panko bread crumbs also added a nice crunch French onion soup - maybe more topping than soup lol, lots of Gruyère cheese and bread/croutons in the soup. Very tasty, more loaded than most places! Raw oysters - came with a tasty vinegar sauce and cocktail sauce, also had hot sauce on the side. Oysters were very flavorful Gochujang pork belly - loved the sauce, also came with some chopped kimchi and radishes. Loved that it came with lettuce leaves to easily pick up and wrap them like lettuce wraps. My partner and I had a reservation for Saint & Second for the weekend and we were seated immediately during our outing. What I found out is that they have three separate menus, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. Staff were super accommodating and had some good recommendations. Parking can be tricky as there's a small lot behind Saint & Second but we parked in a nearby lot (parking meter) and walked over to the restaurant. 1. We ordered three dishes and the first one that caught our eye was the Huevos Rancheros, which had beans, onions, corn, tortilla wrap, avocado, and eggs. The mix of ingredients definitely had me taken aback but after the first bite, I was amazed with how flavorful it was. It melts super well even without the tortilla wrap but highly eating it with the wrap. Only downside to the dish is that it can easily fall apart, but still super tasty. Highly recommend. 2. Next is the Maine Lobster Roll, a nice dish thats just lobster meat in a toasted rectangle bread. It also comes with a side of fries which is a nice complimentary to the lobster roll. A bit messy to eat but rich in flavor. The toast is well made which is underrated in how it affects the lobster roll. 3. Lastly, my favorite was the Mac & Shrooms. A dish I would highly recommend to get as a shareable, the bread crumbs on top of the dish makes munching on it 10000x better. Super savory, rich, and crisp. My husband and I visited Saint & Second for brunch on a Saturday. We had a reservation for 11:30 am, but it was pretty quiet when we arrived, so reservations aren't strictly necessary. We started with a mimosa and an Everything Orange cocktail, which was delicious! You can really taste the fresh, house-made juices and syrups. For food, we had: Blueberry Pancakes: Our 1.5-year-old loved them, and they were a hit with us too. Fluffy, light, and perfectly loaded with fresh blueberries. Even my husband, who isn't big on pancakes, was impressed! Smoked Tri-Tip Hash: This dish was decent but didn't wow us. The broccolini felt a bit out of place, and the chipotle hollandaise was too sweet for our taste. Shakshouka: I was excited for this but a little disappointed. It wasn't as authentic as I hoped. Came here this past Sunday afternoon. We immediately received awesome customer service from this young guy with glasses and pinkish or purplish colored hair if I remember correctly lol. He was very joyful and full of positive energy just confirming we were in the right spot. We had the pleasure of sitting upstairs in the lounge area where the rooftop bar is. It was a beautiful day and the view was nice. The weather felt amazing. The restaurant is clean and appealing. The busser, waiter and bartender were all cool too. Great service. The calamari was delightful. Love the presentation and flavors coming from everything. It was different and unexpected. It wasn't overly seasoned or overcooked. Flavor and crunch was spot on. We came for brunch on a Sunday and there was a 2 hour wait for 7. Luckily, we were able to get a table upstairs that has the same menu. The brunch menu is solid and actually reasonably priced as their dinner can be on the pricier side. I ordered an Americano and others tried their michelada and Bloody Mary. My Americano tasted like the espresso was a little burnt but tasted better when I added some sugar. My friends liked their drinks! We are consistently looking for local restaurants that provide elevated food, solid drinks, and decent service. Saint & Second checked all three boxes and more! 6 guys on our team tonight, after a long day we walked up to Saint & Second with no reservation. The place was slammed, but without hesitation the hostess said "let me see what I can do". They found a spot for us in minutes. That was awesome, but honestly it was our server "C" that made the experience an A++! This place slams out incredible cocktails (several 10/10 old fashions) , apps are on point (the Parker Rolls insane!), we all ordered something different and each entree was everything you wanted it to be (probably some of the best fish and chips I've had in a good while). All that being said, the service is what makes this place worthy of the 5 star review. "C" was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and just had an overall personality that you wish more people in this world had. We started with the Parker house rolls, which I didn't get a picture of because it took a little bit of time, and we were starving, but the rolls we soft and melted in our mouths, so good! I ordered the Asian chopped salad and added salmon. The sale was so flavorful, and the salmon was cooked perfectly and the crispy skin added a great texture. The fish and chips. The fish looks deceiving in the picture because it was a large piece of fish, and again cooked perfectly, crispy exterior and soft and moist inside. The spicy tuna on crispy rice was great, we were just disappointed that it only comes with three, considering the price. The ribeye sandwich was good, but my husband said it lacked flavor, it needed a good sauce, possibly a horseradish aioli? Something. Everything on the dessert menu sounded good, so we ordered 3! Banana cream pie, this was so unique with the flaky puff pastry and banana cream was yummy and the salted caramel sauce was perfect. Pistachio butter cake, not too sweet, dense, and absolutely delicious. TLDR: The service and ambiance were great; food and cocktails good, but not exceptional by fine dining standards. Saint and Second does excel as a crowd pleaser: a safe and likable choice that's perfect when you don't intimately know all of your guest's culinary preferences. There is something for just about everyone. We had a lovely dinner with friends, which included: - Meze Plate ($14; baba ghanoush, muhammara,Turkish honey-sweetened labne, and roasted garlic flatbread) -- the baba ghanoush was pretty good, but the muhammara and labne were both quite sweet for our tastes. Our server very generously offered us more flatbread when our table burned through what had come with the plate. - Yellowfin Aguachile ($22; cucumber, watermelon radish, pickled shallots, finger lime, taro root chips) -- my favorite dish by far, made with good, fresh fish, though with less liquid than I expect in an aguachile (this was more like ceviche?), with an odd (to me) addition of something creamy. There wasn't enough of the creamy matter to be truly objectionable to someone who typically abhors cream with seafood. - Stonefruit and Burrata Salad ($17; watermelon radish, watercress, Marcona almonds, mint, sea salt, champagne vinaigrette) -- very attractively plated and a well conceived combination of flavors and textures -- but there was far too little fruit and vegetable matter compared to the portion of burrata for this to be fairly called a salad. It was more like burrata with garnishes. - Pan-Roasted Branzino ($40; fennel soubise, marinated baby tomatoes, shaved fennel salad, fines herbes) -- The vegetable accompaniments were the highlight for me with lovely, flavorful fennel soubise and fennel salad. The fish was fair, a wee bit fishy -- but I am admittedly spoiled by my favorite Greek restaurant, which serves fish that tastes like it just jumped out of the water. The bigger ding was that the fish was heavily oversalted even for my very pro-sodium palate, though it was nicely pan fried with crisp skin. - Roasted Mary's Chicken ($36; spring vegetable ratatouille, basil + English pea purée, caper chicken jus) -- The ratatouille was truly excellent, made with pan roasted veggies, Chez Panisse style. Jus was poured onto the plate table-side, which is a fun / gimmicky / classy touch. Pea puree was pleasantly, mildly sweet and everything played nicely with the moist chicken. A very good dish. - Corn Cavatelli ($32; housemade pasta, sweet corn, truffle pâté, roasted maitake mushrooms, black pepper ricotta; + crispy prosciutto add $6) -- the primary consumer enjoyed, but found it too cheesy for his personal tastes, like an "adult mac 'n' cheese," he described it. - Pan-Seared Salmon ($37; charred Bok choy, pink grapefruit, radish, coconut dashi, smoked trout roe, forbidden black rice) -- Coconut dashi is poured table-side. I didn't try this dish, either. The primary consumer said she enjoyed the charred bok choy, but also found her fish oversalted. - Children's Grilled Cheese -- Thick cut, buttery bread came nicely griddled with generous amounts of, I think, cheddar cheese melted inside. A side of fries was beautifully fried, not overly greasy. - Children's Cheeseburger -- The patty was thick, well done, and generously portioned. It came with more of those excellent fries. - Coconut Panna Cotta -- ($14; dragon fruit, mango, coconut chiffon, toasted almonds, passion fruit sorbet) -- a pretty and elegant dessert. - The yuzu mule ($17) we tried was tasty, but quite wimpy. I couldn't really detect any alcohol. If I were still in my intrepid youth playing a NYT food reviewer on Yelp, able to eat anywhere I like with just a single +1 to please, at any hour of the day we please, I'd give this place three stars. It would be forgettable for serious foodies eating their way through the LA Times best of CA list, for instance. But for those with a group, especially a group with children, this place is a real winner. I'm quite impressed with their brief, but high quality, generously portioned, and well priced children's menu. I do, however, wish there'd been an option to add a basic vegetable side as salads on the main menu were a bit too advanced for my barbarians -- though strangely, they didn't cry about the lack of vegetable matter. Next time, we're saving room for that strawberry shortcake bar (which I suspect is an Instagram darling) and more cocktails. Stopped in over the weekend. Overall, the experience was positive. We came in with reservations, so once we walked in to check in, the welcoming and friendly hostess sat us down less than 5 minutes. He was super friendly and engaging. We sat in the booth near the bar, the restaurant is beautiful, the ambiance is open and it just provides an overall good feeling. Our server: He was amazing, super friendly and checked in on us a few times. Loved his personality and not rushing us. Drinks: I usually order the same drink when I visit this restaurant regardless of the location. At this site, it's been a hit usually, unfortunately this time for what ever reason, the perfect martini was excessively sweet. Our server was kind enough to take it back and have it redone, unfortunately not much difference. I'm not sure if there was a new bartender, perhaps since I did not see the usual guy bartenders. Manager stopped by to bring the new drink, not necessary, but clearly they care. Drink was not great, but I let him know it was ok, just needed to enjoy my dinner date and great food, Either way, everything was wonderful, the dinners (Burger and Fish) were absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly. I hope they can get the drink down correctly, I think it's a matter of perhaps ratio being off with the vermouth. read more
