Had a really good waxing experience here when my regular couldn't take my last minute appointment. Tanya, I believe (i hope) is her name, and she was very good and made me very comfortable as well, along with making the entire process as painless as possible. She didn't talk much compared to my regular, but worked just as fast and efficiently and gave advice whenever I wanted it. The space was very neat and clean. My only gripe is is that she does everything from manicures to eyebrows to waxing and if it's a busy day, you may have to wait a little bit in which case, having an appointment time doesn't make sense. And, I paid $10 more than I usually do for the waxing services, but considering this is on newbury, it definitely was not a bad deal. Overall, a great second option for me now and I would definitely go there again should I not find time with my previous waxer! read more

I guess my experience was just average. I bought a coupon off buywithme for this place, after seeing the ratings. My haircut came out nice. There aren't really any complaints on that. I only say it was an ok place, because they certainly did make you feel uncomfortable when you can't afford to have your always taken care of by a professional (I box dyed mine and they could tell). The only person I've ever had my hair cut by here is Judy, and she's on the top floor. This is a separate section of the salon run by Wendy, and it may even actually be a separate business, but Safar makes the appointments. It's only Judy and Wendy up on the top floor cutting hair and they are fun. They do an excellent job and although it's actually been a while since I've had my hair cut period, when I last went, the price was reasonable for Newbury Street ($40). It's fun to make a joint appointment with a friend or two if you can. If you get on Judy's good side by bringing her wine, she may open it while you're there and you can all enjoy a glass. read more

I love this place. Gude is my absolute favorite hair stylist of all time. The moment I met him I felt comfortable. I have never been disappointed with his cuts. He also styled my hair for my wedding and was so calming and wonderful. Five stars for Horatio for cut and color. When my long-time stylist moved to San Francisco, I looked at reviews on Yelp, Allure, Harper's Bazaar, etc. and found Horatio through online comments and recommendations. That was over ten years ago. I tried six or seven salons/stylists before finding him and have never looked back. Working with him over the years, he has dramatically improved the color, overall health and texture of my hair- as close to natural (minus those pesky gray hairs) as humanly possible after a few experiences at other salons that left my hair dry, thin and over-processed (and also too dark for my skin tone.). I started coming to Safar to get my haircut with Horacio when I was a student. I moved to New York City 4 years ago but still make the trip annually to get my haircut religiously with Horacio. He's the only person I trust to cut my difficult curly hair. Every time I see him he works wonders and is the only hairdresser that can tame my curls and make every haircut work for me. Not only is he an amazing hairstylist, he's also an amazing person and is always in a good mood, making all his clients happy and ensuring that I love the haircut. If only I could give zero stars! I came in to Safar for a manicure/pedicure. With an important event two days later, I thought I would try out what was supposed to be a fab Newbury salon. What I got was literally THE WORST mani/pedi I have ever had in my life. I left BLEEDING from both hands and feet and find it hard to believe the butcher who worked on me is even licensed. For those who know the usual routine, you will understand the omissions - no cuticle oil and cuticles on my hands cut to bleeding. I had one nail that had broken just in the top of the nail bed and it was filed like she was sawing for her life. I yanked my hand away, or it would have been bleeding too. NO lotion on the hands and arms. AFTER my nails were painted it's like she remembered the lotion and put it on in two strokes on each forearm and that was it. Needless to say my hands and cuticles were not in good shape after this mani. For the pedi she did not even ask if I wanted the nails cut for filed. Without a word she just set in on clipping my toe nails, immediately cutting the big toe nail deep into the nail bed, blood everywhere (it literally hurt for four days!) The lotion "massage" consisted of precisely four strokes on each leg to get the drop of lotion rubbed in. Even the conversation was terrible. Right from the beginning I talked about how I had a very important special event two days later and was hoping the polish would look nice with my dress. Not five minutes later she asks me if I had anything going on that weekend. Me: Um, yes, my formal event in two days. Her: Oh, right... So I went to the event with huge scabs on my fingers and toes. Lovely. Needless to say I will NEVER go back and would advise anyone who wants to keep their fingers and toes intact to stay far, far away. read more

i cheated on my hairdresser of four years at safar. as i sit in the hairdresser's seat, i start to think that there are two professions one should not speak ill about: one is your dentist, and the other is your hairdresser. and especially when omid, the hairdresser, asked about who gave me the reference and i replied with yelp.com, i'd better write something nice here. the people were super friendly when i walked in. i figured it was a good sign when omid rushed up to me after i changed into the garb that they give you, explained that he would be running about 20 minutes late because his current client was late arriving, then asked me if he had done my hair before. i responded, no, you have not, then he asked me if i was sure. i know all asians look alike, and i could have been offended by that, but i was more relieved since he would know what to do with my hair and my face shape. i waited patiently on the bench relaxing while reading a magazine. one of the guys offered me a cappuccino while i waited. what i appreciated here was that omid took the time to talk to me about my hair casually sitting on the bench as a more informal setting, about what i liked and didn't like, and to decide on what the haircut should look like. i agree with everyone else -- the hair wash was not as luxurious or relaxing as it could have been, but omid himself washed my hair. besides, i was more interested in the end result, which i love. he even asked me if i liked it, which is more than i can say for most hairdressers! his price is very reasonable for a haircut too, especially when he styles hair for runways and shoots. i will definitely go back to omid again, since i am such a loyalist! read more

I have absolutely no complaints about Safar. I thought of how to justify anything besides 5 stars and I can't. I saw Tyzza and she gave me one of the most precise and well thought out haircuts I've ever had. Sure, it lasted over an hour, and maybe some people wouldn't be into that but to me it was just a sign that she was really concentrating and working hard. For the work she did, extremely affordable. I've been shopping around for a good hair salon ever since I moved here 5yrs ago. Very rarely could I find one that matched up to the level of service and expertise I got in NY, until I started coming to Safar. I've gone back now 5 or 6 times, and I am always completely wowed by the talent of the hairstylists and colorists. My fav would be Saul, but honestly, they're ALL pretty dam good. Saul listened carefully to my hair issues/desires, discussed the possibilities, and went to work. For a guy who trains in NYC with Toni and Guy, he's pretty much as good as it gets here in beantown. The results were beautiful. Even with a crazy schedule, he answered my hair questions thoroughly and spent the extra time to shape my cut. The color was fabulous as well and for the first time in years, I actually relaxed in my chair, knowing that I was in expert hands. Seriously, I've paid triple the amount in NYC for the quality of cut/color I'm getting here. Not that they need a good review for their already hoppin business, but I love 'em, and tell them every time I leave. My only warning is to stay away during Saturday. It's crowded and chaotic. Any other day is much calmer and makes the experience all the more comfortable. read more

Enia did an amazing job cutting my curly hair. She was lovely and she really gave me a cut that's easy but also really fun. I told her I didn't want a round looking cut and she delivered something very cute. I can't say the atmosphere of the salon is particularly pleasant. It's quite noisy and my college student self didn't quite feel fancy enough to be in the salon. My sneakers were joined by many a designer boot. Also, there's not really a legitimate changing room. There's just a closet to change in and leave your clothes. You can't hear anything over the din of blow dryers so knocking doesn't really prevent anyone from walking in on you or you walking in on someone else. read more

He listened to what i wanted and gave me his opinion he was a total professional and happily answered my questions regarding my hair. He was not pushy about selling me products. I am traumatized by several hair cutting experiences as a child (before anyone seemed to know what to do with curly hair). I have long dark curly hair that I love, but struggle with. Sometimes it goes into tighter curls, but give it a little moisture or touching it too much when it's wet and I am a big head of frizz. I used to go to Ouidad in New York which I LOVE, but I couldn't get to NYC and really needed a haircut, so I braved a new stylist. I found Horacio, who is amazing. He blew my hair out at the end, which I haven't done since the 9th grade, so that was hysterical, but very glam. The hair cut with the layers and the style is just perfect. Unlike other stylists I've been to, he didn't have a look of panic when he saw my hair for the first time. He understands how curly hair moves and shapes it accordingly. My stylist Stephanie was so sweet, understanding and immediately put me at ease. She knew EXACTLY what look I was trying to go for. A couple hours later I had the perfect icy blonde hair color. I bought a gift certificate through Gilt City because I've always wanted to try this place and it was such a good deal. I called on a Tuesday to come in the next day and they were able to accommodate me immediately. I just wanted to try partial highlights and came with some photos to support my vision. My stylist was Jessica and she was super nice in explaining what she saw in the photos to make sure we were aligned. I didn't want it to go too blonde and I only really wanted it to frame my face. I think she did a great job of making it look super natural! I was very pleased with my first experience here and would totally come back to try a cut or other services. I do not go there often, only for special occasion when somebody must deal with my rebellious curly hair. They always make me happy. Lets start with the basics- ambiance and decor, both of which Safar thoroughly satisfies. The modern simple style of the salon adds a hint of sophisitcation without being pretentious and the music is not at all intrusively loud. The espresso bar also adds a chic touch which was nice. I had my hair cut by Omid, who I have loyally followed all the way from the Northshore where I was lucky enough to find him while he was moonlighting at a local salon. He has an excellent aesthetic and his color is fantastic- rich, even, but complex tones which really compliment my skin tone, something which he certainly takes into consideration when doing color. He is very concerned with and receptive to the vision which I bring to the table and is generally very good with following through on what I want. This group is as good as it gets:) From the moment you walk in its pure entertainment from all the different personalities of the salon. Lia was the stylist that cut my hair and not only did she do a fabulous job, but I felt like a million dollars when I walked out! She was so spunky and fun, I adored her!! I have never yelped before but after my experience at Safar today, I had to yelp. Wow. I have hated my hair for years - it is very wavy and thick and I have tons of it. I never could style it in any way that suited my natural hair twists/turns and my round face. And so for years I have pulled it back in a ponytail and had some part of it pulled up. But I read on Yelp about Horacio and decided to give him a try. I will admit I had gone there once before and got a decent haircut and a good color. But Horacio made me love my hair again - I have a gorgeous color and a fabulous haircut. And best of all I can wear my hair down!!!! I love him - he has a great personality, is easy to talk to, and boy, does he know the science of thick curly hair. He taught me how to work with my hair's natural tendencies and explained why what I was doing wasn't working. Overall: 5 stars. Horacio was awesome, salon was good, but the 5 stars are for Horacio.
