This was my first time trying Sage and I was absolutely blown away by the 9-course meal!! The service was excellent and personable, yet still the stand-offish vibe you would expect at a fine dining establishment. Daniel our server did an excellent job, as did the other staff we interacted with. Each course tasted great, but our tables' favorites were the bread with a green-colored butter spread. scallop, king mushrooms, and lemon truffle desserts. If I came back during this menu I would order more of these a la cart! But if I come another time I will absolutely go for another 9 courses as this was an amazing experience to try so many new and delicious food pairings. I love the fact that your tips go toward the students' dining/learning experiences. Also love that the chefs names are featured in their menu! Such a unique and heart warming dinner. We arrived a little after 7:30 and left just before 10. We weren't waiting very long on any of the food, but a 9-course dinner takes time! 100% worth the cost. What a wonderful venue, what a wonderful experience! Due to limited scheduling, it can be tough to get a reservation here. Only open for a portion of the school year and then only Monday through Friday for lunch and then again at dinner. Located in building 22, at the Metro Community College North campus, the newer building offers easy access and plenty of parking. The venue is modern yet cozy. We enjoyed a dinner offering a multiple course menu that is renewed every two weeks. The most special part of the menu is that while inspired by renowned chefs, the students themselves contribute to select items. We were pleasantly greeted and seated. There are very limited wine options however for only $10 corkage you can bring your favorites. Limited soft drink menu as well. The menu offered a wide range of selections to include vegan options. We enjoyed a wonderful nettle salad followed by the mushroom dish that was just a fabulous selection of morels and the student menu item of halibut, all were just top-notch. The pastry chef plied us with a nice selection of breads and accompaniments as well as interlude tastes that were magnificent. I cannot say enough about what a nice experience this was and for such reasonable prices. Lunch menu does differ from the expanded dinner selection and offers lower cost point options that includes a variety of salads and sandwiches that are creative. The students clearly work as a team and supported one another with their respective tables. Never heard of this place? Me neither! But now you have no excuses, I'm telling you now. This is the MCC student culinary program restaurant, and it affords an opportunity to taste top notch dishes affordably. First off, the inside is classy, but not over the top. You can tell you're on a college campus prior to walking in obviously, but the inside feels similar to that of a mid-top level restaurant. Servers are in ties/slacks, white tablecloth, table settings...etc. Most of the patrons were in business casual-type (button up, polo, etc). You have two options here (at least when I visited), they have a static menu that is the same menu for all summer (salmon, steak, etc), but they also had a student designed tasting menu when I visited. This was an entire 5 course tasting menu designed by a student for their final program assignment. I went with the 5 course option (prix fixe). The 5 course option was $40, with wine pairing for $15. Not bad...not bad at all. Mine was cuban themed so it included a starter drink, 2 small courses, a main course, then dessert. Did you know Metro Community College is ranked one of the best culinary schools in the country? Depending on the list, I've seen it ranked as #7 or #8! I love the concept of student-run fine dining at this restaurant. These students work hard to execute beautiful dishes, and their instructors run some of the nicest restaurants in town and source the best local ingredients. We've always had incredible service here. Some tips: - The best place to park is on the north side of the building where spots are marked with "Sage Student Bistro" signs. - Come for lunch for a casual experience. Sage Student Bistro accommodated our large group of 12 with calm and ease! If you have not tried this student bistro on the Metro Community College Fort Omaha Campus, now is the time. Reservations are suggested, although they appear to accommodate dropins if space allows. Lunch and dinner are served but make sure you check the web site, as the open dates and hours follow the campus schedule. The windows and fireplace were welcoming on a cool and sunny fall day. Lunch menu items are broken into "smalls" (appetizers) "bowls" (soups and salads) "plates" (entrees) and "sweets" (desserts). Guests can order individual items or a combination of three--a small, a bowl and a sweet or a small a plate and a sweet, etc. I ordered the frites, pastrami burger and a mouth watering lemon layered delight. Our orders were taken promptly, our food arrived in waves, and our desserts were shared and devoured. The aoli sauce on the pastrami took it up a notch and one of my dining companions said that the frites were the best she has ever had and she is a discriminating diner. The dinner menu is different than lunch and I forgot to ask about the menu--sorry! However, if it is anything like our lunch experience you will not be disappointed. I went on a Monday evening and was shocked by how busy it was - makes sense though as you get a 6 course meal for $30. In terms of the quantity of food, it was "ok" - I didn't leave starving but had I not had a few beers and a few pieces of the delicious rye bread with sage butter, I may have left more on the hungry side. In general the food was solid - I wish some of the things were warmer and there was a harder cook on the scallop, but all in all a good meal. Had it been double the price, I would have given 3 stars. The service as a whole was eh/ok and my rating factors in that this isn't a "professional restaurant" but a learning experience for the students - sometimes we didn't get new utensils, some people were out of water for a while, some drink orders didn't get placed, a slight issue with an overpoured beer, etc. read more

Our family loves this place. The menu changes often so I can't really recommend a certain dish. I will say they're accommodating to kids even though it's a great date night place. They also accommodate allergies. One time we went, though, we asked for sourdough bread 2x and each time they brought out gluten-free bread. I explained we weren't gluten-free just low-gluten/try to avoid and that sourdough fits our qualifications. The chef told our waiter he wouldn't give us that, though. It was very odd. I did speak to them and told them I was disappointed. The server understood and made note. He was one of the best servers and I know he will do great things in life. Some of the other servers in other visits weren't as friendly but I appreciate not everyone who serves WANTS to do that position and the students all must take turns at each role in the restaurant so that is to be expected. I think it's a steal of a deal although I recommend tipping more than the typical 20-25% so your cost could be closer to a nice restaurant in town but still cheaper than if you went to a place serving such delicacies. They also have a great beer and wine list for dinner-time. This is a must try place for a date-night, small group gathering, business lunch or dinner, or a day date with the family! Okay - so I have been waiting for Sage Student Bistro to reopen and get a good inexpensive tasty meal. Went on a weekday - renovations were ongoing to the normal dining area so they had moved the tables out to a temporary area behind the stairs. A bit confusing at first. Staff was friendly and I enjoyed reviewing the new lunch menu for the semester. My server was okay, but just a tad slow and did not seem accustomed to waiting tables - course it is a school and this is a learning experience for them. Went with the drunken noodles with shrimp. When the dish came out it looked great, but when I got into it, I found the noodles to be undercooked - a few were still somewhat hard. I am used to al dente pasta, but this was beyond that. The shrimp had also been over cooked and there was very little sauce to pull the dish together. Unfortunately a disappointing experience. I didn't even finish the meal. Left and I was still hungry. Honestly more of a 3 1/2 stars but since I cannot do half stars I'll round it up due to the fact it is student chefs learning! We had reservations here on opening day after their summer break which we weren't aware of until we arrived. Perhaps that explained the 2 hour dinner for 4 people? They were definitely not busy so I'm curious if service is always so slow. I liked the setup of the restaurant. Cozy atmosphere, white tablecloths and nice décor. I really enjoyed the amuse-bouche (single bites on spoons) they brought out prior to our dinner. It consisted of cucumber, goat cheese and herbs that worked great together. We ordered the charcuterie for an appetizer which came out with toasted bread, radishes, house cured meats, cheeses, black garlic aioli etc. Very different and unique. We all ordered something different ranging from Rabbit Ragout, Short Ribs and Salt Cured Salmon. My guess is the rabbit is what made our wait so long for dinner as that dish came out steaming hot and our 2 dishes of Short Rib were room temperature at best which ruined the dish a bit. Although the short rib was very tender it would have been more enjoyable if hot or even warm. Aside from that all dishes were enjoyed but unsure anything was over the top. It was also a nice touch that they brought out 4 mini sweet desserts, each enough for one bite after dinner. Only downside was each one was only enough for one person so everyone had to decide which one they wanted. We also ordered additional desserts to try that were different. The fruit crème brulee was enjoyed and we also ordered some type of s'mores dessert that was different. On the fence if that was enjoyable as the cubed marshmallow was not warm and a bit off putting. Overall I'm glad I was able to finally visit this restaurant. I saw other reviewers saying they enjoy sitting in front of the windows overlooking the kitchen to watch the chefs cook. I would have loved this but never saw these windows nor did my dining partners. Maybe because we were seated in a corner booth right by the entrance which was also odd considering we were the first customers to arrive on this night. read more

You are waited on and fed by students in the college's culinary program, so be forgiving if the waiter isn't the most professional. After all, you are getting a 6 or so course meal for about $30. For dinner, you get a variety of bread with Sage butter on the side and have a choice of al la carte or pre fixe dining. Always just go with the pre fixe. You can't beat the price, and it's a good experience. The execution of the food isn't always perfect, but it does always look great. The food is typically very satisfying and enough to fill you up. Went there for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and timeliness of the meal. Everything is student run and the prices are very reasonable. I had the Coq Au Vin recommended by the waiter and duck fat tots. The chicken was very soft and had a nice sauce served with it. The duck tots have a nice crunch and have larger pieces of potato than frozen tots while still crisp. The mashed potatoes were a little plain and the green beans with the chicken were too, but overall a really nice meal with great service. Would recommend checking it out if you see the menu changing regularly. Didn't get a dessert this time but I'll have to save room next visit. read more

Really cool idea of a place, run by students, somewhat affordable and a great atmosphere. Every couple weeks they have a new series in fixe prixe menus, including a 6 course meal. Definitely looking forward to checking this out next time! From the time you come in to the drinks/meals that come out you are greeted by up and coming student chefs or culinary students which in itself is a unique experience. The food is pretty decent, although I think they err on the side of the meat being slightly more raw than what I'm used to, so maybe ask them to cook it just a little more. I think the food could also use just a tad more seasoning, was a little flat. What a wonderful hidden gem! This restaurant is run by the culinary students at MCC, and they do a spectacular job. They have a seasonal menu with special fixe prix menus at the end of the school quarters that show case the students' projects. For the high quality of food at Sage, the prices are exceptionally reasonable. Perhaps the only downfall is that the restaurant is only open when school is, so as such, it is closed on the weekends. You can make reservations online, but I've also rarely had a problem just walking in. I suggest giving it a try! read more

After a miscommunication with a friend, I ended up having a very nice solo lunch at Sage. Quinoa Pilaf with plenty of vegetables and a nice accompaniment of pine nuts with toasted pita bread topped with a nicely executed filet of salmon. Located at the historic Metropolitan Community College Fort Omaha Campus, this student staffed restaurant offers high quality food for a very good price. The bistro is a program of the Culinary Institute at MCC and provide training for front of the house staff and student chefs in the kitchen. You not only enjoy a great meal, but are supporting the training and education of the future culinary movers and shakers of Omaha's restaurant scene. I went to lunch with a couple coworkers. The place was full, it only seats about 20-30 people, but the wait was not too bad. I ordered the Bistro Burger ($7) which came with fries, tots or a fruit salad (I got fries) and apple bread pudding ($2.50). The portions were generous. The hamburger was cooked well, if slightly under seasoned. The fries were really good. They were crispy on the outside and soft in the inside with just enough salt, at least until I got to the bottom, which was too salty. The bread pudding was awesome! It was topped with an apple syrup/sauce with chunks and whipped cream. It was paired with some blueberry and strawberry as well. The bread itself was spiced very well and had a nice crust. Really tasty! The staff did a great job. They were friendly and fairly prompt with their service. The restaurant itself is clean with a casual but mature feel to it. Everything seemed much nicer than the price you pay for the food. Summary: This is an under-the-radar eatery that deserves more attention and praise. read more

Sage is a hidden gem in Omaha. It's a restaurant that is staffed by students of the Culinary Institute at Metro Community College. Understand that the dishes, service, ALL of it, are being done by the culinary students. Yes, there may be some misses, but for the most part, my experiences at Sage have been great. The prix fixe dinners are a fantastic offering, and we'll often bring our own bottle of wine in to enjoy with our dinner. Be prepared to be asked to comment (in writing) about your experiences; these are used as feedback to help the students better their skills. The teaching chefs (I've met a few now) are first-rate and have really brought MCC's Culinary Institute forward. The MCC competition team has enjoyed a great deal of success not only regionally, but nationally as well. What a great place we have here! Dishes are meticulously thought-out and prepared, and are a visual and olfactory treat as well as delicious. Prices? Let me start by saying, if you have a special occasion - or have never experienced fine dining - Sage is the place to go. I have been here 3 times, which is an utter shame, as I would LOVE to eat here every week that they're open. The food is out-of-this-world, and the Metro Culinary Arts students do a bang-up job every single time. That really speaks to the program here, as the students doing the cooking are changing constantly! My most recent visit was with my wife, son, and parents for my 35th birthday dinner. We were privy to this year's Valentine's Day Prix Fixe menu, as the restaurant itself will not be open on Valentine's Day. Tangent time: Why aren't they open on Valentine's Day, 2015? Well, V-Day (maybe even VD-Day for some of you - sorry, couldn't resist) is occurring on a Saturday this year, and these are students cooking, as well as serving tables, to learn the ins-and-outs of the restaurant biz. It's a fantastic model, and they get the gosh-darned weekends off! Of course, in the REAL WORLD, they'll be losing the rest of their weekends for their foreseeable entire LIFE, so give 'em this much needed time to themselves! Maybe you aren't mad about it, but I had to act like you were just in case you were gonna get "tiffy!" Anyway, back to my review. The Prix Fixe menu (a changing prix fixe menu is available each week), was 6 courses (7 if you include dessert) and $40, which I thought was an absolute steal. The prices are low, when compared to other fine dining venues, as you rate the students at the end of the meal based on how your items were prepared, as well as the quality of service received. The typical prix fixe menu here is generally 5 courses and $30. Of course, you don't have to do the fixed price menu. You may order entrees and appetizers separately. The food was all prepared perfectly. If it was supposed to be medium rare, it was. The rubs were tasty, the flavors on everything were just phenomenal. Every time I have eaten here, I have been served something that I have never had at any other restaurant, anywhere, EVER. That's a pretty cool feat, as I've eaten out anywhere from Italy to Hawaii, to New York City. Bottom line, eat here soon and then eat here again. Great example of what student cooking can be about. Students take turns by the week preparing and creating meals served to the public. Depending on their school schedule some students are cooking while others are waiting tables. Our group opted to bring in wine and go for the pre fixe menu. We were served five various courses, ranging from a small soup to salads, pasta, steaks and desserts. Not all the dishes were the perfect compliment of flavor and balance, however, it was a terrific effort by the young chef. Service was also well executed based on personality, timing and explanation of menu items. Overall atmosphere was fun. My fiancé, her Mom and I went for a nice experimental dinner with some very attentive waiting staff. They paid a lot more attention than most. Had lunch at the Sage Bistro & was quite pleased by the experience. The venue is very nicely done & the staff very pleasant! I had the Reuben sandwich which was one of the only 3 offerings. I was thinking of the gourmet chicken but wasn't quite that hungry as I was advised it was a rather large portion & only $7.00. Anyway, being from the east where a Reuben sandwich done at a nice Jewish or Arab deli is usually big enough for 3 meals, I was a bit surprised by the size of the Sage offering, [see video]. Not only that but a Reuben on pseudo rye bread just doesn't cut it even here because there is a grand Lithuanian bakery in Omaha that does authentic sourdough Eastern European rye bread that's just great! Another thing is, the sandwich came w frozen fries done in some sort of Sysco Systems, [Sage Benefactor] MaxFry which as I write this review 6 hours later, is causing some serious acid stomach problems & a small dish of, get this, Sweet Pickles! Note; a Reuben Sandwich is NEVER EVER served w Sweet pickle!!!! Actually great Reuben spots in Chicago, NYC & even Cleveland have jumbo jars of whole gigantic Dill Pickles right on the table so one can eat all one wants & they don't count how many are missing from the jar & charge extra for them. As a business traveler who eats all over the country 3 to 4 times a week I have found a gem in Omaha. My first experience was for dinner where we both had the prix fixe menu. What a steal for $30/pp. This was a 5 course seafood delight tonight that started with a crab cake bite size starter. The mussels were perfectly cooked and the broth was delicious with the 3 types of bread served and the sage compound butter was delicious. The next course of clams was a favorite and again the bread soaked in the creamy sauce was delicious. Our main course of halibut a fish I usually find to be dry but not tonight. The fish was perfect along with the vegetables and the blurred blanc sauce was so tasty I wanted to just eat the rest.. Dessert was included in the set price with 4 choices. My dining partner had the chocolate financier and I had the mint pavlova with grapefruit curd and grapefruit sorbet. Both were delicious. Please come out an support this well run student learning environment atmosphere at dinner is elegant nice background music and service was fantastic. Since this is a student-run restaurant and my son is one of the students, I expected errors and issues and was prepared to share these with my son so he would know what needed to be improved upon. I couldn't have been more wrong in my expectations. The service was flawless, and the food was equivalent to fine dining. I had the pesto salmon with rice pilaf and zucchini and cherry tomatoes. Certainly nothing needed to be improved. Except the tables. The legs on mine were uneven, and it was distracting to have the table wobbling all the time. As you're headed north on Hwy 75, take the 3oth street exit, then turn left onto Sorenson Pkwy. Take the first right turn into the campus, and the Culinary Arts building is immediately on your right. The Bistro is on the right on the ground floor. No signage outside to let you know this. I missed the turn onto Sorenson and had to take a later entrance onto the campus. If you do this, you'll get the scenic view of this historic former army fort with very little directional signage to get you to the right building. read more

The restaurant menu changes often, with the sessions of Metro Community College, so you should call ahead to see if they are open. I am always impressed with the wide variety of dishes they have. Update: we went on summer quarter again with out of town guests and had a very different experience. Service was sloppy, food was cold and I had to send it back and it was just not up to par. They noticed my displeasement because they took off one of the main dishes off the bill. I was a little disappointed a place I had raved about for almost a year performed so poorly this time around. Food was okay, we had duck, scallops, salmon, beef and chicken. But the desserts did not look super appetizing either. We might give it a third shot in the future but for now I would recommend, stick to Prix Fix Dinner Week. Old review: What a great experience! This place is a must see and taste in Omaha! It is a little hard to get to if you are not familiar with MCC but once you make it to the building you see the students from Institute for culinary arts inside the kitchen working on all the plates through glass windows. The restaurant is right next to it. I should advise you that it takes about two hours in total for dinner if you decide On The Prix Fix meal. The menu changes every week. They also have a non-changing menu. We had a lobster taster to begin and our second place plate was a trio of Pieroges that were delicious. Just when I thought nothing could get better they brought out a salmon that was to die for, it had carrots and a very nice sauce! Then I thought nothing could get better and they brought out a beef dish that was perfectly cooked. The prix fix menu includes a dessert and I had a chocolate cake that was wonderful as well. I was so skeptical about going to this restaurant since I am not a foodie. However, I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED! The food was so delicious, and beautifully presented.From the Amuse Bouche through the dessert, and the tiny sweets served at the very end. All five of us had a great dining experience there.
